Sam's been on the Pet Thread before, shortly after we got her last July. The Teddy Bear floor pillow was a gift to my son many years ago from a friend who gave them to a couple of her friends' kids. One of the other kids mentioned to me that she had turned hers into a dog bed, which struck me as a great idea. We dug ours out of the basement (my son had outgrown it years ago) and gave it to Sam and she embraced it immediately. - Frank

It certainly appears that Sam has a tough life, on the receiving ends of "hand me downs". The Horde isn't quite sure how you can look yourself in the mirror. That said, thank you for sharing.

I was so sad to see no entries for the Ace of Spades Pet Thread this week as it is always the high point of the week. I LOVE Ace of Spades (it never disappoints even as many other websites eventually do) and especially the pet thread! Thank you ALL for all you do. Attached is a picture of my dear boy Marley, a Yorkshire terrier. He just turned an amazing 17 years old (119 in people years) and has all but given up his favorite activities of swimming, playing ball by himself (he would throw the ball in the pool, run around, jump in and swim and retrieve it) and barking at any squirrel who had the audacity to visit his yard. He is an amazing boy and an inspiration because even at this age, he keeps going! Mostly lurker but sometimes poster -OzzieIsMyDog.

Well, I'll be honest with you I had my doubts about the Pet Thread. I'm happy that you came out to share the remarkable story of Marley. A dog that makes it that far is quite the trooper. You certainly have done a fine job with him.

Greetings. "Frasier Crane" here. Pictured are my good whippet friends Jake and Emily. They have 2 speeds: fast and chill. Luckily, that breaks about 10 - 90. Best companions ever. Emily likes to watch, and I think can comprehend, Ace's funny animal videos. Jake either can't or is indifferent.

Fast? Like power runs in the house? You must have caught them in a chill moment for these wonderful snap shots. They certainly have the appearance of being wonderful companions, even if one is a couch hog. Thanks for your contribution today.

Dear Pet Morons:

I am a long-time lurker and fan of pet morons.

Please find below a picture of my rescue pony, Trixie. She was a children’s pony who was injured and can’t work anymore. I purchased for for $1 and adopted her. She is super sweet! And she loves me to talk to her in Latin or to tell her about articles on Ace or to simply give her a carrot. - Charles

Latin? So you're one of those kind of PetMoron owners? Just kidding. What a big heart to take on a rescue horse. I bet your pet out eats all of the pets featured today. Thanks for being a lurker and sharing with us.

Seamus 2 (1).jpg

Had to put my Seamus to sleep on Tuesday the 20th. The cancer just took off and the shots weren't helping. He was such a great cat; even people who weren't crazy about cats liked Seamus. For his part, he couldn't entertain the possibility that anyone wouldn't love him. Miss you Seamus. -Bean Counteress of Rohan

Awww so sorry to hear about Seamus' passing. He certainly was a handsome guy. He had that look about him he was a people pleaser. Thanks for sharing at this sad time.

This is Archie, the mighty Westie. He is 9 years old and about the calmest dog in the neighborhood. He loves all the children (especially the girls). He is also a great traveling dog, happy to be in the car and in hotels. He likes broccoli and carrots, but no fruit. Not sure why - my other dogs always ate apples & bananas. Thanks for the pet stories each week - they are always special. Our street has lots of great dogs - an Airedale, two Great Danes, a Boxer, a Newfoundland, a Whippet, and a Bernese. Archie is the small one, but he loves his big buddies. Thanks. - Jim from Charlotte

So is Archie that spiffy white when he runs with the big dogs? He certainly is a looker. And your photo is awesome, captures his spirit. Thanks for telling us about him today.

Last week I mentioned the In-box was sparse. You folks have come through big time. There was an incredible amount of pet photos and stories submitted. Please be patient all of the pets will be featured.

The good Lord willing and the creeks don't rise, we will be back here next Saturday. Have a great week!

13 The other night I saw Ace post something about a greyhound who was adopted and was somewhat at a loss for living in the real, non-track, world. It took my greyhound at least 6 months to adjust to sliding glass doors (tried to walk through them), TV (scared her to death), stairs (had never encountered them and had no clue), ponds (walked right in because she didn't know what that type of water was. And could not swim). And so on.

If you are raised in a cement block building, have no owner, and have never done anything but chase a fake bunny, then real life can be a challenge. It helps if you have another dog in the house that they can copy. For instance, my Emma had no idea what a dog toy was, or that she should pick it up with her mouth. She studied my Golden, and after a few weeks she was tearing the stuffing out of Elmo.

21 So sorry to hear about Seamus

I had Fanny spayed on Thursday. I mentioned here last week that I was worried about it. It went well. I made her stay in the big crate when I got her home and she was not happy. I let her out the next day and am confining her to the bedroom. This hasn't stopped her from climbing up on everything. They cleaned up some problem teeth and told me she is actually missing a few teeth. The bad ones most have been bothering her. I'll have to figure out how to clean them.

And she's been microchipped so all my animals are chipped and registered now.

Peanut is doing well recovering from being bitten by a water moccasin. Her Majesty and I changed his dressing last night, cleaned the affected area and rebandaged. The wound area, which is huge, was healing over very nicely; the vet doesn't think surgery is necessary to close it up.

Peanut is a quiet, placid boy and stood like a rock during what must have been very uncomfortable for him. Lots of loving on him afterwards. Never a show dog, always a sweet friend.

26 RIP, Seamus. Goodness, that's one of the most handsome cats I've ever seen.

The British Royal Lion Statues would envy the calm dignity in that lovey face.

Here at Casa New Dawn, we've just done the prescription grade "Advantage", monthly neck-drops. Bonnie Wee Lass takes hers with nary a flinch, but Big Brother Maine Coon Scamp, reacts with much flinchy & zoomy drama, for two or three minutes. And then settles back down to his normal state of Zen.

At least neither demonstrate the decorative impatience as the pair in the opening photo. That reminds me of the F this! F that! F the other thing! cat .gif meme. Heh!

I'm glad Fanny's surgery went well. It's almost impossible to adequately clean a pet's teeth to the point of good dental health. It would require a twice daily cleaning of all surfaces every day over time. You can try, and you can provide chew toys. But what really works is having your pet's teeth cleaned at the vet every 1-2 years. I used to try to do it myself, but it was a flop. I was fortunate enough to be able to take my pets to work with me, and clean them myself under anesthetic.

Her best fun was doing what she was born to do - race like the wind. We used to take her to the forest preserve where she would race after chipmunks and chomp them dead. Of course, then she would come home and do her next funnest thing - sleep for a week.
She did like tearing the squeakers out of dog toys. That was also fun.

Our Malinois, Breccia, perfected the squeakectomy. She could have the squeaker out in about 30 seconds. We ended up buying about 40 bone shaped plush toys from the dollar store and a couple of hundred replacement squeakers. About every month my wife would replace all the squeakers and sew up the hole. We probably reused those toys dozens of times.

In Conor's younger days, he perfected the earectomy. Any new dog toy that came in the house that had ears was in for some rough treatment. Once the ears had been removed (or shredded beyond recognition), he usually left them alone, but occasionally would go for tails and feet. But he seemed to have a visceral hatred of any toy with ears!

62 Thanks for the comments about Seamus. I rescued him when he was 7 years old (Petco snuck in an adoption event on a Sunday, the sneaky buggers). His owners had six other cats, got a kitten and dumped him at the shelter. He fixed the tractor beam stare on me when I walked into Petco and that was it. His original name was Mow Mow or some stupid thing, the shelter people called him Danny. I named him Seamus because I thought he looked like a big mick. He learned his new name the first day home. Pretty smart guy.

I have discovered recently she loves corn chips. She will come begging for them if she sees me. She ll eat them over strawberries, which makes her as human as the rest of us.

94 FenSpouse has a joke about almost ANY dog we pass while driving. He says "It looks like Becket". Becket was our black hairy mix of terrier and something else. He was about 60 lbs Sadly, he had to be put to sleep several years ago. Anyway, it's kind of amusing if the dog in question which he says this about looks like the slender white whippet, Emily, in the second picture and nothing like Becket. I assume other people have spouses that make the same jokes over and over again. Becket has only been gone for a few years, so it's not like other jokes my husband has been making for 30 years. And yes, I love my husband.

99 I dropped by my ex's yesterday and got to see my godkitteh Maceo (aka dogbear). His (orange) hair is short-medium, but it's the finest hair I've ever seen on a cat. It makes him incredibly smooth. He has a mug much like Seamus and he gave me lots of blinky eye, then rubbed up against me and put his left paw out. He does that, it's so cool. I think mama's trying to teach him a high-five. Then Maceo (who's tail was amputated at 4" giving him a cute stump) sat down on my foot, which is his way of showing endearment. (Given that he weighs about 10", it doesn't hurt.) Then I snuggled up with Pretty Girl last night. Kittehs <3

106 Bean Counteress of Rohan, I am so sorry about Seamus. Orange boys are the very best of all the kittehs.

The best thing I ever did for my big dog Sophie when I got her was take her out to the vet every chance I got. I would check her weight and give her a cookie or two for being a good girl, and she developed the notion that the vet's office was where the cookies lived. And except for getting her temp taken and the vet trying to look in her ears (we don't do that any more), she adores visiting.

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden provided an important White House pet update during an exclusive interview with Craig Melvin that aired Friday on TODAY.

The couple said a new cat will soon be joining their German shepherds, Major and Champ, as four-legged members of the first family.

"So let me get this straight," Craig quipped. "Major Biden, who's clearly had some trouble adjusting to life at the White House, now he's going to be forced to contend with a cat as well in the White House."

Jill Biden then explained that part of Major's training involved spending time in a shelter with cats to prepare for his new companion.

"He did fine," she added.

Junior-ette's Maine Coon, MegaRoy, is either a freaking g genius. Or he's dumber than a hammer. I swear he knows how to turn a door know. But he will whine and piss and come chivy me off my ass to do it for him.

So. Genius for getting g me off my ass or too dumb to breathe for not doing it himself. I've seen him with both paws on the door knobs twisting at then. I've also found doors that I knew were closed, now open.

He also hides and ambushes my inebriated self when it's dark.

I've had several, Fen. Tatiana the Wonder Siberian lived for the throw and retrieve game -- in her case, a series of soft rubber balls she could hold in her mouth. Arizona the part-Maine Coon would do it occasionally, and Chekov D. Siberian, though not as enthusiastic about it as his aunt Tatiana, will run after a hard plastic rattle ball and bring it back. It's just to continue the game, I'm sure, not to please me.

Big black Wolf cat did spend time outdoors, but he likes his indoor life. One evening I came home and found that maintenance people had been there, and Wolf was nowhere to be found. Worried that he'd run out, I went to look and call for him. Two calls, and he came running out from under the step two doors down, and was glad to be picked up and toted back inside.

Another time, in good weather, I'd gone out to wax my car, and left the screen door unlatched by mistake. I came back to find him sprawled 5 feet from the door, just enjoying the sunlight. Like the woman in the Reba McIntyre song, he doesn't want to leave; he's just wondering if there's life out there.

121 My big project this week was building a handicap ramp for my primary dog. He can go down stairs but not up due to a bad hip. So he would go out to do his business then bat like a hound to have us bring him around front.

Got it built but then old dog new tricks. With an hour and a half of training and sufficient snacks he got it! Saves lots of trouble for everyone.

Arizona my part Coon once did something similar. I'd fed him something from a new can of food that he didn't like. At that point we had his food and water only a short distance from his litter box -- not a good idea, but he didn't mind. I heard a scraping noise. He'd scooped litter from his box into his food bowl and walked off, tail in the air. Once I finished laughing, I cleaned up and gave him food from a fresh can. He gobbled it. Possibly there was something wrong with the first can. But his gesture was darn near human. "What IS this crap?"
