The Outer Limits Of The ONT

Good evening Horde. There is nothing wrong with your computer. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling content. For the next eight hours we will control all that you see and hear. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to the outer limits.

The paired skywalks work like a trombone slide. Keeps the pedestrian connection intact and in some form of "workable", even if the buildings are swaying in the wind, as pictured.

And though I used to rappel off of skyscrapers for a living, I'm not walking that skywalk when the wind is blowing like that. Fatigue life and failure in materials is a real thing, and that assemblage is working and flexing like mad. Stress riser uber alles!

My guess is that the first one was not in the exact spot that regulations specify - wrong distance from the curb, or a mm too low or something.

So they got his call, and asked themselves "what the f--- are we supposed to do if people don't wanna stop?" Then a supervisor told them to make sure it met state regs, and fix it if it didn't. They sent a crew out, and you first install a new one (wait for concrete to harden,) and then remove the old one.

I suspect there is going to be a lot of this during COVID. Teachers can't hold entire years back without creating a chokepoint, and if Little Precious is held back a few school board members may find they have to pretend they are gonna get tough with teachers to win their election. And teachers may face losing their hero status as well, so everyone gets advanced and some kids can look forward to hoping the minimum wage increases because that is all they are ever going to earn.

But hey, OrangeManBad is not tweeting, so win for the union!

205 I am going to go against the general opinion here at AoS, ONT.

A 1966 Mustang might be "fun" to drive occassionally, but I know from some experience that maintaining an "old " car (50 years old) can be a lot of work, a chore, and not always a labor of love. It gets old after a while.

An Audi S5 (new) would probably be a real scream to drive. Faster and handles better than that Mustang.

'66 Mustang GT might have been great...50 years ago, but that ain't a classic Ferrari. It's a Ford that is 50 years old.

Ah, one of a zillion films I've never seen. Republic of Korea SWAT and SF teams were videoed extensively practicing the technique before the Seoul Olympics. Fortunately, they never had to employ it in action.

Alas, I never got to practice it in a weaponry training environment. Just some construction guys pushing the envelope of the commercial equipment for a laugh. No practical application, actually, UNLESS .mil or L.E. tactics to follow.

yes to everything you said, Bozo, but the value of the 'Stang is going up, up, up, while that Audi is going to be worth half in 3 years.

I have a friend who has a '68 fastback that completely rebuilt everything, engine puts out some ridiculous horsepower, 4 speed, and completely new modern suspension and disc brakes all around.

Cost him about $30k, handles close to that Audi, and he has turned down offers of $50k a couple of times. And it looks like an original '68, until you look close at the wheels and see the discs.

Closest I came to "litter" while on-rappel was dropping the wrapper from my lunchtime sammich. *rimshot. More seriously though, we did actively practice rescuing co-workers, both from rappelling rigs and swing stages.

Swing stages have far greater failure rates than any rappelling rig. But you can get more work done, faster, from a swing stage. Guess which most contractors choose? One thing I was very, VERY good at, was in setting up the rigging on all this gear. And not once, did I ever go over the parapet on gear I had not rigged, myself. (except when first learning the craft, and never thereafter.) Folks, let me tellya. 400 ft. of paired 1/2" nylon/Kevlar lines, weighs a bit more than you'd think. Don't stand anywhere near the vertical lines when they're on a building in your area. That spliced eye with the galvanized or stainless thimble in the middle, *can* easily kill whoever it hits after it falls.

Like a BMW driver turning left over a double yellow line directly in front of me as I was going 40+ mph, locking up my brakes, and getting flipped off as he miraculously scoots out of the way with seemingly inches until the crash.

281 It wasn't the "best" car I ever owned, (it was a POS, actually), but the '78 BMW 320i I owned for about a year (1988ish), with it's four-speed manual (they didn't have the 5 speed yet), was the most FUN car I've ever owned.

Back when they were manually cranked windows, no "safety" stuff other than 3point belts, but the engineering for brakes, suspension and steering was absolutely top notch. A human-drivable slot-car if ever one was. Pity, Mr. Head Gasket said "goodbye", and after the repair, it was an oil-burner of near diesel proportions. It's death was me watching a piston and connecting rod bouncing behind the car via the rear-view mirror. Hole in the side of the block you could serve a 2 liter soda bottle through. That's when I knew, that car would go to the breakers and not the garage.

Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at March 12, 2021 11:26 PM (sy5kK)

A litter rappel is where you put the patient in a litter (well strapped in) and one person on either side rappels down the cliff holding the litter with one hand and his own rope with the other hand. The trick is keeping the patient from banging into the cliff while you go down. Level and horizontal is bonus points.

303 Buddy rappel is another one. You strap the casualty on the rapeller's back and the rapeller controls the descent of both of them down the cliff.

But the most fun is fast rope. It's about a 4 inch rope that hangs from the helicopter door, and you put your insteps on it and your gloved hands and slide down like the Batpole. The when you get to the ground, get the hell out of the way because someone else is coming down right on top of you. The idea is to clear the helicopter in a few seconds.

A fast rope accident (end of the rope was about 10 feet off the ground, then another soldier landed on top of the first one down) was how the injury happened that started the whole debacle in Mogadishu.

358 The only car I had which was tangential to the Muscle Car era, was a '74 Plymouth Sebring Satellite. With the 318 V-8, "fire-breathing" is was NOT.

That said, it's roll-on acceleration when floored at speeds from 40mph and above, was immediate and frightening. Mopar suspension and over-powered power steering, makes for a twitchy, twitchy car. But from the line, or a 20mph floorboarding.. it was just a straight up lazy ass dog. I sold it because it's AC problems just couldn't be cured, which in San Antonio in the summer, just ain't right.

By the 1960's, drum brakes were not crude. They were at their peak of development. Self energizing and self adjusting, and powerful enough to lock up all four wheels on any car with which they were fitted. Their greatest weakness was not having the heat dissipation capacity for repeated high-effort stops.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 13, 2021 12:19 AM (mzC78)

362 Maybe some iterations of muscle cars had crude drum brakes, but most of them were real big with a lot of friction area, and had cooling fins. Other than the first application after a drenching, or long runs on a road racing circuit, the braking power available was equal to the disc brakes of the time. Suspension? Many people let all the rubber parts go to hell and never replaced them, and that in itself is where the bad reputation of American sedan handling comes from. A brand new Pontiac GTO handled competitively with a brand new Ferrari GTO. Those were unequal length A arms with coil springs and separate shocks. There is nothing wrong with that system, if you didn't buy one that was about 2/3 worn out already -- which we did, of course, and never spent a dollar to restore.

Bias ply tires? The manufacturers' showroom original equipment kept getting cheaper, but there were tires available from any tire shop that were perfectly capable of handling what was dealt them. It was not the laying of the plies that caused the issues.

385 I should say the usual thing I say about the 1960's Outer Limits (never seen the revival).

The 1960's Outer Limits was the greatest 30-minute anthology show ever.

It's a pity they made the episodes an hour long. Most of the stories were stretched mercilessly. You should have heard the screaming. The famous episode "The Zanti Misfits" is so over long it's actually boring.

"Corpus Earthling," on the other hand, is one of the most terrifying things ever shown on television. Even the producers didn't want to air it.

That is the last year before they started making cars modern. It is FUN to work on. There's plenty of space to get at everything and you can see all the fasteners and don't have to stand on your head with six wobble joint extensions. It really makes you think modern cars took a serious wrong turn. And most of the awful handling you may remember comes from the old bias tires. I have stock size radial white walls on it and it really doesn't handle much worse than the 03 Town Car. Just fine for non racecar driving.

397 Suspensions have to be matched with the kind of tires that are on there. I got a Studebaker station wagon once with "moderately priced" radials, and it was just OK. Kind of sloppy handling actually, and I figured we would have to freshen everything up. One day I was on other business in a nice old fashioned tire shop, and the guy had some retreaded bias ply snow tires in the original size. I expressed an interest and he practically gave them to me. What a difference. It was just set up for that profile, and everything was better. The deep tread made it look like an off-roader, too: people would often ask if it was 4WD.

That car weighed 3880 pounds, which seemed like a lot when I got the weight slip, but it was full-framed, and compared to other wagons that's not really much. We sure enjoyed it.

"Jeepers" drive and operate the (usually) quite capable, four-wheel-drive off road vehicles made under the Jeep brand, but also several other manufacturers vehicles fit into the "Jeep" mold, in terms of format and function.

"Hot Rodders" are some variation within the umbrella of Muscle Cars, Hot Rods, Rat Rods, Drag Racers, Street Racers and such. Mostly centered on 50s/60s/70s two door mid-size platforms, with engines larger than necessary for basic auto locomotion, but essential for neck-snapping acceleration and high top speeds.

Generally, a space between the big toe and the remaining toes is indicative of a dog hello mental disability.

It is quite commonly seen in people with Down syndrome - if a baby is born with that space (as well as other physical anomalies), it indicates to the doctor that further testing needs to be done.

My father I got a load of gravel in one of our farm trucks back in the '90s. These trucks, f-700 class, are about 10 ton load, 15 ton or so gross, and that's a bit overloaded.

I pulled up under the crusher and boom! My father had told the operator to be careful. He wasn't. That poor truck, and thank God for the reinforced frame and overload springs. I don't know how much it had on it, I would be afraid to know.

We crept back home the back roads, and I never got out of 3rd gear, lo range on the axles. The whole time my butthole was drawn up tight enough to pinch off a hardened steel bolt. The dump wouldn't work, too much weight, and we had to shovel. The front end loader helped once we got the little tailgate out, but I shoveled a lot.

Mom has been uneasy about the dark outside for a while. It's bizarre tho that sometimes she will get up at night and not turn in her light or the hall light and start to go downstairs. That's when I know she is really "out of it"

And about 5 years ago, when we were driving home at night from my brother's house, she asked me how I knew where I was going because it was so dark. She was actually frightened that I wouldn't know the way. I assumed she was afraid of the dark then but I'm not sure she wasn't just confused.

Wrap beef in foil so it is airtight as possible. I haven't used a bag, but it would do the same thing probably. Bake at 350F until the beef hits 135F in the middle.

If there isn't a lot of fat in the beef, I'll add some oil to help keep it from drying out while it is cooking.

Are you talking about a brisket or a genuine old-fashioned corned beef (the kind that's got about 500 pounds of salt already in it)?

Brisket comes out beautifully in a crockpot. Put it on the six hour setting.

One tip: don't add much, if any, salt until about the last hour. It will be much more tender. Also, don't add potatoes too early or they will disintegrate.

If it's an old-fashioned salted beef, then you definitely don't want to add any salt. Heh.

570 corned beef on the stove is easy: put meat and contents of bag into the pot, cover with good water, if your tap water is nasty. rinse out bag to get all the brine, then add the spice packet ( i add extra pickling spice, just because).

place on lowest burner, and bring to a boil, then neck down to barely simmering. after 3-4 hours, roll over, and cook for a few more hours (duration info on package mins/lb calculation (i know, no math) until fork goes into piece w/o resistance. remove from pot, let drain, tented, and rest, then slice.

crock pot will w*rk, just might not be big enough.

615 I read the Kinzinger sidebar expecting glee at his getting gerrymandered out, but the overall comments and thread contents are depressing Dem drivel - even ones from so called conservatives. I especially like the one about Trump was just going to deliver the vaccines to airports and let everyone figure it out from there. We are surrounded by idiots.

616 This time with people inside it. And by individuals with firearms.

But my local media seems to not want me to know about this chilling armed insurrection. and attempt to usurp power.

626 I need to delve further into that poll report that shows support for our military dropping off.

Seems like the February 2021 responses showed a huge falling off in trust by the citizenry.

One would almost expect our media to be curious about that, yes?

Rest assured, citizens, that our solution will involve creating a new strike force outfitted in snazzy uniforms (spats! Norkian hats!) and armed to the teeth! All to protect YOU, citizen!

633 Americans don't trust military leaders and have not trusted our missions for years now. People I think still want to like garden variety dog faces, that will change as more and more of them get deployed to face the populace.

649 We've taken steps to clarify the role of our police bureau and
expectations for its work. Last June, I announced a 19-point police
reform action plan. Twelve actions are done, and the others are
underway. My colleagues and I redirected millions of dollars from the
police bureau's budget.

Wheller sure says pretty words, mostly about we are on the right track, a few million more dollars from the federal government will fix it. And of course a little tax increase which was approved by the voters is just wonderful.
