No, this was back when consumer grade calculators were a serious luxury.

On your other point when I got to grad school I realized I was in deep trouble when the professor asked the class "what is e to the minus 0.3 power" and before I could get my hand on my calculator 3 or 4 students had done the first few items of a Taylor series expansion in their heads and given out the answer. That look on your face when you realize you are a guppy swimming with sharks.

I'll never forget him hitting on my mom, who was still a looker 23 years ago. He made sure he sat next to her, and he chatted her up the whole lunch.

I haven't talked to any of the family since this whole thing started, but I know Chuck would be crushed.

I gotta wonder though - the millennials take their video games and cartoons a lot more seriously. So what happens when they go after Mario? Or Sonic? Or Ren & Stimpy? Or Johnny Bravo? Or Darkwing Duck? Or is that Gen X? Z? I can't keep track of these things...

Too many memories of math/engineering profs waking l into class with only the book, no notes, drop it on the desk and proceed to write on the board and speak simultaneously at rapid fire pace for two hours while I struggled just to write everything down. Sometimes a brave soul would ask a question just so we could take a short breather while the prof answers his question. Mollie Hemingway is wrong.

Unlike us, other countries' leaders aren't a bunch of useless, stupid stooges and tools. They watch. They know.

Hiding Biden in his basement doesn't hide the obvious truth from them - it just heightens the perception that he's a useless, stupid stooge and tool who may be safely ignored, that his masters are anti-American Communists who can be counted upon to damage our country, and that we cannot be counted upon to help the few friends we have.

Yeah. I think it would be useful to have a "how to do adult things" series of classes throughout high school. I had to jump my friends car a month or so ago, and he was holding the cables near his car and looked at me really sheepishly and was like "what colors do I put where, again?" and I was like "just hold those two sides as far apart as you can, I'll be there in a minute" then I showed him. I think every high schooler should at least witness that being done once. Because it really is fucking easy.

265 Id like to see more of a focus on life skills in high school. Basic financial education. How debt works. Maybe a basic civics and law class. Learning how to be a critical thinker and read between the lines. Maybe bring back shop class or at least have a how to be an adult class. Id say half or more of my friends dont know how to jump a car or change a tire. Things like that.
Posted by: Harry Paratestes at March 09, 2021 08:42 PM (UPoLF)

Civics and economics are already required courses, they're just corrupted by leftist indoctrination, devoting more class time won't fix that. Critical thinking is something taught in every class to the students that bother to learn. Can't help those who refuse to.

Shop class is useful, but vocational tracks are dead now that every student is pushed towards higher ed. even if they have no business being there. Honestly needs to be solved by splitting students between traditional and vocational education after middle school.

How to be an adult is not something taxpayers should ever be responsible for. If their parents can't/won't teach them, they can learn the hard way.

Just let them procreate, and get government handouts, and vote and say "well, tough shit." (obviously, that's on the extreme end. --------------

Toward the end of one episode, the cat falls into a water barrel and the white stripe comes off. Pepe doesn't realize she's the same female he's been chasing the whole episode, and wanders off to look for his "playing hard to get" love.

However, that same fall caused him to land in blue paint. The paint hides his appearance, and apparently covers his smell. So as he wanders off, the cat watches him and immediately falls head over heels in lust with him. Pepe wanders back to the room where he first met the cat... and she comes in behind him, locks the door, and begins to chase him.

In the end you use the "extra" $3,500 a month you "save" (on a $60,000 a year salary where apparently there are no taxes of any kind to pay, to "pay" your $220,000 mortgage off in just 5 years.

It was so convoluted, it apparently amazed all the rubes in the comments who don't understand that you don't need a special "credit" account to do this. Just skip the special credit account entirely and apply this extra magical $3,500 directly to your mortgage principal each month.

Spoiler: The "extra" $3,500 *doesn't exist* and the woman basically took 30 minutes to explain how to draw a circle by putting a pen on a piece of paper and then rotating the building you are in 360 degrees.

1 semester of US Gov and Economics each are required for highschool diploma, though some AP/IB programs circumvent that.

And yes, the name of the game is personal responsibility. If you can't budget and refuse to learn (and you have a long time to learn, it's not like you screw up your whole life by making a few bad financial in your 20's or 30's, you just limit your chances at becoming upper class a bit) it is not the responsibility to others to protect you from your own poor decision making.

I did not take either of those classes in high school, and I graduated 15ish years ago. I'm sure different states have different requirements. We did have History classes though, so I guess learning about how horrible the western world is year after year could qualify as a US government class. Definitely didn't take anything anywhere near an economics class though.

320 Hmm. My husband was a mechanic (auto, jets, recips) so I learned a lot. I've rebuilt or helped rebuild several engines, know how to do carburetors (a useless skill these days), know how to do oil changes and change a tire.

But ... at 77, 5'2" and roughly 130 lb., I'm no longer physically capable, nor do I have a place to do such work. So I have AAA, and a reliable mechanic a couple of blocks away. It isn't just knowledge that counts.

OTOH, landlady loves that I can fix the toilet, repair doorknobs and other small stuff so I don't have to bother her often unless it's for something I simply can't reach, or major problems.

I love those YouTube financial "life hacks". They're fun to watch and try to figure out where the person starts their bullshitting.

My favorites were the "pay half of your mortgage every 2 weeks and you'll pay it off early" but they made it way more complicated then it had to be. First off, the interest is calculated monthly, not daily. Secondly, yes, you will pay it off a bit sooner then if you pay it once a month since there are 26 2 week cycles in a calendar year, so you're basically just making one extra payment a year.

327 The biggest disservice we do to our high schoolers is not teaching them - REALLY teaching them - about compounding interest and how easy it is to become wealthy.

It would be trivially easy, too. Make each week of the semester count as a year, and let the kids keep up with their earnings at the end of each week.

Instead we talk about it for 10 minutes two weeks before graduation.

You're right, varies state by state. Guess my point should be, it is already a requirement in some states, and it accomplishes nothing when it comes to educating people about either topic. Partially because teachers are 97% leftist, and partially because high schools mostly teach to the lowest common denominator, which means very little real education occurs.

I'm fine with whatever classes being available at the undergrad level because education is voluntary and students (are supposed to) have a financial stake at that point, but it's not particularly useful in compulsory education.

371 empire 1, Almost all Autozones will actually run a code scanner on your car if the check engine light is on. They will also test your battery and/or your alternator. Usually no charge. The most expensive scanners will actually mount to your car's dataport and scan while you are driving which is generally useful for intermittent problems but otherwise paying a lot more for that issue.

An aftermarket car manual for your vehicles is usually a pretty good thing too--Haynes has been doing them for years and has them broken down by groups of model years for particular vehicle models and makes. The troubleshooting guide in them with the trouble codes is one of the more valuable diagnostic tools you can have.

Generally if the check engine light comes on and burns steadily it's emmissions related and you're not going to damage anything by driving it for a bit before getting it repaired (or passing inspection).

If it flashes you need to stop the car because it's a serious engine problem that can actually damage something.

In my car, any red dash light is bad news. Yellow / orange is ignorable.

I've only had one red light come on, and it was while I was driving to take the bar exam several hours away from where I lived in a car I rarely drove. So I took a picture of it, sent it to my then girlfriend, and asked her to look it up. Apparently it was some airbag system failure. I said "fuck it, I'll worry about it later, I have more important shit going on" then a few days later, after the bar, went back to my car, started it up, and the warning light was off. I felt like I was being cosmically fucked with.

386 Rock Auto is generally where I buy sensors and parts for scheduled maintenance--they pretty much have the old Sears, good, better, and best. If doing it yourself, buy the best. But even the best stuff is not as reliable as in years past primarily due to where it is made.

389 I said "fuck it, I'll worry about it later, I have more important shit going on" then a few days later, after the bar, went back to my car, started it up, and the warning light was off. I felt like I was being cosmically fucked with.

390 They replaced the ABS computer controller, before I finalized the deal. They said they had to have enough time to put one in place and see if it would work right, before I could take the car. The modules are rebuilt and sometimes they have to go through a couple to get a good one.

What annoys me about those is thanks to obummer if you want to switch your own summer and winter tires you have to buy a sensor for each additional rim. Auto shops cannot mount a tire on a rim without a sensor so the only way around it is to get the equipment to mount and balance a tire yourself. Still trying to wrap my head around how that is somehow under federal jurisdiction.

394 Notsothoreau, I had a 1996 Yukon I loved. Had to part with it when it had 286,000 miles. I was terrified something big was gonna happen. i miss it. At the time, I wasn't in a position to put out lots of money. I bought a 2001 escalade for 3k in 2014. I called it the beast.

Now I have the first car I am making payments on. 2014 Tahoe. Bought it used. I love it. Seriously thinking about car shield. Will probably be the last car I own.

399 I wanted an older Suburban. They just couldn't find much in the way of tow vehicles. I worked with this Auto Mentors program, where they find a car for you, have a mechanic check it out, then let you test drive it. If you like it, they do whatever work needs to be done before you get the car. Really a nice program.

The Yukon is high mileage but most of those type vehicles are. It was well maintained and my regular mechanic thinks it can do a cross country trip no problem.

I bought a cheap... $25 TPMS reset tool. The stupid thing about those is you'll have to get one specifically for you vehicle, or manufacturer. It's the frequencies the sensors operate at.

Easy to use. I had to do this when I replaced the wheels and tires on my 2016 Chevy Colorado.

With the temperature swings we get in New England, especially in the shoulder seasons, the bigger risk is inflating your tires to, say 34 psi when it's 10 degrees out, then by early next week its 65 degrees out and your tires are way overinflated, and can cause a blow out.

I don't care if my tires are at 26 psi (when the sensors kick on), that's really not a big deal, they can run at 26 psi for a day or two. IDK, I just wish I could turn the tire pressure monitoring system off.

People get hung up on 10-15mpg, but if I've spent $6K to buy an otherwise good running truck that gets that mileage, I've got $50K+ to spend on gas before I've hit the purchase price of a new truck that gets 18-22mpg and still requires gas.

I can buy a bunch of fuel for $50K.

405 This Yukon had 274,000 miles when I got it. I just didn't see anything I could afford that had lower mileage. And I ran my Mazda 626 to 350,000 miles before I sold it. I'm familiar with the Vortech engine, because our pickup had that. And I know that the transmissions can need to be replaced. I'll just save my money for the big repair.

I have some friends who swear by the latest generation Fords. The 6.7 I think.

The 7.3 was a leaky mess, but it was reliable as fuck, but the government banned it, the 6.0 had a lot of issues, and I think there may have been another one in between. IDK though, I'm not in the market for a diesel truck, so i don't really stay on top of it.

414 There are two different systems for TPMS... one just measures the rotations vs speed. This was on my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The other is actually a pressure measuring sensor. IMO this is better, but prone to wig out with temperature changes.

The rotations vs speed just looks for one wheel/tire to be X percent out of wack with the other 3. The pressure sensors actually give you a PSI.
