The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Lord Acton (and others) understood very well that:

Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
And nowhere in the free world is it more evident than Israel, and the interminable rule of Benjamin Netanyahu. He has been Prime Minister since 1996! 25 years is far too long. He has become corrupt, venal, and so protective of his power that he will do literally anything to hold onto it.

Netanyahu keeps saving Israel's Left from the Right

FOR DECADES, Israeli-Arab politicians have abused the state - and their own people. By confusing the Knesset with the United Nations, they self-destructively used their platform to direct abuse against Israel for existing rather than to direct resources for helping all Israelis coexist.
So guess who Netanyahu is courting to create a coalition so that once again he can be Prime Minister? At this point I have very little confidence that he has the best interests of his country at the forefront of his political maneuvering.

This is exactly what the Democrat Party in this country has done...allied itself with the hard Left to maintain their power, ignoring the possibly existential damage such a coalition will do. Add in the profound corruption of Chinese influence, and it is difficult to arrive at any conclusion other than they simply do not care if they destroy their own country as long as their power is undiminished.

Will term limits in Israel help? Sure...a little. How about here? Yes, but the power will shift from the elected leaders who term-limit out to the party organizations and, in a cruel twist, the deep state's unelected bureaucrats will gain even more control.

Thoreau's "that government is best which governs least" is the only rational solution, but we are long past the point at which we can shrink government without a true revolution.

The damage has been done. America has been convinced that government truly is here to help, even though the incredible mass of evidence shows that it is exactly the opposite; that everything government touches...dies. So the politicians continue to sacrifice the country on the altar of power, hoping that we just won't notice.

And so far they have been correct!

56 Oh man. One of my coworkers lives in Quebec. He is describing the new 'Rona restrictions in that province. The only conclusion that I can draw is that their provincial government is actively trying to kill its population. In response to a "spike" over the past week:
All "non-essential" businesses are closed. There is a 20:00 curfew, running to 05:00. All "essential" businesses must close by 19:30 to make sure you get home by curfew. Anyone who is "essential" and must work during the curfew has to have an official note from his boss. Aggressive masking and distancing rules during non-curfew periods, indoors and out.

They *want* their people to be dead. There is no other explanation. The amount of economic damage they're doing, the social damage they're doing, the increased population density during open hours, all of it is going to kill a whole lot of people and destroy things for a long time - and they're doing it all well after it is clearly demonstrated that these methods are ineffective. Their governors should be arrested, tried and executed for what they're doing.

And it'll come here if the usurper's cabal gets its way and overcomes the preference cascade.

Nice axiom, but "stand down" has been the form of "limited government" that the Leftists/DeepState use to advance their shock troops (Antifa, BLM, the coup) and allows all sorts of racism against whites, bigotry against Christians. --

The "Stand Down" by Barr and other pretenders has been perhaps their most powerful weapon, with their #2Weeks promises that are simply appease/delay tactics. We move toward "less government" only if government strictly enforces the law equally, and ferociously when our liberty is threatened. --

Sure, culture is upstream, but they infiltrated and (often covertly) are ruling against "the culture" right now. Selective enforcement, but worse, fabricated "crimes" means no enforcement of real law, only political thought crimes to destroy patriots. We need More (legit) Government at the moment, in the face of vast criminal/treasonous warfare.

I have struggled with this point myself. It's a double-edged sword. Paying off debt in an inflationary environment is objectively a bad use of money, because the servicing costs are a decreasing amount of your income if your debts don't rise. That frees up unencumbered capital to do other things that may have much better returns that alleviating the interest you're paying.

There is a flip side to that, though: flexibility. If you have no debt, you may end up with less money at the end of the cycle than if you had kept the debt and used the freed capital for other things - but it also holds you where you are and raises risks. If you lose your job and have significant debts, you're suddenly in rather a lot of trouble. If you hate your job and want to quit and earn less, or to pull up stakes and go somewhere else even if it means hitting your bottom line, or any number of other things, debt limits those choices.

It's tough.

I think I figured out why Delta did this. What do I see on the news this morning? Delta is rolling back some of its 'Rona-related constraints and is again selling - and filling - middle seats.

Now it makes sense. They are making a move that will piss off the Karens, so they made an advance payment to the Social Justice Committee by making inflammatory statements about GA's new law. This gives them two things: a good distraction from the significant business change they just made, and a fallback defense when Karen, Inc. applies pressure.

Out income has more than doubled in the last three years or so. We've moved into a bigger house.

And yet we still kind of feel like we are fresh out of college because we put so much towards those stupid debt payments. Then we consider how much interest we've already paid (about half of the total loan amount), and we get more determined.

181 There is a flip side to that, though: flexibility.

It's tough.

I've struggled with this too, and came down on the side of paying off debt (especially student loan debt, from which I will hopefully be freed this year). In the end, it might not be the most efficient use of capital, but it does offer greater flexibility. Besides, I've been aggressively paying student loans off for years -- if I don't finish the job now, they will linger on for who knows how long.

No, not really. As you said, it is objectively stupid to pay off debt in an inflationary environment, so use the funds to purchase inflation protected assets. They can be relatively liquid, so if the worst happens you can recover some or all of the cash.

But paying off stuff like mortgages (low interest debt) is a really bad decision.

247 The (collapse may be coming) wisdom I heard maybe 20 years ago was to buy things that are productive, that have a return. Maybe go in debt for those things (and usually a house with low interest and some tax advantage fits in there). .. But don't go in debt for non-essential depreciating assets, and be frugal.

Maxing out on debt makes sense if we can count on constant inflation and other stable economic factors. But the housing bubble is indicative of why that can be a disaster.

-- imo corporate globalists leveraged up incredibly, got rich, then got bailed out, now "run the world". But the little guy lost his home, is now losing his business ... another shock like a market crash might wipe out many that counted on constant inflation (even though that is why BigGov is printing trillions, put on the fed balance sheet ... but that could collapse)

In more rational times, paying off debt was the best course of action. Now, having liquid cash available is the safest bet. I recommend piling on the debt with a new low rate mortgage. We're going into an inflationary cycle, so you'll be making payments with cheaper money.

Cash gives you the flexibility and security to take advantage of opportunities and the ability to weather any adverse changes in your life.

273 re: cases increasing

I have a little info on that

so we have to keep getting the kids tested for school. which sucks, btw. like I think basically after every school break, they all have to have a neg. test to return.

I pay out the butt for the rapid test, b/c the free/cheap option is the PCR one. the rapid test is 99 percent accurate, and fast. the PCR is only 88 percent accurate! this is listed on some of the testing company sites! 88 percent accurate and they specifically say it has a 12 percent rate of false positives. but I can THAT one for $20 (for asymptomatic testee) whereas the rapidtest is $75

another wrinkle - if you say your symptomatic (aka, you lie) you get tested with PCR one for free at many, many locations.

guess what the state of PA will do with those kids/people? do you think they count as "cases" regardless of the test result? because I sure do.

the schools are all testing like crazy here now. I think that's the cause of the rise in "cases" frankly.

My house was built in 1898 and I live it. In my burg, the most sought after houses are the oldest houses. On a sq ft basis a house like mine is 50-75% more than a newly built home in a sterile, cookie cutter subdivision.

Posted by: Joe XiDen at April 01, 2021 11:08 AM (stzSa)

349 Just another word on mortgages...

Assume you're a 56 year old making decent money, getting ready for retirement in 10 years. All the old wisdom says pay off the house and increase your savings as much as possible.

Great plan. However, if your boss walks in tomorrow and fires you, you're screwed. Nobody is going to hire you for anywhere near your previous salary. That emergency fund you saved is only going to carry you for 5 or 6 months. You can't go back and mortgage your largest asset because you don't have an income. The bank is in good shape because your mortgage is either paid off or very close to being paid off.

Thank God. We wouldn't want the bank to suffer.

If you had the house mortgaged and had the money invested, you would be in good shape. You could sell the house or in the worst case, walk away. Your cash is safe. The rule is, take care of yourself and your family first. Worry about the creditors later.

351 I'm dubious about this country ever having honest elections in the future. Congress is so totally corrupt, dysfunctional and arrogantly stupid it's beyond fixing in its current state. A complete dissolution is necessary.

To fix Congress we'd need term limits, some sort of financial reform and a process to keep the representatives in their home states/districts from most of the year. Maybe convene congress quarterly for a week or two.

Lastly, there must be a mechanism the people can use to remove the fucktards if they go off the reservation. No more "self monitoring" or other stupid shit they vote for themselves.

Posted by: Leagleoh at April 01, 2021 12:08 PM (cli7p)

358 Man - I have so much respect for you CBD, and yet so many things wrong in this post. Bibi has not been PM between 1999 and 2007. Bibi has not been convicted, many of the cases are the result of corrupt push by Obama admin, some are ridiculous some are borderline, check Dershowitz's opinion on it.

There's a political schism in Israel in that after many years of personal political attacks on Bibi, many just want him gone, while at the same time - most are aware that if the left takes hold their international and security agenda is unknown and mostly dictated by EU/UN who don't care about terrorism, or rights of Jews on the land.

Involving the Arab parties is a last resort out of an impossible parliamentary quagmire.

So much more complicated, it cannot be quickly explained away.

360 I have to disagree with you on this one which is rare..... at every turn, Bibi has been a better choice than his opponents - especially those who were financed and supported by the Obama administration. Several of those close wins have been against individuals who would hand Israel over to Hamas - and it's what they campaigned to do.

Posted by: 2nd Amendment Mother at April 01, 2021 01:33 PM (V6j8C)

361 Very horribly incorrect.

Mr. Netanyahu has NOT been PM of Israel since 1996. He was PM from 1996-1999 (when Ehud Barak beat him with the help of President Clinton's operatives), and again from 2009 to now. From 1999 to 2009 Israeli governments were led by Ehud Barak, Ariel Sharon and Ehud Olmert.
