The Saturday Night Joke

A man with no enemies

Toward the end of the Sunday service the minister asked, "How many of you have forgiven your enemies?"

80% held up their hands.

The minister then repeated his question. All responded this time, except one man, Walter Barnes.

The minister said, "Walter, are you not willing to forgive your enemies?"

"I don't have any," he replied gruffly.

"That is very unusual. How old are you?"

"Ninety-eight," he replied. The congregation stood up and clapped their hands.

"Oh, Walter, would you please come down in front and tell us all how a person can live ninety-eight years and not have an enemy in the world?"

Walter tottered down the aisle, stopped in front of the pulpit, turned around, faced the congregation, and said, "I outlived all them assholes."

Then he calmly returned to his seat.

There are too many people moving to our area. If you want to move use this website for cities who want you.

Over the past several years, a handful of states and smaller cities have tried to get members of the remote workforce to give up their big-city lives (and rents) to move to their town—luring them in with everything from cash, to land, to bicycles. While those offers may have been tempting before, a lot of office-based workers didn’t have the option of relocating to a new city and keeping their job.

But now, more than a year into companies realizing that their employees aren’t children who won’t get anything done unless the boss is in the room, the idea of packing up and starting over in Tulsa, Northwest Arkansas, or Vermont isn’t just appealing—for more people than ever, it’s a possibility. And now, shopping for a new hometown that’s vying for your residency has gotten easier, courtesy of a new website that puts all the information you need in one spot

Another regular contributor is Isophorone Blog. The following story is very interesting. And as a fellow who messes around with canvas and brush I am in awe. The Art Forger Who Became a National Hero

In July of 1945, Han van Meegeren picked up his badger-hair brush and began to paint his last forgery.

Over a decade, the wiry Dutchman had surreptitiously become Europe’s premier conman -- a disgruntled artist-turned-forger who’d sold his works for tens of millions of dollars. Fueled by rejection from the art world, he had duped leading critics, wealthy collectors, and even a high-ranking Nazi official into believing his works were real. What’s more, he had chosen to do so by emulating the works of Jan Vermeer, a technically-immaculate master of the Dutch Golden Age.

But post-World War II, a “Vermeer” painting sold to Nazi Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring was traced back to van Meegeren -- a painting of such high quality that experts agreed no one could have possibly fabricated it. Accused of plundering for the Germans, the artist was sentenced to death. In an odd twist, van Meegeren was given one last chance to prove his innocence: If he could produce a brilliant forgery before the eyes of court-appointed witnesses, he'd be spared. What ensued would make the man one of the most popular figures in the Netherlands.

This is the story of Han Van Meegeren, the most dramatic forger of the 20th century.

It's bad enough his girlfriend broke up with him. Now he has to bail you out. Now that is a Genius Award Winner.

KEARNS — Criminal charges were filed Thursday against a Murray man who police say was involved in a drive-by shooting targeting his friend's ex-girlfriend.

Bradon Alex Quilter Watson, 20, is charged in 3rd District Court with possession of an explosive device, obstruction of justice, and shooting resulting in injury, all second-degree felonies; three counts of illegal shooting, a third-degree felony; plus criminal mischief and trespassing, class B misdemeanors.

On March 16, Unified police officers at the Kearns precinct heard gunshots and squealing tires about 1:40 a.m. They quickly found a house near 5600 South and 4200 West that had a bullet hole in the front window and four shell casings on the ground outside, according to charging documents.

A vehicle was also in the driveway with its tires slashed and part of a blade sticking out of one of them.

Texas, away from the (d) hellholes of D/FW, Austin, San Antonio & Houston, is quite the place. And even the (d) hellholes have significant Conservative weight in their electorate. "When the Saxon Began to Hate" is a poem that the Texas lefties should keep in mind in their excesses. Sure, normal Texans are smiling among the Texas Wildflowers. How can we not? Count our blessings, today was beautiful.

99 Oh goody, people are ragging on Amazon. Now I can share my story!

Tried to order some 3/4" to 1/8" audio plugs. Amazon has a good one in a two-pack for $8.99. Ordered it a few days ago.

First shipment yesterday: got an empty packet. Immediately put in for a Kohl's return. Amazon said they'd replace today.

Today's shipment: got ONE when I was promised two. Threw a tantrum. Tried to exchange again and was told online I could only return, and yes I have to return the one plug. Got even madder, then put in for the return.

Then I canceled the return and called Amazon customer service. Indian-sounding guy said keep the plug you got, we'll just send you a refund and do you want it on Amazon credit or your card? I said card. Meanwhile I ordered the same thing again, at eBay.

Grrrr! Jeffy is really letting his place go.

100 Back in me old bar-worker days, I recall the biggest 'tells' on the underage:

Immediately go to restroom and have of-age buddy order drinks in their absence.

Head to the farthest corner, away from the bar/ out of sight of bartender.

Order either nothing -or- Long Island Iced Tea.

Say they "don't have ID" on them.

104 So,an update from earlier today. Little Jenny is confined to a kennel for 10 days because she bit a volunteer. When I got there I went back to her kennel and there's a sign on the door. She can only be let out once during a shift, only on a leash, and no we can't interact with her except for her potty breaks. I was livid. She's a tiny little 10 pound dachshund. What.. she nipped someones hand and they had a fucking heart attack over it? Screw it.. I spent time with her in the yard (she hated the leash) and yeah I spent time with her in the kennel. I think most volunteers are gonna do the same thing. This sucks.

How about a picture of a pretty girl? This is Colleen Moore, a star of the 1920s and author of a wonderful memoir, Silent Star. Later in life, she became an investor and ended up immensely wealthy. She wrote a book for women who wanted to invest in the market, and was also famous for an intricate dollhouse which she worked on for many years.

While Van Meegeren has an amazing story as a forger, I'm thinking he's not even close to creating a forgery that changed the course of history.

Interestingly enough, I recently learned that Cage's composition had a further dimension than simply silence. While the work was composed in an anechoic chamber, it was first performed in a concert hall in Woodstock NY. During that first performance, the audience heard birds singing, the winds blowing, even the noises from the seated attendees. It was never really silent, which was the point of the piece.

Methinks the real "man" in the family is already his bride, which means he's marrying his mom. Too bad for everyone involved.

Agreed. The person who explained that to me was a summer intern last year at our company; he was a chemistry major but a music minor in college (?!). I said to him that I have very little interest in art that doesn't register beauty with me at a visceral level. Because of that I had a hard time with abstract art, and an even harder time with abstract music. On an intellectual level I can grok what Cage was getting at, but to me that's not a musical experience, but an experiment; the opposite of art.

Okay, the Fed has now moved from reserve requirement to an "ample reserves regime". If you're interested in the details of that, you can look it up.

Here's the short version. They printed so much fucking money, created so much M0, which has to be parked as reserves in banks, that it has just royally screwed up the normal regime of things.

This ample reserves stuff is just some new thing they've come up with to deal with the batshit crazy conditions they've created.

How the banking system works is sort of complex -- far too much to go into here, and if I tried, I'd screw things up.

But you've got to appreciate "what money is". In a fractional reserve system, banks create money themselves. But this not base money, currency, (a large component of which now is also digital, not physical). It's "checking account money".

To illustrate this, I'll contrive a very simple example, which I'll break up into another post 'cause Pixy.

Suppose Mr. Gotrocks has $100 in cash. He goes to a new bank that just opened, no money, no accounts (this would never be the real case, this is a simple example).

Now, he puts his physical cash money in the bank. It goes in the vault. The bank credits him with $100 in his checking account. There is now $100 of "deposit money" backed by $100 of reserves (real currency).

Now, the bank makes a loan to Mr. Hopeful, a $50 loan. They create an account for him, with $50 of deposit money in it.

There is now $150 total of deposit money, backed by only $100 of real money.

Now, you see how the bank created money in a manner of speaking. But this is not real money, this is deposit money. The notion of M1 captures this. M0 is the real money.

The reserve ratio requirement put a cap on how much deposit money can be created out of a given amount of reserves, real money. When it's zero, the banks could theoretically create an infinite amount of deposit money.

Best explanation I've seen is that because of many centuries of adaptation, many northern Europeans (and it goes without sayin, Scotsmen) have developed an ability for their livers to rapidly pump out enzymes which very quickly neutralize alcohol and other sedatives, converting them to sugars or other byproducts. As many of us know, this propensity can also be brought out by many nights of training your liver to do exactly that.

349 > Us kids living at or near Pearl Harbor knew the drills were useless in the early 80s.

Those of us in Alaska knew that the first sign of it being not-a-drill would be Anchorage suddenly not existing any more.

Lots of nervous laughter in the theatre when Elmendorf AFB got nuked (or so they thought) in the movie WarGames, back in the '80s. Everyone in the audience knew.

350 One more illustrative thing. The balance sheet. We have asset side and the liability side. The difference is "equity", but we won't worry about that. After Mr. Gotrocks put his $100 in, here's what the bank's balance sheet looks like:

Asset: $100 reserves Liability: $100 deposit

Note that deposits are a liability to a bank. Something they owe.

Now, when it makes the loan, it considers that an asset. So after the loan, it's balance sheet looks like this:

Assets: $100 reserves, $50 Loan; Liability $150 deposits.

You see how that works? The balance sheet still balances, and there is still just $100 of real cash in the system.

the big bucks guys were able to leverage up to 300:1 in LTCM, but I am not quite clear on your example. The little borrower is not given cash, he has his loan backed by whatever he is buying. For a house (for example), the bank puts the money up, but holds the lien. ... The high leverage the Big Players get is by other means, methinks .. but me is not so certain on the details ...

But yes, banks "create money" out of nothing ... Freddie and Fannie were leveraged 25:1, Franklin Raines testified they were save even at 50:1 ... while he (and Jamie Gorelick) collected huge bonuses on the scam, and We the People then bailed out the (not really) 2Big2Fail/Jail criminals.

Good explanation as far as it goes, but there hasn't been any "real money" in going on a hundred years. It's all bookkeeping entries (or now, ones and zeros sitting on a hard drive).

Money is worth whatever the powers that be decide that it's worth, and its value will be manipulated by them at will, always to their benefit.

392 In the USSR the term for civil defense was directly translatable, same as English: grazhdanskaya oborona.
The slightly jaded and cynical Soviet populace made the portmanteau "grob" out of this (pronounced like "grope").

"Grob" = coffin

Part of the not entirely unjustified brouhaha about Soviet strategic nuclear strategery and capabilities in the 80s was their nominally extensive investment in civil defense ("grob"). Especially their urban evacuation plans. Which included large % of the population *walking* out of town (not a whole lot of transportation capacity in the USSR, and few cars).

It was pointed out that on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, with zero govt. involvement, the greatest person/mile event on Earth occurred in the US. By a large margin. It was further pointed out that Soviet urban evacuation materially dependent on people walking might be interesting in ..... winter. The "urban evacuation gap" ceased being a persuasive point.

393 >> The little borrower is not given cash, he has his loan backed by whatever he is buying.

That simple example is to show how deposit money is created, and how it can exceed the total of real base money in the system.

In reality, the borrower would have (on paper at least) have to have some sort of collateral, something worth $50 that he could put up. The bank creates $50 dollars of deposit money for his loan, and has the loan, backed by the collateral, on it's asset side against the $50.

The Fed creates base money, "dollars", and the brunt of it is indeed digital, ones and zeros in their computers (which hold reserve accounts for the banks). But there is physical cash, close to $2T now circulating.

One small exception. FRNs, federal reserve notes, paper money, and their digital equivalent is what the Fed creates and destroys. Coins, pennies, quarters, dimes, etc are direct Treasury currency. The Fed doesn't control the creation of that. That total is a small amount relative to the total monetary base, but coin is very different than FRNs.

OK ... in the BigPlayer game, they not only fabricate $50 against the asset, they can "rehypothecate" multiple times against the same asset. iirc, they changed rules, but that still happens for some odd reason, only out of the Bank of England. ... that is why there is still "infinite" leverage. ... but I lost track of how they count M1, M2, M3 ... or your term, new to me .. M0 ... it is why they (banksters?) have nearly infinite assets to destroy U.S. ... outcome uncertain, but forecast is bleak.

M0 = base money, monetary base. This is the sum of FRNs, digi-FRNs, and coin the system. M1 is defined as the part of M0 outside the banks in circulation, plus all the deposit money. It will always be greater than M0.

M0 is "real money", high powered money. It is no more real than anything else, really, because it's just paper and digits created by the Fed.

Fed creates base money, banks create deposit money.

Their original business was as experts in correcting yeast problems in commercial distilleries and developing cures to fix the issues so entire batches didn't have to be thrown out. We toured their facility when they were on year 2 of aging their first 5 year bourbon and got on the list to buy bottles when the 5 years had passed. I got the email 2 years ago and drove down and bought 2 numbered bottles of the first batch. An extremely smooth bourbon with a good flavor. They have done well. They bought an old farm and are constantly adding racks. Well worth the stop!

422 ERF - very cool. Several of the craft brewers around here (San Diego County, which has for some reason, and by far, the greatest number of craft breweries) have ventured into distilling. I have yet to try their wares.

Only one of any size, that might have distribution, is Cutwater, founded by a few of the guys who started Ballast Point, I think.

Almost finished a bottle of corn whiskey from .... Reno. Craft brewery called The Depot (in the old train station). It's nice - and the bottle has the bizarre marking that it's made with "100% Nevada corn" - who knew NV had any corn?

Yep, that's my situation. Had a 4 level laminectomy, L2-S1, in 2014, w/ a herniectomy. Now need a triple level spinal fusion, L2-L5. Wish you and Teresa's hubby the best of luck.

Damn genetics. You do what you have to do to fix things. At least it's possible today.

426 But actually, about the NV corn thing, on the trip where we bought the whisky in Reno, on our return we drove south in NV instead of via 395 in CA. Done in order to pass through Hawthorne to see their ordnance museum (yuuuge WWII ordnance depot,) this route took us through some beautiful valleys with huge and most likely very fertile farmland, some of which was planted at the time. So I imagine that's where the corn comes from. Water is the only issue. Plenty of fertile bottomland in the desert.

430 Barnacle Bill? Oh, my... memories of being the Tudy Tarbender at a certain club in the 80s!

My (tip jar's) mascot was an unemployed stuffed reindeer named Blitzen. He signed a couple of charge-books during Boot Chief Training, LOL!

432 if Nevada has lower corn yields, they might get a better return by using it to make whiskey instead of ethanol or to feed cattle. IF they are producer of corn and also producing the whiskey (farm to table).

... Kinda like producing wine grapes ... much better return if one is the wine producer, not just the grower. ... but I have no idea about Nevada corn growers ... Quick search only shows corn for silage ... corn for whiskey must be a niche market thingy, idk.

So, I sewed little velcro patches to its paws so it could stay up, 'hugging' the tip jar.

Goofy thing, but the tip jar always filled. Cute little gimmick.

Iirc, and drinking is involved, 3rd degree burns refers to how extensive the burn area is, not the depth of damage of the tissue thereof.

I've taken CPR certs and advanced emergency response certs, and I don't recall any training on burns specifically.

There is a metric fuckton of "snowbirds" who come from northern climes to southern and central Arizona for the winter. Many from Canada, but many more from Snowbelt States like Minnesota, NoDak, Montana, Idaho, and Washington. I am one of those.

I have been lucky to make friends among local Zonies, as well as with folks from Minnesota, NoDak, and Washington. I bought a run-down old trailer with add-ons in 2014, and have been engaged in rehabbing it. And taking days off to go on Jeep trips in the desert, or car shows, and whatnot.

I have taken Red Cross First Aid courses numerous times, because worked in oil patch. IIRC, third degree burns mean the skin in the burned area is completely gone, and the underlying flesh is burned. But I think they are moving away from the "degree" nomenclature to something that does take burned extent into account. I have had "third degree" burns many times from being hit by a droplet of welding slag. Right through 3 layers of skin, and into the meat. No big deal, and not even very painful, because tiny in extent, less than 1/8" diameter. Scarcely worth a bandaid.

Thanks! Really, the severity of the burn has to be some function of both depth and extent. A pinpoint third-degree burn, like I described is a minor annoyance. A bad sunburn on 30% of your body can fuck you right up, even though the skin is never broken.

That's what I've always thought. Plus, three degrees of burn severity makes sense, whereas using only 3 degrees to describe the area of injury from less than 1% to 100% of one's skin surface doesn't make much sense.

Totes agree. That's where I probably got my misunderstanding -- Someone burned over 80% of their skin coverage, regardless of the depth, is in a lot more trouble than some with a small area of deep damage.

The skin is the largest organ on or in the human body. Extensive damage is 'Bad'.

478 That's a balancing act with the fluids and kidneys, JQ. The sodium is the Big Evil in that scenario. Spring and Summer bring God's bounty with all the fresh fruits and vegetables that I just-so-happen to love, so I thank Him for that.

I am on the diuretics, as well. I also have full kidney function, so I can drink coffee instead, sometimes. I also flush myself with bottled water with an occasional Gatorade-type drink if my sodium is low enough for the day.

508 I've never done this before. Wake up at 0300 (Local) and fire up the ol' interwebs.

Been at my folks' home the past few days to be with me Ma and me ailin' Pa. I think I got about 3 hours of solid sleep, and now I am here.

Anyway, good morning, fellow insomniacs and early risers.

511 Huh. Turns out my hash changed. Don't mind me. I was seeing if my hash would change posting from my sooper sekrit VPN rather than the local thingy. Shows what i know about them computers.

512 Just to see how mushed up his brain is and how they are protecting him. Said it will be 45 more days until they do it again.

515 I am oddly proud to admit not only have I never heard Veep Throat Harris' voice, but I am still not sure how to pronounce her first name.

Kind of like my full-on embargo of ever hearing Barky McFuckstick's blathering about anything he ever uttered.

BTW, mega dittos to whomever came up with the moniker "Veep Throat."

Hell, even the Boss's hash changed a couple months ago. So, there it is.

Good morning.

Usually I am in bed (going on 0400 here). Awake and fretting about stuff. But, in bed with the lights off. Thought I'd try to mix things up a bit.

518 Extra long perked coffee today.
Should wake me up

520 I gotta admit that hearing trucks on the highway and the occasional freight train horns is kind of soothing.

I might take me a nap, so's I can be alert to take care of Dad while Mom goes to Mass.

521 Good morning, Horde, I just got tired of thrashing around in bed trying to get comfortable so here I am. I was planning on getting up in a half hour anyway.

Early awakening on a day that promises nothing but rain. Perhaps it is time to tackle the accumulation of items not put away and those no longer needed in our basement. Weeded one of our garden beds yesterday after assisting with two scouts' Eagle leadership projects.
