Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Department of (In)Justice Admits That Maybe They Were Just Lying to Support The Next Democrat Propaganda Operation in Claiming There Was an Organized Armed "Insurrection"The DO(In)J now admits that maybe the dog ate their homework. ... But the Justice Department has since acknowledged in court hearings that some of its evidence concerning the riot -- carried out by a mob of supporters of former President Donald Trump to try to overturn his election loss -- is less damning than it initially indicated. The department suffered another blow this week when U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta threatened to impose a gag order on prosecutors after Michael Sherwin, its former head prosecutor on the Capitol cases, told CBS's "60 Minutes" program that evidence pointed toward sedition charges against some defendants. A charge of sedition -- meaning incitement of a rebellion -- has not been brought against any of the more than 400 people arrested to date. The most serious charges have been assault, conspiracy and obstruction of Congress or law enforcement. ... [M]issteps by the government could harm its credibility as accused ringleaders begin asking courts to drop some of the most serious charges. "They are trying to build the most horrendous cases they can because the public wants it -- and this is politicizing criminal justice," said Gerald B. Lefcourt, who for decades has represented high-profile defendants in political demonstrations, including Black Panther leaders and "Chicago Seven" trial figure Abbie Hoffman. The Justice Department declined to comment, saying it cannot discuss ongoing cases.Well, the lead attorney discussed it on 60 Minutes when he claimed he was about to start charging protesters with sedition. But he can't comment on something that damages his Democrat Propaganda Lies. Julie Kelly has been reporting on this thuggish, Third-World Banana Republic railroading of protesters and mere trespassers. They have claimed that helmets were "weapons" to charge someone with being in possession of a weapon. And to propagandize that the "insurrectionists" were armed. And Kelly notes that prosecutors are now routinely taking people's political belief that the election was rigged as a valid reason to keep them in jail before a trial: Further, Bruno’s refusal to accept that Joe Biden fairly won the presidency is more proof he should stay in jail, prosecutors say. "The offenses committed by the defendant illuminate characteristics inconsistent with a person who could follow orders given by this Court, or indeed, any branch of the federal government. The defendant has espoused disbelief in the outcome of the 2020 Presidential election, and violently acted on that world view." (The government, both judges and lawyers, routinely cite a defendant’s doubt about last year’s election as evidence of wrongdoing.)Is this America? Is there an opposition party or not? Or is there at least a branch of the Uniparty willing to pretend to be an opposition party? Has a single GOP office-holder, or a single paid commentator for Conservative, Inc., objected to this overcharging of Americans? Pushed back at all against this rampant denial of due process? Said a peep about a militarized police force holding protesters in jail without bail while convicted killers are set free? Even mentioned the rampant abuse of wiretapping to go on fishing expeditions to see which Trump voters can be charged with some contrived crime? Has a single elected official pointed out that it's unconstitutional to criminalize a political belief? No, not a one. They're all in on it. I can no longer support a corrupt, cowardly party that only pretends to oppose the fascist socialists. And now they're talking about putting Trump supporters who have committed no crime -- except to deny that the 2020 election was just and fair -- on a no-fly terrorist watch list! ++++ This is a good sentence, because it applies at multiple levels. Overcharging Americans judicially? They don't care. Overcharging Americans economically - and often literally? They don't care. Overcharging Americans politically? They don't care. If you strip back all the veneers and get to the core of the post-Nixon Conservative, Inc., you will find the true guiding principle - the "mission statement," if you will: "America and Americans pay all of it." "carried out by a mob of supporters of former President Donald Trump to try to overturn his election loss"
Outstanding example of the lies and distortion that are woven into almost *every* sentence of the "press", for years now, and especially the wires. Zero evidence of either asserted fact. I still await real journalism (Luke Rosiak, what are you working on these days?) to do a thorough look at the profile of each person charged with any serious crime. I doubt a single one will be found with *any* Trump-leanings, activities, or resume to speak of. The DOJ and many of the judges have denied bail, caused great suffering economically of relatively poor people, used vague and misleading intercepts of social media posts to make grandiose claims, and overcharging to a ridiculous nature in order to get guilty pleas to wave in front of the press. Sadly, it will take the bloody, public deaths of hundreds of Americans before the metaphoric trigger is pulled. And even then, I think the left will win. whig, I'm not sure about analogy to the USSR towards the end. I recognize almost all analogies are limited in their application, and that's fine.
Pretty familiar with the Soviet decline, over the decades prior. Actually sat with Murray Feshbach in his cluttered office at Commerce and discussed the demographic collapse he had identified (before/better than all the vast intel community) in the 80s. But the USSR was always - always, even at it's "high point" of true widespread joy/relief, May 1945 - a grim police state with nearly zero genuine grassroots devotion OR actual principles or history of institutions following any such principles. The US was quite different. In the USSR, a hollow and evil, deadening system finally disintegrated. In the US, a uniquely good and mostly successful system with built-in capacity for fixing itself and evolving is disintegrating. Posted by: rhomboid at March 25, 2021 02:49 PM (OTzUX) 212

211, We have been a hollow state since about 1990 with the elites in society increasingly hating on their erstwhile countrymen.
In our case, any real fiscal discipline disappeared since the 1990's and that artifact was largely possible because the Cold War ended the need to spend so much for defense. During the Bill Clinton regime, we stopped being a serious country because of hubris among our elites. What we are seeing now is the dying of the New Deal regime that was instituted during the time of FDR, likewise the Civil War was the death of the original republic over slavery, and GOP progressivism was the regime from the 1860's to the 1930's. Each took about 70-80 years or so. Roughly the same amount of time that the Sov. Union existed, the Mexican PRI regime lasted, and similar changes in the British political system. There is some utility in the idea of turnings in human society and they seem about 70-90 years in length. Posted by: whig at March 25, 2021 02:56 PM (pO7gM) 252

They can't necessarily be entirely divorced, but the New Deal and FDR put to bed the prior era and would have taken over if not for the War. The comment dagny made in the press conference thread really was quite important - she was replying to a comment about women voters "waking up". Her scathing but persuasive alternative view lacked only one thing - it actually applies to men as well. Look around you. Unless you are very lucky, very easy to find examples of what she talked about.
Even "intelligent" people, outside their narrow area of specialization, are too often pretty much idiots. Uninformed, misinformed, lacking any perspective or ethical framework other than what-affects-me-the-next-24-hours. And of course we're now nearly a full generation into a dumbed-down miseducated public, when it comes to civic matters. Anyone trying to do the right thing is running in deep, set sand. 269, Yes depending on generational length.
From the 1990's, we have also been converted more or less to an empire composing of several nations internally due to low birth demographics among existing citizens and replacement coming from immigration. Empires have an accelerated decline because homogeneity among the populace in a cohesive nation state can ride out shocks to the system better than heterogeneous populations that tend to splinter by identification. The components of the Empire are increasingly held together by coercive force which undermines the very support that an Empire needs to sustain itself--the usual resort of empires is to use war as a distractor but wars eventually lead to financial collapse and losses in the end anyway. We are in the coercive stages of the late empire where no elite really believes in the original core values anymore. Posted by: whig at March 25, 2021 03:06 PM (pO7gM) 294

My guess is that we either get a Franco or Pinochet, or a caudillo kleptocrat like Maduro, in our future because decadent divided countries usually require a single tyrant to rule. 307 Romeo13, we were founded as a Republic but arguably that died depending on whether you use internal or external policy as the dividing point. 1861-76 if you use internal criteria, 1898 if you use external criteria (Spanish American War). We became an incompetent empire more or less that sought to paper over the cracks via an increasing role for the national government over that of the states. Emphasizing the national government over states eventually led to foreign entanglements so you got things like Dollar Diplomacy in the Caribbean, and eventually US involvement permanently with alliance and client countries abroad.

What replaces the dollar as reserve currency? I don't think the yuan is stable enough, and I have my doubts about the euro. The pound?
Posted by: Catherine -- who generally doesn't curse. at March 25, 2021 03:13 PM (xjX7a) ++++ Possibly nothing, at least not formally. The USD became the formal reserve currency at Bretton Woods, but that is fairly unusual in history. International settlements and pricing currencies are often not a single currency, and sometimes not currency at all (sometimes it is a commodity). We may end up back to proxying everything through gold or oil or something similar. Or a moving goalpost like the Special Drawing Right (an IMF pseudocurrency backed by a large basket of currencies). A single, formal "reserve currency" may not appear at all once the current Post-War world order ends. But regardless of what replaces it, the lack of constant foreign demand for dollars for settlement and commodity pricing purposes puts an end to a lot of the game-playing and will expose a lot of the rottenness throughout the system. It will be painful. There are no non-painful options. The last few rounds of pre-'Rona profligacy ended the "grow out of it" possibility. Golden ages are rarely measured from the vantage point of the general populace. From a historical perspective we'd probably have ours as at earliest some time after the Civil War (in the 1870s we became the highest gdp country outside of india/china) and ending within a few decades of the fall of the USSR.
Our global preeminence will probably be typically marked as beginning with WWI or WWII. Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is Already Dead at March 25, 2021 03:19 PM (Zm+LZ) 372

Jim Eagle was the failed sequel to The Eagle Has Landed, which followed the attempt of Liam Devlin (Donald Sutherland) to escape from Molly (Jenny Agutter) after Molly comes up pregnant.
Roger Ebert quipped sarcastically: "With less bloodshed, plot and dramatic interest, the movie was nonetheless a success with a certain small group of viewers who enjoyed the director's choice of having Ms. Agutter's character, while topless, chase Mr. Sutherland's character across vast tracts of Scotland and Ireland for the entire 90 minute run time." My guess is that we either get a Franco or Pinochet, or a caudillo kleptocrat like Maduro, in our future because decadent divided countries usually require a single tyrant to rule.
The current oligarchy is unstable because they really do not have the support of the people in the US but are there because no one can think of someone better to run things. In essence, the elites are trying to hold on despite no one really believing in the American way anymore. 388 weft,
You are arguing Burnham's Managerial thesis. The major thing is that Burnham assumed competence in the managerial state. The Sov. Union kinda of put paid to that ideal over the long term. Managerial authority declines via screwups like Chernobyl plus special privileges and causes the moral authority declines of the admin state. Coercion is not a substitute in the long run because people develop coping mechanisms outside the ability of the managers to coerce them. At least theological states can call upon the hereafter to coerce, managerial states cannot. Irish democracy if you will. Posted by: whig at March 25, 2021 03:28 PM (pO7gM) 415
Biden explicitly invited foreigners to surge our border to seek asylum, and told them he'd make sure they got a hearing.
BTW, the vast majority of asylum seekers don't get asylum after their hearing, because they are not qualified. Of course, the foreigners know this, and they are coached by lefty activists on the "right" words they need to say, but most still don't meet the legal requirements, because they're coming here for economic reasons, not to escape political persecution or violence, which is what asylum is supposed to be reserved for. But the foreigners denied asylum simply ignore the orders to leave, and continue to live illegally in the U.S., at a cost of many billions of dollars to us. Romeo13, We ceased being a republic so much as when emergencies led presidents to get more and more power at the expense of the legislative branch. Essentially we had something more like an elected prince with terms of service which avoids the traditional selection and dotage problems when operating efficiently. Lincoln was probably the first real elected dictator due to the nature of the Civil War but he set the stage powerwise for the later moves by Wilson, FDR, and all post WWII presidents.
