On March 21, 2021, at about 10:56 p.m., officers with the Eureka Police Department responded to a gas station at the 1700 block of 4th Street for the report of a robbery. The employee stated that a male, later identified as 21-year-old Jack Bullwinkel of Arcata, entered the store simulating a firearm under his shirt and demanded money. Bullwinkel fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. While the employee was attempting to phone police, Bullwinkel returned and struggled with the employee in an attempt to keep him from phoning. During the struggle, a male associated with Bullwinkel arrived on scene and assaulted the employee. The associated male was later identified as 39-year-old Bradley Mallet of Eureka. Bullwinkel then fled the scene on foot for the second time.Moar crime........Hiker gets the better of biker.
While responding to the scene, an EPD officer witnessed Bullwinkel running to the rear of the 1600 block of 4th Street. After a brief foot pursuit, the officer attempted to physically detain him. Bullwinkel resisted and the officer fell to the ground. According to witnesses, Bullwinkel was seen standing over the officer and was repeatedly punching him on the head and putting pressure to the neck area. A male witness ran over and made multiple attempts to get Bullwinkel off of the officer. Additional officers arrived on scene and ultimately got Bullwinkel restrained and in custody.
The incident took place on a mixed-use trail and resulted in one arrest. Dake Traphagen, 69, is in custody, charged with first-degree assault and possession of a dangerous weapon, after turning himself in to authorities yesterday. Police say there was probable cause to arrest Traphagen after a stabbing incident on the mixed-use Stewart Mountain Trail near Bellingham, Wash., on March 6. According to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, Traphagen was part of a group hiking down the trail when they encountered a mountain biker, later identified as a 66-year-old male, traveling uphill. Witnesses told police that an argument ensued over “right of way.” Accounts diverge regarding what happened next. Traphagen told authorities the biker attacked him with his bike, causing the two to fall to the ground. At that point, Traphagen said he pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed the biker in self-defense.

There were a couple of my father's relatives who were priests. From what I was told a number of years ago, their pay is based on how many years they've been a priest, not on the job title. As it was explained to me, a bishop or archbishop makes the same as a priest of the same number of years. If a cardinal has to spend time in Rome, there may some compensation for that.
Also, I was always told that the Church gets away with not paying priests as much as many other professions because they don't have families to support. And if they live in a parish rectory they don't have the same bills to pay as most people.

Pour from full 5 gal into 3 gal. you now have 2 gal in 5 gal container (5-3=2). Dump out 3 gal cont. put the 2 gal into 3 gal container. 3 gal cont. with only 2 gal in it can only take 1 more gal (3-2=1) So take 5 gal container, fill it up all the way and then start pouring into the other container when it's full you have 4 gal in the larger container. (5-1=4)

I think there's one other solution above.
One or two don't get that you can't measure and pour out any guessed amount. You have to use the full capacity of the jugs to calculate what you've done.

There's another solution, and that's
Fill 3-gal jug and pour into 5 gal.
Fill 3 gal jug and fill 5 gal jug with it. 6 - 5 = 1 gallon remaining in 3 gal jug.
Empty 5 gal jug, and pour 1 gallon into it.
Pour 3 more gallons into 5 gallon. 3 + 1 = 4 gallons now in 5 gallon container.

Another one, more difficult. There are 5 bags of coins, 4 of which are real, while one contains counterfeit coins. The difference between them is the fake coins weigh 1 ounce less than the real coins.
In the room is a penny scale. You have one penny. Determine which bag contains the fake coins by taking only one weight with your penny.

You could also use the scale to weigh the full three gallon and divide that weight by three. Put the three into the five and fill the three by the solution to the division. But that assumes the bomb wouldn't be triggered by there being three on the scale.

Not really an Osteen fan because he doesn't really stand up for the Bible when he's confronted with a hard question from the media, probably (my charitable interpretation) because he doesn't want to turn anyone off. That said, when I've been down I have found his positive message to be downright inspirational to me. I bet his messages have helped a lot of people as well.
I'd never attend his church, however.

I do agree with you on this, which is why I'd never join Osteen's church. That said, I do believe that God explicitly says that if you follow His ways, you will prosper, and if you don't you won't. The OT is quite clear on that, I think. Job is certainly in there because life is more complicated than that, and Ecclesiastes amplifies the point about what a life without God is like. Now, Jesus did die for the sins of the world. I struggle with what that really means - is that *all* sins - in light of your comment. I don't know the answer. In short, I think that there is a nugget of truth in Osteen.

Yeah. This is true. A lot are farmed trees and they're cut when they're only 18" or so around or less.
But with laminates and glue tech getting very very good along with foam outside panels things aren's so bad. Just not crafty.
plus there's few people able to work with that quality of wood.

Ladyl, Wayneville is the antiques capitol of Ohio. And don't they just know it! Still probably better prices than those tourist traps Springfield has set up along I-70. And you can eat a the nice Village Restaurant after working up an appetite shopping for stuff. And if you like sauerkraut they are host to the Sauerkraut Festival every October (except for last year of course).

Been happening for decades. In the mid-60's, Dad and Uncle Bob (Mom's close sister's husband) bought an old small tugboat and used it to pull logs off the beaches of Puget Sound and sold them to local mills.
I was about 9 or 10, but as the oldest kid, got to go with Dad. It was really cool for a kid to watch. And spending the day on Puget Sound, well, there are a lot of less cool things to do.
They pulled off a lot of logs in the couple of years they did it, but others started doing similar and the supply of good logs laying on a beach pretty much dried up.
I don't think that Dad and Uncle Bob made a lot of money at it, but they seemed to always drink one hell of a lot of beer all day, and the Moms were never around on the tug.

This is absolutely true. One of the places where I struggle, however, is the fact that Christians have a commission to spread the gospel, and help change the fallen world. We certainly do that by spreading the Word, but we also do that by good works, and lots of those works involve money. The Good Samaritan did a great thing, but he also had money with which to do it. I'm not a Prosperity Gospel guy, but I think there is a truth there that shouldn't be thrown out wholesale. Just not sure which part, however.

All that helicopter money is going to set off an inflationary fire, as I've been rambling about. The signs are all getting aligned for. And, again, the Fed is not going to be able to stop it without destroying the federal govt. When you're $28T in debt, 20% interest rates will kill you.
I was reading how a lot of the latest $1400 checks are being blown in Vegas. That money has already bidded up prices there to pre-lockdown levels.

My wife and her sister are the end of the line for her family. Cousins are pretty distant. There are real heirlooms in her family that we will probably pass on to my children from my first marriage and to her cousins, but we really need to think about the "story" that goes with each of them. In some cases, where there really isn't a story, the right thing to do is to sell them.

Oh, yeah, now you mention it, I remember about 25 or more years ago, there was a small ring of guys that were busted for finding actual old growth fir at the bottom of Lake Washington, in hundreds of feet deep water, cutting them, bringing them to the surface, and selling them.
Trees as big as any old growth on land. And in fantastic condition, due to the deep cold fresh water.
But that was just out and out theft, not salvage.

They've been doing this for 12 years to save the system from the Crash of '08. The monetary base, M0, (the actual dollars in the system) was about $800B before '08. It's now over $5T. That is, they've increased the base money by 6x in 12 years.
But it didn't do anything yet, except keep the markets propped up. Once it gets to circulating (velocity), then it starts the inflationary fire.
They can't roll this back without destroying the system. They know this.

I don't have a huge amount on hand, but usually when I do a project I buy a few extra whatevers just to have some on hand for future small jobs (plywood, studs, cedar fence boards, PVC pipe, etc.).
When the snow melts a bit I'll go look to see what I have out there. Maybe I'll Craigslist it if there's enough profit to make it worth my while.

This is what bothers me. In the Soviet Union, by about 1985, all the kids who were idealistic and stupid in their youth had grown up and didn't believe anything the gov't said, and the youngest adults were split into 3: true believers, true disbelievers, and people who just wanted to get by.
The result was a polity that neither trusted any institution, nor saw any particular way forward. You could smell the despair off people who came from that system. THAT is where we are headed.

not a good analogy - they just had to return to the newly ascendant international financial system as junior partners of the now powerful US, and this system had large amounts of capital available to put into their rebuilding.
When we go down, the entire worlds financial and economic system goes down with us. The only analogy I can think of is 6th century Rome. The kind of thing that will take a century, or 10, to come back from.

Last fall, talking with a buddy in the timber industry. He said that all of the Free Covid Money has many of those who would normally be working in mills are just sitting home and cashing checks.
Not a problem a year and a half ago. But then, with zero interest rates, everyone and their dog wants to suddenly build a new house or remodel their existing home. Existing inventory disappers, and not enough people working to cut the trees or mill the lumber.
Demand for lumber skyrockets, and no workers to hire for the mills to meet demand.
Pretty much a case study for an introductory college Economics class.

Now, that's not all the money that was created during 2020. Treasury borrowed a shit ton. Issued more Ts, which the Fed monetized, and Treasury amassed at the peak $1.7T in "cash" in it's Fed account.
Now, the way M0 works, money in Uncle's "checking account" doesn't count towards M0. It's not in the banking system. It's just parked.
Guess what, with the stimulus they are now dumping that pile. In one day the other week, March 16th or something, they dumped $270B into the system. Nearly $300B in new money in one fucking day.
M0 is going to go up another trillion or so in a very short time.
I was reading, that 270B in one day did cause shocks (key interbank rates went negative) -- the news media doesn't even mention this stuff.
An inflationary fire the likes of which we're never seen is about to be ignited.

Oh it crashed -- you can go to FRED and have it calculate some graphs for you (they don't have a velocity series, but you can calculate it from what they have. Play with FRED -- it's very powerful).
Basically all this money did get into consumer/main street hands. It just propped up the stock markets and kept the debt bubble from collapsing, which it was going to do (and cause a deflationary depression).
But now, now, conditions are such that money is going to start circulating.

This the thing. They can't do it. They can't unwind that. If they start dumping all those assets on the market, they will crash the price (meaning T rates go up and everything else along with). If they get the "bond vigilantes" going with that, they'll lose control of the yield curve, which will start skyrocketing, and *destroy their own balance sheet*. IOW, their assets, which they've created the money against, are now worth less than all the money in the system. This is bad.
And not to mention that skyrocketing rates will destroy the federal govt. When you're $28T in debt, and much of it short term where you have to roll trillion and trillions per year, if interest rates hit 20% like in the '70s, you are fucked.

Yes. This right here is the positive inflationary feedback loop that makes inflation so hard and painful to stop once it gets going. When people begin to notice inflation, they begin to change their behavior in response. This behavior itself cause velocity to increase, more spending.
Basically you spend, spend, spend to get before the price increases.
Once this mindset has kicked in, it gets very hard to turn the expectations around.

Recessions are shallow Depressions.
Keeping the cash flowing does help to keep things from crashing BUT you have debt.
I'm of the opinion that the number that gets tossed out as being the National Debt is either a misnomer or a deliberate misleading statement.
It is an artifact of how books are balanced. Assets in, debts out.
Trouble is that that's not how governments work. Their accounting is different because their assets are the country and all it's production and potential production. So yes we've put out bonds that when they are cashed will be paid for and that counts as a debt but they aren't cashed that often they're rolled over and they take time to accrue. Years in some cases.
Other wise the government would grind to a halt because of no cash. It's game of hot potato. This is like a pyramid scheme and so long as no one breaks a leg the dance goes on. All it takes is one or two countries to go belly up and the whole world will come to a halt. But the bankers will stop that from happening.

Even 10 years ago, it sure looked like even a return to somewhat nominal rates of 3 to 6 percent would completely nuke government balance sheets. Every bit of tax revenue would be required just to make interest payments. No money whatsoever for anything else, for military, social security, government spending on anything. Game over. The entire 28 trillion of debt has to roll over about every four years. Once they can't service the interest, katy bar the door.

I think the fear is that interest on the debt rises as interest rates rise, to the point where debt service starts to crowd out other government expenditures. Interest rates are based on expectations of inflation, so as inflationary expectations go up, interest rates go up. There's a balancing act between inflating your outstanding debt and servicing it. The only real way to square the circle is austerity.

Yes, when market forces are allowed to work. But when you central banks that create money out of thin air to intervene and start buying that debt to keep the price up and the rates down. Those forces can be thwarted (until you destroy the system).
And that's what they're going to do. The market has been trying to push up Euro govt debt rates, and the ECB has bought to keep the yields down. Yield curve control would be the term for that.
The Fed will do that itself if it has to to keep T rates from rising too much. And they will pretend that nothing bad is happening (Inflation? What inflation. There is no inflation).

I recall one of the big reforms on the table for Chile was embracing strict private property rights that would encourage people to actually invest in building industry there. I don't know that they were ever quite on board with it as foreign investors hoped though.
A lot of South America's woes are directly tied to the leftards there wanting to keep nationalization at any time as an option to inject some quick cash into their corrupt governments.

Well they were simply honest tareorists and made adjustments for the weight of the jugs. They had adjusted the empty weights of both jugs to be equal, and the safing trigger was set for 4 gals of water plus equal empty weight.
Or the safe trigger was set to accept a range equal to the difference in empty weight of the jugs.

Lots of the big scientific instruments need to be very cold to work. NMRs (MRIs is the medical tool equivalent) is one of the most common ones.
You get better precision the colder your sensors are. Less noise.

I give them six months before police are required to go in first while social workers remain off site while secure the scene and set a date for the criminals to meet a judge so that he can arrange a mandatory meeting with mental health workers. Maybe also some type of confinement so that the criminal isn't a threat to others.

I haven't put anything past them since they staged the attack on the draw mohammed cartoon event in 2015 in Grapevine Texas. obama, et. al. was using DHS to run guns to Mexico and blame it on gun dealers in an effort to get new gun control laws, I have no doubt the same crowd is trying everything they can do to get an assault weapon ban rushed in.

I still have 8 to 12 inches of snow in places on the north facing slopes. I've been trying to plant some Doug fir and Tamarack seedlings since Saturday. Every time I get ready it has started snowing heavily. Gave up yesterday and planted about 50 of them with the snow coming down.
