81 Per Wiki, on ruffs:

The ruff, which was worn by men, women and children, evolved from the small fabric ruffle at the drawstring neck of the shirt or chemise. Ruffs served as changeable pieces of cloth that could themselves be laundered separately while keeping the wearer's doublet or gown from becoming soiled at the neckline. The stiffness of the garment forced upright posture, and their impracticality led them to become a symbol of wealth and status.

I don't know why, but you reminded me of a story about (I think) Sir Thomas More's daughters. They were sleeping in a trundle bed when one of More's friends came by and said he wanted to marry one of the two.

More took him into the bedroom, where the daughters were sleeping, naked. The friend looked, tapped one of them on the bottom with his cane, and observed her front as she tuned over, then told More that, having seen both sides, she was the one he'd marry.

The big things I've gotten from it is that they didn't wipe out Hatshepsut because she was a woman but because Thutmose III wanted more glory for himself. And the "incestual" marriages were more ceremonial than banging your sister/daughter.

I grew up in the Krispy Kreme region. No Boston guy here I can promise you. Sure KK's can be great hot off the oil. But they are mainly pastry. The best donuts I ever had were made by my mom, at very rare time. They were the old school cake donuts you fried in oil. I like donut with some heft to deal with the coffee. Now we have artisnal shit, which is mainly about the toppings.

I don't disagree, and we are fortunate enough to have more than a couple fantastic mom and pop bakeries/donut shops nearby, but Krispy Kreme does offer the same thing other chain restaurants offer, which is predictability and recognition. First after getting married and thinking "hey let's go out to do something" and realizing it will take another 5-10 minutes for my wife to get ready when I could be ready from naked in bead to walking out the door in less than one minute if I wanted.

The second after having a baby and thinking "hey let's go out to do something" and realizing it will take a half hour to get all the stuff you take with you after you have a kid.

410 There's a famous French novel written in 1678 called 'The Princess of Cleves' - it's thought to be the first genuine novel, and it's set 100 years earlier at the court of Henri II of France. It was filmed with great attention to accuracy in 1961 (I made English fansubs for it) including the costumes. The actress playing the lead character described how just wearing the clothes of the 1580s made you act differently - you could hardly bend at the waist. When she's lying down fully dressed, she's like a doll, unable to move; when she gets up, a servant has to put her shoes on for her. And the stiff ruff that she wore for hours left actual grooves in the skin of her neck! It sounded excruciating. And then imagine wearing all that stuff in the summer when it was hot, to boot.

434 There's a famous French novel written in 1678 called 'The Princess of Cleves' - it's thought to be the first genuine novel, and it's set 100 years earlier at the court of Henri II of France.
Posted by: Dr. Mabuse at March 24, 2021 10:50 AM (+CYtv)

I have a bizarre interest in historical costuming and one of the common refrains from that community is that historical clothing actually wasn't bad. Corsets and stays might impede mobility a small amount, but generally not enough to cause problems, and that heat wasn't too bad, since natural materials breathe better and are lighter in summer.

435 Lucille Ball told a similar story. 1940, the then struggling 29-year old was brought in to see one of the big-wigs at MGM (I forget which). Once she was alone, he walked out from behind the desk, walked right in front of her, dropped his pants and simply said "Suck it!". Which she did because it was understood that's what it took to get a studio contract.

I try to be fair, at least at times. When it comes to cultural differences, I do try to be fair. The line I always heard was Euros thought Americans wanted to smell like soap. The Euros had no issue with the aroma of the human body. It is a fine line, but of course as an American, I go with the soap. Hell, to be honest, I know people who bitched about the Brits. I never noticed that, but it is a cultural difference. Many from the Continent. think we shower unnecessarily.

The bill mandates a breathtaking $100 billion increase in IRS funding over the next ten years.

Even with a massive increase for 2021, the IRS annual budget is just over a tenth of that figure, at $11.92 billion. Warren also seeks to mandate a greater number of annual audits for this engorged IRS to conduct: Each year, one third of those covered would be audited, on everything from cars to art. Such calculations would require establishing not just their purchase price but their current market value.

513 For some reason I think Barbara Bosson, Steven Bochco's ex and the captain's ex-wife on Hill Street Blues, has really appealing lips and teeth. . . .

Ugh.....if that's the case, I missed it as I couldn't get past her horrible hair.......

I don't think anyone played the annoying ex more convincingly than Fay Furillo.

516 I never took note of that when I read Princesse, nor have I seen the movie but I will definitely look that up. Enjoyed your comment.

The movie is very beautiful - script was by Jean Cocteau, adapted from the novel, and Jean Marais played the Prince. The movie was almost immediately attacked by the New Wave scruffians as being too classical and beautiful, so it didn't do well.

So did we. '70s, too.

518 Yeah, RUPAR is a shamed journalist. If you say R U Possibly Retarded, you must be doxxed, cancelled, and hopefully beaten or murdered. Your violent rhetoric will not be tolerated by kind and loving people like us.

519 > I loved that gap toothed smile of hers.

That's called a "diastemma", and in many cultures it's considered a sign that the person having it is sexually charged.

That belief is found in cultures as diverse as late medieval England (Chaucer's "gap-toothed wife of Bath") and Ghana and Nigeria (where it's considered so sexy that some people have dental surgery to create one artificially).

Furillo was into the cuckery, I think. Gets rid of a Bitch Queen wife, immediately hooks up with a Bitch Queen lawyer.

I always loved Sopapillas in New Mexico. Tried to order them in Mexican
restaurant in Texas once and they asked me WTF were Sopapillas?

Posted by: Xipe Totec at March 24, 2021 11:09 AM (o2MD2)

you went to the wrong place. I will admit they are bigger in New Mexico. but I promise you Texans love them. Then thing about these local foods is even in the area, most places suck. I will never forget when I met a guy in Texas who was legit. He gave me a card to show at his restaurant and for real, it was the best i have ever had. To be fair, I think i can make most of that Tex Mex pretty damn well, but it has been so many years under the bridge. But my point is the really great places are rare on the ground, it is just the way thinks work.

522 try getting really good fish and chips in London. There are places that will change your world, but you have to look out for them. Same with Italy, if you are outside the Vatican, the chances of getting a great meal are slim. When in doubt, look for the most uninviting place you can find. If they have no menus outside translated into many languages, that is a good start. Another tip is to ignore the tourist crowds. Walk a few blocks away and go where the locals eat.

not that you asked, but that is advice i earned well and I am happy to share it.

523 Boston's Museum of Fine Arts has the original (https://tinyurl.com/39ztwvz5). I see him as foolish, in large part because he strongly resembles someone I once knew who was total doper and airhead.

But she's cute and probably fun and will likely become pretty chunky as the menagerie of kids she'll have gets larger, but a good person to know. She thinks he'll manage her dowry well enough, but that's to be seen. Maybe, maybe not.

524 And just to add to the above, in a 1969
book on the Museum of Fine Arts, Perry Rathbone (MFA director at the time) wrote about this
painting, "This beautiful painting makes it clear why Jacob Jordaens
became the popular successor as a portrait painter in Antwerp of Rubens
and Van Dyck, his older and more famous contemporaries. As Rubens'
assistant, Jordaens had ample opportunity to study with the master.
Indeed, it may be taken as a compliment to this Double
Portrait that it was long considered the work of Rubens
himself. Direct in conception and full of vitality in its
portrayal of two personalities... This young
couple in their personal pride, self-possession, and their patent
alluence symbolize the establishment of a powerful bourgeoisie in the
Netherlands at the time."
