164 I think art is derived from either great skill or great passion.

The former group can sustain long careers because their skill allows them to produce quality work that only improves with time.

The latter tend to produce in fits and spurts as their waves of craziness ebb and flow.

185 Shakespeare - if read - should be read aloud. Yep, even if you are alone in a locked room.

Reading aloud frees you from the forced chant-like meter and gives you time to consider the words and meanings. Don't believe me? Try it.

Read the Hamlet 'to be or not to be' soliloquy and/or the MacBeth 'Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow' speech. Take your time and read it as though you were speaking to a third party. The language comes alive.

Then, when you watch a performance, you will find yourself immersed in the experience.

Given how much Twitter loves them they probably think they can get those lazy shift abouts to buy their product, not realizing the Twitter crowd doesn't pay for anything they don't have to and they know all the pirate sites. Plus watching stuff would take them off Twitter, so not so much on doing other things.

Have you ever noticed how few people can read aloud well? And the younger they are, the worse it gets. I taught myself to read well aloud by following your prescription above: just reading Shakespeare speeches out loud by myself. Then I'd branch out to reading passages from fiction out loud.

Sometimes I'd pretend I was onstage, performing a role, but mostly I was pretending that what I was saying was real. We don't talk to each other in a stiff, monotonous robot voice because what we're saying is real, but when it comes to written words, we don't apply the same rule.

Shakespeare read undermines the comedy most. Hearing it and watching the performance highlights the comedic elements more than parsing every word.

"The Taming of the Shrew" is a brilliant movie.

It absolutely is. I think it's a great introduction for people who think Shakespeare is boring and impossible to understand. So many visual jokes. Compare it to Jonathan Miller's plonking version filmed for the BBC Shakespeare series. He actually cast John Cleese as Petruchio, and yet there was hardly a laugh in the whole thing.

I watched the whole boring thing on PBS when it first aired, and worst of all, it was followed by an interview with Miller (and maybe Cleese, I can't remember now) where he actually SNEERED at the Richard Burton/Elizabeth Taylor film version because it was too fun-loving and energetic. What a nose-in-the-air snob.

Posted by: Dr. Mabuse at April 27, 2021 10:13 AM (tmDma)

402 Kevin Smith had some interesting things early on (and Mallrats) but once he took up weed to get in touch with his inner creativity whatever spark he had seems to have been extinguished. I guess he can still be funny with his tales from his experiences to people who go to those shows but I don't think I have looked forward to his creative input in over a decade and a half.
Posted by: Bete at April 27, 2021 09:03 AM (Ojki1)
I always thought that what it was was that Kevin Smith had a small endearing and different way of doing a little specialized thing, but deeply wanted to be a Big Important Director. He just can't do that no matter how he tries. Like if Chico Marx insisted on trying to be John Ford.

See, I think the Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton version accurately represents the original work, because the period in which the play was written would have had over the top performances on the stage.
