What does a death in Louisville, KY have to do with left coast cities? The justification to act like feral savages of course!!

Major cities on the West Coast were among those seeing riots and protests Saturday night as demonstrators marked the one-year anniversary of Breonna Taylor’s death in a police raid in Louisville, Kentucky.

Several U.S. cities were beset by riots and protests on Saturday night as demonstrators marked the one-year anniversary of the death of Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky.

Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle saw protests and clashes between crowds of people and police. Rioters threw rocks at police officers in Hollywood and smashed store windows, according to reports and footage published from the scene.

Videos showed riot police at the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street. A video uploaded to Twitter showed a demonstrator appearing to jump on a police car as it drove away.

A man's home is his castle, unless you are in Scotland.

The Bill, which passed what passes for a parliament on Thursday, is weaker than the one introduced but it is no less sinister. It is an authoritarian smash-and-grab on freedom of speech, extending the power of the state to regulate and punish expression far beyond consensus functions such as maintaining public order and deterring incitement to violence.

The legislation creates a sweeping new offence of ‘stirring up hatred’. Liable for prosecution will be anyone who ‘behaves in a manner that a reasonable person would consider to be threatening, abusive or insulting’ — or communicates such material — if he or she ‘intends to stir up hatred against a group of persons based on the group being defined by reference to race, colour, nationality (including citizenship), or ethnic or national origins’, or if ‘a reasonable person would consider the behaviour or the communication of the material to be likely to result in hatred being stirred up against such a group’.

The following is for managers who have to approve expense reports.

A local Toronto restaurant is making things easier for those looking to expense lunch by naming various menu items after office supplies.

Good Fortune Burger has begun offering #RECEATS, their renamed menu items disguised as a number of common office tools. Their Fortune Burger has become the Basic Steel Stapler and Parm Fries are also known as CPU Wireless Mouse.

Here's the menu.

My President raises money for rescue dogs. Unlike the current resident of the White House who has an attack dog.

Donald Trump has used a surprise appearance at a Mar-a-Largo dog rescue fundraiser to proclaim that his daughter-in-law Lara Trump will run for senate.

The former president delighted attendees at the event - held Friday night for Big Dog Ranch Rescue - as he took to the stage for an impromptu speech, which was shared to Twitter by journalist T.A. Walker.

'I didn't exactly prepare for this, but I was walking by, and I heard everyone screaming,' Trump was seen telling the crowd as they broke into rapturous applause.

Sure, sure. Blame it the Mrs.

A vicar has become an online sensation after a Zoom filter blunder accidentally turned him into one of the Blues Brothers during a live-streamed church service. Reverend Vaughan Roberts, 62, proved he really is on a Mission from God after the mishap left him resembling Joliet Jake Blues from the hit 1980 movie. Footage shows Rev Roberts welcoming the online congregation at St Mary’s Church, Warwick, wearing a black fedora hat and sunglasses on his face. The video has been viewed thousands of times online, but Rev Roberts managed to see the funny side.

Imagine seeing this on a stroll. Pretty awesome. H/T Hrothgar
There are only so many polite words that come to mind when one spots a ship apparently hovering above the ocean during a stroll along the English coastline.

David Morris, who captured the extraordinary sight on camera, declared himself “stunned” when he noticed a giant tanker floating above the water as he looked out to sea from a hamlet near Falmouth in Cornwall.

The effect is an example of an optical illusion known as a superior mirage. Such illusions are reasonably common in the Arctic but can also happen in UK winters when the atmospheric conditions are right, though they are very rare.

'To paraphrase Harry Truman, if you want a friend in politics, get a dog.'

We’ve all heard the phrase “rats jumping off a sinking ship.” But it’s rare we get a chance to watch the action in real time. As Cuomo’s death march to political oblivion gains steam, a plethora of high ranking aides, many female, are still getting paid but are not bothering to show up for work. And they’re not hiding the fact, but leaking it to friendly media. They don’t want to get splattered with the gore of Cuomo’s final days in office and are acting accordingly.

Let us take a look at the following. Currently slobbering, sun-setting, paste eating Uncle Joe Biden is the current White House resident. We all know that Kamala "The San Francisco Headhunter" is next in line to move in. So just why oh why is Meghan Markle making 2024 waves?

If you are going to grift, go big or stay home. I'm surprised she isn't leading Bill Kristol around by a leash.

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, is reportedly “networking” with top leaders of the Democratic Party and mulling a run for U.S. president in 2024.

The report, which came in the Daily Mail, cites an unnamed British Labour Party official.

“The Blairite, internationalist and Democratic party networks are buzzing with talk about Meghan’s political ambitions and potential backers,” the anonymous source told the U.K. paper.

“During the US election last year they levelled a thinly veiled attack on Donald Trump by urging voters to ‘reject hate speech,’ which a spokesperson for the couple described as ‘a call for decency.’ Trump himself declared that he was ‘not a fan’ of Meghan, 39,” said the paper.

Bring it Bitch.

My friend and fellow cob CBD had an interesting thread earlier today entitled 'Feelings Over Facts Have Helped Get Us Where We Are Today'

It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart you are. If it doesn't agree with experiment, it's wrong.-- Richard P. Feynman

Remember when anti-gun activist David Hogg woke up one day and decided to start a pillow company to keep up with Mike Lindell’s popular MyPillow because Lindell supports Trump?

Or did you forget all about it?

If so, I’m sure you’re not alone.

Watching Hogg try to launch his pillow company, called Good Pillow, was like being forced to watch a train wreck, as his public pleas for ideas and suggestions felt more like desperate cries for help than legitimate crowdsourcing. Yet the patheticness of it all didn’t matter to the media. As PJM’s Megan Fox reported last month, Hogg’s pillow company, despite being in the embryonic stage of development, (they didn’t even have a logo yet) was getting free publicity from the Washington Post.

In fact, Hogg’s partner made a public appeal for a “top tier” graphic designer to design the company’s logo for a mere $200 and in less than two hours for WaPo’s forthcoming feature story, which was published February 9.

Not wearing a mask and the philosophy of "piss on it", earns a Genius Award Winner.

A Colorado man accused of disrupting an Alaska Airlines flight from Seattle to Denver by refusing to wear a mask and then standing up and urinating in the cabin faces a federal charge of interfering with a flight crew and attendants that carries a maximum term of 20 years in prison and a possible $250,000 fine.

The FBI arrested 24-year-old Landon Grier of Canon City after the flight landed March 9, according to an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in Denver.

25 I think of Quincy Jones as a producer and forget he was a musician/composer. I watched "In Cold Blood" (1967) the other day and he wrote a terrific score -- jazzy, jangly, and occasionally creepy.

The killers were played by Robert Blake and Scott Wilson. Wilson was smooth-talking ex-con Dick Hickock and I thought "Why is he so familiar?" Well he recently played deeply moral Herschel Greene on "The Walking Dead".

30 Regarding the Springfield Metro new police vehicle. Good luck coppers. I have been trying to buy a side by side (utv) for the last several weeks. Frustrated but that's a different post. Even souped up that rigs top speed probably doesn't exceed 40 mph. Side by sides are designed for work first. Good torque but not going to win many speed races. Wonder if the police will relate how many times a kid on a 125cc dirt bike flips them the bird and leaves them in the dust.

66 In West Virginia side by sides and 4-wheelers are commonly found on the roads. Either the operator has lost their license (DUI, mostly) or doesn't have a real vehicle. In the county where we have our cabin they're legal providing they can be operated at the speed limit, have lights, seatbelts and do not require a plate.

Most of the time we see them on back roads/trails but sometimes they're out on the main drag... which is a 2-lane 55MPH road through some pretty backwoods area.

122 The effect is an example of an optical illusion known as a superior mirage. Such illusions are reasonably common in the Arctic but can also happen in UK winters when the atmospheric conditions are right, though they are very rare.

I learned a lot about different kinds of mirages when having an argument with a close family friend about the Columbia shuttle disaster. You see, we were both outside that morning in 2003 to watch the shuttle fly over the MS coast on its way to landing at Cape Canaveral. It never made it, as it broke up over northeastern TX/LA.

He claims he saw it break up from his front yard with his naked eyes; I saw nothing. When it began to break up, it was at about 240,000 feet and about 700 miles from here. I contended that there was no way he could clearly see the event unless there was a mirage of it, which didn't appear from my viewpoint 15 miles from his house. Oh well.

Which is interesting. The seasonal flu killed 30K people in 2018. While I think it is clear the Wuhan Flu death numbers have been goosed, let's supposed its really 300K deaths or 10X the season flu of 2018. If say 140 people died from the flu vaccine in 2018 the vaccine would have been banned.

221 I suggest no one can join the army unless they can do 5 consecutive pullups. This will disqualify a lot of women. A lot of current active duty women. I want to steer 180 degrees from the bullshit into lunatic reactionary, and I will tell you why.

When conservatives win, the politician artfully try to avoid offending liberals and conservatives. When liberals win, the politician offends conservatives, robs them, and bends over backwards for the cause de jeur. We will only ever be pulled leftward. We might go more slowly, but always left.

Fuck you 180. 5 pullups.
Fuck you 180. No abortion clinics within 5 miles of a residence. Not even my issue, just fuck you.
Fuck you 180. No state deductions on federal tax. Fuck you, thief.

The new federalism is going to make my mayor more important than my governor, and my governor more important than my president. The US had a good run, but its days of spreading freedom and scientific breakthroughs are behind it. The crumbling country and diffusion of power is antithetical to the Asimov / Star Trek idea of progress, but they were wrong.

I would have liked to have seen the Space Force, but lets be real.

225 @Ladyl - I'm not opposed to a Christian school. We're Episcopalians so I doubt the Catholics would want her.

Also, she applied at schools that can afford a good bit of financial aid. They're the Harvards and Yales of boarding schools, so it was never a gimmie, but (odd as it sounds) we can't afford a 2nd tier school because they don't offer enough aid.

I'm letting her sit with it for a week or so and then I'll ask her if she wants to apply next year.

314 225 @Ladyl - I'm not opposed to a Christian school. We're Episcopalians so I doubt the Catholics would want her.

Catholic schools around my AO have many non-Catholics as students.
LCD was a cradle Catholic and went to a local K-8 Catholic school. Both wife and I participated in activities. It was expected you would donate 40 hours per year, per parent. Or pay a lot, lot more in tuition.
They want parents that are active in the running of the school, like sports coaches, pickup/dropoff traffic people, assistants for activities, etc. Most Catholic schools have but a fraction of resources to operate, and look for parents to offer sweat equity in addition to the tuition.

All things that dramatically increase the difficulty the powers that be would have tracking everything and/or cancelling inconvenient dissidents.

413 Well I got the big wet snowfall I was praying for to give the pasture a boost, and especially the strip where I spread some grass seed in anticipation of a big wet snow to give it start. Kudos to our utility. We had 2 30 minute outages on Saturday and a 2-3 hour outage today. Given the conditions they did very well to restore power so quickly each time. I think I heard 24 inches at the airport. We probably got the same, we are pretty close. Saturday we got snow with no wind and a lot of it melted as it fell so we don't have 24 inches on the ground except where the blizzard winds drifted snow extra deep.

Bob@NSA p0wns everything. The NSA has taps in all the major communication hubs. This was discovered some years ago with the telephone network. The NSA had it's own facilities right in the huge PSTN major hubs where they tapped right in.

Same with all the major internet traffic. It all gets mirrored to Bob. The data stream I send back and forth when I post here gets mirrored to Bob, stored in that Death Star. You can count on it.

Here's how Bob operates (this goes back to WWII intel practive). They put moles in all the telecom companies. The job of these moles is to put backdoors in everything. **Everything**. When you look at standard map, you're seeing the common Mercator Projection.

The Earth is a sphere to a first approximation, and an oblate spheroid to a better approximation. It has postive intrinsic curvature, which means it can't be projected to a flat surface without distortion.

The Mercator is also Racist and White Supremacist according to the current Woke theology, 'cause it makes Africa look small and Europe and North America look bigger, thus marginalizing the oppressed peoples.

That aside, the Mercator has the advantage of preserving local angles, which is a good thing for navigation.

Anyway, when you have a surface with true curvature, there's no way to project it onto a flap plane without some sort of distortion. You pick which distortion you want.

The Intel bunch honed their skills during WWII and the Cold War. They became masters of deception. Of mis- and disinformation. Lying so well that you don't believe the truth when you hear it.

They originally just used that against our foreign enemies. Now, over the past few decades they've turned internally against our own citizenry. I think that is inevitable.

Another interesting thing about curvature, and this is local curvature -- hilly land with lots of hills and valleys.

Legally, the area of such a parcel is defined as the are of the flat plane projection of it. Take a square. Now imagine it on a piece of fabric. Take your fingers and poke it around, making little hills and valleys. You can see that will change the actual true surface area.

But such is very hard to calculate. It could be done very easily with modern tech and very accurate measuring. But the math is very complex.

So, legally the area is still defined at that of a square. I got to thinking about this years ago and asked my surveyor cousin. He explained, yep, the legal acreage is always the flat plane projection.

All of us who have been taking our privacy and security serious have NOT been wasting our efforts: the weak link in the data collection chain is Big Tech -- the data for the "Central Scrutiniser" is coming from Big Tech...

Our (some of us, anyway) efforts to throttle the data that they hoover up (with firewalls, OS mods, VPNs, encryption, etc.) actually does limit what they get... So all is not lost... Sure, the alphabet men can closely surveil some of us quite closely, but they can't get everything except through the existing Big Tech infrastructure... I think...

According to Snowden, Bob@NSA p0wns all the major VPNs. They can get the plain text from those quite easily. Now, IIRC, the problem is the *implementation* of some of the encryption routines the major commercial VPNs use (and this may be due to those moles...), and not the actual algorithms.

If you look at the history of breaking the Enigma, it was German sloppiness in the execution -- the operators tended to do things that compromised the randomness and all that.

That's apparently what's going on with the commercial VPNs.

I'm trying to find an article I read on "PRISM" one of the systems Snowden described. It was a foreign press article, maybe Der Spiegel (you want find the domestic press ever talking about this too much).

IIRC, it worked like this. If they get interested in you, they just basically enter your name in the PRISM system. It then scours everything they've collected (and the Big Tech cloud data servers are the beck and call of PRISM). Then, they start drilling into you.

The thing is, the Death Star in Utah just Hoovers up all this data and stores it. They can go back and retrieve data streams you've transmitted in the past and start working on them if they desire.

Now, if there's some law that says Bob can't look at you 'cause you're a US citizen, no problem. Bob just asks his buddy at the Brit's GCHQ or the Aussie equivalent, liaisons of which are stationed right there in the cubicles next to him to take a look. I was just reading some stuff about Snowden's revelations. Bob's minions are sitting at desk in their cubicles or whatever. They have software, called some Unified Targeting Tool or something like that.

They enter your name, or e-mail address, or phone number, or bank account number, or any combination of them. The system then scours the database (which is fucking huge). Everything you've done is now available. All your emails, phone conversations, etc, etc.

They can pull all that up. The problem was and still is storage capacity. They get so much damn data, they have to throw it away after so long to make room for the new stuff. 1.7 billion emails per day was some figure cited.

As of 2010, they stored everything for about 30 days. Every fucking thing. They keep the interesting stuff for longer. With the addition of the Death Star and other improvements, that time is probably much greater now.

But every fucking thing you're done electronically, interent and telephone (and banking records) are right there for Bob's minions to peruse.

Some guy has a daughter. They've got CVS cards, and CVS knows the daughter from the wife from the husband. Daughter starts getting ads from CVS about pregnancy and baby shit. He's outraged. Why are you sending this crap to my daughter.

Well, turned out dear daughter had indeed gotten herself knocked up. CVS's statistical analysis of her purchase patterns determined there was an 80% she was preggers.

557 If SC ever legalizes marijuana, I bet CVS will reconsider

Posted by: Miklos, trending at March 15, 2021 03:10 AM (QzkSJ)

I personally doubt that. They made their choice and for some reason they thought people would care. Sure you might be right about pot as it is obviously not habit forming, not addictive, and really healthy when you think about it. I would have guessed SC would never legalize pot, but then again I thought the same of many other places. I used to think VA would be the absolutely last place to do it, and so far I don't think they have per se. But legalization is very over rated.

A few years ago I attended a FBI cyber security talk. The agent talked about being on the lookout for foreign nationals or criminal organizations trying to become employees to gain access to your systems to do nefarious activities. Someone asked if the feds do the same thing. Agent basically looked at his watch and said, oh look at the time and left.

559 I am not sure why that term rings so strongly with so many Americans. It
is decriminalization that really matters. Pot is rampant because you
can't get into trouble for using it unless you do something wrong. All
legalization does is let the government get the biggest cut.

pot is not legal in Amsterdam. At least it wasn't a few years ago. People are shocked by that fact, but it is only because they don't know what the term means.

DNS = domain name system. Everything has a numerica IP address. Think of it as a phone number. ace.mu.nu is 216.18.211.179. That's a 32 bit number represented in octets.

But, you don't want to have to try to remember all those IP addresses. It would be impossible. So the DNS system was created to allow you to associate a friendly name (ace.mu.nu or boobsnbutts.com) to the actual numeric address.

When you access a website (or send an email or anything), your system has to resolve the name. It sends a query to the DNS system to do that.

The gist of it is, when you visit a website, your cable company can see what you connect to since your using its 'phonebook' to look up the connections, so don't do that if you think the scumbags are collecting and selling your data!

last time I had it was in Amsterdam (then again, it might have been lost in a boating accident). That was the previous century mind you, so I guess you know how much it means to me. But anyway, for sure it was readily available. But it was not technically legal. The Euros are smart, they leave open the option to bush you if you act like a jagoff. Americans want something to be legal or not legal, period. The end result is the government takes over the industry.

579 Finally I think people will react reasonably and see that if doing all we're told by the spokes folks for the loudest minority groups and then told it's not enough or that we're still racist then why do anything at all?People will always try and placate a reasonable complaint after deciding it's very likely. And this is the reaction we've had for 70 years. But people expect to at least have their efforts acknowledged and resolved for the future. Not a never ending demand for compensation. It's what happens to blackmailers (pun intended) when they continue to make demands after the first ones are met; the demands are rejected and in some cases the blackmailer is turned over to the authorities.

We can't do that but we can definitely refuse any further acquiescence to their demands. I believe we're entering this phase and all these groups are going to get be very very surprised at the reactions and results.

586 Yeah. You can choose the DNS server but the request comes thru your ISP. You are always connected to your ISP. Always.Even if you're in privacy mode or some other contrivance, the ISP knows who's making that request and any conversation between you and the outside goes thru their server. They may only know the address but that's sufficient to then eavesdrop on. Normally only the address requested is logged so they don't have trillions of digits of everyone of your conversations but they do know what address you were talking to.

The internet was never designed for privacy. In fact just the opposite it was made so that a conversation could be reconstructed if necessary or at least the addresses accessed and the time.

590 >> . If I use a different DNS, will that DNS be used on all the devices in my house?

Depends on how everything is configured. You can set an individual machine to use a particular DNS server. You can tell your router to do so as well.

A typical default home router setup usually has the router as the DHCP server which gives the machines the DNS server to use. You can program the router to use a different one, and it will then direct all your machines to that one.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at March 15, 2021 03:49 AM (Mzdiz)

591 Each device can be configured (if the software allows) to use a different DNS server.Think of the DNS as a list that converts the alphanumeric name you send into a digital internet address and returns that to your browser. The browser then uses that address to request a page from that server thru your ISP.

634 The Importance Of Facial Structure On Perceived 'The Happiness/Grumpiness Matrix' --

My latest work on understanding the world. You all have heard the term 'resting bitch face' by now. And it is a real thing. You look at a person's face for the first time, and draw immediate conclusions. Valid or not, they are a guidance factor. Guess what -- There are people with 'resting happy person' faces too. They might be thinking about ripping your tonsils out with their teeth, but their facial structure radiates happiness.

So. What does this mean? Don't judge a book by its cover, perhaps. Actions, not appearances seems an obvious other conclusion.

This not be exactly correlated but I have dealt with this at times. So I am calling a help line for some company of this sort or that. I am not hard to get along it, the opposite is true if I can truly judge myself. But sometimes you hear a certain voice, a certain attitude, and then see the premonition is correct. When you find someone you absolutely know you will get nowhere with, you say goodbye, and move on.

sometimes you really can tell a book by its cover. There is a point when
dealing with someone when you can flesh out whether further interaction
will be fruitful or a waste of time for all involved. What I don't
respect is people that get into arguments with people they know will
never get them where they want to be. The second I realize further
conversation will be a waste of time, I will end it amicably.

Most people are right handed. A handshake is proof you ain't holding a weapon.

Again -- Appearances matter.

640 In the old South, there is a line about how you "can't get there from here" There are times when a cognoscente person realizes further interaction is a simple waste of time. It is not judging a book by its cover, but judging reality after you have read a few pages.

641 Posted by: GnuBreed at March 15, 2021 06:00 AM (F0YaR)
salutes started the same way. They were a way to say you were unarmed. Also they were a sign of respect. The right handed thing I can't get to into. The reality is most people are right handed. If you are left handed, maybe that bothers you or maybe you think it makes you special and you can use it in some way.
In many cultures offering a left hand has many negative connotations outside or which hand you are more dexterous with. A weak ass fish hand always means bad things. And the one who offers is must realize he made the worst impression you can make.
