Jeff Bezos Would Owe $5.7 Billion In Taxes for 2020 under Elizabeth Warren's "Ultra-Millionaire" Tax Plan, Claims CNBC

This can't possibly be right?

Can it?

Josh Caplan
@joshdcaplan

CNBC: Bezos would owe $5.7 billion in taxes for 2020 under Ultra-Millionaire Tax Act

Look, I'm in favor of this.

Why it matters: The plan, which Warren introduced along with Reps. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) and Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.) is similar to a proposal that was the centerpiece of Warren's campaign for the presidency in 2020.

Warren, a new member of the Senate Finance Committee, has long sought a tax increase on millionaires and billionaires in the U.S.

By the numbers: The bill would levy a 2% tax for people with a net worth between $50 million and $1 billion. Taxpayers with assets worth over $1 billion would be subject to a 3% tax.

The tax would not apply to people whose net worth is below $50 million.

The bill's sponsors estimate that it would raise $2.75 trillion in tax revenue over a ten-year period.

Not only have they conspired to rig an election, but they further used their wealth to propagandize for endless lockdowns which absolutely crushed middle-class and even somewhat wealthy business owners while making exorbitant profits for themselves.

For me, this isn't about "fairness" or even raising revenue.

It's about survival.

If billionaires are going to use their money to take away my political voice, I will use my political voice to take away their money.

Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg can get their tax protection from the Democrats they spend hundreds of millions of dollars to put into office.

As far as I'm concerned, the Republican Tax Protection Store is closed. For good.

I'd also like to slap an 80% surtax on any profits made by trade with China.

Because: Fuck You. War.

60 The Revenue Act of 1913 lowered average tariff rates from 40 percent to 26 percent. It also established a one percent tax on income above $3,000 per year; the tax affected approximately three percent of the population.

This was how many people were affected when the income tax was first instituted. Because 97% of the population didn't have to pay it, they had no problem passing it.

A century later, of course, that tax affects everyone.

President Biden took a swipe at Republican governors in Texas and Mississippi Wednesday, accusing them of "Neanderthal thinking" following their decision to reverse COVID safety policies, including mask mandates.

"We've been able to move that all the way up to the end of May to have enough [vaccines] for every American, to get every adult American to get a shot," Biden told reporters from the White House Wednesday. "The last thing we need is the Neanderthal thinking."

Despite the warning issued by health officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding a fourth resurgence in coronavirus cases earlier this week, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said all state regulations would be lifted starting Wednesday.

124 Once again, wealth is not money.

Wealth is property, and its dollar value stems from the owner's ability to (a) manage said property for a profit and (b) sell said property in a market that respects property rights.

Confiscatory taxation transfers property into the hands of those who don't know how to manage it, and confiscatory taxation denies property rights.

To redistribute wealth is to destroy it.

Long story behind the 16A. In a nutshell, taxes on property are direct taxes and by the Constitution MUST be apportioned. Courts have long held that taxes on income are not direct taxes UNTIL one court went off the reservation and ruled that income derived from property (like rent) WAS THE SAME AS PROPERTY, therefore a tax on that income is the same as a tax on the property itself and must be apportioned. To get around that, frankly, stupid ruling, the 16A said taxes on income did not need to be apportioned. That's really it - Congress still has the power to tax income even without the 16A via its general taxing power.

173 A wealth tax is totally unworkable. Suppose you're above the threshold by virtue of owning Enron (or Tesla) stock, and you have to pay through the nose.

Then those stocks collapse, and become worthless. Now what? Do you get money back? If so, how much? If not, why not?

A wealth tax is idiotic, because it is a tax on unrealized gains.

That is where it will end up, but it will end up there anyway sans other meaningful changes. Such a scheme has another huge benefit to the ruling class: it prevents you from checking out.

If you want to quit your job and still your life decently, you need a fair amount of money socked away. Taking it over a given threshold that is *less* than enough to do that - say at $100k or $200k - prevents the serfs from checking out, working at the 7-11 for minimum wage and benefits, and dipping into the savings when the house needs a roof or somesuch.

It will also kill any aspiration to get rich by doing well, but they don't care.

Will there be a middle class in ten years? Five years? Valid question I think, since they are destroying jobs like Godzilla in Tokyo.

/plus, the WEF wants every nation to be clean and third world.

312 Notice how they hide the ball. It's not an INCOME tax, it's a WEALTH tax. So if you save and invest, when they lower the threshold, you'll get screwed, whereas people who piss away every dime they make will be fine, just fine, thanks for asking.
Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara

I get your point, but the same argument can be used against income tax. Or even sales tax with a stretch. "So, if you work hard for every dime you get taxed, but if you live off the state you will be just fine."

The main legitimate argument against wealth tax is that it encourages money to leave the jurisdiction. Pretty good argument, that. But yours is just myopic. (sorry, but that is my opinion.)

As to the movie, what was its point? It was utter, imaginary fiction, so why any reference at all to known historical figures? 378 I don't have a problem going after contemporary oligarchs anymore. Their vast wealth and power usurps the lower classes so much - by their own hands and design - that clawing some back doesn't seem like the offense it's classically described to be.

Sure, it might be implemented poorly, but it might not. And it's probably time to test the process because if there's going to be pain, let's ALL enjoy it.

As to the movie, what was its point? It was utter, imaginary fiction, so why any reference at all to known historical figures? Yes, they can raise revenues, if marginal tax rates are very low. A zero rate obviously gets the government nothing. Likewise, a very high rate also gets the government almost nothing, because people evade taxable transactions (everything that can moves to the black market). If you wanted to maximize tax revenue, there is an "optimum" rate in each bracket somewhere in between a very low rate and a very high rate.

She kept repeating it's only a few cents, who can't pay a few cents when you have billions in wealth?

She also claims the bill will include the entire of assets of the rich, including any offshore assets. Everything, stock, business ownership fractions, hard assets such as real estate boats, etc.

She wants the money to be used for free universal pre K and free college.

450 As the debt and inflation rises, expect more and more draconian tax laws from local, state, and federal officials. Tax breaks are going to be killed. If you are in California, figure that the Prop 13 has little time left to live, and so on. Those of you with grannie and grandpa property tax breaks, well, with a bunch of young ones with no care about older Americans, expect and will vote for those to be trimmed back and gone as well.

It is coming and no constitutional prohibitions are going to stop it. Need to start figuring out asset protections etc. now regardless of the level of wealth that you have. Spiking tax rates, new 'assessments', new taxes, etc. are coming down the pike. The only derailment that I see is if we have a spontaneous fast crash of the entire system both politically and financially which will reset a lot of those asset values anyway.

We will end up as poor as post WWII Britain and that is if we are lucky. Learn to grow some of your own food is my recommendation or have a way to trade valuable skills in a wrecked economy to get it.

It's also fun to see some films again that my son hasn't seen. One of the ones we watched was "Stagecoach" with John Wayne-a very fine film. 456 Some of you are thinking too small.

One, as the courts just established with respect to Donald Trump, there's no right to privacy for the ultra rich. So rather than just saying "oh, they'd just use their fancy pants lawyers to evade the tax", let's make it a requirement to do it publicly. Anyone nominated by more than five citizens, with an established net worth of > $50 million, would be subject to this and the details of the tax exercise would be published on a government website.

Two, a single-digit percentage is fine on an ongoing basis (with a cap of 90% of that year's income), but in Year One, it needs to be something like 80% or 90%. These entitlements won't pay for themselves. So we take 90% of the wealth of Buffet and Gates et al, and then they can build it back at 10% of their income per year.

I don't know about you but nothing sounds as sweet as being FAIR.

Thank W and Teddy Kennedy. When No Child Left Behind was implemented, the Principal of a failing school was given the equivalent of "3 strikes and you're out". What is easier for a Principal, striving for student achievement, or lowering standards and making test easier to pass? Even my rural, red county school district allows students to retake any test. And they don't get a different test. They get the exact same test.

In my day, if you missed school on the day of a test, the test you took was nowhere near the same test the others took when you were absent.

It seems to me that would make the saber shiny and pretty, but not sure it would outperform Sharpen saber.

504 I have a friend that's really into that japanese sword fighting martial art, I don't remember it's name. But he's been in it for decades and is pretty experienced. Listening to him it was in old Japan like drawing guns in a stand-off. Draw sword, foot work, thrust, and we're done because some-one is dead. Anything less would be dishonorable. I imagine it looks a lot like an attack in fencing without all the erotic screaming.
Posted by: banana Dream at March 03, 2021 04:58 PM (y8LA9)

There's a scene in one of Webers SF Honor Harrington books where there is a Japanese style duel like that - the two stay motionless and the idea is to see when the other has decided to strike and react to that decision first and cut him down. No fencing at all.

514 479 I think with 401(k)s the kill-shot is going to be the government demanding that a certain % of your asset allocation be diverted into special government bonds, where you are paid below-market fixed rates at the time you hit a certain retirement age. It will be sold as "income protection" for those who don't know how to invest their money better.

In reality, your 401(k) money will be plowed into government spending in exchange for an ultimately-worthless IOU.

519 and moronic 'consevatives' and 'republicans' will fucking oppose this, because it is indeed the stupid party. We saw this when they jumped into lefty's trap re: minimum wage.

The correct response to this (besides cheering it) is to not vote. The GOP should abstain. Let Lefty bring this to the floor, let lefty vote for this, and then let lefty explain to their donors why lefty is fucking them.

But again, our morons will cry about 'muh free market' and defend these oligarchs who are our political enemies. #NeverGOP
