Breitbart: China’s state-run Global Times bragged Sunday that Chinese companies are making a fortune selling syringes and needles to the United States during the coronavirus pandemic, a tidal wave of imports that makes a mockery of “the U.S. government’s attempt to get rid of the Chinese supply chain.” The Global Times quoted U.S. officials admitting in congressional testimony that 80 percent of the needles and syringes used in the United States, and about 90 percent of the supplies purchased worldwide, originate from China. Chinese officials said China’s factories produce hundreds of thousands of syringes a day.

What's more, President Biden removed all mentions of Seuss from Read Across America Day - held on Dr. Seuss' March 2 birthday. Per ABC “The impetus for the city’s reparations resolution, first passed in 2019 and spearheaded by 5th Ward Alderman Robin Rue Simmons, is rooted partially in Rue Simmons’ experience growing up Black in Evanston.” Rue recalled “Early in my childhood I was invited to have a play date. My white friends never had a play date at my home.” She said when visiting a white friend’s neighborhood “the streets were wider. The trees were taller. The homes were bigger and brighter.” “As a young child, I recognized that difference,” she added.

A damaging new police report says state Rep. Sharon Har “smelled of alcohol” during her drunken driving arrest on Monday night, yelled “Black Lives Matter” at officers and told them she was going to be the next governor. What kills me about blue states like NY is that the only reason the Leftists will never vote Republican is that they're afraid that abortions will be criminalized in the state. I still haven't figured out the metrics in play. If it were the I-15 corridor it would make some sense! It seems to depend on the number of cases present. St. George just opened up restaurants to 100% occupancy this past weekend. But masks and "social distancing" are still required at far too many places. But go to a rodeo or outdoor event and you will not see masks.

I have an old cloche (a ceramic baking dome) that I got from my in-laws. I use it for baking sourdough. The thing is ancient, and before I could use it the first time, the handle broke off. It's still usable, but it'd be much easier to use if I could lift the lid with just one hand.
Anyway, I need an adhesive that is strong enough to lift the dome, and can withstand sustained heat in excess of 500 degrees. I'm thinking maybe sodium silicate (aka water glass), but I can't find definitive info on it's performance under the above conditions.
Anyone have experience with Na2SiO3? Any other ideas?

I'd ask a local glassblower at a nearby university with a chem department. Water glass is hard to fix, borosilicate glass is much easier, in my experience.
Gorilla Glue may not have the top temperature, but I am not sure. Sounds like product info should have that data.

Long but funny story. When I was a platoon leader, my RTO rotated out and I got a new guy. He went home on emergency leave and I had the old RTO fill in while he was gone. So we had to cross a large marshy area and there was a "sniper" (using that term loosely; he probably had a Mosin-Nagant or SKS using iron sights) too far away for effective aimed fire. So the first squad leads, all spread out. Then comes the platoon headquarters gaggle with all the radios and forward observers and machine guns and what not. Then the second and third squads follow, all spread out. So naturally, the "sniper" starts plinking at the platoon headquarters. With every shot, my RTO had a wise crack. Pow, splash. "Thank you, sir, I really enjoyed that one." Pow, splash. "That was a good one, sir." Pow, splash. "One of these is going to hit, sir." You have to love the American soldier's sense of gallows humor.

I just looked up JB Weld and apparently it can withstand continuous heat up to 500 deg... maybe I could use it and just bake my bread at 475 for a little buffer...

Greeting from a fresh, bare metal Fedora 33 Linux install on my screamer here. I did pretty good I think, getting a Linux install up and running from scratch in less than a day(well, almost, home partition wasn't formatted, so a lot of the config was preserved, but all software had to be installed).
The reason was crypto paranoia. I had an older install to bare metal which I hadn't updated in over a year or so, running Linux mostly in VMs. But it turns out that for maximum crypto key generation peace of mind, you want to generate keys and that stuff on bare metal, not under a virtual machine.
I think that concern is mostly paranoia (unless you're running VMs hosted on server farms and that sort of thing). Mostly.

Dynamic DNS services eliminate that need. For example, for my VPN tunnels, I just register a hostname with the DDNS service, and have a client on the routers that periodically checks in and updates the IP addresses if necessary.

Usually what happens if you've got a discrete router/modem is it keeps renewing the DHCP lease and the server has no issue with this, unless it's turned off for a while or--as you say--an outage hits the server and forces it to reissue IPs.

Sodium silicate isn't a great adhesive. There are a number of high temp adhesives on Amazon or ebay that can handle 550 F, silicone or epoxy based...
I'd lean towards the silicone ones myself. If you want to be sure though, go with a ceramic based adhesive. Use this search term -- high temp ceramic adhesives

Many of the DDNS services are free -- I use afraid.org's FreeDNS thingy. If you want your own domain name, you'll pay for that anywhere, but FreeDNS has many subdomains you can attach your own hostnames to.
I use the "ignorelist.com" domain, but they have a bunch of others. I basically come up with crazy host name, but one I can remember, which I ain't tellin' of course. I can access my router and VPN from anywhere. And I use non-standard ports and other obscure shit for SSH key authentication.

With Charter here, if your modem goes offline for more than about hour, there's a chance it will give you a different IP address, the longer the greater that chance.
A situation I'm not sure of is if the router goes offline but the modem stays on. Usually when one goes down the other does with a power outage.

You'll notice the "Mzdiz" hash. That's for the new IPv4 address here at the new house. That will likely stay the same indefinitely.
Something I remember that will change the IP address if you change your router. If the MAC address changes and maybe some other info, the system will not give you the same address. When I switched the firmware in my Linksys over to OpenWRT, it caused that to change, and thus the hash here.

I don't know if any of you fool around with IPv6, but it's a totally different ballgame. More complex, but much more flexible. An IPv6 address is 128 fucking bits long. Basically the high order 64-bits are the public part, and then every private network has 64 lower order bits to do with as it pleases.
With 64-bits, you do the math, 2^64th possible addresses. The problem of IP address exhaustion is solved.
Most ISPs provide that automatically if your modem and routers do.
Note with IPv6 there is no NAT (masquerading), where you get one public IP address, and your private network is behind that with your router running the NAT translation and making all the traffic look like it's coming and going through one sole IP address.
With IPv6, your router acts like a real router, and your computers have their own unique public IP addresses.

Look at FreeDNS, and there are others. Again, if you want your own domain name, you'll have to pay for it. But a simple hostname attached to some shared domain name can be had for free.
And learn thee Linux. It has all the tools -- free -- to do just about anything you want to do. Roll your own servers of all kind, all the crypto tools and all that. You don't have to depend on anybody for anything, save for the pipes you spew your data down, of course.

I'm not any more worried about IPv6 than IP4. The much larger address space makes it very difficult for the port scanners to work. If you look your router's firewall logs and just look at all the crap coming in, which the firewall should be dropping silently, you'll see it's hackers just randomly walking the IP address space and hitting ports with various known exploits. You can look up the port info from the logs and find out what exploit they were trying.
That shit goes on constantly.
With 64-bits of prefix and another 64-bits behind that, that random walking of the space isn't very productive.

One questionable thing they did in some of the original standards was the method for automatic IPv6 address generation. There are many ways to generate them, something like DHCP is there, and there are others, SLAAC (stateless) being a common one. A machine that comes on the network gets a 64-bit prefix from the router(and may get several of them), and then the machine generates it's own lower 64-bits and registers it (possibly) with the router and DNS (local subnet).
Of course that has to be unique so someone came up with the helpful idea of using the MAC address. That's 48-bits, and they came up with some algorithm to expand that to 64. How convenient. You now would send out a unique ID all over the place.
Bob@NSA had nothing to do with planting that idea, I'm sure.
Anyway, that was quickly realized and they came up with privacy extensions. The machine generates a random "temporary" address, which has a limited life span.
With IPv6, your machine has far more than one address. This Linux install has 8 on the main network interface (this machine actually has three network "cards" built into the mobo -- I use the others for VMs).

I'm a piker with the stuff, and there's now way I would charge a cent for anything I'd try to set up, 'cause I couldn't guarantee it. It's not to hard to protect yourself from your run of the mill script-kiddie hackers and the like, but if you wanted protection from some serious hackers, not to mention Bobbi or Fred@NSA I would not be the man to do it. I've said given the coming deluge, we're all going to have think like the French Resistance. And for internet and communications, that means rolling one's own encryption and email servers and the like, and not depend on any of Big Tech's commercial services.
What needs to be done is a network not of a bunch of clients connected to be central hub/servers, but a network of individuals all with their own little servers and stuff. A network of millions of little busy bees.
I'm thinking about how that might work. I'd need a lot of help. Basically our own underground communication network.

Bonus, you get to add a node to your network, and I get more than the local call-out PC network nobodies are likely to deliver. For me, it is WORTH IT, warranty or not. Intel has been putting "computers inside your computers" since 2008. In the freaking chipset now, the standard Intel chipset. It's a little 32-bit x86 CPU of its own inside the chipset. It runs its own little OS, a MINIX variant (they think, as this is all Intel proprietary secrets).
Anyway, the ME has its own little channel to the Ethernet chips, and it's own MAC address. The ME can be communicating when the main system is off (it has to have power, and standby will do it).

I'm glad I did, but it was scary; I hate to fly. We were going out to CA for my older sister's wedding, so flying DC to San Fran, and the pilot came on and did one of those "If you look up ahead, we are approaching the Grand Canyon", so I leaned and peered and saw this amazing crack in the surface of the earth (we were 30K ft up? high), and as we got closer, he says "for you on the right side of the plane" and tilts over on one side, then "and for you on the left" and 180s on over. It was maybe 40 years ago, and I can still see that huge rift on the surface of the earth, and still feel my heart jump into my throat at how he gave us that amazing experience.

Trees cost money. They take time to grow. A long time to grow. They aren't free. They need maintenance. They need care. They are an investment, they need "health care". All those "the trees were taller" areas - all the suburban landscape trees were very quickly cut down and burned for firewood, as their infrastructure collapsed. A good sized tree bucked up, split and seasoned will get a family through a hard winter I reckon.

While I was a computer nut every since my Clempson Cow College days, and still am, I had an instinctive dislike of what is now called social media, and on the hardware side, instinctively disliked and wanted nothing to do with smart phones.
I can't say I saw all this coming, but there was something instinctive there that made me stay away. I don't really like cell phones in general either. I'll never have a smart phone. Those thing are embedded spying devices from the get go, a totalitarian's wet dream cum true.
You've got to hand it to 'em. They got people to voluntarily, and with enthusiasm, carry around Big Brother telescreens everywhere they go, and can't live a moment without them.

I've harvested less since, but at age 3 and 4, was digging Idaho Potatoes (Idaho Falls, ID), with the fambly, even IF I dug only two and collapsed into tears and wanted to be bundled back into the comparably warm car, thereafter.
I can also recite the address of that house, draw a floor plan and note the names of our neighbors from then. I was then and remain now, a Weird Kid.

my guess is no, but i doubt it matters too much. I realize some canned ingredients do better after they are rinsed, as some of the preserving ingredients can be a bit funky. I don't know about capers. But I don't use them very often. I do know that some people washing fruits and vegatables with soap on water. Yeah that is overkill and probably making things worse. But people go their own way.
I did some checking and some say you should rinse them. My honest opinion is to go with your gut here. If you rinse them, it wont make a hell of a difference. I always wondered if you should rinse shrimp or not.

OPSEC is something we are going to have to get familiar with. I'm sure some still think I'm over the top, but we are soon going to have think and act like the French Resistance. We are going to be hunted, hated enemy in our own land.
Rule #1 of OPSEC is keep the smart phones away. If you're meeting with like minded folk to discuss things, no smart phones. All that location data would easily let them figured out who the cell was.

thanks so much AK. he was a real warrior. I take pride in that he lasted 12 years. That is as long as president Reagan lasted with that horrible disease. He was in great physical shape, which is a blessing. If i could have even another hour with him, it would mean everything. I lost my mom too. The irony is here maladies were physical. one thing my mom lamented it while my dad cared for her through so many physical problems, she could not reciprocate when he got ill.
In the end it is what it is. They had a love that could never be broken. Why people face these issues is beyond me. My dad was never sick before Alzhheimers. My mom was always sick but she always lived the right way. My only wish is that i could spend more time with them. I did spend a lot of time with them, but it is never enough.

In Reston, my next door neighbor was raising her granddaughter. Automatic Daddy issues. I told the granddaughter to finish high school, get married, then have kids as the path to success.
She did none of that, is now a drug adduct with two kids that she ignores, and sells her body for drugs. So much drama, and the wider family has been devastated. She had mission killed 5 people, with the police calls, rehab, family court. Very sad to see.

do telemarkters still exist? I know there are cheats and liars that constantly spam phone accounts. My guess is no one answers them. The very few messages I get are from liars, and flat losers. They are not telemarketers to be honest. Telemarketers were a legit enterprise. It was a shit job, but mostly it was for real. My guess is you can't be a telemarketer these days because no one answers their pone unless they know who is calling. The irony is today people live on their phones.

I had one male black friend when growing up. We were in sports together and had a good time. He and his sis were the only blacks that lived in our town. He lived in the worst part of town, decrepit house 'down by the river' - which was actually a creek.
The only time I saw anything racist toward him in all the years as friends was one night in a titty bar the dancer came around and stepped over his beer bottle, avoiding him, and asking *me* if I wanted her to dance for me.

I had a nice 12 foot tall evergreen growing along our driveway. I struggled to get outdoor lights on it one year, then said 'fvck it' when spring arrived. I figured as the tree grew the lights would climb with it. I only took them off when my son said it looked low class or something. I never put them back up again. Too much effort and risk.
I never knew how he acquired his snotty attitude, but it stuck with him until it became insufferable. He ended up marrying a leftist with an even worse attitude. Birds of a feather.

I was in charge of writing software for a smallish ( 5,000 ) book school library and in the course of bar coding every book I only came across one book I suggested be tossed - 'Little Black Sambo'.
I never read it, but a quick look at the title and illustrations it seemed perhaps a tad problematic.

Yeah, the tree sat 200 feet back from the street, the bulbs were green or blue ( I forget) but they blended in with the tree nicely. My son was probably an early victim of the 'woke' perpetually offended personality type. Spoiled rotten by his circumstances in life.
