This morning's Deep Thought: Do you ever get up in the morning, look in the mirror and think “That can’t be accurate.

Good morning Horde. Just a couple of rules here in this open thread.

1B) No you can't use the inkwells.
2) No running with sharp objects.
3) Chew with your mouths closed.
4) Be nice to one another.
5)Clothing optional.
6)Opine and/or bloviate away
7) Have a great weekend!

21 Mornin', folk,

I haven't visited the Coffee Break thread in a while. What's new? Decaf Is Evil, yah, yah, we know all that. What else?

A cool bright morning here. A good shower and great shave; 3 eggs scrambled with a little butter, green chiles, and Mrs. Dash and pepper for seasoning; I managed to prepare my bacon *exactly* the way I like it, extra crispy and crunchy. Then a half-bowl of a new pipe tobacco (Edward G. Robinson's Blend, if it matters). Soon I need to go wash the car, but for the moment I'm relaxing. How about you?

29 After taking Doof's advice on Kensington coffee I figured out my Mr Coffee just wasn't capable of making it strong enough. French presses have pissed me off in the past by not keeping things hot enough so I bought, for not much, one of those stainless steel cones to pour boiling water over. Other than being kind of messy mission accomplished. Plus the coffee is tasty enough to drink it black with nothing added.

There's a stock photo running around the interwebs of four teenaged girls from the early seventies leaning against a muscle car. All have beautiful long hair, bell-bottoms, you know - 70's gear. Robins are out and about, the crocus are in bloom and the grill has been refurbished for the season coming up. The wife bought a "wind spinner" thingy yesterday that's very colorful. I'll be putting that together and finding a spot where we can watch it. Some of the outdoor furniture will come out of storage too.

Then, next week it will probably turn bitterly cold again and snow.

Secondly, by this time of day on this date in 1836, serial war criminal and elitist human rights violator "Napolean of the West" Mario Lopez de Santa Anna was having the last of the Alamo defenders bayoneted.

177 I thought Texas had an independent power grid. As an interesting thought experiment, what would have happened if Abbott had told the the criminal ERCOT, the EPA, and BiDong to eff off as he was ramping up the reserve power capability due to extreme weather predictions?
Posted by: Commissar Chairman Hrothgar ~ (@Hrothgar on GAB) at March 06, 2021 10:10 AM (87oRe)

They do but it still as to follow EPA pollution limits. The limits are based on prior years. So the fact the wind was up to over 25% in 2020 and 2019 got the numbers (pollution that is) reduced. When we asked to start up coal and gas, thus exceeded the limits, the answer was no. The correct answer should have been FOAD.

Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at March 06, 2021 10:14 AM (2DOZq)

The wind works in the summer. When the freeze shut down about half the windmills and we were not allowed to start up coal and gas, the rolling blackouts were required.

181 And, fellow Texans, let's be careful about the amount of scorn heaped on Greg Abbott over a weather event and what was essentially a lot of inconvenience. The Party that Openly Hates Us will use a weather event, like they always do, and the related inconvenience, to attack people that we mostly pay to leave us the f**k alone so the can get one of their Marxist Junta Cadres permanently elected in order to make every single aspect of our short existence on this planet tedious, miserable and stupid. Be very careful what you ask for, because you're going to get Beto O'Rourke, a fake Mexican and authentic Marxist want-to-be Despot.
Posted by: No Longer Amused at March 06, 2021 09:39 AM (vTW2/)

Yeah, sorry. Abbott and company deserve every single bit of shit they're receiving.

However, luckily for them there's an easy way out of this dilemma:

1) Harden the gas infrastructure so we don't have gas lines freezing

2) A lot of people use heat pumps, which are worse than useless in severe cold weather. "Emergency heat" places a YUGE strain on the grid and requires surplus power back-up in cold/winter conditions.

185 I'm trying to wrap my head around the multiple masking phenomenon and can see two plausible rationales.

1. The total number of masks in society is a fixed constant. For each person who frees themselves of the mask, a new additional mask appears on the face of a masker. In essence the maskers would bear the "sins" of the non-maskers (I would have no problem with this in reality)

2. Each additional mask adds an increment of distance between the wearer and others. The natural endpoint of this effect would obviously be a stack of masks on your face that measures a linear distance of 6 feet, thus delineating the required safe distance for all face-to-face interactions. I'm estimating it will take approximately 2,100 masks to total 72 inches.

2 a) forget useless, underpowered windmills and solar panels - do not buy anymore useless baubles.

b) build more gas powered plants
c) change laws and sue to open at least 3 new nuke power plants
d) reinstate the 3 coal powered plants shut down by Obama.

Mix and match the above. And extreme heat and/or cold are no problem.

3) Most important - harden and simplify Texas' grid and keep it independent of the national grid. Biden's late nonresponse means that he's continuing Obama's policy of malicious neglect for states which didn't vote for him.

Easy peasy. But, will Abbott do it. Or, does he want to collect more fake awards from Big Wind.

Yeah, it's a very sad read. It's been obvious for awhile that the Democrats are preparing to use bloodshed as their endgame.

Both the arming of the people's capitol, Washington DC, and the certification of true Democrat believers in both the officer and enlisted corps alone prove that.

One reason why Texas electric grid being totally independent is a must. "Frisky" areas will simply have their electricity shut off as a first step.

I absolutely believe in the voting system as constituted for peaceful change but the Democrats don't and worse, all their actions point to violence if history is any guide.

Just sad really.

254 When the windmills failed the gas and coal plants were supposed to kick in. Oh, we dismantled and sold those coal plants to chyna. Then the natural gas plants kick in...oops, we accidentally cut power to the gas plants we need to make electricity so they can't produce/provide the gas needed to make electricity... so. Much. Failure.
Let's not even get into the "Enron-clone" energy market we have going on to top everything off....

256 Hi Grammie,

I have no idea about WI either, much of it may be county by county. Just don't mention that you have kids with you, otherwise people freak out. I don't know. Racine schools may finally be "open" again, but I have no idea if open just means herding the kids into the buildings and forcing them to watch their computers there. Thank God for Scott Walker & open enrollment & voucher expansion. The legislature voted this week to expand the Milwaukee /Racine rules to the entire state. On one hand, I'm sure Evers will veto, on the other, I can't help but think it's an issue more moderate Dems might peel off to - after all, I don't suppose your random Dem, say in Eau Claire or Ashland or wherever wants to tell constituents that their kids would be eligible for vouchers if they lived in those two districts, but nowhere else. My eldest 2 are in a WELS school through the program, it's a good school and gives them a reason to get up in the morning. They need that desperately right now.

A/C pulls from electricity, I wonder if emergency heat is pulling from electricity or natural gas and if that would make a difference in "balancing". Do newer houses still have heat pumps, or just older ones, since age of the house is a good indicator of the type of heating used.

Most places I go, I think they only post the signs because of the rule.

It's hard to imagine that more electricity was needed during the winter storm than is needed during 100 degree heatwaves we have in Texas quite frequently.

Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at March 06, 2021 10:14 AM

Not really - say 70 degree inside temperature is desired. On a 100 degree day you want to reduce the temperature by 30 degrees. On a 10 day day you want to raise the temperature by 60 degrees. These combination heat pump/air conditioning units in so many homes in Texas became inefficient at around 35 degrees outside temperature, necessitating resistance heat backup - which is the highest energy waster of them all.

The best answer? Fossil fuel like natural gas as backup.

325 Several points of failure;

Wind turbines iced and ceased operating (and a lot were down anyways, which was going to happen eventually in any season... they subsidize building them, not maintaining them), some of the backup capacity either wasn't winterized or got erroneously hit by intentional blackouts (including some nuke capacity), and the feds refused to allow ERCOT to maximize backup output (by relaxing emissions) and insisted they keep playing shell games about buying "green power", with the pencil pushers not understanding that if you fuck up and drop a ball while juggling you start having plants go down that will take weeks to restart.

And worse yet - a LOT of refining capacity had catastrophic crashes and failures as a result of weather issues or power loss. Some of that is going to take months to get back on line. It's kind of a cross behind Atlas Shrugged and the start of Red Storm Rising.

Think Scott Adams (Dilbert) said that in every job he ever had, he was planning on how to move on to a better job. Still sounds like a good idea!

In what context is he telling us this? I was joking the other day, I'm not sure what level of alert we're at now, with the Covids, saying maybe we're at mauve or sashay pink or whatever... but I thought I was kidding. (One has to be careful who one tells these kinds of jokes around, of course, lest we be put in the gay H8ER camp)

336 " reinstate the 3 coal powered plants shut down by Obama."

how many did they shut down nationwide, I wonder. Merodosia, IL had a coal fired plant .. there were big plans to install a system to bury the CO2 or some nonsense ... that fell apart (probably after funding other friends of the left for a billion or two). Illinois is very coal rich ... and very broke from paying all those golden early retirement packages for government workers (that often don't work very effectively, as in "Jaunny can't read")

338 The best thing about being retired ( for the time being) is I don't have anyone constantly telling me what to do and monitoring everything ( government regulations) . It was never about the actual work.
Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at March 06, 2021 11:16 AM (2DOZq)

I'm one of these people who has said I'll never retire, but as time ticks on, I find myself more and more in the "I'm too old for this shit" category.

I love what I do. I hate the bean counters who contribute NOTHING to the work. And bosses who can't think beyond counting beans. You're ruining this world, you jackasses.

342 Don't try to hang on to something that is crappy. I think we all fall into that trap. I had people (friends) tell me to start looking when I was not ready. Old paradigms don't work these days. People jump ship at a drop of a hat and no one gives a damn. As long as you have a good story. Finding something suitable takes time anyway. May take a year if you start now.
