The Morning Report - 3/26/21 [J.J. Sefton]

earnest.jpg

Good morning, kids. Friday and the weekend is here. The big story is of course yesterday's magic show at the White House, wherein a drooling dementia patient was propped up in front of select group of trained chihuahuas in what was supposed to resemble a "presidential press conference." Despite being pumped with a pharmacological cocktail that would make even George Floyd blanche, given a crib sheet and "reporters" playing the role of spreadeagled ginger teenybopper groupie to a Led Zeppelin red snapper, to anyone but a diehard Leftist as braindead as the man himself, Joe Aqualung's performance was a complete disaster. It was the perfect bookend to his triple-Lindy Air Force 1 staircase stumble that sent a clear message that the lights are on but no one's home. That goes not just for Biden but for the alleged national leadership.

From the very first moment of Biden's first press conference, one could tell that the days of Trump press conferences were gone. You remember those days, don't you? Gotcha questions, lectures, fights, interruptions, blatant disrespect -- not from Trump, but from the media. It was they who created a sense of chaos and divisiveness, not Trump. It was very different this time. The media were on their best behavior but even they couldn't protect Biden from himself...

...Speaking of the first moment, Kayleigh McEnany noticed something striking about the press:

Right out of the gate, the White House press corps stands for President Biden. Would have been nice if they would have routinely shown that level of respect for President Trump. I hope this is not indicative of softball questions to come!

Her hope was bound to be disappointed because the media's softballs were something else entirely. Before that, though, Biden made a few statements. To this biased observer, it was obvious that Sleepy Joe had been given an infusion of something to wake him up. Maybe it was just a strong cup of coffee, but his dilated black pupils were unnerving...

...A real attempt at a joke that fell perfectly flat was Biden's bizarre attempt to show that the filibuster is so evil that it doesn't even relate to Jim Crow; instead, it's more closely associated with Jim Crow's evil older cousin, "Jim Eagle"...

...Ominously, though, when asked if he thought he'd be running against Trump in 2024, he said, "I have no idea whether there'll be a Republican party." Given the Democrats' efforts to jettison the filibuster and create permanent one-party rule, that was a worrisome statement...

...The most exciting thing about the press conference, if exciting is the right word, is the frisson of fear every sane person should have felt knowing that Biden is the most powerful man in America and that the Fourth Estate (and, in a way, Fifth Column) will do anything to keep him propped up.

Farcical as yesterday's spectacle appeared, the move to destroy the filibuster and obtain absolute control over the Senate - not that that's so hard given the nature of the GOP in that chamber - the blaming of Trump for the catastrophe at the border and everything else under the sun was a message that came through loud and clear, despite the orifice from whence it emanated.

But while that was going on, there were a couple of other things that took place worthy of note. First, the Ohio legislature finally was able to override Mike DeWine and strip this dweeby poor man's SwiftyLazar of his dictatorial powers that have been inflicted on the citizens of the Buckeye State for over a year. We may rightly go on about Angel of Death Cuomo, Noose 'em Newsom, Wretched Whitmer and all the other despotic Dems who inflicted utter destruction on their states for the sole purpose of trying to sabotage the 2020 election. But DeWine deserves just as much of a comeuppance as any of those.

That brings us to the second item of note: Try not to laugh but Georgia has signed into law sweeping election reforms that immediately drew the ire and rage from the usual quarters:

The legislation includes new restrictions on voting by mail, and increases legislative control over elections in the state. Opponents claim the measure is a needless reaction to former President Trump's claims that widespread voter fraud in the state lead to his defeat there in the 2020 election. Georgia -- a traditionally red state -- narrowly voted for [so-called quote-unquote 'president'] Biden and two Democrat US Senators amid record-breaking turnout in the last election cycle. The new law limits the window in which absentee ballots can be requested, and cuts the number of locations and times ballot drop boxes can be accessed... .

..State Rep. Erica Thomas, a Democrat, who is black, was arrested after knocking on Kemp's door during his speech. The measure was filled with "voter suppression tactics," a top Democrat said. "We are witnessing right now a massive and unabashed assault on voting rights unlike anything we've seen since the Jim Crow era, Senate Minority Leader Gloria Butler said.

I'm sure Christopher Wray and Merrick Garland are drawing up the arrest warrant and indictment for insurrection against Erica Thomas as we speak. Yay, justice. Actually, I wouldn't have objected had Thomas been able to break down the door and kick the shit out of Brian Kemp. Where the hell was Kemp, Brad Raffensberger and the GOP-led Georgia legislature on the night of November 3rd, 2016 and in truth way before that?! Why, they were installing Dominion Systems voting machines and allowing all sorts of breaches of whatever fig leaf of a pretense of voting integrity laws Georgia had because, PANDEMIC! Then, after a mystery water main break that somehow flooded Fulton County and five other states as far north as Michigan causing the vote count to be stopped, observers kicked out and pallets of ballots trucked in, Kemp et al went apeshit on Trump and anyone who dared question the integrity of the election process.

So with that said, what the hell is the purpose of this bill? Better yet, what the hell is the purpose of Brian Kemp and the GOP? Here's your answer: Mitch McConnell and the GOP are signaling that they are willing to compromise on more gun legislation. Just. Fucking. Wow.

Have a great weekend. No, really.

Technically, the former United States is a failed State by definition, and should be treated by other nations as such.

Furthermore, there is no "government" in the traditional sense since there is no Constitution or organizational documents. Basically it is an ad hoc, informal regime made up of warlords.

I fully understand why Russia pulled diplomatic resources out - does a bureaucrat have the authority to dispense billions from the treasury or commit the Democratic Party military to foreign adventures? Because Biden* sure as hell doesn't have that authority according to his handlers.

East coast ports are seeing sustained upticks in incoming cargo from China.

With the new Panamax class ships, it seems to be more economical to come from China through the Panama canal, and directly to the east coast ports than it is to unload on the west coast, and rail stuff over to here.

80 Sure as night follows day, the GOP is there to sell us down the river. Top Republicans Seem Open to Some Kind of Gun Control

"Top Republicans" are the trans "women" who can't compete in male athletics so they compete in the weaker programs.

The Republican party is the weaker political program so those Democrats who aren't full blown America hating Communists transition into Republicans and win out their sinecureships by beating out conservatives within the GOP.

Basically the difference is this: Democrats hate America and Western Civilization, Republicans have no love for America or Western Civilization.

Subtle difference, to no difference when it comes to "difficult" decisions.

If we may be so bold as to quote The Bard:
All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts ...

Are are merely playing our parts, Mr. Sefton. We have had our entrances and will one day - though not one day soon - will have our exits. We have played many parts. The conservative. The honest man. The fighter. The compromiser. The defender. The betrayer. The confident. The supine. Our parts have adapted over time to the changing needs of the story. In 2020, the story needed us to be compromisers and betrayers. We played our roles with aplomb. In 2021, the story needs us to be confident defenders to ensure the audience doesn't abandon us. We are playing that role now.

To combine this with a modern expression, Mr. Sefton, "don't hate the player. Hate the game." This is the game we're playing. The game of power and influence. So buy your tickets, watch the show, make your commentary but never fall into the misapprehension that you actually matter in the slightest.

Sigh, if only. They don't "fail to act" against terror cells and individuals. They *cultivate* them, radicalize them, finance them and help them with planning - all for the purpose of "catching" them in the act and getting a big counter-terrorism media story about how great they are.

Expanding their influence in any way is more of the same and they all know it. Involving them in more background checks won't result in nutjobs not getting guns. It will result in normals *not* getting them, while the nutjobs find clear road ahead to get as many guns as they want, whenever they want them.

All in accordance with what the FBI and its masters in the FedGov actually want: chaos, violence and mayhem. It gives them purpose, and gives them air-cover for more decisive action and broader powers.

A Charlie level at Shell Oil explained what happened in front of the cameras and would take place in the cloak rooms before and after The Show.

Big Oil was brought before Congress to be humiliated, then dragged off stage to be shaken down for campaign contributions and other graft.

160 "When is the last time anyone, even a conservative, has made an
affirmative argument in favor of gun ownership based on the inherent
virtue of gun ownership?"

Been saying it for almost twenty years now - caught a lot of shit over it - but it still holds true. A big portion of "conservatives" are just Big Gub'Mint My Way types. They don't believe in less government - because you or I may do something they don't approve of. They're all for you and I being free to behave exactly as they wish, because "that's how things ought to be".
So no, we're never going to get as much as a sternly worded letter from Capitol Hill on why a free society of citizens, all equal under the law, has every right to own guns - at least as effective as their local police and even to equal the firepower of the military - because frankly, very few people either there or on Main Street USA believe that. They mostly have this fantasy of Johnny Law agreeing with them, and making sure their nutty neighbor doesn't get too out of hand, while they are free to put another steak on the grill and pour another glass of cab.

It would. And the Russians have that capability and likely the willingness to help (or at least look the other way). Russia likes testing new presidents. When Putin tested Trump, Trump launched a sophisticated airstrike that killed every Russian military "advisor" in Syria and destroyed a lot of very expensive physical plant. Nasty business, but a worthwhile investment if you're Putin. He got to learn about his enemy's motivations and willingness to engage.

It would shock me not even a little bit if this is another Russian game of boundary-testing using a Middle Eastern proxy.

Actually, no. The point of Sesame Street was to teach inner-city kids how to read and improve their education. That is why it takes place in a ghetto and uses common commercial TV tropes (including commercial breaks). It was designed from the ground up to appeal to kids and act like a normal TV show. The appeal was targeted at ghetto youth and sought to improve literacy.

It was also a smashing success, unless you're one of the communists who created it. You see, *all* kids who watched Sesame Street did better at reading and arithmetic. It was supposed to only help minority inner-city kids. So even though it worked better than anyone could have reasonably hoped for, it was considered a failure by its creators because it raised all boats.

233 Who could have dreamed that when Nixon visited China that China would
grow to be the manufacturing giant that supports the world.

Everything bad now seems to be the leftovers from the Cold War. Home grown communists whose elders were trained by the USSR. China - which we groomed to be a threat at the Soviet's southern border. A much too big military and police state originally built and fervently supported by entire generations raised to fear the Red Menace.
Now all that shit is turned on us - even though the original purpose for all of it is long gone. I don't think, twenty years from now, that anyone will be seen as the winner of the Cold War. We just lingered a bit longer than they did.

No. Only a nice tight six state tracker. Surface shipping has a very low rate of speed and limited ability to get outside of an inertial guidance system. Difficult part would be the thermal load on the airframe from flying so low, and so long deep down in the thick atmosphere and the batteries to keep it alive. Optical image recognition in the seeker would allow the guidance system 'search' between adjacent vessels in the field of view. Anything operating at that altitude will have the divert G reserve to acquire, divert, and impact. Garage technology, except for the solid booster motor.

240 Most anti-ship missiles are huge, designed to "kill" the ship with one shot. The exception being those fired from planes, like the US "Harpoon" which will seriously fuck up even a mega-ton commercial cargo ship.

The photos of the damage to the Israeli ship are minor, so I'm going to presume the missile was a mobile, smallish one, probably similar to the Russian "Styx" which can be launched from a flatbed truck. (Not a Toyota, more like a large military truck.) Their range is typically under 100nm.

Mostly deserted cities and towns due to disease, starvation and dangerous new species of deliberately mutated animals. New species like the ones I was hunting/being hunted by. Spider Orangutans. Extremely nasty and hard to kill. While still having only 4 arms, these could lengthen up to 30 feet to climb or grab prey like a chameleon's tongue. A scream that could shatter your head. Webs. Hard-as-steel spun webs that somehow bend light to render the material almost invisible, yet the non-sticky web surrounding their egg sacs was useful for body armor and near-invisible ghille suits. Hunting them in a deserted Denver. Strangely detailed dream.

You have no idea how refreshing it is to meet new people and not have to be guarded about your conservatism, people open up about politics after they find out you're not from COW. California, Oregon or Washington.
It's scary how many have relocated here from COW. Even a few from the east coast. My favorite was the couple from West Chester NY, him in loafers without socks and she in a leopard skin jacket with matching boots at the local DMV. Never off their smart phones the entire time. So out of place it was laughable. But the valley being as a conservative as it is they were treated with respect, not what I would find if I were moving to a blue shit hole.

It was a merely ideological statement, since regulations vary widely by locale, but it expresses their willingness to have mouthy groups dictate corporate policy. I wrote about it in a couple of venues, and pretty much Got Told that it's their private property and my silly old constitution need not apply there, also they have great deals on potato pancake mix with coupons and all.

So I instituted a one-customer boycott, after they did not answer my letters, and vowed not to do business with them until they straightened their act out. I see that ten other customers have now joined my campaign.

I give them 15 years. I have worked with Kroger a lot as a supplier. There is one defining characteristic in all of my work with that company: competence. Hyper-competence, with laser-like focus on the bottom line but without missing the forest for the trees. That's a rare combination and it is probably the number one reason they're successful. I have worked as a supplier to many megacorps and Kroger and a couple of others are hands-down the most competent outfits I have ever worked with, by so wide a margin that there's essentially no contest.

If they're going woke, it means that other priorities and requirements are surfacing or will surface. That obsession with competence will erode. And the moment it does, they'll be in a downward spiral. They're gigantic and omnipresent, so they won't fail overnight and will hang on for a long time, but it will be for naught eventually.

When I was a younger man, I had a serious girlfriend I met at school. She was from the east coast. After college, I went home (CO) to look for work and she did the same. We agreed that one of us would move to the other, depending on who got a real job first. I got a real job first and she reneged. A big part of it was exactly this phenomenon. To her, *nothing* between California and the Mississippi was civilized.

Yeah - they did. You're spot on. Here's some philosophical bullshit - and I haven't even had a beer yet. I don't think we CAN stay out of unnecessary wars and keep a large military at the same time. I just don't think that's possible given human nature. If we've got it , we're gonna' want to use it - the same way I get the itch to get something out of my gun cabinet and put rounds downrange. And it's hardwired in the Right's DNA to keep a big military. Hence - foreign adventures are unavoidable.

The Styx/Silkworm class doesnt have a chance without active radar guidance or a completely new guidance package (I could replace the guidance package with a raspberryPi and improve it, so thats not impossible). I also think a Styx or any missile with the range to hit from a coastline would do more damage - even if the warhead failed.

@staceyabrams 14h
#SB202 suppresses voters, criminalizes compassion & seizes election authority from local + state officials. In 11 years, I never witnessed a massive bill approved at such speed and signed in such desperation. This wasn't efficiency or principle. This is cowardice. 1/2
Georgia Republicans want to hide their shameful actions from public scrutiny. It's Jim Crow in a suit + tie: cutting off access, adding restrictions, encouraging more "show me your papers" actions to challenge a citizen's right to vote. Facially neutral but racially targeted. 2/
GOP legislators gave themselves the right to takeover local elections & throw out results - what they tried and failed to do in MI. They raised costs for taxpayers and forbid counties from accepting funds to cover the bill. They criminalize free water & food for those in line. 3/
Republicans passed & signed #SB202 to signal their capitulation to lies over truth. To fear over fairness. To suppression over participation. But we will not be defeated by their worst actions & instincts. We will spread the word, we will sue & we will win.

Missed this 'til you trolled us, Fen

Five boxes isn't all that much for a whole family. Remember, there's no bread during Pesach, so Matzoh is used as a substitute in a wide variety of things. Sandwiches, pizza, snacks, the whole magilla. Growing up, our family of five went through a minimum of five boxes in the week, often eight. I go through between on and two boxes on my own each Passover. The five-pack is a conveniently sized package for supermarket shelves and will satisfy a family of three that loves the stuff or a family of five that likes it less for the entire holiday. I am not a big fan of it myself, but I do eat it outside of ceremony - usually at breakfast and/or lunch.

So a stump stopped your schtooping?

How did you explain how it happened when you told your parents?

441 "When is the last time anyone, even a conservative, has made an affirmative argument in favor of gun ownership based on the inherent virtue of gun ownership?"

I've long been a proponent of mandatory gun ownership. If you're a man between 18 and 50 years of age, you should be required to own a semiautomatic rifle with detachable magazine in 5.56 and 300 rounds of ammunition.

Require a shooting course in public high schools, covering gun safety, marksmanship, and first aid.

Check out Larry Correia, author of the gun-loving Monster Hunters book series and certified gun instructor. Pretty sure he's not conservative, not that it matters.

451 We've gone from once again being respected by the world to a global embarrassment overnight. America is being savaged in global reporting for Biden's incompetence, his pure political agenda and the media's obsequiousness. I've talked to people from Europe to Asia today, ever one of them is snickering. Pathetic.

I ran into something new when I was posting Abrams rant up thread. It just stopped letting me type on the last tweet. I copied and pasted all of the tweets but on the last one it just stopped in the middle of a word and I could not type it in manually. Haven't seen that before.

No. The character limit is a strict input control in the text box. The spam trap is a post-input filter that looks for spammish things. Things that will definitely trigger it are too many line breaks, repeating the same words or patterns too many times, certain words will always flag it, etc.
