Buzzfeed: NYT "Obama Republican" David Brooks Took Money from FaceBook Then Wrote Positively About FaceBook Without Disclosing His Financial Reliance on the Monopoly Corporation

He also took money from Jeff Bezos' father, so I'm pretty sure I know what's going on here.

Another corporate fake-conservative on the payroll of mega-monopolies.

NEW: NYT columnist David Brooks draws a second salary for leading an Aspen Institute project funded by Facebook, Jeff Bezos' dad, & others. He didn't disclose this to readers. The Times refused to say if the paper was aware of Brooks' second salary:

Facebook Helped Fund David Brooks’s Second Job. Nobody Told The Readers Of The New York Times.
The New York Times columnist has been using his perch to promote the Weave Project -- without disclosing his potential conflicts of interest to his readers.
buzzfeednews.com

Facebook gave $250,000 in 2018 to help fund Weave, Brooks' project at the Institute. A few months later Brooks began promoting Weave in the Times. He never disclosed the FB money, his salary, or other funders. Weave received just over 1.5 million in 2018, the latest $$ available.

Along with columns about Weave, Brooks published Times columns that mention Facebook, its founder Mark Zuckerberg, and the company’s products without disclosing his financial ties to the social networking giant.

"We're in the process of reviewing David's relationship with the Weave Project and the Aspen Institute, and what disclosures, if any, should be added to David's columns going forward," said Eileen Murphy, the SVP of corporate communications for the Times.

A strange thing we found is that in 2019 Brooks wrote *sponsored content* for an event that he appeared at that year. Who did he share the stage with? A Facebook employee. This came at a time when Weave was funded by the social media giant:

The Work of Weaving Old Power and New

In trying to foster a grassroots movement, New York Times columnist David Brooks finds that elite institutions need to give up their power -- while taking on the supporting roles of illuminators....

ICYMI last week we revealed that Brooks wrote a blog post for FB's corporate site that gave a a very positive view of FB Groups.

Last week I noted that FaceBook was now sponsoring National Review. National Review has yet to respond to this, or explain why it is now taking money from another organization it covers. (National Review has long, long taken money from Google.)

It would seem that these monopolies understand that Republican voters are now considering enforcing anti-trust laws against them, so they're pouring money into the pockets of fake-conservative "thought leaders" and influence-peddlers.

So don't expect National Review to ever say "boo" about one of their paymasters' censorship/thought control operations:

As with all whores: They sold their virtue cheaply.

21 How the F anyone could take Brooks seriously after his "pants crease" idiocy is unfathomable. Or maybe illustrative of how dumbed-down and sub-mediocre the "punditocracy" and the public square - and much of the public, especially the self-designated "elites" - have become.

Of course taking Brooks or any of his ilk seriously *before* the implausibly stupid and humiliating "pants crease" nonsense was inexplicable, too.

And Farcebook and Goolag and everybody else face Zero prospect of any action against them now. End of story. Many call this election a "catastrophe" for very good specific reasons.

These journalist types have a great grift going. Use their media credentials to get in the door, then ingratiate themselves to make some lucre on the side, while logrolling for their patrons to keep themselves valuable.

Between politicians, nonprofit foundations, educators and journalists, you've got quite a gilded class of takers that have taken the commanding heights of our society.

It is known in certain circles as taking the ticket. If you take the money (or give up sex, do illegal acts, turnover information requested, etc.), then you agree to play ball and the people that pay you--own you-lock, stock, and barrel. If you don't, you do not get the opportunities ever again and become a nobody.

You see a selection bias toward those who took the ticket in the public arena because those that haven't have to work their ass off like most of us to keep afloat with some rare exceptions.

There is a reason that when many of the ticket takers demonstrate their incompetence, avarice, stupidity, or other failings, it is usually dismissed by the media until it is time to get burned (see Cuomo for example).

It was both Cuba and in China, and approximately 45 employees were severely sickened with headaches, nausea, tinnitus and fluid leaking from their ears. MRIs later showed significant brain damage in a number of those cases. Those people will not live out their years in good health.

Apparently there was some rat and insect problem in the neighbkrhood due to poor cleanliness and the govt was spraying pesticides multiple times per week. 139 111 18-1, you are correct that it generally starts small when someone of interest has been located by actions, deed, or being in the right position at the right time.

Same dynamic in corporations, school systems, government bureaucracy, etc.

An offer will be tentatively floated as a vague quid pro quo if you compromise yourself. Once you do, you indicate that you are willing to play ball. It could be informing on your buddies, it could be giving some critical information up, it could be writing or speaking in a persuasive way, etc.

There are many paths to hell and only a straight and narrow one for salvation. That generally requires trimming ambitions to fit your moral principles rather than the other way round.

Really our only hope is that what the oligarchs/the left want is so absurd it forces a reaction from the populace as a whole.

For some, this is certainly true. For many more, though, it isn't even that. They don't want to live in a free society, they want to live in a society where they are taken care of and relieved of the responsibility that having choices demands. There are a ton of people who don't want to rule things but they very much want to be ruled so as to be absolved of the responsibility for living. These people are mental slaves and they fear and loathe anything approaching liberty.

194 153. I think they will find a big loss of audience the longer Rushs funeral goes on. Having some Rush backup is fine but it looks more like they cannot find a suitable guest host people want to listen to and so Rush is the default. It would make more sense to have a Rush monologue at the opening then have just the guest host and callers discuss the rest of the show. Of course monologue has to relate to current events.

Bing is more responsive recently on most things or those search engines that route stuff through google such as DuckDuckGo or startpage. Startpage, at least, is in Euro land which has more EU restrictions on data sharing between Startpage and Googul.

Brave on phones uses duckduckgo from the get go.

And yes, I know that DuckDuckGo has questionable financing. I am also aware of onion, tor, etc.

262 bonhomme, it depends on what you are searching for. I seek non commercial type information primarily and Googul sucks at that with their obnoxious search ordering. DuckDuckGo actually uses googul but supposedly searches lack individual identifiers.

Startpage is pretty good to and is similar to DuckDuckGo.
Qwant is good for some Euro information searches and I have used Yippy on occasion. Yippy gives some odd results compared to others as it uses Watson search technology rather than a google base. The Watson technology uses clustering, kind of like a library book search where you see the volumes and book titles surrounding the book that you want. Googul uses page rank which is based on the herd popularity and paid/Googul influencing.

Startpage and DuckDuckGo suffer a bit with Googul simply because if you use Googul, it builds a profile of your searches b based on history and it affects the page ranking results sent to you (unless Googul circumvents it). The avoidance of personal identifiers in Startpage and DuckDuckGo means that you forgo that advantage theoretically.

1) is this not just another case of "we're passing laws to make things DOUBLE illegal when they were already illegal before!"

One very intriguing thing that garnered little attention, as far as I could tell, was that video of a GA election worker, during the afternoon, looking under a table, finding what appeared to be the boxes he was looking for, shoving them back under, and then doing a "yes!" muted celebratory thing with his posture and expression.

WTF could that possibly have been, that was innocent?

355 298 bonhomme, I have access to paid databases as well as the free stuff so what Googul has to offer, other than stuff out of the books that they scanned in the past, simply does not compare. For a lot of the rest of it, I use Bing, Startpage, DuckDuckGo, and a few others depending on what I am seeking. If you do want to cross reference something, try Yippy which can be fast as it limits to three pages of results but it does not censor your search and if you are in one particular cluster of information, it can be very useful.

I grew up with database technology so I can do search terms pretty well and the move to natural language is simply a nuisance generating more false hits. Googul scholar used to be decent but I think that Googul has abandoned much improvement in it like other orphaned projects.

Lynne has explained that he is singing a made-up word, "Grooss", which some have suggested sounds like the German expression "Gruß," meaning "greeting." Lynne has explained that originally he did not realize the meaning of the syllable, and he just used it as a temporary placekeeper to fill a gap in the lyrics, but upon learning the German meaning he decided to leave it in.

This sounds like retconned bullcrap, and a weak one at that.

The more controversial the field, the less effective Googul is using page rank. Bing has actually picked up its general applicability better than Googul.

Paid databases are generally better overall than any free engine. for idiosyncratic searches. I have also found Yippy to be strangely useful in some cases of scientific papers but sometimes useless and very slow.

443 420 I knew Gates grew up well off but I think Bezos was middle class. His mom was a teenager when he was born. Single mom, married step dad. Moved around a lot. Not exactly a Kennedy or anything.
Posted by: Joe XiDen at March 04, 2021 02:11 PM (Xrpa4)

Bezos' stepfather wasn't a Kennedy-type, but he was an oil executive who traveled abroad a lot - for Exxon IIRC. He was rich enough that he had 300K lying around to lend to his son when he needed it.

445 422 Dot short for Dorothy for the most part, I thought.

In school the teacher was going over short names: Sue from Susan, Sam from Samuel or Samantha, Bob from Robert, when a girl raised her hand and asked "How do you get Dick from Richard". Without missing a beat the teacher replied "Why don't you go ask him?".
Posted by: Reuben Hick at March 04, 2021 02:12 PM (nhfjb)

That's funny! And it's the sort of raunchy joke that flies over children's heads, too.

The answer is, it was just common to substitute the first letter of a name to create a new nickname. It's also how you get Bob from Robert, or Ted and Ned from Edward. It's probably because they didn't have as many common first names in the past, and often needed to distinguish between multiple Edwards and Richards and Roberts.

Being gay then was a safe way to be dangerous and thus an individual.

Cuckery is rooted in conformity to someone else's standards (imagined conservative intellectual / true liberal safe pawn) so it reactive and fake, rather than natural.

These days even gayness is groupthink conformist crew, so guys like Milo have no standing.
