So, did they nail him in the palms of his hands or at his wrists?
I've seen both. Posted by: Sponge.....Probably neither. Through the palms would not have supported an adult for very long.. through the wrists, they probably would have bled out quickly. Crucifixion was both a form of tortuous death, and meant to be an example to keep the populace in check. They wanted the victims to up there for a long long time. Chi-Town Jerry,
A journal article in JAMA in the 1980's explained how horrible the treatment of Jesus was in light of our understanding of physiology. Each step of the process made it worse including the sweating of blood, scourging, crucifixion, and then the spear. Sobering reading about man's inhumanity to man. Good Friday seems like a strange name!
It's named from our perspective. To the World, this Jesus guy was put to death and 'his' story ended. But the faithful know that was the day our sins were paid for and us forgiven. Easter is more clearly celebratory as it backs up His promise of resurrection, but our freedom was bought on Good Friday. Posted by: Methos at April 02, 2021 08:39 AM (kOpft) 41

Quite it is why the Asians tended to crucify folks on X shapes instead and lash people's arms over their head. You are going to die, but one death is relatively quick whereas the other lasts for about a day and a half until you drown. Posted by: sven at April 02, 2021 08:40 AM (Lzpvj) 42

As a young kid today was the official start of what we called Church Summer. For 3 days we went to morning and evening services.
There was the food, the flowers, the gatherings of the "olds" and the church summer camp planning of all the young'ns. It seemed at the time to be the way it always had been, but in reality it only lasted 5 or so years. Slowly the times changed. I remember the faces, and the some of the names, but it was certainly a much simpler time for all of us. Thank you CBD, this made me remember to remember. So, did they nail him in the palms of his hands or at his wrists?
I've seen both. Posted by: Sponge - Saying Ashli Babbitt at April 02, 2021 *** It's been discussed quite a bit. From what I've read, it's more likely the soldiers hammered the nails through the wrists. The palm bones would not have been strong enough to support the weight of the upper body. Though the feet fastened to the upright would have served to support the weight too; so, who knows. Driving the nails through the wrists would likely have speeded up the process of death -- exsanguination from the wrist arteries. A guess. There were two forms of crucifixion in Roman times, at least as far as arms go. One involved tying the victim to the cross, while the other drove nails through the wrists. Nails through the wrists was considered the merciful method because, as was stated, between pain and blood loss the victim died sooner. Otherwise, he lasted as long as he could put weight on his legs and take the pressure off his lungs. This is why, when they wanted them dead before Passover, they broke the legs of the thieves.
This was as dark as the world ever got, and the painting captures it well. The Christ of God was being brutally slaughtered by a pagan, occupying power. Van Rijn appears to capture His agony at His lowest point, crying out to the Father "why have You abandoned me?!" But He knew. "It is done," and Creation wept, holding its breath. And so we go on, persevering as best we can though we crucify Him daily with our own sin. To all the faithful, I wish you all a blessed Good Friday! To those who do not follow, we love you. Now look at the painting one more time: that's how much He loves you. Posted by: M. Bibliophile at April 02, 2021 08:57 AM (9qvik) 89

This is an image so central to Western Civilization that we have forgotten how shocking the idea that someone who died the horrible death of a slave could be God, could be triumphing over his torturers. Imagine the reaction of Tiberius if someone had told him that by far the most important event in his reign was the death by Crucifixion of a street preacher in the backwater of Judea. Tiberius was pretty grim, but that would have made him laugh.

I believe I've read where the most agony of crucifixion lies not in the nails in the arms or hands but in the stress put on the diaphragm by hanging down causing the victim to never completely catch their breath. Usually with NO nails or support of the feet. That would lessen the effect as they could take some weight off their arms and allow them to breathe but it would make the agony last longer.
And eventually they stab the victim in the stomach or side this also affects the diaphragms function and the blood loss finally does them in. The most used cross was an "X" shape. Easier to put up. Posted by: jakee308 at April 02, 2021 09:03 AM (ZLL8y) 108

Quite, as alluded to upthread you eventually drown because the physical agitation put on your core eventually starts fluid build up since you are at an ever increasing oxygen deficit. T shaped crucifixion was actually (perversely) thought of as a humane nod to an offender who had not earned ire and may have been a sarcastic mockery of in Roman eyes Christ's "exalted status." If it was they chose poorly. Posted by: sven at April 02, 2021 09:06 AM (Lzpvj) 124

Catholics who grew up in the '60's and '70's were poorly catechized It was the era of Sister Pantsuit and Fr. Groovy. When non-Catholic friends ask me about the terrible ruler-wielding nuns, I say "are you kidding me? The nuns played 'Jesus Christ Superstar' in religion class." I thought that was cool at the time, but now I realize what a shame - a church with a rich tradition, thinking the way to keep young people interested was not teaching them that tradition, but hanging up awful felt banners in churches. I too have a lot to learn - the Church itself didn't teach me. Posted by: Donna&&&&&V at April 02, 2021 09:09 AM (HabA/) Posted by: scottst at April 02, 2021 09:09 AM (/QQch) 135
My one family Good Friday story was when my Auntie Kay went out to visit our grandmother for the holiday. You've got to imagine a cold, bleak northern Alberta farm, spring not even begun yet. My aunt was so bored she began knitting, and my not-at-all religious grandma said to her, "Kay, we don't do that on Good Friday!" "So I sat and smoked," finished my aunt.

But for me, this is the most corrosive thing that the state can do. There is nothing that makes me *less* motivated to achieve, to rise, to earn, to consume, to expand. There are few things out there that make me think, "that's it, then. There's no point. I don't care anymore. I can earn more or less, live better or worse, whatever. It's all the same because nothing I do matters anyway" but this is one of them. I worked my balls off and lived like a pauper for *years* to get that millstone off of my neck. I deferred gratification, deferred consumption, did without and did so for a long time. I did it and it doesn't matter. That's why the legs of the two criminals crucified next to Jesus have their legs broken. Once you couldn't push yourself up to breathe, you died pretty quickly. Dems reward their voters. Black farmers get money white farmers dont. Starbucks employees get $50k. Unions will get trillions via the GND. And so on.
Compare that with when the GOP is in power. Their voters get nada. Well except for a few crumbs from a tax cut that benefits their donor class. Posted by: Joe XiDen at April 02, 2021 09:20 AM (wyszq) 183
Make student loans dischargeable in bankruptcy and the whole house of cards comes crashing down. But the Bush administration made sure to prevent that.

The whole school debt thing?
Yeah that should somehow be laid on the schools who have large funds for support and who primarily gained from the school loans. At a time when the cost of living was going up, the schools tuition were double and triple the rate. This is from paying professors exorbitant salaries and then having the classes actually taught by adjunct professors and grad students. Somehow the schools should have to cover the forgiveness of those loans. Posted by: jakee308 at April 02, 2021 09:22 AM (ZLL8y) 190

Few thoughts about student loans.
Like most things, including federal supported mortgage loans, easier credit boosts prices. FNMA and Freddie Mac and the FHA are just another side of the coin to the student loan issue. Federally guaranteed loans means more people will buy the home or go to college. It also supports people that work in the home building and higher education. But, at the cost of raising prices due to demand. So both homes and college become more expensive. Coupled with that fact, Griggs v. Duke Power decision more or less required extrinsic credentials rather than direct experience and relevant job tests for many jobs. This has increased the demand for higher ed which also increased demand and prices. Posted by: whig at April 02, 2021 09:28 AM (pO7gM) 224

I agree on the home mortgage issue. Subsidizing loans makes homes more expensive. You save $100 a month in payment but the house costs $100 a month more over the course of 30 years. It is a wash for buyers but the home industry benefits. But even without Fannie or Freddie there would still be a demand for mortgages at reasonable rates and home prices. If prices appreciation was 10% a year for the past 50 years nobody would buy houses and prices would fall. As far as college goes, prices never fall because the govt is always there to subsidize. And that is why it costs $30k a year to attend a mid level state U. Or in another words everything the gift touches goes to shit. Posted by: Joe XiDen at April 02, 2021 09:34 AM (wyszq) 258

And here's another reason that student loan stuff is so bonkers with regard to the level of trust: a lot of college students commit massive financial fraud all the time. What follows is anecdote, but if it is generally true as it was for me, then oh dear.
I was speaking with a classmate who was worried that she had racked up like $15k in credit card debt. Many others were in a similar boat. I asked them how that happened. I had one credit card and it had like a $750 limit. They asked me how I filled out the paperwork, and then we found the distinction. I was honest that I was a student earning next to nothing. They put down that they had high incomes, and got high credit limits (and a big capacity for serious trouble). They just lied about it. 257 Joe Xiden,
Also true on medical expenses, Medicare and Medicaid have inflated the general costs of health care. Like the law of supply and demand, subsidizing consumers on something means you get more of it and it is more expensive because more people are chasing after the same good. Due in part to Keynes, the general government mood has been inflation is much better than deflation. This is in direct contradiction to Sec. of Treasury Mellon's argument during the 1920-21 recession that deflation chases the rottenness out of the system and better a short sharp shock that resets values and purges bad debts than inflating it away. That more or less bakes in deflation as a way of doing that. But, since the 1930's, governments have more or less agreed with Keynes and have inflated away. I've heard that the palm vs wrist answer may actually be "both". The nail is hammered diagonally through the middle of the palm so that it emerges from the wrist on the dorsal part of the arm. This aligns with some major nerves for extra pain, provides greater mechanical support, and prevents a quick exsanguination.

For those interested, administrative and overhead costs now exceed direct instructional costs (ie professors), the changeover happened during Obama's 2nd term.
Most of the deluxe student accommodations come as colleges actively compete on offering lifestyles to attract the 18-22 year old students. Most of these additions were paid for by issuing bonds and thus money is needed to service debts. An professor has put together financial measures for colleges as to which will survive and which will not based on debt, projected enrollments, and competition with other schools. Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at April 02, 2021 09:23 AM (2JVJo) For your Easter week dose of blasphemy, there's "Resurrection" (200 currently streaming. If one of those "Seven" rip-off movies, staring and written by the Highlander guy and directed by the Highlander director. The what the hell premise is that there's a serial killer chopping limbs, heads, torsos off people with apostle's names and professions with the goal of building Jesus a body so He can come back. Yes, it's as stupid as it sounds. The whole point of the movie is to show the mutilated, chopped up, gory, dog's breakfast of Jesus on the Cross to give you stoooopid Christians a kick to the nuts or for the ladies, a cunt punt. So, no Our Betters won't show Easter related movies but they will make this piece of crap available for streaming. Watch if you wish, but it's just a lousy movie. Poorly made aside from the blasphemy. Posted by: naturalfake at April 02, 2021 09:51 AM (dWwl8) 354

Divine sacrifice is a weird thing in religions. Nordic Paganism has Odin deciding on a lark to hang himself for 9 days for wisdom, of course less advertised and an early example of "cuck" is Uller screwing Frigga while he was gone and Odin shrugging over it. God made a covenant with the Jews. That original covenant still stands because God doesn't go back on his promises. Christ's death and resurrection brings the rest of us into the covenant, so we're included in salvation as well. There are lots of theologians on YouTube who expound this better than I or anybody else can in the comments section of a blog. I like Bishop Barron but if you prefer a non-Catholic, N.T. I just don't fathom God's plan for us working that way.
I have found in the past that the parts that I struggle with most in Christianity are the ones I most benefit from studying and reading the Bible about. There would be something really wrong with the faith if it made perfect sense and fit exactly what we want. I mean, if its true and is part of something bigger and greater than us, by an all-powerful, all-knowing God, its necessarily going to have places our limited understanding and sinful hearts balk at or cannot quite grasp. 377 Colorado Alex, The dems in Congress are pushing Biden to do it via executive order. In part, the loan forgiveness tax moratorium in the new Covid relief bill just passed, was designed to give Biden leeway to do it. If challenged in court, the Ed. Sec. can point to the clause as a sign that Congress blessed the deal.
Current student loan laws (these are only the federal guaranteed ones) give indeterminate leeway regarding financial relief such as suspending loan payments, interest waiving, etc. That being said, Biden already said he had the power to dismiss $10 k in loans per person which I am unclear where the specific legislative authority comes from. Yeah. When you retire, have a plan.
Not a financial plan (that would be good) but a plan to keep yourself occupied. Depending on your job you've spent at minimum 40 hours a week absorbed by and attentive to your work. When that goes away, what will you do with the time? And it's prime daylight time. Sure everyone manages for 2-3 years. Catching up on stuff doing things they wanted to do. But eventually you run out of stuff that's new and the money to do them. Have a hobby or a long term plan to occupy your time. If you can also get out from under your wife's feet that will be great also. Posted by: jakee308 at April 02, 2021 10:01 AM (ZLL8y) 411

Wright is also good. I'm sure other people here have other suggestions. Posted by: Donna&&&&&V at April 02, 2021 09:58 AM (HabA/) So what's the covenant? That we go to heaven when we die? Depending on your job you've spent at minimum 40 hours a week absorbed by and attentive to your work. When that goes away, what will you do with the time? And it's prime daylight time.
Sure everyone manages for 2-3 years. Catching up on stuff doing things they wanted to do. But eventually you run out of stuff that's new and the money to do them. The more I understand the truth of the gospel, the humbler it forces me to be and the more I must rely on God. It was the doing and dying of Jesus Christ that saved me, not my great acts or person. His perfect life lived in my place presents God with sinless obedience. His sacrificial death in my place pays the complete price for the sins I do commit.

This was as dark as the world ever got, and the painting captures it well. The Christ of God was being brutally slaughtered by a pagan, occupying power. ...
Again, read the Gospels. Read Exodus. Read or watch theologians who have grappled with these questions for 2000 years. As Christopher Taylor says, you seem to want easy answers. Or maybe you just want to argue. I don't particularly feel like it on Good Friday. You're not the first person to have thought up the questions you have. It's like a few years back, when Stephen Fry, an atheist, said if God, why do children get cancer and all these people on YouTube were saying "he DESTROYED Christianity." Yeah, sure, that's original. As if believers haven't been asking why good people suffer since the Book of Job was written. Posted by: Donna&&&&&V at April 02, 2021 10:19 AM (HabA/) 462

------------- I question everything. It's just the way my mind works. I do believe in God to the bottom of my soul and he's presented himself to me in a way I understand personally. And I do believe that Jesus gave us the way that would happen. I guess I'm just not much of a believer in religion. The "I'm right and you're wrong" turns me away from it. Weren't people being saved by Jesus prior to to his trip to Jerusalem?
Posted by: Justsayin' at April 02, 2021 09:38 AM (Fs5vw) No, the Gate of Heaven was closed before that. The holy were in Limbo after they died, but until Christ made his sacrifice as the Lamb of God, they weren't in heaven. After our Redeemer made that sacrifice, the saints get to go straight to heaven after their death, the rest us sinners go to Purgatory to serve-out our temporal punishment. If you think you are not a sinner with nothing to repent, I'm pretty sure you're ultimate destination is not Heaven. That's God's decision, He is the just judge.
