The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Diversity is one of those words that means whatever the left wants it to mean, as long as we all assume that it doesn't exist and that things must change to achieve it. But diversity is antithetical to market economies and societal freedom.

Do we want the boardrooms of America to look like the nurses' lounges to look like the restaurant kitchens to look like the teachers to look like the tree trimmers to look like the programmers to look like....

In fact, "diversity" is nothing more than doublespeak for conformity. Or as Alana Newhouse writes in this long and rambling but worthwhile essay..."flatness."

Everything Is Broken

Flatness is the reason the three jobs with the most projected growth in your country all earn less than $27,000 a year, and it is also the reason that all the secondary institutions that once gave structure and meaning to hundreds of millions of American lives—jobs and unions but also local newspapers, churches, Rotary Clubs, main streets—have been decimated. And flatness is the mechanism by which, over the past decade and with increasing velocity over the last three years, a single ideologically driven cohort captured the entire interlocking infrastructure of American cultural and intellectual life. It is how the Long March went from a punchline to reality, as one institution after another fell and then entire sectors, like journalism, succumbed to control by narrow bands of sneering elitists who arrogated to themselves the license to judge and control the lives of their perceived inferiors.

Flatness broke everything.

The rabid drive for societal change on the part of the progressives has resulted in unbelievable conformity of thought that has drifted inexorably to the left. No longer do we have a marketplace of ideas; the long march has effectively walled off the very political philosophy that is responsible for so much of the world's successes. What we have is flatness of thought, flatness of expression (see the art world!), even flatness in architecture and design!

The reigning aesthetic of the 20th century was modernism, which articulated in one word the values of the industrial revolution. Modernism and the Machine Age brought with them their own features: Anti-classicalism; anti-Victorianism; the power of science; the absence of filigree; an emphasis on the future over the past, and the valorization of machine production and engineering as the highest forms of human creativity. This new aesthetic soon began to transform all parts of cultural and material existence, from visual art and poetry to fashion and the built environment.

Starting in the second decade of the 1900s, certain Communists began seeing in modernism a potential advertisement for the values of a mass society of industrial workers laboring under the direction of a small group of engineers. In other words, this aesthetic—which whole swaths of the Western world were already in the process of quickly adopting—could also be the perfect delivery mechanism for their political ideology.

One hundred years later, we find ourselves in the middle of a similar cultural and political struggle.

From this perspective it makes perfect sense to destroy the symbols of society's success. They must rebuild in their own image; replacing the glories of the past with their oppressive uniformity of thought and action.

Imagine a world without beauty and individuality, without a personal and private relationship with God, without any of the things that make us all unique.

Because that's exactly what they imagine for us all.

Welcome to Critical Theory, the preferred outlet of the Post-Modernists. The individual reduces to the group and the group reduces to a power position. All things reduce to their manifestation of or influence on power positions.

It's deeply evil, to a point that is genuinely satanic.

Ah, now you get it. You see, "equity" only matters in the so-called "good jobs" like programming, project management, government administration, executive management, etc. *Those* positions must have so-called "equity."

The "bad jobs" like garbage men and roofers will never have "equity" enforcement. So whites, men, Asians, etc. who are forced out to make way for "equity" will be forced into those jobs even if they're not suited for them or they don't pay as well as they're accustomed to, since those same groups will also be excluded from most support programs for displaced workers.

Nope, that's where the "intersectionality" kludge on Critical Theory comes in. The problem of reduction to the group and then reduction to power is that there are too many groups they can't be rid of yet. The result is the "oppression Olympics" with which we're all familiar.

If whites were the best at basketball, equity would apply because of all the same tired arguments they make all the time anyway. But since one of the most oppressed groups under CRT - Black westerners - are the best at basketball, equity doesn't apply since inequity in this case is restorative due to historical mistreatment.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 11, 2021 11:13 AM (Jsjd7)

44 I disagree that everything is broken. Using just AOS posters as an example, plenty of people here have it together in their lives albeit with challenges that occur in every person's life. Happiness, education, wisdom, and contentment must start with the individual. It cannot be bought nor sold and government or societal edicts cannot create it.

What is new is that broken people have been put in charge of our public policy and discourse and their own personal demons make them want to change the world rather than themselves.

I don't think it will work. Alinsky's strategy depends on honesty. You can use the rules against the structure only if the structure believes in those rules.

But most Critical Theorists are not true believers and indeed many if not most are cynical exploiters of something convenient. You can't use the rules against someone who doesn't believe in those rules and doesn't much care about consistency.

Years ago, I noticed that more and more people were wearing black clothes, no more bright colors or individual styles - everybody on the sidewalks subway, buses, trains, planes. I used to muse, "Hmmm, we are starting to look like drab communists who can only buy the same thing."

I guess that was the plan all along.

On the gripping hand, if I was confident it worked or did nothing (but I distrust the rush to market and the ethics of everyone involved in this racket) I would have no issues taking it.
I will treat this like the airport gate bidding process and hold out for more $$ or just keep to the original plan of no vaccine.

92 Back a few days ago, a post (or should I say the comments) touched on this very idea through the snarking at regional accents.

Some folks hated Bahstuhn accents.

Some folks made fun of Southern Drawl.

Others weren't so enamored of the New Joisey twang.

Variety is the spice of life and like regional accents, this variety is being pounded out of us by the media we consume...the need to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

My two cents, fwiw.

Somewhat related: I was in a grocery store and Limelight by Rush came over the speakers.

This is such a hoary cliche.

No, his voice isn't for everyone , but for those who like it it, he actually has a lot of range and many different ways of using it--plus his ability to phrase is second to none.
He'd never have been picked foe American Idol or The Voice, but Bob Dylan can sing rings around the monotonous excruciating and annoying high-pitched wail emanating from from Geddy Lee's pie hole.

179 The value of diversity is that, properly integrated into a system, it reduces idiosyncratic risk. A forest full of different types of plant and animal life is less vulnerable to a single parasite or disease sweeping through. An investment portfolio of multiple asset classes, and multiple different kinds of each asset type is less vulnerable to a major loss in any one class. A diverse economy is less vulnerable to economic shocks, which means less political unrest during economic downturns.

"I agree, not everything is broken. We say that today 3/11/21. Wonder how we will feel as the years go by until finally 11/5/24 gets here? I pray I will not have pulled all of my hair out."

The major issue facing ordinary people during any crisis is to accept that you are limited in what you can do or what others can do. So, concentrate on the variables such as family, faith, friends, personal resilience, health, that you can control and remember that this time too shall pass. In an internet age, probably sooner rather than later. The truth is that oligarchies that ignore most peoples' desires for stability and security in life are short lived.

Even during horrific times, for the most part, people survive, mourn their losses, and persist. The will to do so is in your hands.

No, I think they honestly don't have any clue how to survive in a world that doesn't operate according to the rules that they've always lived by. It's like a kid who does well in high school and then falls apart after graduation because it turns out life isn't like high school. I think they know that the system is rotted and fragile and will eventually collapse, they just are too scared to allow it to collapse, so instead they try to keep it propped up for another year, another month, another week, and collect their grift while they can.

Nothing much that happens or is commented here is real. And people mistake this for reality, because perhaps their personal reality is unpleasant.
Sure, there are the "MoMe's"; I do know a few commenters here in meat space (and really, I married one), so it's not like everything that happens here is inconsequential. But...it's not real, until you make it "real", by actually interacting in the real world.
I think "Witch Doctor" and another young guy who did comment here and committed suicide a few years ago, have much more serious issues than taking advice from people on AoS.
I also think we can take it easy on each other, because things are just not going to magically get better. Just let people vent without jumping down their throats.
And Bon Scott drank himself to death, as I recall.

330 What I'm pointing out is that conservatives , IMO, tend to be worse than leftists at wanting to toss leaders for even the slightest wrongthink or decision making.

The problem is that if the "leaders" don't get immediate, hard pushback for moving left, they think (exacerbated by the "newfound" respect from the MFM and dems) that is the way to go.

When the bastards learn that the most infinitesimal turn to the left will be met with recalls, pitchforks and torches, then we might be on the right track.

I think both major parties have lost all connection to why they exist, in the sense of how they were supposed to benefit their voters.

They are now both puppets of their respective oligarchs, with the Democrat Party being the more corrupted of the two, because an oversimplified view of it is their corruption causes untold damage and destruction, whereas Republican corruption is mainly in the form of indifference, and the slow (and sometimes not so slow) ceding of territory to the Democrats.

Sometimes reforms happen, England for example went through some horrific times but survived better than places on the continent. The Eastern Roman Empire lasted about one thousand years longer in Constantinople and other examples of regeneration of civilizations have occurred in history where a good ruler is followed by bad or indifferent but a new ruler comes about to bring reforms again.

What we are seeing is the breakdown of democratic institutions due primarily to the fact that they do not work well unless people are cohesive in their views of what a political system can and cannot do.

Besides his music you mean. During Iraq one of their songs was written from the perspective of an Iraqi boy killed by a US soldier but he's ok with it because that soldier will be following him next and going to hell.

My mom truly pissed off a couple of my aunt's wealthy liberal Democrat friends about thirty years ago.

They were enthusiastically prattling on about how diverse their gated community was... "oh, there's a black family three doors down. And some gays next door. And, and, and..."

My mom laughed directly in their faces, because she's smart and doesn't brook any bullshit. "You're kidding yourselves," she said, "All these people are just like you: affluent, well-educated professionals with the same viewpoints in the same cloistered community. There is no diversity here at all."

She was invited to NO MOAR dinner parties with those two.

Quickie OT: My uncle Larry is going in for heart surgery this morning. Funny guy, retired career Navy who then worked with one of the big defense contractors running F/A-18 simulators on the local Navy base.

Just to get a sense for our relationship, he was kind of bummed that he couldn't help more with moving the business into my new shop space. I told him to get better because I have an incoming shipment of boulders I'll need help with next week...

I'd appreciate some Horde prayers for him.

I know the M60 had it's problems. But it's always been one of my favorites, just because it looks *so* cool. One of the first prints to ever come off my dad's first color printer was just an M60 sitting in some jungle on a tripod, for my bedroom wall.
