Saturday Afternoon Chess thread 02-27-2021

WIM Anastasia Sorokina BEL 01.jpg
WIM Anastasia Sorokina (BEL)

Blog Note:

425 How come the damn Hints: and Goals: are never filled out on the beginner and intermediate chess challenges. I consider this the equivalent of a hostile work environment.

Posted by: AntiMarxProLennon at February 20, 2021 10:14 PM (o/sjX)

Heh. Right. I forget that we have n00bs that may not know how I do things. To see an actual "Goal" or "Hint", just drag your mouse past the word, as if you're highlighting a line of text. Because that's exactly what you're doing. The text is in an invisible font and highlighting it will cause it to appear. NOTE: Many invisible inks are made visible by holding the paper over a candle flame. Do NOT do this with your computer screen. You will be disappointed in the results.

Moviegique will be along later with the movie thread. As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

OK, so we had a bit of discussion last week about whether one of the Icelandic sweater babes was actually alive and/or a real human being. So I went looking for some better photos and I discovered that traditional Icelandic sweaters are actually a thing. So I'll post some today and some next week.

Beginner Problem - Black To Play

20210227 - Problem 1.jpg
2kr1b1r/pp3ppp/2p5/2n5/P1N1p1b1/2N1PnPP/1P2KP2/R4B1R b - - 0 1

1...Nd4+ 2.Kd2

If 2.Ke1 then immediately Nc2#.

2...Ncb3+
3.Ke1 Nc2#

Intermediate Problem - White To Play

20210227 - Problem 2.jpg
5bk1/5p1p/q2p1P2/3Pr1p1/p7/1p3Q1P/1P4PK/1B3R2 w - - 0 1

White wins by exploiting Black's weakness on the light squares

1.Qh5 Qd3

Or 1...h6 2.Bh7+ Kxh7 3.Qxf7+ Kh8 4.Qxf8+ Kh7 5.Qg7#

2.Bxd3 Rf5
3.Bxf5 h6
4.Bh7+ Kxh7
5.Qxf7+ Kh8
6.Qxf8+ Kh7
7.Qg7#

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20210227 - Problem 3.jpg
8/pp1b2Qp/2pk4/3p1pB1/5p2/3P3P/PPq2PP1/6K1 w - - 0 1

White can pull off a mate in 5 moves. And in some lines, even fewer:

1.Qf8+! Kc7

The other alternatives lose immediately:

1...Ke6 2. Qf6#
1...Ke5 2. Qf6#

2.Bd8+ Kb8

If 2...Kc8 then 3.Bb6+ Be8 4.Qxe8#

3.Be7+ Bc8

or 3...Kc7 4.Qd8#

Another try is 3...Be8 4.Qxe8+ Kc7 5.Qd8#

4.Bd6+ Ka8
5.Qxc8#

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

35 Melania Trump said she felt "great" as she exited the polls Nov. 3rd wearing a pleated, sleeveless Gucci silk-twill dress that featured the Italian brand's signature pattern of equestrian-inspired stirrups. A version of the dress retails for $3,200.

Mrs. Trump paired the Gucci frock with a pair of Celine square sunglasses, tan Christian Louboutin stilettos, and perhaps one of her most luxurious accessories to date, a Kelly Sellier bag with gold in brown leather and a shade of linen by Hermes. The bag can easily retail for $30,000.

51 I think they use a pure patronymic naming system in Iceland, so no "last names" - just your father's last name (talk about patriarchy).

And the ending attached to the father's name is gender-driven (I'm fainting), so siblings can have different "last names".

Johannes Ericksson's sister is Ingrid Erickstochter (something like that).

I'd forgive all that if last week's sweater babes were a possibility in my existence.

52 All those areas on the Viking route have dual coated sheep. Icelandic wool is so incredibly warm. But it's not soft, unless you comb out the undercoat. That style sweater is fairly modern, as is Aran style. For that matter, knitting isn't as old a craft as you might think.

2) Rush is only 21 years old and he sounds exactly the same as when he was 70?

230 Rhomboid, I was stationed at NavComSta Keflavic Iceland for two years 71/72. It was either sunshine out, or night time out. Night time was cold. Daytime was ok. The government was pretty Communist leaning so we had a lot of off base restrictions. To be in a bar after 10 pm, you had to be staying at the hotel the bar was in. Things like that. Local women were beautiful. And some of the were friendly even. They didn't much care for blacks, and had issues with local gals having black babies. A lot of racism there.

All I remember ever really hearing about CPAC here was when Gabe was whining that they weren't letting in the fake conservatives of GOProud in to push their gay agenda. And then when they were let in, for the one year they still existed, that loser said nothing at all about CPAC, proving he was just as agenda driven, and his agenda wasn't conservatism.

272 The running joke at the communication station was that there was a woman behind every tree in Iceland. Problem was, there were only about 50 trees at the bottom of a cliff on the north side of the island. And it was windy. Snow could be an issue when the wind blew. We had hawsers strung between the barracks so that when you went out you wrapped your arm around it so you wouldn't get lost. One guy didn't. We didn't find his body until next spring when the snow melted. Barracks were only about 50 yards apart. They figured he wandered around in a circle between the two barracks until he froze to death.

386 I got lost in Mark Felton vids on YouTube today. One of the good ones was about a Brit invasion of a Japanese held island off Burma. The outnumbered 1000 Japanese decide to join with their main force. Unfortunately, the only way they could do that was to move through a salt water marsh. In addition to various poisonous snakes, spiders, and other indigenous life, there were also a large number of the largest species of salt water crocodiles often growing in excess of 17 feet and 1500 lbs. As the first troops began to expire, the scent of their blood was like ringing a dinner bell. It took them several days to cross the marsh and only about half made it.

The Icelanders are even more stringent than the French are about importing foreign neologisms. Since Icelandic, like all Germanic languages, is agglutinative, they can build native words for new things, rather than import (mostly English) new words.

419 Where do I start...

Melanie was the hotest evar First Lady and because she is an immigrant - exactly the bestest First Lady evar. She was a class act. I so miss her already.

The chess women. I have been watching them for months, more like years now. They scare me. The are all so perfectly feminine and at the same time, because of the game the play, strike me as being utterly ruthless at a white van serial killer level. I don't think I can trust anyone anymore

Posted by: AntiMarxProLennon at February 27, 2021 08:47 PM (47BbQ)

420 Yeah, I botched the Iceland things, we replaced the Brits as occupiers, and it's -totter (or -dottir?) for the feminine suffix on the patronymic.

Missed the cab discussion, but for winos still reading, one fine (it wasn't mine, it was a kind of BIL, his find - husband of a sister of my brother's wife).

Vons/Safeway. St Francis cabernet sauvignon. Price varies over time, but still goes as low as $16/bottle, when you buy a six-pack.

Drinks like $25-30 cab, to me (and all I know who've had it). Really one of the odd and enduring deals at a regular store.
