More to the point, Rita, how many *men* want that job? Not many. There are relatively few men who can do that job, and of those few fewer still actually want to do it. There is a reason that roughnecks earn so much money. The job is unpleasant, extremely difficult and extremely dangerous. Most men would rather do something else, but can be convinced to do that thing if the sums of money involved are great enough.

Same thing with C-level executives. Not many men want those jobs, either, because most people don't want to work 100+ hours every week forever and the money is inadequate compensation after a certain point for most people.

Ability is only the start of the story.

There's value in knowing how to do the basic tasks, even if you can afford to pay someone else to do them. It builds confidence, and gives you options. Knowing how to cook means you aren't reliant on restaurants and stores. Knowing how to perform basic car and home maintenance means you aren't dependent on someone else who can charge you an arm and a leg.

But women normally couldn't hack it. Trying to get guys to do the work for them also didn't work as it made everyone else's job harder. This lasted until one chick got a few wrapped around her finger and she stayed on but didn't do jack. Unloading one trailer she tipped a row of boxes over and broke my hand. That was my last week at UPS because I had just graduated and was going to start at Boeing the following week. Still pisses me off.

Yup. I did all of my own car maintenance for a long time because I was broke and it is far cheaper to do it yourself if you can. One day in July I had hauled out my jack, stands, pan and everything else to do an oil change. I saw the heat radiating up off of the ground and thought to myself, "I'm not broke anymore. Fuck this. I'm paying someone else to do it."

I rarely work on my car now. I don't miss it. I know how to do oil and plugs and brakes and tune-ups, but I just really don't want to. But if I need to, I can.

The belt was the easiest. But the deal was guys unloading tried to kill me to get back at me when I was unloading and they were sorting. But I was the best at all of it. So they couldn't hurt me, just made me walk a few paces down the belt and I was fine. But they backed up the loaders so the boss would make them leave unloading so they could load for a while. It was kind of a sport. All you needed for sorting was a good memory for zips and the ability to juggle.

China is unlikely to escalate to that level. The amount they'd need to throw at us to hit anything would invite a retaliatory strike that would destroy their country.

The power struggle with China is over at this point though. If we were to ever have a war with China to maintain superpower status it should've been sooner rather than later. It is now later. Not completely later in the sense that we're guaranteed a loss at this very moment in time, but that we aren't in a position to resist nor will we be in the coming few decades.

Fen, this is a canard. Air impact wrenches cannot tighten fasteners any tighter than a human can do with a socket on a long breaker bar. And if the tire shop is doing their job right, they use a torque wrench to ensure that each lug nut is tightened to the manufacturer's specified value.

Wheel nuts are hard to remove for three reasons: One, you want them tight. Wheels falling off is bad juju. Two: rust and corrosion set in, and the torque required to remove the nuts becomes much greater than that used to seat them. Three: the wheel wrenches normally supplied with the vehicle are barely adequate to do the job under ideal conditions.

Buy a 24" flex handle, and an impact socket sized to fit the wheel nuts on each vehicle you own. Keep it under the driver's seat. Makes tire change a piece of cake, and also serves as an effective club.

I didn't watch the whole thing, but from the clips I saw it appears that Biden has a lot of trouble maintaining his train of thought. He seems to forget what he was trying to say when he's speaking, and then he starts to ramble to try and cover for the fact that he has forgotten (mid-sentence) what he was trying to say.

The only Great film directed by a woman that I can think of is Triumph of the Will. Probably Olympia as well, but I've never seen that one in its entirety.

We also know that China's military has performed poorly in the recent border clashes with India and when they invaded Vietnam in the late seventies.

Thus, unless you are a defense analyst with access to classified intelligence, pointless speculation rests with whether Taiwan or China would 'win' such a war. China would most prefer a peaceable surrender but we do not know that will happen either nor do we know the reactions of other Asian nations in response. China through its own efforts has basically pissed off every surrounding nation to the extent that traditional enemies now cooperate under the table. What would happen in such an event, no one really knows.

3-5 nuclear weapons does not sound like much, but are probably very easy for any country with fissionables and working reactors to make in short order. That number of nukes could easily destroy a major part of China's economy if deployed.

My personal guess if China plans to take Taiwan, it would be through a shock and awe massive missile attack perhaps augmented by aircraft designed to destroy the Taiwanese military bases and assets. Then China would threaten Taiwanese civilians with massive deaths unless Taiwan capitulates immediately. Same strategy as Hitler used against Great Britain--Hitler, nor the German Navy really wanted anything to do with actually amphibious invasions. Sea Lion was mainly more useful as a threat than an actuality.

500 CRT, the question is what does China gain from launching an assault versus the risks. That is where it becomes opaque to outsiders. Effectively taking Taiwan by military force will make China an immediate adversary of surrounding nations. It will definitely make it very difficult for MNC's to continue doing business with China plus the ancillary decay of trade, etc.

China has also now passed its demographic peak and estimates of TFR of 1.4 to even 1.0 are being bandied about which will cause a historic depopulation of China versus its neighbors.

So, the answer is what can China gain from actually taking Taiwan. To some extent it would be technology but that would be a short term gain. It won't gain much in any resources other than perhaps fishing. It would gain a military base in the ocean to push out its defensive perimeter (shades of Japanese strategy in WWII) but at a Pyrrhic cost most probably to its economy.
However, as a uniting patriotic theme, insisting that Taiwan is part of China works to distract Chinese from increasing problems on the ground, it also works in keeping the West and other Asian countries guessing about strategy while building its military.

505 The US isn't competitive with China, in realistic terms. Shit, Zimbabwe could probably pose a realistic threat to us, if they wanted. This is a zombie Republic shambling along in no particular direction, and as an imperial power, nobody takes us seriously, and they're right not to.

But I think China will have some bad problems dealing with all those real countries who surround them, hate them, and aren't weak, unserious laughingstocks.

Their retirement bennies are being increased as they reduce the size of their force. They are reducing the size of their force because they are focused on motorizing it and building a better combined arms doctrine. The military produces global power and deterrence.

Those things do not just magically happen.

It is always difficult to predict exactly what a single decisionmaker will do, worse if it is a committee. Xi could simply want Taiwan as a marker of his regime's success and it appears that he has become a virtual emperor instead of rule by committee. That also has its downside, a failure would probably have Xi dead in a ditch. The Chinese military has not been in a prolonged conflict since Vietnam so it is unclear how it would perform in action. The US had numbers in WWII, but still performed rather poorly in North Africa and only somewhat better in Sicily. China has no blue water experience as a Navy and often very well equipped navies, like Germany or Russia, that lacked the experience of open water conflicts do poorly as well. Japan and Britain did well because their islands and people depended on shipping and trade. Germany and Russia (and China for that matter) are traditional land powers, not sea, and thus lack the incentive and motivation that land forces possess in those countries.
5 G war is even more difficult to project as it includes the economy, scientific advancement, finances, effects on world public opinion, etc. as up for grabs in a conflict.

516 In my youth I did some very rough jobs, digging ditches, manning a paint mask washing station, unloading Bumpers for a bumper line and running a paint anodizing line.
I unloaded and loaded trucks with everything from rigid conduit to frozen hams.

I never worked along side a woman doing the same job, because they wouldn't and couldn't.
