Gun Thread: Sunday Evening Edition! [Weasel]

AZ deplorable isolated 1 032121 scaled.jpg
From PowerLine Blog [h/t] AZ deplorable isolated

Howdy y'all! It's Sunday again! And what do we do on Sunday, oh, say around 7pm Eastern? Hmmm? You guessed it! It's time for the thread before the ONT! So let's gather 'round a burning tire, fight over a can of cat food, and remember the good old days! Okay, maybe I'm rushing things a wee bit. We're not at burning tire/cat food stage quite yet. We'll probably get there eventually but for now we can talk about guns 'n shooting, let's just be careful of who might overhear us and our wrongthink.

Oh, I swear I'm going to get back to making videos at the farm. I had a long spell this winter where I wasn't able to get down there other than for very quick trips, and I want to get back to producing videos at least every few weeks. I'm making them for you all, so please let me know if you have any particular requests or ideas regarding content. Handguns or rifles? Large caliber or small? Ammo tests? Without your input I'm just making stuff up as I go along, so think about it and let me know in the comments or by email.

And with that, let's get to wrongthinking below, shall we?

I have been writing about the need for practice a lot lately. Unfortunately, current ammo prices and availability make live-fire practice at best an expensive proposition and at worst, impractical. Some time ago I grabbed this exchange between our pals Ladyl and Jim SND out of the comments.

...It would be too basic for all you experts!

Posted by: Ladyl, Insurrectionist

Ma'am, d'ya know how a bunch of us "experts" got to get called "experts"?

By practicing the BASICS. Thousands and thousands of times, over.

Posted by: Jim

The point our pal Jim is making is that shooting is a skill that requires a bigly lot of practice, as in thousands and thousands of rounds of practice, if it is something you want to be able to do consistently well. That's not an exaggeration. It took me years of study and practice both with and without an instructor to become proficient with a rifle. The same with handguns, too. I spent years going to the range for an hour or more at least once and sometimes twice per week, shooting countless rounds in the process. I cannot imagine how many total rounds. Take my word for it, though, a whole lot of practice and a whole lot of rounds downrange.

Conceptually, shooting is easy. Align the sights on the target and squeeze the trigger without moving the gun. That's all you need to do. Easy-peasey, right? Unfortunately, not so much. Being easy in concept and being easy in practice are two vastly different things. If you're just starting out, congratulations! You can make as much or as little of the sport as you like, and it doesn't require abilities such as speed or great strength to do successfully. I have had my ass absolutely handed to me on a rifle range by meek little grandmotherly types who smiled sweetly as they did it. What it does require is commitment, diligence and practice. Lots and lots of practice. Set goals for yourself and practice with a purpose towards those goals. Bad day at the range? Make whatever was giving you trouble the last time you were at the range the first thing you work on the next time. Keep notes and your targets and study them.

As I was learning to shoot, sometimes ammo was plentiful and relatively inexpensive, and sometimes it was expensive and hard to come by. Eventually it occurred to me to buy whenever I could and not worry too much at the ups and downs of the ammo market, which leads us to today. Obviously you cannot shoot what you don't have or cannot buy. I get it. But that doesn't mean throw up your hands and give up on shooting and practicing your gun handling skills.

First, make certain your basic self-defense needs are covered, and frankly that's probably something on the order of 10 to 20 rounds, total. Really, how often are you getting into gunfights? If you find yourself regularly going through 20+ rounds in this fashion, you may have other problems which need to be addressed. Next comes your supply of practice ammo, and I have never been one to subscribe to the "only shoot your carry ammunition" school of thought. It's sounds cool when discussed on internet shooting forums, but honestly I don't know of anyone who is paying for their own ammunition and actually only practices with their carry ammo. I have fancy hollow point stuff for self-defense and just buy regular ol' ball ammo for practice. As a matter of fact I sometimes carry regular ol' ball ammo. Anyhoo...

So what happens if you cannot source ammunition reliably? Shooting skills are perishable, and must be practiced to maintain proficiency. Live fire is best, and as we have discussed, some practice is better than no practice at all. So you may be forced to rely on little or no live fire, and instead practice with training tools such as the Strikeman System, or even other drills, such as the Penny Drill, described below.

When ammo is short, make it a habit to continue practicing so your muscle memory and grip mechanics do not fade altogether. If it helps, set aside a time each week and spend as little as 20 minutes on gun handling. If you haven't already done so, consider .22LR rifles or handguns for live fire. They are fun, relatively inexpensive to shoot, and require the same skill set as larger calibers. I am not making this up. That is frequently all that I shoot for funsies when I'm at the farm.

So what have you done to maintain proficiency? Have you had to adjust your practice routine due to a lack of ammo, and if so, what are you doing to supplement your range time?

First up, we have a great range report from our pal and delightful 'ette all doubt removed who is mostly a lurker, but who we're hoping will come out of the shadows of Canadian lurkerdom and continue to contribute!

My husband and I finally made it to the indoor 50 yard range. I have to get more familiar with my Tikka T1X .22lr and the scope, breathing, body position and everything else that affects accuracy and precision but I'm getting there. I'm at the "consistently inconsistent" stage but less inconsistent each time. Yay!

I posted in the Gun Thread recently that I hoped to get to the range and report back with 5 shots all in the same place. As you can see from the photo, I did it - or as close as I'll ever get. The grouping is 1/2" x 1/2" on a 1.5cm metric grid and came on my last 5 shots of the day so I guess practice, practice, practice really is key.

adr 1 032121 scaled.jpg

See? SEE? DO YOU SEE, PEOPLE?? Practice! With a .22! Will you just look at that group!! Our pal all doubt removed set a goal and practiced with a purpose! Very nicely done!

Annie Oakley continues...

A bit of background - We had talked about getting into target shooting for a while but never got that far. One local range only allowed people with Canada's Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) in and the other allowed non-licensed people in as guests of PAL holders. As neither of us had a PAL or knew anyone with one, shooting remained on the backburner.

Last May, Justin Trudeau announced the gun ban and that's when we decided it was now or never to get our PALs so we signed up for the course, which included licensing for non-restricted (think hunting rifles) and restricted (think handguns and scary black "military-style assault" weapons, at least the ones that didn't get banned). It took the RCMP almost 5 months to approve us, which I've heard is quite speedy and we're now the proud holders of both licenses.

Congratulations, and great shooting all doubt removed! Thanks for sending this for us all to appreciate!

Not to be outdone, our pal Gouverneur Morris reports on a recent range trip:

New gun owner (Glock 43), fifth time shooting using personal instruction, and I have progressed from very nervous picking up a gun to loving the time on the range. Today I shot 2 boxes of ammo, the most at one session so far. My rule is shoot 1 box, buy 2.

This was the first time using the 4 circle target. I am right handed, left eye dominant and had difficulty with focusing on the right side circles. The regular body outline target seemed easier after that. I practiced one-handed right; and for the first time, one-handed left. Both targets were at 21 feet.

I will practice dry fire before my next session in 2 weeks. Great day on the range.

Gouverneur Morris 2 032121 scaled.jpg

Gouverneur Morris 1 032121 scaled.jpg

Nice shooting Gouverneur Morris, and I like the shoot 1, buy 2 strategy, as well. Have you considered making trips between sessions with an instructor to work on what you have learned? Very nicely done and thank you for sending this in!

Next, our pal Picric recently attended a concealed carry permit class in North Carolina, and was nice enough to send us a report.

On Saturday I went to my CCW class for a NC CCW permit. All went well, it was an 8 hour course total, the instructor is a teacher with my Wife. We began with a quick history lesson on Firearms the evolution from the Flintlock to primer caps to modern cartridge pistols, her husband is an avid collector of guns and had many original guns and a few reproductions. Almost all of them were in the strange or unusual variety.

I was pleasantly surprised at the others in the class. There were 11 of us in all. 4 couples of newlyweds or engaged in mid to late 20's, two were young men also in the mid 20's, and Me in my mid 20's (plus or Minus 20 years or so). One was from New York and had just had a death in his family and the CCW class was the easiest way to transfer the guns from New York to NC, but all of us had an interest in carrying for self defense.

After that we sat down and went over all the difference in Revolvers, and Semi-automatic pistols the strengths and weakness of each, the caliber differences, how to find what caliber your gun uses. Next gun safety and practical gun operation, then Lunch and some practice with a laser gun bullet target.

She also had targets that would register hits on a target with the laser so you could see how you did without having to go out and use the range. After that we sat back down and went over laws for NC, the Castle Doctrine, and what to do if and when you are pulled over by the police. You can lose your CCW permit if you do not produce your CCW Permit with your ID whether you have your gun on you or not. Next we took our written test which we all passed, but the wording on several of the questions really threw me off, and finally we out back to the target range to shoot.

The Distances were 5 yards, 10 Yards and 15 Yards, 10 shots at each one. I had my EC9, but I only had one 7 round magazine, so to keep myself from reloading at each distance, I borrowed one of the "Loaner Guns" offered by the instructor, since there were 3 magazines with 10 rounds in each loaded and ready and I am so glad I did. I used a Ruger Mark 2 (0.22) with an odd handle grip, hard to explain but it had a raised place for the right thumb to go, that made the grip on the gun quite nice. I will be looking for one or the new Mark 4's in the future. Hard to see on the picture below, but 29 shots are in the center, and one on the 9 area at 8 o'clock location. We all qualified shooting, and that was the end of the course.

I came home, got on-line and registered for my appointment for the Sheriff, for August 13. That is the earliest appointment I could get to fill out my paperwork and let the wait begin.

picric 1 032121 scaled.jpg

Nice shooting, Picric and congratulations on passing the class! Damn, first available slot was in August? Just shows how many new permit holders there are. Thanks for the great report!

Next up our pal Javems reminds us that it's not only ammo prices which have gone through the roof, but that reloading prices used to lower as well.

When Jerry Miculek speaks, Weasel listens.

'Jer' covers a couple of things in this that had never really occurred to me, and which all revolver owners should consider. I try to generally treat my guns kindly and just think it's just a commonsense practice. How about you all?

******

A question I'm asked at least once a week in Gun Thread email is whether or not I use hand grenades and propane tanks for cooking hamburgers at WeaselAcres. I'm going to have to admit that despite the method's popularity I do not, only because pine trees and fiery explosions do not mix. I also don't want to anger CBD by stepping on his Food Thread's toes. I was happy, however, to find someone else has tackled the issue.

Next we have a very cool website on handmade wooden guns sent in by our pal Floun der. Amazing work! I bet WeaselWoman would love a wooden model of one of my match guns for our anniversary!

$10 Glock?

Running this again from last week because it seems the limit of 100 total chances aren't yet sold out.

tinFW school scaled.jpg

Finally, we have a very worthy cause sent to us by our pal and delightful 'ette Teresa in Fort Worth

Our youngest daughter's private school - for students with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities - is holding an online fundraiser this year. One of the raffle items is a Glock 45. The school got caught flat-footed by the COVID stuff, so they are scrambling to raise funds this year. This is Rebecca's 12th year at the school, and she will be able to continue here the rest of her life, as they have adult programs in place as well. It has been a life saver for our family!

Here's a link to the school website Green Oaks Education and Support, Inc., and a link to the raffle, so get out your credit cards, give bigly by supporting a great cause, and maybe win a Glock 45!

******

I'm adding another ammo and gun vendor to the list this week, Bud's Gun Shop. Bud's has been around for a while, and I have purchased a number of guns from them, all without issue. Each arrived in as-advertised condition, completing a smooth transaction, and I do not hesitate in recommending them. The prices were almost always the best to be found. I noticed this week they are advertising ammunition for sale, and while it ain't cheap, it's at least for sale. Have a look.

9 Yes I did get to range
Fired the entire session at 12 yesterday but was all over the place, bend mostly left and right.
The range has ammo but must shoot it off there, $29.95 for a box.
I plan to get the BB gun out and get practicing.
Also found 1 of my oldest mags jambs if all 7 rounds are loaded, 5 and it works fine. It is from mid 80s.

Hello Pew Pew thread!! No range report this weekend."all doubt removed" that is a helluva nice grouping. Keep at it
Now, I have a total of 25 rounds of self defense ammo that I keep at home. Hornady Critical Defense hollow point in 9mm. This ammo stays at home as the ranges I go to are in NJ and hollow point is illegal IIRC. I just stick with shooting the "practice" rounds I own or buy at the range. Though when you look at it 98% of the practice rounds can be used for self defense ammiright?

39 Missed last week due to working on a project. Good news is that this week, the brown truck of happiness has brought smokeless powder of different sorts which is good because due to the current high prices, I will be reloading a bit for even 9mm which I generally prefer not to do.

Ammo prices continue to snake downward a bit and more availability being seen for .223/5.56, 7.62x39,and 9mm in pistol rounds and firearms are coming back into stock online slowly. Primers are in short supply unless you want to pay nosebleed prices via Gunbroker. Rimfire is still scarce and pricey.

50 27 Dave,
Within about 100 yards or so, iron sights can be pretty competitive depending on eye sight, what you are trying to do with the firearm, and type of iron sights. Because I learned to shoot that way, I prefer good iron sights over scopes until I get to 100 yards or more in centerfire and on handguns, iron sights are still the default for me rather than red dots or holos.

67 Lucky Gunner's fine, .35/round a for 22LR is ..... what it is. Wow. But a modest amount of ammo bought at panic prices will come out in the wash, overall, when it comes to the personal finances of most.

And that's without adaptation.

Hell, cut your cable and that alone will allow you to buy .... a 1K brick of 22LR .... twice a year, and be even. Yikes.

76 Beautiful but uneventful duty day at the range this week, but unfortunately not a lot of shooting. Just a little practice with the CZ-83, and some sighting in with one of the M1s.

Which was for this morning, an action rifle match. And I couldn't sleep last night, so no match. Furious.

Didn't get a chance to chat with Border Patrol, but I can just imagine morale at the moment.

Posted by: rhomboid at March 21, 2021 07:32 PM (OTzUX)

77 Note: I just went out to the gun store to work out a sense of how to budget for an M18 purchase (see #29). The cupboard was bare at the gun store I visited. That being said, the M18 there was going for MSRP: $1099 for one. I'll be saving up the money to get one, hopefully by the end of the year. And with any luck prices may have come down at that point.

Interesting thing about the M18 vs the M17. You'd think the M18 would be more compact with a shorter barrel. But the mag is bigger, so you COULD carry the M18 concealed, but it would print like mad. (And on that score I'm not worried about the cops in TX thanks to open carry; what I AM worried about is losing the deterrence factor that comes with carrying concealed.)

80 Right now, the niche and slower moving ammo is what is suffering. .30-06 is extremely expensive when you can get it. .308 has okay prices and availability. Even hunting rifle brass, other than .308 or .223, is short on supply.

As for me, I will be shooting reloads in handguns probably for the next six months or so and shooting a bit of rimfire and reloads for rifle calibers.

97 Powder Valley, a prime seller of reloading components, has an interesting story out on their website about the great primer shortage. Basically, do not expect much improvement over the next 6 months at the least. Remington's bankruptcy has worsened a primer and ammo shortage due to Remington had to pay cash for components before the end. Vista Group (Speer, Federal, CCI) bought Remington's ammo and component business (except Sierra bought Barnes bullets) but have been slower than anticipated in taking over the Remington ammo plant at Lonoke, AR and just in February completed bringing back laid off employees.
We are also not seeing foreign primers being imported either which happened in the past.

101 I haven't shot anything but reloads out of handguns for ..... close to a decade. A few "familiarization" rounds with self-defense rounds, after which I use my own special reloads that I attempt to make replicate the felt recoil of those factory rounds. Other than that, all mine.

Have ample "reserves" of factory, occasionally dip into those slightly for new/guest shooters (nobody shoots my reloads except me).

104 The weather was beautiful in Michigan this weekend, best of 2021 so far, so of course it was time to return to the undisclosed private range!

One of our participants actually went so far as to do a cylinder dump with his revolver, and when everyone stared at him in surprise, he said: "Yeah, I'm not going to waste ammo like that often, but it felt good - kind of like lighting a cigar with a $100 bill."

It felt great to get back into our system of drills. I've been husbanding my .380 all winter and shooting .32 instead, so this was the big chance to let the PK 380 have something to eat and it did not disappoint.

The best part was one of my daughters came out and showed she was still handy with a Beretta Cheetah. Some of the Michigan Morons know what I'm talking about. We rounded out the session by obliterating a couple of water jugs with .44 Magnum JHP - which is technically cheaper to shoot than .38 Special right now.

112 whig I mentioned that blog post at PowderValley, if it's the same one, a while back - thanks for bringing it up, it is quite interesting for anyone interested in the industrial background to current shortages. The post made a broad claim that imports (Europe) would not help ease the primer shortage this time, unlike '13 and after - but apart from brief discussion of the Russian case (Tulammo and Wolf, to those who reload), there was no explanation as to why Fiocchi, S&B, Ginex, et al would not be factors in supply this time.

127 I had an outstanding gun week. I did a build with my cousin Tuesday night, took him to the indoor range Wed and my range Thurs. I did a three way trade and ended up with a brand new SAR9 pistol. It's now my favorite pistol, fits my hand so well and so easy to disassemble that an AR guy can do it!! To top it all off, on Fri, Midway had NATO large rifle primers for about 10 mins. and an hour later they had small ones for about 10 mins, limit of one. $72 and $60, I have to hand it to Midway, that's normal price for NATO primers!!!

128 rhomboid,
I generally reload for the more rare cartridges in rifle or handgun and simply save the brass from more regular cartridges like 5.56/.30-06/9mm/.30-30/7.62x39 in the good times.

I actively dislike reloading for 9mm or .380 ACP and until about March of last year, it was cheaper to buy range blasting ammo and keep the brass rather than reloading. Revolver reloads, though and some specialty AR rounds like the 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel were worth reloading even before the ammo shortage. I also can and have reloaded 7.62x39 which I did for the last ammo shortage. Of all the significant accuracy advantages in reloading, I see a great gap between the Russian/Yugo/wherever blasting ammo and the accuracy of my 7.62x39 reloads. It is a pretty doggone accurate cartridge, so much so that I built an AR to shoot the stuff after getting good results in a SKS.

For the last couple of weeks supply was increasing but now it seems to be falling again. I notice there seem to be 'waves' in availability, like a cargo ship arrived from Europe or something and now everyone's got plenty of Fiocchi or PPU.

I'm still haunted by the memory of seeing *corrosive* Tokarev ammo for $1.50 a round. Seriously, what the hell?

130 96 Catch Thirty-Thr33 @ 77- Yeah, that's like the G19X developed for the military trials. Weird duck with a G17 frame and a G19 slide. Didn't like them, didn't want one. So I bought a G45 which is the same damn thing only black, actually conceals pretty good on my gangly angular frame.
Posted by: Eromero at March 21, 2021 07:40 PM (gjvwR)

The story behind that Glock was strange indeed. I can understand why the military didn't go with it. I never heard of the M18 until I saw some guy on YouTube (I forgot the channel) pull one out and point out that the USMC switched to them. This while researching the M17. (The only way I know the USAF got them was by seeing SF having them holstered at the front gate of a base I was at recently.)

131 rhomboid,
I generally reload for the more rare cartridges in rifle or handgun and simply save the brass from more regular cartridges like 5.56/.30-06/9mm/.30-30/7.62x39 in the good times.

Should it come to pass, thinking about a subdivision for preppers. Notional name now is Parato Acres.

5 Acre plots, zoned for Ag so you can plant some crops and have a little livestock. Thinking shipping container homes and off-grid power options.

138 I need to check out some "point shooting" videos (was one linked here? Seem to half-recall so). With the CZ-83 this time, I tried out some "natural" point shooting, and results were excellent. Paper profile target, 20 feet away. The pistol is a very naturally pointing easy to shoot item, so shooting this way at short ranges seems a good fit. Carefully aimed single-action, vs. "point shot", results, showed no significant difference.

140 I had bought a Hi-Lux 1-4 X 24 (5.56) some time ago but none of my rifles needed it. Good price and just gathering dust at the pawn shop. Nice green reticle.

Then I bought a Daewoo DR-200 with a nice folding stock and top rail already installed by the previous owner a few years later and why not?

The Daewoo shot great with irons out to 300 yards, then I slapped the Hi-Lux on it with the quick detach and lord almighty! From 100-500 yards the rifle just shined, using Federal 5.56 55 grain ball ammo, simply point and click. Bang! Clang!

It's nice when things come together. Did I tell you those Koreans make good stuff?

I will add to it carry carry carry.

When I first started carrying I was a little nervous about it - always worrying am I printing? And adrenalin was up a bit. So I moved from carrying occasionally to carrying anytime I knew I wasn't going somewhere it would be a felony to carry - in the DC area that's plenty. Now I kind of feel weird when not carrying.

147 112 Rhomboid,
My guess is that S&B, Wolf, etc. are making more selling whole ammunition than components.

Covid, the election, and riots, have caused a whole wave of people wanting ammo more so than reloading components.

Plus, shipping is fussier for components than loaded ammunition. Hodgdon's has been having a devil of a time getting a lot of their Extreme powders into the US from Australia even before end of 2019. Not real happy about Western Powders being sold to Hodgdon's either. Accurate and Ramshot have evaporated since then and Hodgdon's is bound to streamline powder offerings.

Back when I was in high school in the late sixties I put a scope on my 600 Rem. I used a high type mount that let me see the sights under the scope. It worked great my senior year as my Weaver V7 fogged up and I shot a buck with the iron sights. Later hunting where more distant shots were needed I found the scope needed to be mounted flat to the barrel.

166 whig, last time I calculated, I was saving in each caliber, with the smallest advantage in 9mm, but substantial in 38 and 45ACP, and 30 carbine. And of course in 30-06. I have been fortunate to stock my components substantially via local/private bargain purchases, and only at good discounts on commercial buys, so my cost basis is very low (and I don't even caste bullets). And of course this leaves out the customization advantage, especially in revolver ammo, which I utilize.

Experience has helped slim the process, so I don't spend a lot of time making the range fodder. Independence from the market and panics is obviously a bonus, though not a reason I got into reloading.

I have been impressed with their DR-200 and I believe parts are now easier to obtain which is always a good turn. The DR-200 is the same as the AR-100 but with the AWB nonsense such as thumbhole stock, no bayonet lug, no muzzle device but these are all easy to reset except the bayonet lug.

I was trying to limit my calibers, already wasn't shooting what I owned often enough, and was developing a concern about out-of-production guns (most of mine), re parts, longevity, etc.

There was an interesting Nagant pictured on The High Road years back, a presentation gun with the electro-penciled signature of Kliment Voroshilov, then the top defense official of the USSR.

- Most folks prefer the Ruger Mk II to the other models but the Mk IV gets great reviews and is MUCH easier to take down for cleaning.
- MidwayUSA has mixed availability on snap caps to do dry firing. Get 'em while you can. The local Cabelas has none on the shelf.
- Congrats on those great targets in the post. That is some fine shooting.
- Believe it or not, even toy caps are hard to find. This came up in a discussion about making your own percussion caps using the toy caps for the ignition.
- In theory, you can dry fire Ruger center fire revolvers with the transfer bar all day long. I still use snap caps for rim fire and center.

198 166, I found that I could buy 9mm cheaper than reloading it because of where I live so I simply saved the brass for a rainy day. Ditto for .30-06 blaster grade unless I went to cast.

If I went with lead handgun bullets or bought thousands of fmj bullets at a whack, I probably could have saved a bit but I have physical disabilities also in the balance so I reload where I get literally the biggest bang per buck. Plus, my 9mm pistols have different feeding requirements--one is short chambered and picky about ogives, another has a softer frame, another one will feed almost anything, and so on. Most of my firearms are ex military or police and somewhat collectable so that makes altering them a no go.

199 ck, I got mine from an off-grid (well, not monitored by shopping bots, nor well known) online source in MO, at a lot less than $50 - that place consistently had CCIs of all kinds for less than even PowderValley, so there was a pattern there, an unusual one but good for the customer. And I think my Tulammo military LRPs were in the $30s, too. Whatever. Savings over factory 5.56/30-06 are substantial at either price level.

202 "First, make certain your basic self-defense needs are covered, and frankly that's probably something on the order of 10 to 20 rounds, total. Really, how often are you getting into gunfights? If you find yourself regularly going through 20+ rounds in this fashion, you may have other problems which need to be addressed. Next comes your supply of practice ammo,"

... 1995, sure. 2021, no. You need to consider what happens if you actually have to use that SD piece/ammo, or you get red flagged, or you otherwise become a prohibited person, or you lose access to your home - hint: you will be unarmed if that's all you have.

If you need one pistol, you need two pistols and extra ammo, with the spares preferably stashed competently in more than one place. A full case of pistol ammo will go a long way. Doesn't need to all be JHP, but it *does* need to be earmarked away from practice.

As someone with decades of training and many tens of thousands of rounds of practice - it does not take years and thousands of rounds to become adequate. And on a long time scale, adequate with deep supplies beats being world class with a few boxes of ammo.

203 Late to a great thread, once again.

Another stellar outing, Mr. Weasel, and, I second what Jim said about us "experts." Though, I would not characterize myself as an expert so much as one willing to learn from his mistakes, which have been many and varied.

One year, when I was really trying to learn the art of the 1911, I was shooting IDPA and Steel Challenge every single month, along with regular practice. My best guess: I went through 6K rounds of 45 acp that year.

I don't shoot nearly as much, due to lack of ammunition, but, I still get out regularly to look for any bad habits I might have developed and then try to clean them up.

208 197 JTB, one of the issues with the newer MIM process versus the older forged parts is that MIM parts seem to have a higher rate of parts breakage and that includes firing pins.

Gunsmith Jerry Kuhnhausen, now deceased, famous for his Kuhnhausen manuals really took S&W to task for their deterioration of quality using MIM parts. Kuhnhausen went so far as to instruct gunsmiths that they would be better off fitting older forged parts to replace MIM parts in new S&W revolvers made after the 1996-97 changeovers. Seen some similar evidence of the S&W Third Generation problems regarding MIM parts breakage as well and they had a similar changeover in time from forged to MIM. Ruger also uses some MIM parts now versus the older forged and their investment castings.

I had a Mosin M44 carbine back some years ago. Got asked to never bring it back to the range when I shot it during a match one time. Seems it was way too loud and the muzzle blast was ferocious and a sight to behold. I never knew anything was wrong until my buddy sat down to shoot it and I was next to him. Buy one. Mine is very accurate and the only downsides are reloading is a bear and double action will give you a trigger workout but with 7 rounds I think it's a decent SHTF defensive handgun.

Most are double and single action if I remember right with the single action only being rare since the Soviets had them all converted. Prices are only going to go up.

Watch your email, amigo. Might take a day or three, but she'll write it in recipe form, for you.

As far as the "mag dump" on a revolver? I've had fun shooting those in IDPA Stock Service Revolver class. And yes, a S&W Model 28, 4" bbl., can be emptied into a 3 yard target (from the low ready) in well under one second. That said, I'm WAY out of practice on fancy shootin' like that, but fast three and six round bursts were a part of my practice till about ten years ago. I'm of the personal opinion, that if you're going to CCW and shoot to "Stop the Threat" (as is doctrine & law), the fastest way to do that is to land multiple rounds on target quickly before a flinch, fall or fight reaction can occur. If you're justified with one round, you're just as justified with a burst of three, to try to ensure a STOP and not merely a "pause".

225 161 Catch Thirty-Thr33 @ 130- I have a P320 version of the M17 and thought it was not the best choice after the M9 but then I thought the M9 was a poor choice after the 1911. The 1911 was what we shot in boot camp and the M9 was what we retired with. Yeah, my lawn and whatnot.

240 Yes, you can certainly save a bunch that way if you buy 3000-5000 bullets at a whack but I tend to shoot premium or fairly obscure cartridges where a bunch of .308 150 gr. bullets would simply get shoved into the back for a rainy day. So I may have about 5k to 10k of 9mm bullets but that would be in fmj, hp, lead round nose, truncated cone nose, and several different weights depending on what I shot, where I shot it, and for what purpose.

A lot of the older 9mm before the 1990's could be picky as to which ammo and bullet profile/wt, they liked.

268 233 Weasel,
Was yours the 1903 or the later 03A3? If you were firing with 1903 open sights and no Ohare micrometer, that is impressive shooting with an 1903.

It is amusing that the Army had a catfight between heads of Ordnance for several decades over which iron sight should be used. Buffington's original iron sights came about on the 1884 Springfield and later Trapdoors, was gotten rid of, then returned for the Krag 1901 model which the 1903 sights were based upon. Crozier, the guy in between, preferred the simpler open sights with an incredibly fine aperture sight leaf that would be used for fine distance shots. That is the 1902 Krag sight when Crozier took over Ordnance. The poor Krag had more sight models in its short life span than probably any other issued rifle.

I get you, but he was basically rage dumping because it had been so long since we could go shooting. A different friend bought one of those old Colt Police revolvers and even on double action I was amazed at how smooth it shot.

I think there's a clear difference between shooting "quickly" and feeling "rushed."

Nice thing about playing with 'mouse guns' is the recovery time between shots is silly short.

291 258 Lysenko, I am talking about foreign and domestic obsolete military cartridges (e.g. Krag, 7.65 Argentine, 8x56r Austrian, 6.5 Carcano, etc.).

Those generally sell out at midpoint to the shortage but then ammo companies are not a) making the brass for it, and b) because no new brass is being made for it during a shortage, no ammunition can be made either. You could not buy factory Krag ammo for about 4-5 years after the 2008 crunch simply because it took that long for Remington to make a special production run of it.

Right now, you can get all the safari type heavy ammo you want for for not much of a premium if any, ditto for .50 BMG.

293 Grump, the guys with the muzzle brakes on .308s (or other flavors) are really the problem. Before my time, the range used to routinely ask those guys to set up on lane 30, which is separated from the line by a small brick wall (it also has a nice custom "bench" that's designed for rifle rests). And anyone with a .50 - though those are rare in here in CA.

When picking a lane I carefully check to see if any of those rigs are nearby.

Two problems, thus far have proven insurmountable: 1. Fragility. The caseless round is not of sufficient self-bonding physical strength to resist the wear, tear & all around beating that gear takes when on a fighting soldier's web gear or in his pack. It chips, fractures and otherwise becomes unserviceable. 2. Cooking-off in a hot chamber. Not desirable in a firefight, where it's most likely to occur. An annoyance on the practice range, but Life or Death in war.

Right, but even a good armorer has to cut corners. For example, blanks don't have the same recoil as live rounds, yet you see people able to fire weapons on full auto with perfect control. Those are the things I talk about, and also the current market for people who might want to have one of John Wick's guns.

I was shooting at an outdoor range, guy showed up with a 300 WinMag with a muzzle brake, and he checked to make sure it was okay with the people on either side and made sure to warn about keeping ear protection in place. We're talking minimum 10 yards between benches, yet, the guy was very conscientious about warning everyone.

Another time, I was at an indoor range, and some jackass came in with an AR with a muzzle brake. I was several lanes down and even then, it was enough to send me out to get some foam plugs to put under ear muffs.

Baby steps for me this week. Had my pistol checked out after having mechanical problems taking it apart for cleaning during class. All seems well now. Nice young man at Sportsman's talked me through it so well that I could successfully remove the slide *and* put it back on at home all by myself.

Also finally learned how to lock the slide back w/o a magazine in. Little things like this make me happy because I have no mechanical ability whatsoever.

On my to do list is to get my CC permit app in, now that I have my certificate (I am certifiable??!). I could carry in Wyo w/o a permit, but I think it will be good to have for travel. Have 2 epic road trips planned this year-- Montana in June, and TEXAS (!!!) in October.

322 I know people who would never consider shooting black powder because of the cleaning requirement. (Also, they get impatient with the pace of shooting that slowly compared to semi-autos.)

Folks, it ain't that bad. Yes, it has to be done after every session but requires only water to clean and the usual lubes and oils afterwards. It takes me about 15 minutes to clean a cap and ball revolver start to finish but I take my time. And there is a certain satisfaction in maintaining them. I have black powder guns I've used for decades without a trace of rust or corrosion.

327 306 Weasel,
The smallest aperture sight that I have ever seen on an issued rifle is my 1902 Krag with the Crozier sight aperture leaf. I really do not know how they expected someone to actually see through the darn thing in a battle. The 1902 sight is basically the 1898 open sights (almost a spitting image of the new Brit Lee-Enfield sights) with a foldover sight aperture leaf with a tiny hole for fine shooting but as those 1902 Krag sights had no LR windage, you had guesstimate windage to push the shot left or right. The early British Lee Enfield sights did have LR windage adjustments until midpoint of WWI.

332 All right, quick range report for posterity and then I'll read the content/comments, swearsies.

I ordered some more buckshot from LAX Ammo, they were out of what I ordered (and paid for) but they called me up and asked if they could substitute something else if they threw in 10 more rounds. I said yes, and they sent me 60 rounds of 9 pellet buckshot of the 'Mili' brand. Never heard of it. But the good news is, it's stout enough to cycle my Benelli Super 90 with zero malfunctions and it creates lethal patterns at 20 yards. Winning.

Next up, testing 200 grain ball ammo, this time from Freedom Munitions out of Idaho. I tested 50 rounds through my SR 1911 and my G21, which was on carry rotation this week. Round functioned flawlessly, printing a bit low. At shorter ranges, I got better groups with my G21 (I never have been in love with the 1911 trigger), but all the way out at 25 yards, I got 4/5 head hits with the SR1911, but only 1/5 with the G21. Ouch, not winning. More practice time needed for the G21.

Finally, put 50 rounds of 36 grain nickel cased Armscorp .22lr out of the CZ 75 Kadet adapter. This has been a real problem round for me, in multiple pistols. 1/2

Every tank round is shipped in it's own (very) protective heavy cardboard tube or box, until the tank crew & logistics team hand up each round to the gunner's hatch in the turret, where it's handed down and placed into the turret's shell delivery mechanism. That takes care of the "fragility" issue. I know they have doctrine to prevent cook-offs in the tube, but I'm not conversant with the details thereof. Betcha SMH will know!

Generally, if you buy one to be a shooter, you go ahead and buy the dies, brass, bullets, and any ammo you can scrounge up at the same time. Otherwise, you risk having a firearm with nothing to feed it.

Prvi Partisan, by simply making brass and ammo available for these old warhorses, has raised prices for these old rifles. Even about 6-8 years ago, Austrian 8x56r rifles used in WWI and revamped as carbines for WWII were bringing only about $100-200 in good condition because no one could find the ammo to fire it other than dubious WWII vintage milsurp ammo. Prvi now makes it. Ditto for Carcanos.

Same issues. Linked or unlinked, ammo being fed via chute to a Gatling gun is taking one hell of a beating along the way. A big chip out of one shell could stop the whole parade. And at 6,000 rounds per min. rate, even the six or seven barrels wouldn't have enough time to "rest" as they rotate to not become way to hot to prevent a caseless cook off. NOTE: a HUGE amount of chamber heat is drawn off with every ejected cartridge empty. It might seem "extra bulk", but it serves a very important and valuable purpose, even in the waste cycle.

Good practice distraction when firing pistol next to someone like that though.

360 Skip,

You mentioned wanting either a Walker Colt or Dragoon. Just so you are aware, these are BIG revolvers, especially the Walker. The Walker wasn't carried on the person but in holsters on the saddle. But it is powerful. The Walker was the most powerful handgun in the world until the 357 magnum came along in the the 1930s. But it weighs over 4 pounds IIRC.

How about a thread focusing on the current state-of-the-art in 3D printed guns?

These have improved A LOT in the last year or two. They've gone from designs that were good for one shot (if you were lucky) to designs that can reliably fire thousands of rounds.

Now, in general the "guns" you can make this way are lower receivers and such (i.e., the parts regulated as the "gun" by the ATF), but recently people are even experimenting with using 3D-printed mandrels to electrochemically put the rifling on barrels.

I am a complete novice in this area... I have a 3D printer, but haven't yet made any guns (I've made a bunch of other stuff with it, though, and it is loads of fun). Nonetheless, I find the whole idea fascinating.

Funny you should mention that, I just did an article on The Crow, but it didn't focus on the weapons.

Hollywood still leans on shotguns and revolvers because they take blanks well and are manually cycled. When it comes to auto-loaders, my understanding is that specially modified prop guns are the rule (think integrated blank adapters).

A lot of movies are filmed in the UK, where functional firearms are pretty much illegal, so they're all just glorified starter pistols.

No argument there! FWIW, the newer polymer/carbon/exotics casings are showing early promise to really be an advancement in the art. The reportedly even obdurate (elasticity/stretch & snap back to dimension), quite similar to brass. At about 1/2 to 1/3 the weight of brass. Don't know if they'll end up reloadable or not, but light(er) weight ammo WOULD be a welcome thing!

Hi Weasel. First off, my "ballistic gelatin" is simply 10% unflavored Knox gelatin, with 5 ml. of 1M proprionic acid added to prevent fungal growth. I also add a few drops of cinnamon oil to help clarify the gel. I spent $84 (Amazon) to buy enough gelatin (5 pounds total) in order to cast two 6" X 6" X 16" blocks. I picked up a mold on sale at Midway for $65. However, you could make your own mold or use a plastic bin of the appropriate size. As for working with the stuff, you'll need a paint mixer that attaches to a drill in order to blend in the gelatin powder, a clean 5 gallon plastic bucket, very hot water, and a refrigerator you can place a heavy (22 pounds or so with the steel mold) and hot box that smells like burnt hair. Recycling the blocks is fairly easy, as all you have to do is chop up the used gelatin and melt the stuff in a large (or two) double boilers. And the need to me kept cold, so transport them in a cooler with ice.

By what measure? Black powder cartridges get their power simply by throwing progressively larger pieces of lead downrange. There's not much you do about increasing velocity so you just make a bigger bullet. Since bullets can be made on an individual basis, cap and ball revolvers don't really have a "factory load."

400 380 Javems,
The sights themselves are now a collectible item. The 1901 Buffington sights for the rifle go for well over $150 bucks in full working order, nearly $400 or so for the carbine sights of that same model. The 1902 rifle sights are also severely collectible bringing similar prices as the 1901 Krag sights. The 1894 sights are actually one of the cheaper ones because they were taken off for 96 and 98 Krag sights.

Krag stocks in good shape are very expensive (about 400-500 now without metal) but nothing compared to the handguards (150-200 for the rarer models in good shape). Even the repros have dried up.

425 2/2

That problem child reputation of the Armscorp 36 grain nickel cased came up again. The ammo printed very nice groups, shooting the fuck out of the 10 ring at 7 yards. However, had 3 stovepipes in 50 rounds.
(insert interruption of wife mental breakdown regarding her puppy)

The stovepipes may be the magzines fault, they are very new and you got to really fight to get the 10th round into it. Will test again with 9 rounds.

Finally, when it came time to clean the tools, FUCKING 1911's...and their fucking springs. The Glock, even the CZ 75 was a snap in comparison. I'm sticking to guns made after 1975, I think.

433 425 MAE, you might also want to check the rims on that Armscor .22 LR's. Under the right conditions, that can lead to malfunctions as well. To check your mags, use a sharpie to find out where the rubs are wearing off and where they are not.

You can buy a rim checker for .22 ammo for pretty cheap either on ebay or your better firearm supply sellers online.

439 435 Javems, go to everygunpart.com, as of today, they had two parted out Krags (they buy destroyed receivers). At least one had a handguard in decent shape and original barrel. Both of the stocks, one was original with proof mark but had some damage. Might have been an original carbine stock or one altered to make it so.

About $300 for the lot of parts minus the receiver.

455 397, Hi,

The Walker used the same projectile as the other 44 caliber C and B revolvers but could hold much more powder than any other. Even the Dragoons, big as they were, didn't come close. And the early smokeless revolver rounds tended to be smaller or less powerful. The first 357 magnums took a standard size bullet up to around 1,500 fps, maybe more. And the guns were heat treated to take the higher pressures without being oversized. Don't recall what powder was used.

Weasel, what's to say? The Gun Thread is fast becoming the Industry Standard. I have a sneaky feeling that more than one pair of Editorial Eyes have been watching this space. Nope, no specific knowledge, but it's never too long on the 'net before excellence is noted. Pro-Tip. Sign no contract with PJ Media, unless "Diluting Your Brand" is a major goal.

Tamara Keel of "The View From The Porch" blog rose to become the Handgun Editor for the NRA's "SHOOTING ILLUSTRATED". Jay G. of "Stuck in Massachussetts", became an NRA Staff Writer, and they moved him from MA to VA to do so. And you're already turning out Pro Production Grade content, in both video and print. My prediction? "Good Things To Come".

461 Jean, if that rifle has its original barrel, it will probably do best with those long 140-150 grain bullets as that was the fodder it was built around. It might not like boattails either. Swede Mausers had very long throats with the issued military barrels and if there is some irregularity in the throat, it may not shoot that well with boat tails. That is where the old seating out to nearly the landings came about. It was to minimize the effects of worn and long throats in military rifles that were sporterized.

On old military rifles, for the most part, I have better accuracy with flat based bullets than boat tails unless I have a New Old Stock (NOS) barrel on it. The flat based bullets tend to slug up while the boattails can often let gas leak by in worn barrels.

I've gone a year without pulling a trigger and done just fine on the range with handgun and long rifles. As long as they are sighted, I'm still hitting 10 ring.

Maybe with long distance shooting if you're doing ballistic calcs on the fly and such?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of practice and practice some more. I don't advocate getting rusty on anything but I was just curious if there are actual studies to backup the claim.

Precision long range shooting, certainly. I'm not aware of anything scientific, but know that it takes me some time warming up if I haven't been shooting in a while. I'm still hitting the target, just not at the top of my game. It's a lot like taking multiple guns to the range - it takes some time to reacquaint myself with the trigger and so forth.

I missed that, but I'll go check for it. Email me if you want to chat.

For threesomes, based on my experience...use a pro for the 3rd and be ready for the relationship to blow up. Plan your exit beforehand.

But...man, when it's good...it's GREAT.

489 480 Jean, does it have the original military barrel or an aftermarket?

If original, Mauser barrels could be set back and requalified which would shorten the throat. Quite a few were also rebarrelled as good aftermarket barrels were around for Mausers for quite a few years. Not so much recently.

490 MAE, the S&W Third Generations were the culmination of the DA/SA reliable police pistols for S&W but by that time Glock was eating their lunch on police contracts.

Glocks are an example where sometimes it was better to clean sheet a design rather than Smith's slow and steady adaptation of the Walther P38 design from WWII to the 1990's.

Glock's striker system has more in common with Lee Enfield battle rifles than the hammer and firing pin used in most of the DA/SA pistols of the era.

491 437 GWB, Inexpensive black powder guns:

If a revolver, look for a Pietta 1851 or 1860, preferably with a steel, not brass, frame.

If a rifle, your best bet is a Traditions percussion rifle in 50 caliber. As noted here, percussion caps are darned hard to find right now.

Vintage Gun Scopes (.com) is a great place for, well, vintage scope sales and repairs. Recommended.

Thanks, Weasel, but that was back in 1972 and Weaver fixed that scope on warranty. It spent the next 20+ years on that rifle until I replaced it with a Leupold. This past deer season it can out of retirement because my old knees caused me to fall and damage the scope on the Interarms Mark X I was using so I threw the old Weaver on and sighted it in and shortly thereafter was packing out a buck. Maybe I'll check out Vintage and get the old scope tuned up. Thanks again.
