In Salem, Oregon an elderly man pulled a gun on a number of Antifa protesters who vandalized his truck, breaking out windows and spraying paint on his windshield. But police arrested him while seemingly ignoring the antagonists. The truck was part of a Trump-supporting caravan that was driving past the capitol building in Salem on Sunday. Antifa members broke out the truck’s taillights, broke at least one window, and sprayed paint across the windshield. The driver proceeded to get out of the vehicle. He was open-carrying and when he saw what they had done and realized they were threatening him with pepper spray and batons, he pulled his gun and told them to get away from him.
I give the truck owner kudos for not shooting the scum involved in this situation.

But in recent years, the company has increasingly focused attention on the logistics space, and today is unveiling a new robot with just one application in mind: moving boxes in warehouses. The robot is called Stretch and looks relatively dull for a Boston Dynamics creation. It’s not modeled after humans or animals, and instead aims to be as practical as possible. An Iowa gun store refused to sell a semi-automatic rifle to a heavily armed and agitated Colorado man who said he was surprised his friends didn’t suspect he was the Boulder mass shooter, according to federal court documents released Friday. The Nebraska State Patrol initially arrested the self-described firearms enthusiast, Adam Vannoy, 40, on March 14 on Interstate 80 in Lancaster County. Another driver had called police to report he was driving recklessly at about 120 mph. During a search of his packed truck, troopers seized a handgun from Vannoy’s jacket, a loaded AR-style semi-automatic rifle with an illegal silencer, four other firearms, ammunition, a bulletproof blanket and vest, two brown wigs and an Air Force costume. They also found marijuana. They jailed the Denver man on weapons and drug charges. He was released after posting $5,000 bond on March 17, even though he threatened to kill a guard, exposed his penis to guards and threw feces from his cell into a common area, according to a federal complaint unsealed Friday. Six days later, on Tuesday, Vannoy tried to purchase an AR-style rifle from Sportsman’s Warehouse in Ankeny, Iowa, near Des Moines, the complaint said. The store denied the sale after Vannoy said he was surprised his friends hadn’t called to find out if he was responsible for Monday’s shooting in Boulder. A 21-year-old man is charged with killing 10 people at a grocery store. Vannoy also said he had 500 rounds of ammunition in his truck. In addition to denying the sale, the store notified the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives about his comments. Agents arrested Vannoy in Iowa this week on a new federal charge stemming from the Nebraska traffic stop, illegal possession of a firearm as an unlawful user of marijuana. Vannoy was scheduled to make an initial court appearance in Iowa on Friday afternoon, before facing transfer to Nebraska for further proceedings. Videos posted by Vannoy on Instagram show he purchased several firearms and ammunition at Brownell’s, a large retailer in Grinnell, Iowa, after his release from Nebraska custody. He said on the videos that the best way to show the Nebraska State Patrol that he wasn’t plotting anything nefarious was to rearm himself.

I have spent way too much time unloading trucks not to call BS, for now anyway. Reality is boxes of all shapes and sizes, occasionally crushed or leaking anything from bleach to applesauce, often wedged into place by inertia from the movement of the trailer in transit. Then they get placed onto a roller system that is backing up with cartons, because sorting the boxes as they come off is far slower than just slinging them onto the rollers. And the loading dock they showed was a joke. Square footage costs money. Square footage gets used, and filled with random stuff, often palletized.
It's the equivalent of proclaiming the advent of self driving cars because they got one to go around a controlled track with minimal obstacles in good weather under controlled conditions. They got a ways to go before this puts anyone out of a job.

Frank Zappa was a brilliant arranger and producer. His records are really awesome displays of recording technique. He was also a terrific guitarist.
As a songwriter, though, his work falls down and doesn't get up. He was able to make a great opening, but that typically degenerated into wankery.

When I worked for Emery WorldWide we had one guy per slide per module who pushed for 3-5 loaders per slide. There was a three story tall belt driven pulley system that routed and had kickers who sorted the flow to the proper modules.
It was beautiful when it worked and it is the most alive I ever felt.

Dupont had a long-running robotic engineering program in the 80s called "auto doff-don". The idea was that the robot would come up to a spinning position when the current collecting tube core was nearly full, doff it (i.e., remove it) and then don a new tube core (i.e., replace it). An engineer friend who was peripherally involved with it said they'd have been better off putting a human inside of a caged enclosure and ride him / her up and down the route to do the work themselves. The program died a deserved death.
BTW, the term "doff" was used as shorthand for asking whether a pregnant worker had given birth: "Has she doffed yet?" The first Mrs. Krebs thought that was disgusting; I LOLed.

Things like this happened on occasion. Loaded one up got ready to go but didn't know people were still figuring something out and had to break the seal and open it up. They'd pull out and boxes would go out the back. Never good.
One time in the summer, when it would get over 120F in trailers a kid loading fell unconscious from heat exhaustion. Nobody knew. The manager only saw that truck getting behind and sent another kid to finish off. Not seeing him new kid walled unconscious kid in with boxes. The driver was the one who found him, heard muffled screams before he sealed the trailer up for pulling.

Speaking of robots, this was interesting about Amazon, which brags on their robotics and automated facilities (and their carbon footprint, and using electric vehicles and other virtue signaling).
Turns out Amazon's injury rate is a little over twice the norm for the warehouse/shipping industry. And the interesting thing is, with Amazon, it correlates with robotics. The facilities with the most robots and automation have the highest injury rates.
When you can Amazon to comment on this and not just spew some sort of SJW virtue signaling, they mumble something about "you're counting wrong, and we love our workers so much we much more accurately report injuries than our evil competitors" and such like.

It worked for me. After 2 weeks I switched to Meloxicam, which is not a narcotic. My prescription for that has expired, and I didn't ask for more. I don't have any pain anymore.

I only know one person that had a bad reaction to the second shot. Nothing super serious. Others were wiped out for a day or so and the rest (most) felt very little. They were all worried before they got it. I guess you have to drink a lot of water the day you get it.

Here's the thing: I don't need to place reliance on any database. I know a fuckton of people who've gotten the vaccine. None of them have died. None of them have gone blind. None of them, sadly, have actually grown 16" penises. Therefore I can conclude from my own knowledge that any such side effects (and yes, I agree that there will be some people who have them) are quite rare. I know people who've died from COVID-19. I don't know anyone who's died from the vaccine (even though I know a lot more people who've had the vaccine than have had COVID-19).

There are quality differences as well. Some movies are simply of higher quality. Sure it helps to be first, but unfortunately, most sequels and movies playing on the same theme pick the one thing that did not make the original a success, and then they amplify that one thing. Airplane 2 wasn't much as I recall, even with a lot of the same actors.
Some movies are simply better than others. Blazing Saddles was better than Young Frankenstein. Same director, same level of skill there, but one was demonstrably better.

back in the '80's, i was in a medical unit for a few years (long story). one drill weekend, one of the troops broke her leg (another long story). we went to splint it, as trained, and one of the full time paper pushers had a fit, and ordered it NOT done. she also forbid calling the base fire dept, and told us to load the SM into a POV, for transport to Long Beach Navy Hospital's ER, just down the road.
of course, on arrival, the AD staff wanted to know why the patient wasn't immobilized with a splint prior to transport. i filled out a few sworn statements over *that* goat rope.

In the 70's there was a version of that sold. Someone in my family, maybe it was me (I really don't remember!) found one cheap at a garage sale, and we tried it out.
We found it really does cook hot dogs, quite quickly. It just routes 120 V AC power through the hot dog.
But we all agreed that we didn't like how the parts of the hot dog that contacted the spikes got really charred. It was unpleasant to eat the charred ends, and wasteful to throw them out, so we stopped using the thing quickly.
Also, it really only does one thing and it takes up space. And you can't use it to warm a hot dog bun. (If you grill hot dogs in a skillet or griddle you can open a bun and press it into the sizzling hot dog juices.)
