How The Sausage Is Made Let me show you the worst headline I've seen in a long time: Dog Thrilled To See Owners At Shelter But They're There To Adopt Different Dog
Did that headline make you mad? It made me mad. Anytime this is posted on social media, the opprobrium is of epic proportions. And why not? There's video (you can see it at the link) of the dog, named after the little girl in It's A Wonderful Life, if you can believe it, excitedly wagging her tail and barking as her old owners stand outside the fence. What kind of a monster would do such a thing, and then la-te-dah casually sashay past the unwanted dog to get a new one? What horrible people! How much better you must be than them. How superior you are to those heartless bastards! I freely admit that I felt the same. Except.... I did a little digging, and it turns out that the couple gave up the dog because they had a baby, and the dog was behaving very aggressively towards the baby. They didn't want to give up the dog, they had to give up the dog. (The Inside Edition story linked briefly alludes to “another pet”, but I've seen other accounts which clearly state that it was a new baby). Now that you know that, the story become heartbreaking rather than outrageous. But heartbreak doesn't garner as many clicks as outrage. The only thing I can question is their decision to go to the same shelter that had the old dog, but I dunno, maybe it was the only one in town. Maybe they just wanted to see Zuzu one last time.

Related: We were talking to Little the other day about the impact of social media on how we see the world, and I was telling him how what's presented by the media isn't necessarily reality, and how social media distorts the fringes of reality. It went something like this:
Suppose you have a kid your age who finds that he has the urge to fuck a toaster. In the past, he'd either keep it to himself and learn to live with it, or, if he mentioned it to someone else, they'd tell him he was crazy and pretty much the same thing would happen. Now, he goes online and finds that there's a whole community dedicated to toaster-fucking. Hell, there's an entire Reddit about it (I have no idea if there is actually a toaster-fucking Reddit). So he starts talking online to toaster-fuckers world wide, and they tell him that it's a wonderful hobby, and completely normal, and that anyone who opposes him is oppressing him. This ability to connect can be a wonderful tool for people who are actually facing oppression, but it also magnifies the fringe, and the deviant and the dangerous. Couple this with a media that wants to celebrate anything that is against traditional Western mores and common sense, and pretty soon you have Congressmen introducing bills that toaster-fuckers are a Constitutionally protected class, and anyone who dares say 'Uh, dude, you shouldn't do that” is ostracized. And so the kid winds up burning his dick off.

Anyway - FYI - on a Q&A today on his website - Mark Steyn basically said no more guest hosting for him on Rush; that he wishes the people well but his loyalty was to Rush himself, and obliquely wonders (as people here have) if talk radio in general can survive post-Rush.
My sense is, he is smart enough to know following Rush is a no win situation...

The anesthesia and surgery went better than expected, he really doesn't have a uvula anymore, and I could tell that his right nostril was bigger than it had been. He says that even with the stents and gauze in, he can breathe better than he could before. The next few days will be a bit miserable with the painkillers, antibiotics and nasal rinses, but we are on the road to recovery!

Now I'm going to get some very much-needed sleep!

We had to get rid of a dog once when my youngest brother was born and the dog was too aggressive. I was told my parents found a family to adopt the dog, and have never asked if that was true or not.
And then it turned out he was allergic to our cats as well (and it turns out that so am I, but we never knew).

I'm just looking out the kitchen window and neighbor across the street is fertilizing his lawn. I see the cutest little pup trotting up the street towards him. I know it's not his dog and I look down the street and see no one so I think.. this is a loose pup. The puppy runs towards him and it dawns on him too.. loose doggeh. So he scoops him up and proceeds to go down the street to find the owners. I had shit to do so I forgot about it for awhile. Luckily a year and a half ago the staff office was moved, but because of what I do I have an office all to myself. Plus some changes that were made during COVID mean I can work 1/2 my hours at home, so I won't have to put up with wearing a mask at work for anything other than getting to and from my office, and maybe to get a drink out of the staff fridge.

When you get a dog, you never know what issues there may be. It's a commitment. New baby time maybe isn't the best time to make that commitment.

I know an employee at a private school in southern Virginia; pretty conservative area and student body, but some of the faculty are total nutjobs. Recently, the guidance counselor launched a "No Place for Hate" group, and she and they put together a written pledge that students would be "invited" to sign, promising not to use a whole range of offensive speech (determined by the counselor, natch). But it was supposed to be voluntary.
Today, they unveiled the pledge during lunch hour, and the counselor and the athletic director effectively ordered the students to sign it. And I don't mean they said, "We want all of you to sign this," they fucking called out by name the students at each table (limited numbers at each because of Covid) and told them to come up and add their names. A few slipped out and managed to hide until it was over, but the majority did, because peer pressure + authority + etc. The handful who didn't go up to sign were then browbeaten by the athletic director until they finally did.

Dogs are strange. Ajax looks at small children as Things to be Herded (he did this to my buddies toddler when they came to visit a while back. Just cautiously worked the kid until he was under an end table, sat down in front of him, looked at me and wagged his tail. Good dog. Sort of? The kid was safe, at least.)
I have heard a few tricks for trying to get dogs to be a bit more sociable with new people, esp skittish ones. Take used clothing (unwashed after they wore it for a day) and put it in the dog bed or crate. Take the kid and the dog on a walk, get it into the dogs head that this is not a foreign invader but a new member of the pack. That kind of thing.

The whipsaw is going to be brutal. Massive inflation of the money supply will cause cash to lose more and more value at first (yeah, it can still lose more). But then once the debt markets (which are much, much larger than the money supply) start to collapse due to defaults on a global scale (which we almost had in 2007) cash will become the most valuable thing on the planet.
That is until people realize it's all fake and start burning it to stay warm.
This will get really ugly before it gets utterly terrifying.

Anyway - FYI - on a Q&A today on his website - Mark Steyn basically said no more guest hosting for him on Rush; that he wishes the people well but his loyalty was to Rush himself, and obliquely wonders (as people here have) if talk radio in general can survive post-Rush.

It's not that talk radio can't survive post-Rush; it's that talk radio will have a difficult time with podcasts, streams, and so forth. I live 600 miles from Houston and I would typically listen to Rush via KTRH on iHeart rather than terrestrial radio. (Back when I first heard Rush when he was on KTSA in San Antonio, you had to know where to find him, and if you went on the road, you'd be screwed unless you wanted to channel hop to find the right station.)

Non instant milk keeps better as long as you keep it dry. I'd repackage it in smaller mylar bags with some of those oxygen removers. You can buy rolls of mylar bags and seal them to any size with an iron.

Clausewitz's "On War" is one of the most heavily cited, but unread books in print. 1984 is much easier reading but I have the feeling that many think they "read it in High School" but really didn't. That is my feeling and I could be wrong.

Correct. Jason only appears for a jump scare at the end of the film, though it is done in a way where it might have been a dream.
And then the sequels made the ending cannon, while having Jason age at an extreme rate between 1 and 2.

I've said it before, but I think the best candidate to sit behind the Golden EIB mic, is none other than Donald Trump Jr. He's got the quick wit, the wide range of knowledge, can be humorous or cutting, as needed, and most importantly he TAKES NO PRISONERS, leaving the opposition diced sliced scattered and fried across battlefields and radioscapes to the full limit of the wattage allowed.
Because he carries the Trump name, he'd instantly generate the Lightning Rod Effect, infuriate the press and leftists, and scare the ever loving shit out of (D)s, from sea to shining sea. Plus, it'd give him a good many years of building up a publicity, persona and (hopefully) Rushian levels of goodwill, should he chose to use the EIB as a base from which to launch a political career. I don't think anyone else would be nearly as "guaranteed" of success, as he.

If you want to disappear for a while, the mountainous part of East TN is an ideal place to do it.
I recently moved back to one of the smaller towns around Knoxville. Not really out in the sticks, but it ain't The Big City either.
Something to keep in mind is that the TN valley has a lot of hydroelectric dams and nuke plants. Means that, provided we can source replacement parts from time to time, we'll have electricity even if the national/global infrastructure starts to come undone. And middle TN (Cumberland plateau) has farms and gun factories.

Amazingly, said staff member has given her 2 week notice in order to focus on her studies, which she has been doing for at least 2 months while holding her job.
Had a meeting with my boss today where the situation came up and *shock* the situation was not as the staff member had claimed. So I am totally sure the staff member really just wanted to focus on her studies while working some other job to pay her bills.

The first 'book' of 'On War' is quite good and readable. The problem is that section was the only part the Clauswitz edited. So the rest of the work is bit of a dog's breakfast. Good stuff in there, but you have to dig at it.

In HS, Brave New World was required, assigned reading for seniors. I read MCMLXXXIV because 1) I was interested and 2) I needed a book of British literature to subject to a critical analysis. If I didn't do it, no Secular Bar Mitzvah for me. BOTH should be read by everyone.

I'd recommend following up with Brave New World Revisited, which Mr. Huxley wrote in response to the speed of technological advances. It was published in 1958 and the whole theme of it was "Brave New World is now closer than I could have ever dared imagine." Had he lived into the 1970s at the very least he would have done another book like it, I'm sure, with the focus being on drugs.

It used to be a 'thing' to reduce strategists to almost parodies and go and call general X "Jominian" versus "Napoleonic" or "Clausewitzian" versus "The Indirect Approach"
As I recall, Clausewitz was strongest when suggesting that politics and war need to be aligned, lest you fight a war without any alignment to your national aims. For some who seem to think it is a sporting event where you hold up numbered cars to score it, this met with a lot of grumbling.

I had a industrial accident and ended up getting a L3-4-5 fusion. It was done under Workmans Comp. Idiot Doc screwed it up and they had to go back in and redo the whole thing from scratch a month later.
I have a lot of experience with the process. Insom has my email address if you can get in touch with him, I would be glad to go into details.
Workmans Comp is a good example of government dictating your health care. It is a nightmare for anything serious. I know that's probably not your problem but I had to throw that out there because they damn near ruined my life.

most sequels suck in my humble and only personal opinion. Sure there are exceptions like The Godfather Part Deux and some say even The Sting Part Deux. But the franchises that I am sure never came close to the originals are Jaws and Rocky. I know many love the many Rocky films. But to me, nothing comes close to the original. It is like when it came to those kinds of sequels, the money men chose the specific thing about the movie that did NOT make the original great. For Jaws they thought it was about the shark. For Rocky, they thought it was about the boxing and training. At least many enjoy the many Rocky films.

I do believe, looking back at my previous relationships, that if both sides wanted to make it work, we could have made it work. The thing that attracted us in the first place is usually enough to keep us going forever. In the past, it just turned out that one of us or both of us decided it wasn't worth the effort to keep going. Luckily - a day at a time - I found someone that I continually find worth the effort to keep going, in spite of our individual baggage.

I had a one-level spinal fusion, L5-S1, almost 20 years ago.
My doc did it anterior, something fairly new at the time.
Prior to my surgery, in addition to the back pain, I was suffering extreme sciatica down my right leg.
Post-surgery, I still had pain for some months (inflammation I was told), after that I felt great!
I still feel 100% which is amazing since I'm 20 years older and continue to work a rather physical job.
And no more sciatica ever since.
And yes, I tried everything prior to my surgery, including acupuncture.

correct - the State's interest is to see that someone is legally responsible for the upbringing of the child, and that person is going to be the legally assigned mother and father of the child at the time of birth. The mother's authenticity is never in question, and the fathers is... irrelevant to the states interests.

read that article - and the problem in the Texas case is pretty obvious. Even though it was erroneous, a Family Court ordered Cornejo to pay child support in 2003. Cornejo then ignored the court order, and now claims he never knew about it.
sad but true fact of life - if there's a court order out against you, it's your job to find out about it and take care of it. Because if you don't, you're gonna get fucked by it sooner or later.

I had a friend who had an outstanding warrant from a county he had never been in, but the bank that had his car loan had a branch located there. He went overseas, left the car in the airport parking lot, was gone several months, missed a few payments, they couldn't repo it, and they swore out a warrant for impairing collateral. When he arrived back in the US, TSA held him in lockup until the county came and picked him up, and he stayed in jail for a while until it all got straightened out.

Under Texas law, anyway. The person who is married to the mother at the time the baby is born is the father. There is a procedure to renounce paternity if someone else can be proven by DNA to be the father and agrees to be the father, but I believe that is pretty rare.

A few years ago, a music minister at our church (also a good friend of mind) was traveling to help some other church about 100 miles north of us. Driving through a county he rarely visits, he was stopped for a minor violation, and they found that he had gotten a similar ticket there 5 years previously, that he had never paid and had forgotten about. Long story short, they carried him to jail and made him stay there until someone from the church drove up with $1200 in cash, which was what they figured the original $80 fine had turned into after 5 years of interest, late fees, and we-got-you-now-HA-HA fees.

That may seem like a distinction without a difference but it isn't. Texas law says if someone says you are the father of a kid and you have actual notice of the alleged fatherhood, then you are on the hook for support until paternity is established by a DNA test.
This guy supposedly was served with papers in 2003 saying he was the father but waited until 2016 to have a paternity test. Thus the big bill, since there was nobody else to tag for the $$$.
All the articles on this case are from 2017 and no other articles after that. There is a YT vid from 2018 that is about this case, so the case was still going on then. I will have to use my PACER-FU to run down the final decision.

Almost every description in a newspaper or on TV I have ever read about or heard about a legal matter has been wrong. And most stories don't have any follow-up to what happened in the final decision. A lot of crazy shit gets decided in the preliminary hearings that happen at the beginning of a case that end up being set aside later once all the evidence is in.
So I would take these wacky paternity cases with a grain o' salt.

i have a French language vhs of Pale Rider. My guess is it is worth nothing. But I still like watching it. But the thing is, why would anyone buy a foreign language movie of an American classic today, when the dvds and likely the net downloads have many language options? Not comporable, but for some reason the VHS discussion reminded me of that.

That looks to be the first season of Ultraman (which is set 2 in Mill Creeks numbering as the lead in series Ultra Q is vol 1) based on the costumes. Haven't watched it in a while so the monster is quite clicking, but a search says it is from the final ep of Ultraman-subsequent series get changes to the name, rather than numbers to differentiate them.

Nice. I found a 1/100 Serpent Custom that I purchased to give a friend for Christmas and forgot about so he got something else. Also have a 1/550 gp03 dendrobium in the same storage box. And there are a ton of the Universal Unit blind boxes in the same box as well. In my defense, I was putting them together before I got diagnosed and treatment changed my assembling plans/ability.

College was comics and movies. My anime surge happened post college (well, I grew up with Battle of the Planets etc. and had recorded Vampire Hunter D and Lensman off SciFi when it first launched). I had only a few VHS tapes (most I got later when TRSI was fire saleing them) but I went hard starting around 2000 and DVD becoming a thing.
Though I do have DVDs of every title you listed (though not all of Cutie Honey, which I will address one of these days). The only posters I have either came with a title or could be sent in for (Vampire Princess Miyu had one from Tokyopop) or came with a magazine I picked up. By my anime period I really stayed away from posters.

But I may have Rei-Rei and O'Genki Clinic on DVD. And they may just be in a DVD folder with other adult titles that is kept away from the other DVD folder I have in sight on my shelves. But there is no witness who could testify to that.

Nope. I "celebrated" on the 6th of this month. 2 years ago today I was still in the hospital, I think the steroid mania was wearing off but the radiation screwing up my sense of taste was starting to take root. Looking at the calendar, two years ago today my boss and the assistant boss happened to be in Madison and they stopped by to visit.

I'm still experiencing something with it, as my taste can be all over the place were one day I love something but a month later it just doesn't taste the same. I have no idea if that is the result of the radiation treatment, is related to mental health, or if it is some other random wild card. I guess it could be related to the thyroid med as well, but I don't recall that being mentioned as a possible side effect.

I have an appointment in early May with my oncologists nurse so I'll be bringing it up. It isn't as bad as the random nerve pain in my jaw which they also don't know where it comes from. Had a CT scan and everything and they couldn't find it. Luckily it is semi rare, cause when it strikes it is a "stop everything for a minute til it passes" experience. Maybe I did bring it up to my Oncologist as we talked about something as she offered to schedule another scan and I passed as I had one in the last 6 months and it isn't fun. Plus I have a reaction to MRI contrast and when it hit I was in the scanner with mask on and thought I was gonna throw up in the mask, and I don't feel like doing that again any time soon.

I just moved both NISA box sets of that onto a more visible shelf this weekend and put the discs into a more accessible DVD folder. I'd forgotten just how many of NISA's CE's I have, and just how inconsistent they were with where they put the titles on the sides of their boxes (or didn't in a few cases).

In my part of the U.S. last year, the local populace lit off every firework ever made. It was glorious! No official fireworks show? No problem. I just pulled up a chair on the back deck at home, lit a cigar and watched the skyline. One of the best 4th of July celebrations I have had! I expect more of the same this year.

The modern world is too complex and interrelated for that to work. Dethroning merit and a broad-based middle class with strivers sidelined will not work. There is no replacing basic mechanisms of human action.
