Auditor: "I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them." Boat Owner: "Well, there's Clarence, my deckhand, he's been with me for 3 years. I pay him $1,000 a week plus free room and board. Then there's the mentally challenged guy. He works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of the work around here. NSFW-Language Is baseball on the verge of a permanent major change? Minor League Baseball Reportedly Experimenting with Robot Umpires The seeds of the robot apocalypse are apparently being sown in Minor League Baseball. Or rather, the minor leagues appear to be one more sector of society where automation is being used to “augment” and then potentially replace human labor. This week, the MLB announced that it plans to “expand testing of the Automatic Ball-Strike System” (ABS) that had previously seen testing by the Atlantic League and the Arizona Fall League, two leagues associated with MLB. In the expansion of testing, “select games in the Low-A Southeast” of the minor leagues will use the systems, NPR reports. The experimentation comes amidst other rules change testing MLB is currently engaging in. In the Bible, Noah saves animals from a great flood by bringing pairs of different species onto his ark. Now, scientists envision doing something similar — by sending 6.7 million samples of seeds, sperm, eggs, and DNA to a vault on the Moon. A team of scientists from the University of Arizona presented the plan at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Aerospace Conference last weekend. It may sound like something from science-fiction — but it’s not that far-fetched. “Earth is naturally a volatile environment, explained Jekan Thanga, the study author and a mechanical engineer. Any number of things — a volcano eruption, a nuclear bomb, or an asteroid — could trigger some kind of environmental collapse that could wipe out the Earth’s diverse array of life, both plant and animal. But a vault on the Moon could keep a copy of those lifeforms safe. Another great listener contribution from Hrothgar Great tunes. Thank you. They say men never ask for directions. Not so if you are a Genius Award Winner. A Chicago man has been arrested after stopping to ask the police directions in a stolen car, Chicago’s NBC affiliate reports. Lafayette Moore was taken into custody on Friday for charges of motor vehicle theft, Joliet, Illinois police said in a statement. Per the police, an officer was investigating a crash when Moore approached the scene in a car and asked the officer for directions to Interstate 80. The officer gave Moore directions but then realised that the car matched the description of a vehicle stolen earlier in the afternoon. After verifying that the car was stolen, Moore was arrested without incident. Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by Observational Skills. ![]() Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Okay, I'm just gonna say it: I don't want Daylight Savings Time changed.
It isn't that hard to spring forward or fall back an hour just twice a year, I don't care what anyone says. And it gives us lots of daylight in summer evenings, whereas in winter the sun comes up when it's supposed to, not at some ungodly 8:30 in the morning when everyone's already at school or work or whatever. Getting up and driving to work in the pitch dark, in January? No thank you. If we're going to do just one thing all year long, it should be Standard Time, not Daylight Time. I'd rather sunset come earlier in summer than be off by an hour permanently. But like I said, it's fine the way it is, and we should leave it that way. One of the few interesting things left in baseball is the variation of the umpire's strike zone. If an umpire really is off, he hears about it by MLB. It is as much a part of baseball as anything. And even if in a game, the ump is calling a low strike, at least they are usually consistent about it. The word immediately gets out in the dugout.
Also, if a player is a dick, then a bad call sends them over the top. Again, a good thing. It adds to the drama of the game. But by testing out a computerized pitch call, it just kills any humanity that baseball had left in it. I used to have Mariner season tickets, years ago. I haven't been to a game now in 3 years. Baseball is a binary game. Strike/Ball, Fair/Foul, Safe/Out.
Back when I was a huge fan I was often heard to say it was only a matter of time before calling the game was mostly automated. My idea was to (eventually) have sensors in the ball, gloves, shoes and bases. The ball would know when it's in a glove, hit the ground, or tagged someone, the glove would know when a ball is in it or when it tagged someone, the shoe (or batting glove) would know when it touched a base. That would be the Safe/Out calling taken care of. I used to think about a lot of stuff. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg, now bad for baseball at March 13, 2021 10:31 PM (sy5kK) I generally agree with the humanity sentiment but umpires are barely human to begin with. Getting rid of them would be a blessing. A fair, consistent strike zone adds way more to the game than it would take away. There's nothing I hate more in sports than the refs getting involved. It destroyed my love of football decades ago. They just have too much power. A bad call on 3rd down with less than 5 minutes to go is at best game-changing, and at worst game-ending. In basketball, hockey and football, even with replay, you are stuck with them and their shitty frail (but arrogant) human judgments. OTOH in baseball you can get rid of them, except for one that is needed to know and enforce all the obscure rules. Posted by: ... at March 13, 2021 10:40 PM (uEbPt) 119

> If God allows the earth to be destroyed. I don't think He will be enthused about continuing our race on the moon.
God helps those who help themselves. Guy is in a major flood, standing out on his roof as the floodwaters cover his porch. Some rescuers come by in a boat. "Get in!" "No thanks, God will save me!" A little while later the water is up to the top of the first floor. Another boat comes by. "Get in!" "No thanks, God will save me!" Now the water is up to the peak of the roof. A helicopter comes by and drops a harness. "Put it on!" "No thanks, God will save me!" The water keeps rising and the dude drowns. He gets to the afterlife and has a bone to pick with God. "God, where were you? You were supposed to save me!" God says: "What do you mean? I sent two boats and a helicopter." Maybe it's time to update that to two boats, a helicopter, and a spacecraft. Me, I'm hoping that Elon Musk gets to Mars and declares independence before he gets taken down. We carried it down to Bethesda Row and sat out in the sunshine. Dog was so well behaved but everytime someone would walk by with a dog, they would stop and ask if their dog could come over. It was hysterical watching these dogs sniff around each other while the proud parents looked on. One dog actually climbed in my son's lap and the owner had to drag the dog away.

> I have always thought of South Dakota as somehow a part of the West, like Montana,
I think "the West" starts when you hit mountains or at least mountain-like terrain, which for South Dakota would be around the Black Hills. The eastern Dakotas are every bit as flat and desolate as Kansas. Those things don't really coincide with state boundaries... it's like the way that northern Missouri is part of the Midwest, but the Ozarks in southern Missouri are definitely not. The Ozarks are far closer to the hillbillies of Appalachia both genetically and culturally than they are to the Scandis in Minnesota, the Krauts in Wisconsin, or the Poles in Chicago. Just to make clear, 2nd favorite live stream thing is a YT channel about "dark ambient" music, and the folks there are a mixture of "I will kill myself tonight" and "Don't, Let's enjoy the dark instead." Plus, to be honest, a lot and I mean A LOT of me saying "don't kill yourself, here's why not."

I know at one point it got so bad they had special "fight" shirts, consisting of the ones that were already torn. Apparently they'd actually cut before a fight scene so everyone could stop and put on a "fight" shirt, lest one of the few remaining good shirts get messed up. For years, I read Harlan Ellison bitching that Roddenberry had ruined his masterpiece script for The City on the Edge of Forever. Then I saw Roddenberry's take, which was something like "Harlan gave me a script that would have cost $10 million to shoot, and I had a budget of about $1.95." There some discussion about the healthiness of corn fed beef. Cows weren't mean to eat grains. They are grass eaters. Some studies say feeding corn changes the omega acids from the good kind to the kind that cause cholestral. I will allow, though, that grass fed dairy cows make for some great dairy products.
Posted by: Pug Mahon, Skwerls Stomping on My Roof All cows eat grass while they are growing. They don't eat corn until they get sent to the feed lots for fattening up. Posted by: sniffybigtoe Dairy cattle are generally fed alfalfa, technically a legume not a grass. Protein levels run in the neighborhood of 20%. Beef cattle are generally fed Timothy grass hay which has a protein level around 10%. In spite of what you might think , a lower protein level produces better quality beef. Feeding a dairy cow grass hay , which is cheaper, actually can cause problems in a cow being milked twice a day. Spent part of my bean counter career as a farm co-op GM. What I meant to say, not very clearly, is if Deer are fed or feed on a lot of corn, they taste WAY WAY better than deer that live out West, where they can't even grow good sagebrush.
For a topping, I don't like much more than salt, pepper, garlic. "Krauterbutter" or herbed butter, was something I picked up in Bavaria when stationed there. There's a special mix of herbs and spices, mixed with cold creamery butter and garlic and allowed to age or blend overnight. It's pretty goddam tasty on a steak. The "Salt Grass" chain of mediocre steak houses is named after the phenomenon of the Texas Coastal Salt Grass, and the cattle that've fed on it for a year or more. I'd say that beef splits the difference between ordinary, mudane "grass fed" beef, and the truly superior grain-finished prime, as served at most any top-flight U.S. steakhouse.
The salt-grass fed beef gives the earthier taste of the grass, but the high salt concentration in that grass results in a unique (and good) beef flavor, which, while not grain-finished, remains far superior to the ordinary, inland grasses. Think of it as a nearly self-seasoning beef. Problem is, other than local small town butcher shops, you're NOT going to find any in the marketing chains. It's a local thing, period. Oh, and as far as I know, Salt Grass Steakhouse sells about as much genuine salt-grass beef, as Panda Express sells panda. Which would be precisely, none. I like a good porterhouse or cowboy cut ribeye. The bone improves the flavor. See if I remember this right, a T bone and a porterhouse are the same thing, just farther along the cut. And they are a "new york strip" on one side, and the filet on the other. But the bone adds flavor when cooking.
Don't get me wrong, a standalone Filet is awesome - tender, but they are vanishingly small these days, and because they are lean, the beefy flavor isn't quite there. That's why they are almost always wrapped in a strip of bacon. Posted by: Common Tater at March 13, 2021 11:48 PM (YtsCi) 441

Posted by: Braenyard, starving the beast at March 14, 2021 12:10 AM (WSVNe) My parents' first Bug was a '59 iirc; it had the reserve 'tank' lever thingy. The '64 had a gauge. Early on in car ownership, I learned to always check my gas mileage. For one thing, it allowed me to monitor engine performance; if it fell by 10% or more it was time for a tune up. Trip odometers made the task a lot easier. *ahem* I still do it routinely. With those two tricks, I don't really need a gas gauge. I've had a couple of cars without working gauges, and I've never run out of gas. *buffs nails* Posted by: GnuBreed at March 14, 2021 12:35 AM (F0YaR) 560
My first car (as a 16 year-old) was a $500 '51 Plymouth, known as 'The Grey Ghost', on account of the faded grey paint.
It used to be, before the manufacturers began to use suspended pedals, that the brake master cylinder was beneath the floorboard. There was a little trap door in the floorboard that gave access to the reservoir. This was a good thing, because the brake system leaked like a sieve. I kept a pint of brake fluid in the car, and would periodically top up the reservoir while at stop signs. Another aspect of the era was that the parking brake was a drum on the driveshaft. One of the first things I do with every new (to me) vehicle is to put my 5 gallon gas can in the trunk then watch the gauge. When it reads empty, I note the mileage and keep driving until we stop. You'd be amazed at the difference between the gauge and reality. My Ramcharger will go another 42 miles reading empty before it actually runs out.

No, but I've ridden several, and I love 'em. Fun fact. When first introduced, the local San Antonio dealership Sales Manager took a Sunday ride with employees and several customers in the Texas Hill Country. He was on the new Valkyrie. I was on my '89 Wing, with full Progressive Suspension, Tulsa fork brace, and steering head and swingarm bearings dialed to "zero", but still with free movement. Premium fork and shock oils, too. (identical to San Antonio Police Gold Wing setup of the day) I kept up with the Valkyrie, but it wasn't easy. He had the horsepower and less weight. I had the more tuned-in suspension and lower Center of Gravity. (Valkyrie fuel in conventional tank, Wing fuel under the seat.) Never passed him, but stayed on the Valkyrie's ass for more than 12 miles of very challenging roads. Sales Manager was amused, pissed, and impressed, all at the same time. Plymouth Valiant Push-Button Tranny > Studebaker Ultramatic Tranny
Posted by: Cicero (@cicero43) at March 14, 2021 01:09 AM (fLVm1) No argument from me. Chrysler products used their own Torqueflite transmissions, and they were very tough. The Packard Ultramatic was heavy, weak, and hard to work on. Packard would have been wiser to have licensed the Hydramatic from General Motors; it was by far the best big-car automatic of the early '50's. The Detroit Gear series of automatics was developed with the active participation of Studebaker engineers, and featured a lockup torque convertor a full 30 years before they were adopted by the rest of the industry. Ford wanted to license that design from Studebaker, and Studebaker foolishly refused, wanting to keep exclusive rights to their design. So Ford worked with Warner Gear, and developed the similar, but simpler Fordomatic. Eventually, the Detroit Geat transmission became too expensive for Studebaker to afford, and they bought their Flightomatics from Warner Gear, which were nearly indentical to the Fordomatic. And Jaguar wound up getting the Detroit Gear transmission. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 14, 2021 01:29 AM (mzC78) 654

Early '70's, Granny (Mom's Mom) needed a car, Dad had a line on a 1960 white DeSoto with green interior that a little old lady drove since new (widowed) and then sold it to Dad because she couldn't drive any more. Maybe $500 for a 10-11 year old car that was in pristine condition with low miles. The lady sold it to my Dad because she knew he liked cars and his was always the cleanest one around.
But that push-button transmission was a first for my eyes. We were always a Ford/Mercury family. It was a damned nice car, though. The original plastic seat covers were still on, and only the driver's seat showed any wear. Car was given to Granny, but a first cousin, who was pretty much a fuckup his whole life (until he died being drunk in a car crash) had a couple of years before that totaled the DeSoto. Dad was so pissed he didn't talk for a couple of days, as I recall. The efficacy of daylight savings time is... non-existent. You can thank the Krauts for that. They were the first to do it, way back around WWI IIRC, and there was some demonstable energy savings, but that was with gas lamps, and way before modern energy usage patterns. In modern times, there is not much evidence that it helps or hurts (sort of like mask wearing). In some locations, you can pull out some effect, but in others, it seems to go the other way. Net goose egg. However, Big Retails seems to like DST. Longer daylight hours after getting off work time are a help to their business. Big Golf likes it too. Fuck it. If it were up to me, I would banish Daylight Savings Time and be on Standard Time henceforth. We define a day according to Mean Solar Time. The idea is that "noon" is when Mr. Sun is directly overhead, and midnight is when he is at the opposite, directly underneath. But, because of the eccentricity of the earth's orbit, and the axial tilt, that period between successive noons varies over the year. "Apparent solar time" would be measured with a sundial. The Equation of Time relates the different between that and Mean Solar Time, which is the average of that over a (tropical) year. "Equation" in that is an ancient usage which means "difference" or adjustment. If you were using a local sundial, there is also you longitude difference with the middle of your local time zone. You could define a truly local time zone for your longitude, which a mean Solar Time averaging exactly noon sun overhead at your spot. Apparent solar time can vary from mean by about 15 minutes in either direction over the year. While it's periodic, it's complicated thing. Around the first of Nov, the sundial will be ahead by about 15 minutes, and falls behind by about that much by mid-February. It has four zeros per year, meaning sundial time is equal to mean time. That occurs roughly mid April, mid June, first of Sept, and Christmas day. The leap year cycle shifts those by about 1 day over the 4 year cycle. Yesterday my brother and I started the task of cleaning out mom's basement.
Dad was a woodworker by hobby, and was mechanically inclined - one of those people who could fix pretty much anything. He kept odds and ends of things that, you know, might be that thing you need for the next fix-it or project. Then, add in all the tools. Amazing how much stuff we accumulate. We barely made a dent in his work area. Posted by: My life is insanity at March 14, 2021 04:47 AM (Z/jzm) 773

we usually get blueberries on sale if you buy two packs. I always freeze half of them and use them later for whatever. If you keep them out they will dry up pretty fast and never be the same. Then again, you can get frozen wild blueberries and those have more flavor.
Another thing I regularly freeze is bacon. I learned a long time ago working at a golf course pro shop/snack bar that frozen bacon was a thing. Of course the key is you have to separate the slices or you won't get anywhere. Not much better than always having bacon ready when needed. The refrigerated stuff gets slimy after a week or two opened in the fridge. Posted by: Quint at March 14, 2021 04:59 AM (FFJ9Q) 780

Some old tools have a monetary value as collectibles, but they are few. If you have some to get rid of, there's always those small museums you see along the road, some being operated by individuals. The really old stuff would make a nice display or add to an existing one.

This Marine Corps pile on of Tucker Carlson is really something. I know these officers are scoring major points by dunking on "boomers" and conservatives. And I have not even seen Carlson's comments. I will have to check that out asap. But I have been clear how much I do respect everyone who serves in the military. Women have always served with distinction.
But there is something odd about what is going on right now. It seems that there can only be one view and all other views, no matter how nuanced, are to be shamed and dumped in the ash bin of history. Posted by: Quint at March 14, 2021 05:30 AM (FFJ9Q) 801
See that is why I have a real problem with Marine leaders going on
social media to attack civilian pundits. Unlike them and many of their followers, I know there were real debates and discussions in the country and in the services just a few years ago. I know most who served in the past would likely question some of the views and priorities of the present leadership. Hell, most in National Cemeteries would have real issues with some of the views and political takes the present leadership have. Who speaks for them? Sure things change, but at least have some respect for other opinions. And Marines are not supposed to be getting into political fights on twitter. Posted by: My life is insanity at March 14, 2021 05:20 AM (Z/jzm) I know many love it and in many ways it is the best part. Personally, I never liked it. Some foods are better a day or two later, like a stew, curry, etc. Pizza basically started drying out the minute after it is made. There are some ways to preserve the left over humidity but that is mostly a day of affair. The best way I know to reheat it is to put it in a pan over very low heat and cover the pan with a lid or tin foil. The moisture is the real key imo. But still, if there is a good way to save it for the next day, I am all ears. Posted by: Quint at March 14, 2021 05:33 AM (FFJ9Q) 805
