Beginner Problem - White To Play (21)

Goal: White can force mate in 3 moves
Hint: Resist the temptation to take the rook

Advanced Problem - White To Play (1282)

This is a forced mate in 2. But what makes it difficult is that the decision tree is quite wide, so there will be many short, stubby little branches. I found 8. See if you can find them all, or maybe I missed one, or counted some duplicates.

This is a zugzwang position for Black. So the trick for White is to see that his knights are optimally placed, so is there another piece that can be moved?

1. h6!

Yes! Now Black has nothing but bad choices. Depending on whichever piece he moves, White can deliver mate with a knight on f7, b7, c6, e6

(1...Rf7 2.Nxf7#)
(1...Ng6 2.Nc6#)
(1...Ra6 2.Nb7#)
(1...Ncd5 2.Ne6#)
(1...Ned5 2.Nc6#)
(1...Rg6 2.Nf7#)
(1...Nb5 2.Ne6#)
(1...Ne6 2.Nxe6#)
etc.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

I don't mind a tiny tat on an ankle. It's when women, and men too, ink up their arms and legs, and more, that it's horrible. No matter how good-looking the woman is to me, tatted-up arms make her look dirty. And not in the "Wow" way, but more like "Take a bath, honey."

56 Tattoos belong on male sailors, marines and special forces personnel.

They do not belong on young ladies. Makes them look cheap. So do nose rings and lip rings etc.

As for soldiers, airmen and guardians, each to his own.

As for astronauts, no. Neal and Buzz and Gurgaryn did not have them so why should the rest.

Dressing Melania: Alice Roi Talks About Designing to Suit the First Lady's Classic Style.

On the red coatdress Trump wore on Air Force One to Mar-a-lago in March 2017:

Melania suggested a red coat with red gloves and red belt. The red we picked had a geranium feel to it; a very fresh and feminine red. The leather we picked for the gloves and belt was very interesting: Although it complemented the color of the coat, it was a very different red. It almost had a [pink tinge] to it. It truly brought the coat to a different place, a more interesting red that wasn't so harsh, but rather more elegant and dynamic.

The coat had many different iterations. Big pockets, notch collars, and at one point it looked like a proper hunting coat. But in the end, Melania wanted it simpler and simpler. And she was absolutely right.

Mrs. Trump paired her red coat dress with matching gloves and her staple pair of Gucci sunglasses and nude Jimmy Choo high heels.

In a book titled "Labor-Based Grading Contracts: Building Equity and Inclusion in the Compassionate Writing Classroom," professor Asao Inoue encourages teachers to ditch grading for a "labor-based" grading system wherein students earn grades based on their effort. The quality of a student's writing would not help or hinder their course grade.

. . . .
Near the beginning of the document, the author admits that the theory of "labor-based" grading is rooted in critical race theory. Critical race theory is the idea that America is rooted in racism as are the systems of modern American society.

99 I never understood tats. When I was growing up they were verbotten. The only legit reason for a tat was that you were an enlisted sailor, or biker. And be sure here, I am not comparing the two.

The thing that stands out to me these days is at one point a tat was to show your individuality. Today, maybe a certain tatoo can do that, but not just having one in general. I guess what i am saying is getting a tatoo in general, seems more like an act of conformity, than and act of individualism.

Yes, Lee Meriwether was Miss America 1955. My father thought she was the stuff back in the day, relatives used to delight in telling.

One of my uncles, his brother-in-law, used to run a furniture store. They would have Miss America go out on this rubber-chicken tour all over the country, and that year that tour landing her at some promotion they were doing at my uncle's furniture store. It was done by some national brand that he carried in the store.

Anyway, my father got to meet her and shake her hands with her. They said he was acting like some giddy schoolboy. He denies it all to this day.

I've been chasing you around threads for the last week, hoping to find a chance to apologize for misunderstanding the provenance of your new pup. I unfortunately confused you with another poster who had mentioned the difficulty of adopting a pet via a rescue group. I had adopted my two Bull Terriers via rescue, who had been either seized from breeder (he was their stud dog) or escaped from breeder (and he did not want her returned once she had been spayed), and foolishly assumed my personal perspective in your case. It was lazy and ignorant of me not to wait to post until I knew your particulars, which included a loving home with dog-parents that loved your new boy, but needed to find him a forever home. I know there are wonderful breeders who love and care for their pups and I spoke before I knew the facts. Please accept my apologies. (And, give your new pup a hug for me.)

She played in lot of other stuff before then, including that Irwin Allen sci-fi show The Time Tunnel, which MeTV also runs on Saturday nights.

She also appeared in several Mission Impossible episodes during that period after Barbara Bain left.

With my neighbor's help, we replaced my water heater here, two evenings ago. 12 y/o unit, 30 gal. electric. All 33 houses in this neighborhood have attic-installed heaters. None of them froze, but the City restored water pressure at about 50% more than before the freeze. And the age-weakened tank sprang a slow, but rapidly worsening leak. The new one fit through the attic stairs scuttle with 1/2" to spare on the sides. I'm now going to have to drop the stairs so I can winch up a deep freezer into the attic. (the attic IS HVAC cooled). Only available footage for it, and it's INSANE to keep a freezer running in a 120 degree garage in the summer.

Here's where the Fed finds itself (and this because of the same "experts" and smartest people in the room who don't have a clue what they're doing). They've printed a pile of money to "save the system". Starting in 2008. They were trying to slowly, slowly unwind all that, and then the 'Rona hit and they had to "save everything" again, keeping it going with all the shutdowns and making sure the federal govt had all that Rona money to spend.

They printed about $3.5T since March 2020. You may think that's a joke, but that's what they did.

When inflation starts taking off, the Fed is supposed to start "tightening", pulling money out of the system. This cases interest rates to rise. Remember those ridiculous interest rates in the late 70s? That was Paul Volcker stopping rampant inflation. Which he did.

But the problem now is 20% interest rates would absolutely destroy the federal govt, which is just $27T in debt total.

The moves necessary to stop inflation with all the piles of money they printed would destabilize the system. It would be SMOD to the banking system. You don't just pull a few trillion out at once.

If they did that, the resulting implosion would destroy them as well.

I was working for a European bank then. I told the bankers that the American solution was simple-repatriation of the cash held overseas by US companies through tax holidays and mild coercion. No need for a US Government bailout or "stimulus".

They said, well, that would work for the US, but banks around the world would be illiquid and essentially broke.

Probably not. There is a tremendous amount of bad debt in the Chinese financial system. Nobody knows how much, but according to best guesses (mine) until recently the Chinese holdings of US Treasuries closely mirrored probable level of Chinese bad debt.

As the old saying goes, if you owe the bank $1000, it's your problem; if you owe the bank a million, it's the bank's problem.

do it like a good steak. Season it well, imo, the place many go wrong is by under seasoning. Then cook them on high heat with a bit of oil, even rub the oil in. But the key is to sear them and not overcook them. Tuna should be served rare or medium rare to me. There is no good reason not to unless you flat out don't like it that way. If that is the case, throw them into a hot oven for a couple of minutes after the searing.

Icelandic wool (Lett Lopi, if you needta google) is made up of both undercoat and guard hairs. Usually, guard hairs on an animal are harsh and poky. So its not for anything other than an exterior garment. Irish wool is more what we're used to, but still pretty rustic. I have a sweater I knit from plain undyed irish that I bought at Vibes and Scribes in Cork City. No cables though. Also i bought some Blackwater Abbey wool and it REALLY smells sheepy. Like, I'm worried about attracting border collies. Favorite wool though, hand down, is Shetland.

My house was built with spray foam insulation, walls, roof and sub-floor. After Hurricane Ike, we lost the subfloor foam insulation when the subfloor was removed and replaced. Subfloor now has conventional fiberglass batts. The attic has foam sprayed, not at the joist level above the ceiling, but directly to the underside of the roof decking itself. Though there is not an HVAC vent into the attic, the attic does exist within the HVAC envelope of the house, in total. Summertime, we'll have a 75 degree living room, and the attic might be 85 degrees or so. This past freeze, the attic remained 1.5 degrees warmer than the rest of the house, which fell to 40 degrees, when it was 19 degrees, outside. I didn't care for the roof-deck sprayed foam when we bought the place, but 12 years later, well.. it just works.

331 I worked with some tuna fishermen... here's what they do;

Sear the tuna in a hot skillet using sesame oil. You can season the tuna with whatever you want, but pepper, garlic and soy/teriyaki work best. Ginger too.

Do not over cook. If you "think" it's raw, it's not. Pretend it's steak. It sort of cooks like it, but much faster.

336 Read earlier that the Covid bill contains a one year provision to increase the child tax credit to $3600 for kids under six and $3000 for kids 7-15. It removes the cap on it. So a low income mom of six with no job pays no taxes but will receive $18-21800. Paid in six monthly installments June to December. Touted as lifting millions of children out of poverty. Via my taxes and work.

That explains the rush at the border.

356 not nitpicking but it is an interesting story at least to me. There has been an explosion of "prime beef" over the last decade or so. What i have heard is they are now selling milk cows and whatever as prime. If people think the average stuff they can get at the Piggly Wiggly or Safeway is the same as the steak houses, they are likely wrong. There is a reason you could only get prime at steak houses 20 years ago and it is not that we are producing more great prime steaks.

Don't get me wrong, I love Prime and quite often it goes on a quick sale. But who knows about the aging or origen. It is not a bad product, but I doubt it like the prime you get at a fancy steak house. The aging alone is a big part of the deal.

They don't even use prime, choice, etc. But you can tell a really nice cut.

Currently on the hunt for acreage outside of ERCOT which leaves mostly far eastern and northeastern Texas (panhandle way too miserable).

Only way I would be in central Texas is if I had an aircraft nearby. (Cessna Skyhawk or Skylane would be adequate)

One major take-away from the freeze: FERC and the Fe'ral Government were perfectly willing to let billions of dollars in damage and millions of lives be sacrificed in the name of mother Gaia and Green.

I'm also 100% certain that politicians won't improve the situation, rather are all in on doubling down on unreliable energy especially with tens of thousands moving into ERCOT over the next year.

Need to find a better grid operator and a place where I can run diesel / propane for extended time in view of the anticipated and regular rolling black-outs.

386 Gabriel Smith of Teaching Tolerance blow the lid off the Dr. Seuss controversy!

But what about The Sneetches?
In light of this new information, you may wonder about Dr. Seuss books featuring non-human characters. At Teaching Tolerance, we've even featured anti-racst activities built around the Dr. Seuss book The Sneetches. But when we re-evaluated, we found that the story is actually not as "anti-racis" as we once thought. And it has some pretty intricate layers you and your students might consider, too.

The solution to the story's conflict is that the Plain-Belly Sneetches and Star-Bellied Sneetches simply get confused as to who is oppressed. As a result, they accept one another. This message of "acceptance" does not acknowledge structural power imbalances. It doesn't address the idea that historical narratives impact present-day power structures. And instead of encouraging young readers to recognize and take action against injustice, the story promotes a race-neutral approach.

422 "So, inflation. What are we talking about here? 10% annual, 20%, 50%?"

The 10 Year Breakeven inflation rate spiked to 2.24% since The Fraud election. It was at about 0.5 before that. Bet on inflation rising. Nobody knows how much. But don't worry, The Fed has it under control. :-/

Inflation will be a drag on the economy, as will be increased regulation, an already rising CPI and skyrocketing energy prices. On top of that Democrats profligate piling on of debt may become a bigger problem as rates rise. A stimulus may forestall some of the worse effects, but how long depends on whether sectors of our economy fully recover- and when. We see some sectors picking up but the long term outlook is mixed. Democrats policies are not business friendly. Taxes, and assault on energy and superfluous regulations will all become factors.

436 Every once in a while I'll get a "good" block, but I've noticed what they call "Sharp Cheddar" is usually about as mild as a Colby. Meh. It's good, but "sharp" it ain't. A good sharp cheddar is crumbly, and about as addicting as chocolate, or crack or something. Of course this takes time, and aging. So we know why they are pushing it out the door too soon.

I mean, who wants to be "that guy" and drive out there and complain? "Yeah, my cheese ain't sharp enough. And the "thick cut" bacon! Look at how thin this is!!"

"Extra Sharp" cheddar meets the "sharp" definition, usually. But they only seem to sell it in these twee packages. Not 24 oz blocks, as the Lord intended.
