I was just out driving around and listening to Chris Plante's podcast from yesterday. He says that he knows a few people in Washington from all his years on the Washington beat.

And his sources tell him Biden wanders aimlessly around the White House, walking from room to room. He often finds himself in the VP office (because he remembers that route) and gets confused and realizes that's not his office. Along with this he'll breeze right past the Oval Office at times.

I recognize this behavior from my wife's grandmother in a nursing home. They threatened to lock her in her room.

Also, he reported that Biden had a meeting with GOP reps. Joe sat on one side, the Pubs on the other, and Joe's staff sat behind the Pubs. And Plante says that it became clear to the Pubs pretty quickly that Joe was receiving nods, hand signals and mouthed words from Joe's staff.

Perfectly stated. French is a Pharisee who uses sophistry wrapped in moralism to defend immoral and even tyrannical behavior. He's one of the worst possible of enemies, and why Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter books is one of the best bad guys to come along in the last 50 years.

I agree, in the specific. David French personally is an overpaid nobody with almost not reach or meaning in the world.

But in the general sense, he represents a horrible evil, a type of person and a movement that is chilling to liberty and destructive to public virtue, by turning it into absolute law rather than a matter of conscience.

When we entered a tuberculous room *we* wore masks, to protect ourselves.

So masks do not protect the *other* person, they protect you.

If you have had the Wuhan Virus a mask does nothing for you.

Then I was willing to humor it because I don't find it offensive to be asked to wear a mask in the supermarket, and some of the early reports I saw suggested that there might be a positive benefit in reducing the severity of infections. Even if not, I'm willing to play along with theater if it makes others feel better and life otherwise goes back to normal.

That said, the utter incompetence, stupidity, and hysteria by the mask folks is frustrating, and I'm not going to accommodate that. This isn't April 2020; we know a lot more about the Kung Flu and have plenty of treatments available. French and his ilk are hysterical because the whole thing has demonstrated the bureaucracy and the institutions which were given power to deal with these issues are utter failures. Considering that French and the rest of the GOPe secretly want to be in charge of those institutions, not to get rid of them, they can't stand it.

I do not wear a mask unless at a Dr's. office with a high concentration of spreaders.

And I have been out and about every day, and in schools, for a year. 4 COVID tests, all negative.

In a recent Chemical & Engineering News the headline was COVID-19 Wuhan is an aerosol, with particle sized much smaller than a mask can stop, in which cases masks would hurt you. And data brings this out.

106 Who still thinks that wearing a mask keeps you from getting COVID? It never did. It keeps you from spreading COVID. The single worst thing about COVID is how easy it is to spread it, even before you know you have it. Wearing a mask is not hard and keeps you from inadvertently spreading something you can't know for sure you don't have.

It's not a coincidence that states with higher mask use have less COVID. It's funny Ace put that graph up there that shows what happened in the Dakota's when they implemented a mask mandate in mid November. Jesus.

How about address your side's lies about masks being bad for your health. As if surgeons and scientists haven't been wearing them all day for decades. This was such a weird hill to die on. Rowling talks a lot of crap, and retcons things constantly, even to the point where she's not apparently aware of her own damn books. She said at one point that Hermione was black when clearly described as white in the books.

She was more conservative, once. Then she got involved in Hollywood and the stupid rubbed off on her limited intellect.

However, in a free society, it is up to the individual to decide whether to do something, anything, or not.

You cannot spread it if you don't have symptoms. If it's transmitted another way, then it's not the flu.

182 I also learned long ago (before Covid) to wash my hands and use alcohol based hand sanitizer.

And what's interesting is that this has actually had an impact on viral transmission. Stores washing down shopping carts, using hand sanitizer and gloves etc has actually lowered the number of flu cases for the last year. Many people who get the crud every year once or twice didn't see that over the last 12 months.

And these are simple, obvious, easy solutions that should have been done long ago.

Its not the masks or standing an arbitrary distance apart that has made any difference at all. Its just simple, common sense stuff like wash your damned hands which we should have been doing all along.

But masks have totemic power: they are a visual, easily controlled symbol of submission and behavior and that explains the insane insistence upon them. That, and fetishizing Chinese behavior among the elite.

If you equip a full face respirator with a HEPA filter (2, actually), then you would actually have some protection from Viral aerosol particles.
My 3M full face mask (provided by my employer) is about $130. Hepa filters, which you would need to change every 8 hours of use, are about $30 a pair (through our distributor).

They seem to work as the B rate keeps getting smaller and smaller.

How long do you wear your mask? How often do you clean your mask? When is it prudent for you to change your mask? Do you also wear a face shield? If not, why? Have you read the CDC recommendations?

I'll skip the name calling.

Infection data from every state shows conclusively that masks do nothing to impact the spread. Nothing - nada - zilch. They don't protect you, they don't protect others. No standard cloth or surgical mask manufacturer claims their masks do this - in fact many plainly state they don't. OSHA does not consider them PPE but uses words like environmental mitigation devices, which protects the manufacturers from being sued for failing to work as PPE.

Now, docs in surgery use masks to try and keep the surgical theater sterile. They do not use them to prevent virus contamination. A doc that sick would not be in the operating theater. A patient with a seriously dangerous airborne viral infection would be operated on by docs in bio suits.

The difference was that NYC deliberately juiced the Wuhan Flu numbers to create a panic and seem like Trump was failing, not the population density. There were dozens of stories from doctors and nurses about bogus virus deaths, even in a news service desperately trying to topple the president. Confirmed, real accounts like drug overdoses and alcohol poisoning, auto accidents etc being marked down as Wuhan Flu deaths.

321 People claim I'm wrong. Then please explain why that graph above is wrong. The Dakota's were spiking. Then, they implemented a mask mandate in mid November and their spike fell. That's what, a coincidence? A lie? Why post it here then?

I live in Seattle. At one point we were ground zero for COVID in America. We were the worst city in the country. Now we are the best large city. We also, again, coincidentally(?) have a high mask implementation.

I'm not making it up that you can spread COVID to others when you have no symptoms. It's not a fantasy. It's not a talking point. It's a fact.

Our State was one of the good ones. Our neighbor Idaho wasn't. When their hospitals got full, they started sending their dying to our hospitals. We never had to send out dying to their hospitals. I had to laugh/cry when later on, Jenny said the reason The People are not pushing their Senators super-hard to pass the relief pork bill is that the Administration has not done a good job communicating about all of the wonderful stuff in the bill.

Shades of the Obama Regime's recurring "communication with the plebs problems."
Then she said the bill must be passed soon anyway, and after Joe signs it, he and Kamala and DOCTOR Jill will work hard to explain all the wonderful things in the bill. So, another "We Must Pass The Bill So We Can Tell You What's In It" caper.

Yeah, the initial death counts were almost entirely nursing home counts, because someone would get it there, they had no proper medical protection or treatment, and it spread like wildfire among the very most vulnerable. This was treated as if it were proof we were all in danger (like the AIDS spread in the 80s among extremely promiscuous homosexuals was treated as proof we're all in danger). But this time, it worked.

391 One would think that with this narrative about "dead bodies being stacked like FIREWOOD" as a result of the KungFlu there would be, you know, some actual evidence of this. You would see full hospitals (every hospital I drive past in MA looks like a ghost town). You would have pictures of bodies stacked-up all over the place to add to the fear pron.

Instead, we're just told that bodies are piling up and nobody ever asks to see evidence of this.

And since the CDC won't release the numbers on deaths in 2020 - which means they have to be LOWER than 2019 - you have to wonder why it would be that "bodies are piling up" if they were never "piling up" in the past with higher death counts and whatnot.

Yeah that was the two weeks thing that we're celebrating the anniversary of. And did most states have plans for if cases spiked too high? No. Ohio has had a mask mandate since June. It didn't matter. We still spiked. Masks mean nothing because you can't stop and airborne virus with cloth masks. And spiking cases didn't mean more deaths. Ohio topped out at about 90% ICU usage. That happens some years with the flu.

Seattle is good now because the disease is over. It has nothing to do with masks. You keep repeating the mantra like it solves everything. It doesn't. Actually it is anti-science. You could have everyone dance naked in the rain right now and claim that made Kung Flu go away and it would be just as meaningless. Enjoy the cargo cult.

402 The mask goal posts are being readied to be moved as need be to benefit the narrative. Fauci, who is the left's gold standard, said this past week how crucial it was to absolutely stamp this out. This recalls his comments last year about needing to keep our foot on the gas when there was pressure to reopen things.

He's also talked about "some" lifting of restrictions and dropped signals about masks needed being needed indeterminately for variants that may spring up, etc.

Pressure may get them to keep reopening gradually, but they will never give up the ability to lock down, and they will fight fiercely for masks permanently. They may be forced to bend but they will never break.

406 Then, they implemented a mask mandate in mid November and their spike fell. That's what, a coincidence? A lie?

We've had mask mandates since April, and our cases spiked through the roof in December/January.

This is a classic science vs anti-science exchange.

The first is anti science: you cannot prove anything scientifically from a negative; that is, we don't know what would have happened had there been a mask mandate, because that's outside empirical evidence and into the realm of metaphysics. Its just guesswork.

However the second is scientific: your proposed solution did not help because the cases spiked despite the mandate.

One is belief in science as a blind faith. The other is based on actual science.

For a lot of the 1940's and 1950's, for example see the Smith Act passed on the eve of WWII, quite a few actions including firings etc of government employees was allowed. See Whitney v. California, Gitlow v. NY, and Schenk v. US.

It's also 1) Doing something just so you can say you're doing something; and 2) The knowledge that eventually, the virus will go away, as all viruses do, and if we keep mandating masks the whole time, we can take credit for the victory; and 3) The refusal to admit that they might have been wrong.

I think it largely works like this: these are people who never learned, and perhaps lack the capacity, for rational, systematic thought and are ruled by emotion and passion.

They fill their heads with random bits of sometimes contradictory nonsense and half-truths from places like MSNBC and memorize bits of them without any opposing viewpoint. 416 395 callsign claymore,
If you listened to Rush, read some writers on the conservative side, even the whale that ate Jonah, would often address the same topics after him, quoted him on occasion, and sometimes a few like the whale actually 'borrowed' his words to the extent of plagiarism. You will sometimes see some guarded references to working in DC among a few commenters as well. AOS is kind of a guilty pleasure among that set.

Yeah, the left really tapped into the zeigeist with this Wuhan Flu thing. 418 Cuomo has twin daughters that are 25 and another daughter that is 22. I guess he wanted to make sure that whoever he "dated" was the age of his daughter or above. If they have a good relationship with their mother I expect they think the whole thing is ridiculous and they are embarrassed by their father, because unless you're Mr. Studly (and he isn't ) or has a lot of money no 22 wants to date someone old enough to be their father.

424 No one is going to explain that Dakotas graph? Wearing masks doesn't help even though the implementation of a mask mandate directly caused a flattening of their curves?

Nothing works perfectly. Masks included. Sneezing into your elbow doesn't work perfectly either but it works better than sneezing freely.

And social distancing, keeping bubbles tight, washing hands, and masks are all just incomplete measures. But you can't say they don't work. They do.

Did Seattle spike around the holidays? Sure. A little. We had people gathering more than they typically do like anywhere during the holidays.

Why are you all such babies about being asked to wear a mask? It really does save lives. Watch what happens in two weeks in Texas. Watch.

425 I hate defending David French, but

("but": take whatever I just said and deep-six it)

but the fact is opposing masks absolutely WAS and IS virtue signalling. "muh rights", they yell, while steadfastly refusing to defend those rights in the only way that counts, with applied organized violence.

Then they get facial-recognized and kangaroo-courted because they weren't wearing masks. And they're all surprised.

Antifa has the uniforms they do for good and practical reasons. Livestreaming yourself engaging in an even purely symbolic infringement on the (in its own view) supreme governing class of this planet proves one and only one thing: that you are a dumbass and deserve what you're about to get.

In a non-tactical environment, wearing masks in a pandemic signals social solidarity. It signals you're on the side of the common man, It builds social cohesion. Not wearing masks signals obstreperousness and self-centeredness and political autism. Obstreperousness is a trait that can be tolerated and intellectually approved of in a prosperous society with a lot of latitude. It is absolutely unacceptable in a society with ever-eroding margins in everything.

Posted by: Rollory at March 05, 2021 04:01 PM (aXltx)

426 And political autism: what the hell else is this "muh rights" bullshit? Haven't any of you been paying attention? YOU AINT GOT NO RIGHTS. If you did, where the hell are they and why can't you make them stick?

The current process is filtering out a lot of the braindeadwood in the right. All those people getting rounded up by the FBI for Jan 6? Yeah, it sucks and it shouldn't be happening. AND ALSO THEY DESERVE IT, EVERY ONE, FOR NOT TAKING PROPER PRECAUTIONS IN AN INCIPIENT POLICE STATE, WHICH ANYBODY WITH EYES TO SEE COULD RECOGNIZE HAS BEEN BUILDING ITSELF FOR THE PAST TWENTY FUCKING YEARS.

Maybe longer. Twenty is how long I've been watching it. If longer, there's even less excuse.

Now stop defending cops.

436 A quibble. Mona Charen was hired by the Ethics and Public Policy Center in 2014, before Trump was an issue. She left in 2020. I'm going to wager she was on a succession of multi-year contracts and the last was not renewed.

I'd agree with you that she should never have been hired. She has no instruction in any of the tools of policy assessment nor could she write long-form discussions of normative questions. She earned a law degree she never used and has worked in word-merchant occupations ever since. She's David Frum in a skirt, bar that Frum is a satisfactory autodidact. After the summer of 2016, she was lousy publicity for any starboard cause, so there wasn't any excuse to continue to employ her.

437 Whelan is being obtuse.

The replies are an amazement. There is hardly any popular 'NeverTrump' strand of thought. It's a phenomenon among people on the payroll, be they politicians, political staff, lobbyists, or Acela corridor opinion journalists. Trump's approval ratings among Republicans in his last year were equal to Nixon's in 1972, Reagan's in 1984, and GW Bush's in 2004 - and well in excess of those of Ford in 1976 and Bush I in 1992. And not everyone in the dissatisfied 6% are inveterately hostile to the President a la David French. It appears about 3/4 of Ed Whelan's Twitter followers are. You never meet such people in meatspace.
