That's part of the story. More of it is recovery and repair rates vs abandoned and total loss casualties. In other words, how long does a tank last until written off?
Reading the reports and figures on readiness rates for each side during different operations is interesting. Some Panzer Divisions had more operational tanks at the end of some Kursk engagements than at the beginning. Most had a pretty much steady state during the whole operation.
Most write-offs happened when a side lost control of the battlefield. Recovery of broken vehicles (friendly and enemy) often happened during the fight.

I don't know if any of you have been following that story about two Loveland, CO cops who dislocated the shoulder and broke the arm of some frail 70-something woman with dementia. She had walked out of Walmat with stuff she hadn't paid for.
They get the stuff back and let her go, and these two cops come and arrest her. Any fool could've seen that woman wasn't right in the head. She also had sensory aphasia, which meant she didn't process hearing too well.
Turns out the two cops, male and female, were lovers and shacked up.
Those two and a third cop have resigned now.

I think at the time, the US did not have the production of diesel engines that would have made a WWII era tank desirable. We did make a lot of gasoline engines, which made building M3's, M4's, M5's and M7's (and later M10's and M18's) and M24's mass produced. If the war had gone on longer, we would have seen a lot more of M-26 Pershings, which would have been more than a match for Mark V "Panthers" and would have been gunned up enough for Tiger 1's.
The diesel that powered T-34's broke down a lot. It was not unknown for them to go into battle with "spare" engine strapped to the back of the tank.

Just looked him up on Wiki. He didn't do too poorly for himself. He later became a writer and producer for Celine Dion, among others. He also apparently had at least a tiny bit of testosterone as Wiki says he contributed a song to the First Blood soundtrack.

aluminum/magnesium alloy, and the original variant was gas powered. they went to diesel in the A1, but there were several problems with that: 1. the fuel was used to cool the injectors, so it got warmer, thus more flammable. 2. MOGAS and DF-2 routinely got cross contaminated, lowering the flash point (ask me how i know). 3 the hull was still aluminum/magnesium, with ammo, explosives, etc, inside. and the fuel tank was INSIDE until the A3 version.

The Mk 3 and early Mk4's were equipped with the low velocity 50 mm gun. I have a book by a German panzer general who remarked "This went a long way toward losing the war for Germany"
Later, the Mk4 "specials" were equipped with the much superior 76 mm high velocity gun, and heavier front armor mantle (the same gun as the Mk 5 "Panther"), but it did make the tank (Mk4) unbalanced (bow heavy) and slower.

Another thing I wonder about is what effect not embarking on the ill-fated London Blitz and Battle of Britain would've had on Barbarossa. I don't have the #s, but Germany lost a staggering amount of aircraft and experienced pilots.
