South Dakota AG Accused of Lying About Fatal Car Accident Last Year
Last September, South Dakota's Attorney General hit and run a man, killing him.
Or, rather: He claims it wasn't a hit and run because he didn't know the thing he hit was a human. He says he didn't know it was a man until he revisited the collision scene the next day. Problem: Prosecutors say the dead man's eyeglasses were found in his car. Pretty sure deer don't wear eyeglasses. From the Washington Post:

@govkristinoem Now that the investigation has closed and charges have been filed, I believe the Attorney General should resign. I have reviewed the material we are releasing, starting today, and I encourage others to review it as well.

My aunt hit a drunk walking down the middle of the highway at night. Nothing she could do about it. She could not have avoided him. It was very difficult for her to start driving at night again, but she eventually did.

I think of her every time I drive around my AO because there are many children and they don't exercise self preservation so well.

A good friend of mine hit someone with his truck a couple of decades ago. It was not his fault; the pedestrian was drunk, wearing dark clothes, walking with traffic on a narrow road late at night. The police told him that it was entirely the pedestrian's fault, but it still bothered him for years.

The poor thing, it just ran out into the road in front of her, there was literally nothing she could do. Thankfully the owners were out and saw it all, mom stopped and talked to them and they were decent about it.
Still horrifying for her and it took a long time for her to get over it.

Yep, about a decade ago somebody hit a man and the man got stuck in the car's windshield. Driver drove home, parked the car in the garage, and let the victim die there. Never tried to get the victim any help, even though the victim was still alive after he was struck.

Windshield glass has elastic qualities. It does not shatter like the glass in your windows, but stars out, then snaps back into shape.
If a head went through the windshield glass, the glass would snap back and either cut said head off, or hold the body in place at the neck... but no way do you get the glasses into the passenger compartment WITHOUT a whole lot of blood evidence as well.
Whole thing sounds very fishy. Is the cops name Comey?

Yeah, this heads into "the coverup is worse than the crime" territory. Okay, sure, if you think you can get away scot free, I see that. But there's all kinds of evidence on the ground, on the car, it becomes a news story, and you'll always wonder if this is the day you'll be found out.
Unless you're, I don't know, trafficking illegal narcotics or have another dead body in the truck or something. Something worse you don't want to get out.

I don't know how the law is elsewhere, but in Texas if you do that sober as a church mouse but you are on your cell phone at the time, you'll likely be charged and convicted. I think cops are given some leeway based on behavior and driving. Like: if you're acting heavily intoxicated and driving like a loon, they can still bust you even if you don't test drunk. Maybe you're on something else they cannot test (one of the main objections cops had to legalizing every drug in existence in Oregon).

The only thing I can think of is if the guy was blackout drunk (we call it Thursday), hit the guy, got out, for some bizarre reason known only to God picked up the guy's glasses, threw them into the car, and promptly forgot everything.

He was almost definitely drunk. It's preferable to get a 'leaving the scene' type charge coupled with a 'vehicular manslaughter' (worst case scenario) then to get an aggravated DUI resulting in death in every state I know of.
So, you know, every incentive is for you to flee the scene, let the guy bleed out, go home, drink a few beers, and wait for the cops to show up ("I hit my head and had to have a few beers to take the edge off after I got home. I thought I hit a deer!"). Thanks MADD!

I hit a deer one night - well, actually, he hit me. He was apparently at the side of the road, in some trees, when he decided to jump into the road. He hit the passenger door on my car, and his head swung around onto the windshield, a few feet from me, startling the shit out of me. Stunned, I stopped, got out and looked, thinking maybe I'd hit a dog (big dog lover here, and I wasn't thinking clearly). The guy behind me also stopped, and told me what had happened.

I agree- if I found the deceased glasses in the car my first thought would not be his head went through he window and his glasses somehow stayed on during that, but then came off later. Im not sure how its possible.

In any case: in a simpler era Fry's was the shit. Pocket protector heaven. Spent many, many hours there.
But later they kinda lost their way. Less hardcore tech, more Best Buy appliances and other crap. They never really found their footing in that model.
And with even Mouser and McMaster-Carr doing next-day shipping as a default there's really no room for a retail space given the breadth of the products they'd have to cover.
RIP Fry's, they had their time in the sun but it's gone.

Actually he was already pretty Hoganesque with the injuries he had before this, in part because he torqued his frame so badly early on with or without PEDs. Ben's wreck was much worse, of course, and sports medicine wasn't even a thing back them; plus he never regained full sight in one eye.
Tiger's Masters win two years ago was his last hurrah. Augusta is a course very suited to his game and he knew it like the back of his hand.

My office for years was on Park Blvd in Palo Alto, so the El Camino Fry's was literally 2/10 mile away. Back then Amazon hadn't even started selling books, and with all the animation cameras, film processor, PC's etc. we had, I was always in there for something.
But yeah, it started turning into an "emergency only" place for me anyway. Usually for some sort of cable or similar. Probably 10 years easy since I set foot in one of their stores, but I know a lot of people that still did.
Forgot to mention, Fry's themed their stores as well, one in Santa Clara was all an Egyptian theme. The place had like 30 registers. I think they've probably been on the edge of solvency for a while now. Still, a shame. Wonder what they're going to do with all those giant stores? Each one sits on prime real estate, that's for sure.

I'd guess there'll be an auction on that stuff. The one by my office was Western themed, so it was pretty dull. But a few of them had some pretty cool stuff. Worth keeping an eye peeled, but I'd guess most of it will be in giant lots.

The one here in San Marcos had an enormous (literally probably 20' across) aquarium in the entranceway, and another one in the lunch area. It was very cool.

I've been using newegg for components for well over a decade. I have nothing but great things to say about them. Their customer service is amazing. Or at least was, the last time i had an issue, which was like 10 years ago when a motherboard arrived DOA.

The thing about Fry's - at least the one near me - is that it was entertainment as well as shopping. It was fun just to visit. And the chances you couldn't find what you were looking for there were nil. They had everything, including things you'd never even heard of or seen.
My guess: carrying all that inventory ate up cash, and precipitated their closing.

I remember when they built the one in Phoenix back in like 1994, I was in college and they wouldn't hire me. I took that psychological profile test as part of the application process and apparently failed it.

They suck for tech stuff. Mouser, Digikey, a few others, when you're into mechanical stuff it's McMaster-Carr FTW and no one else even comes close. Okay, there's Fastenal etc. but mcmaster.com still owns.
Amazon's tried to get into the industrial side but they're really horrible. And I try not to buy TOO much from Amazon...

Agree on that. Didn't used to be that way, but as also mentioned - they screwed the pooch when they started competing with Best Buy. I didn't go to Fry's for an appliance. The salespeople used to be really knowledgeable, spoke English and everything. Returns were always a living hell.

I once ran over something in the dead of night on the highway in rural Nevada, bursting not one, but TWO tires.
Turned out that a winch used to cinch down a load had fallen off of a flatbed truck. The winch was about six inches in diameter and black, so on a black unlit road in the dead of night, it was impossible to see. Two tires later, the next morning, I was back on the road.

I hit a yeti once with a snowcat. Chunks of fur and flesh froze solid all over the front of that thing. Had to come down several thousand feet and wait for spring to get it cleaned off. The fangs made a nice necklace though.

My uncle was killed while jogging many years ago, by a woman who turned around to speak to/yell at her kids in the back seat of the station wagon. Her car actually chased him down into the ditch he jumped into. She shattered her windshield.
THEN she drove all the way home and parked the car in the garage. She took the kids out of the car and went inside. I think it was one of the kids that called the police.
My uncle didn't have a chance. But something snapped in the woman's mind and she just went straight into denial. She confessed when the police confronted her with the broken windshield and the blood all over the hood and bumper. I think she got a hit and run but not the negligent manslaughter she should have.
It happens. Sure as shootin' shouldn't make any difference in consequences, though.
