The Sherman and T-34 were both essentially the same tank from a war economics standpoint.
Cheap to make indexed to capability and in extremes nigh disposable. The Sherman was beloved by the soviet crews who got them because they had fewer transmission issues than the T-34 and had much better gun control. America used to understand war economics. The Sherman had a narrower track, which made it teh suck for off-road warfare half the time, but much better than the German and Russian tanks when you had a road network available and opportunities for rapid mobility. The lighter armor helped with that too (even if that made it a bit more vulnerable to enemy artillery and tanks).
All that said, if a German 88 was opening on my position, I'd definitely want to be inside a T-34. Posted by: Dr. T at April 30, 2021 09:14 PM (pxDdN) 40

The Long March 5B core stage's orbital inclination of 41.5 degrees means the rocket body passes a little farther north than New York, Madrid and Beijing and as far south as southern Chile and Wellington, New Zealand, and could make its reentry at any point within this area.
The most likely event will see any debris surviving the intense heat of reentry falling into the oceans or uninhabited areas, but the risk remains of damage to people or property. https://spacenews.com/ huge-rocket-looks-set-for-uncontrolled -reentry-following-chinese -space-station-launch/ Posted by: Montgomery Scott Blowing Beautiful Android Little Minds ... at April 30, 2021 09:50 PM (okV1R) Posted by: ChiCom Fuckups at April 30, 2021 09:51 PM (1Yy3c) 106

Yep, regulatory capture. If it costs $100 million to comply with the government paperwork to start a new cell phone provider, no one without $100 million to waste is going to go into the business. It's pocket change for AT&T, but for some guy who might want to set up a few cell towers in his small town, it's a deal-breaker. More of it is recovery and repair rates vs abandoned and total loss casualties. In other words, how long does a tank last until written off? Reading the reports and figures on readiness rates for each side during different operations is interesting. Some Panzer Divisions had more operational tanks at the end of some Kursk engagements than at the beginning. Most had a pretty much steady state during the whole operation. Most write-offs happened when a side lost control of the battlefield. Recovery of broken vehicles (friendly and enemy) often happened during the fight. That was the real reason behind the constant German search for the super weapon. Sheer lack of numbers and production capability. You can see a parallel in the Cold War where the West tried to build higher tech stuff while the USSR went for numbers as being a dictatorship they could short the private sector for the military sector. And the Nazi dream of world conquest was always kind of silly as there were never going to be enough Germans to control the world. Certainly not by their dream of force. You could see a parallel like that today if you thought about it.

She had walked out of Walmat with stuff she hadn't paid for. They get the stuff back and let her go, and these two cops come and arrest her. Any fool could've seen that woman wasn't right in the head. She also had sensory aphasia, which meant she didn't process hearing too well. Yes, but only needing one type of fuel for tanks, trucks, and jeeps, made logistics WAYYYY easier.
Posted by: Romeo13 I think at the time, the US did not have the production of diesel engines that would have made a WWII era tank desirable. We did make a lot of gasoline engines, which made building M3's, M4's, M5's and M7's (and later M10's and M18's) and M24's mass produced. If the war had gone on longer, we would have seen a lot more of M-26 Pershings, which would have been more than a match for Mark V "Panthers" and would have been gunned up enough for Tiger 1's. The diesel that powered T-34's broke down a lot. It was not unknown for them to go into battle with "spare" engine strapped to the back of the tank. Neither the Panther nor the Tiger existed, even in concept, before the Germans ran smack into the T-34 and freaked the fuck out. Germany's main tanks were the Mk 3s and 4s. What mattered was the gun size, with some idiot deciding that the 4 should have a short barrel (rather than the medium-long barrel Gitler actually wanted (and knew what he was talking about for a change).

The problems with the M113 weren't about its fuel, but that it was constructed of inflammable aluminium!
Posted by: Zettai at May 01, 2021 12:06 AM (2INXM) --- aluminum/magnesium alloy, and the original variant was gas powered. they went to diesel in the A1, but there were several problems with that: 1. the fuel was used to cool the injectors, so it got warmer, thus more flammable. 2. MOGAS and DF-2 routinely got cross contaminated, lowering the flash point (ask me how i know). 3 the hull was still aluminum/magnesium, with ammo, explosives, etc, inside. and the fuel tank was INSIDE until the A3 version. garrett, Cindy Bullens is the up-and-coming rocker whose career was launched when a few of her songs got included on the Grease soundtrack, and which IMHO are some of the best tracks on there.
Then her kid (not sure if son or daughter) got sick, she had to give away her career to take care of them, they died anyway, and she basically went crazy. She's now "Cidny" Bullens. Sigh. Posted by: qdpsteve at May 01, 2021 12:44 AM (L2ZTs) 314

Posted by: SFGoth The Mk 3 and early Mk4's were equipped with the low velocity 50 mm gun. I have a book by a German panzer general who remarked "This went a long way toward losing the war for Germany" Later, the Mk4 "specials" were equipped with the much superior 76 mm high velocity gun, and heavier front armor mantle (the same gun as the Mk 5 "Panther"), but it did make the tank (Mk4) unbalanced (bow heavy) and slower. Clearly, Germany had the capacity to build Panthers and Tigers from June, 1940 - June, 1941, just not the concept. If it had done so with any kind of industrial alacrity (which Speer demonstrated Germany was quite capable of), Barbarossa probably would've turned out differently.
Another thing I wonder about is what effect not embarking on the ill-fated London Blitz and Battle of Britain would've had on Barbarossa. I don't have the #s, but Germany lost a staggering amount of aircraft and experienced pilots. Posted by: SFGoth I think Hitler expected Britain to knuckle under to the "terror" of bombing, etc. It was actually a pretty near run thing. If the Luftwaffe would have continued to concentrate on hitting RAF airfields and hitting radar stations, it all might have turned out differently. And really, the German generals at the front of Barbarrossa were too timid. The Russians had nearly been run out of armor by October- November 1941, and if they (Wehrmacht) had actually driven an armored thrust directly at Moscow, the Soviets might have collapsed. Stalin was making plans to flee Moscow, and taking Moscow would have cut rail traffic in the USSR in half Posted by: Bozo Conservative ...meticulous weirdo at May 01, 2021 12:51 AM (tjZg/) 326
