Michael Anton: Why Do Those Who Claim The Election Wasn't Rigged Require Us to Confirm That Claim For Them?

Why, if this is so obviously a "fact," are some people so insecure about it?

Why Do the Election’s Defenders Require My Agreement?

The purpose of voting today is to give a democratic veneer to an undemocratic regime--not to give the people a say in the direction of their government.

By Michael Anton

February 23, 2021

Recently, I appeared as a guest on Andrew Sullivan's podcast. Sullivan is vociferously anti-Trump, so I expected us to disagree--which, naturally, we did. But I was surprised by the extent to which he insisted I assent to his assertion that the 2020 election was totally on the level. That is to say, I wasn't surprised that Sullivan thinks it was; I was surprised by his evident yearning to hear me say so, too.

Which I could not do.

Sullivan badgered me on this at length before finally accusing me of being fixated on the topic, to which I responded, truthfully, that I was only talking about it because he asked. As far as I’m concerned, the 2020 election is well and truly over. I have, I said, "moved on."

So I thought. Then I received two emails from a friendly acquaintance who is a recognized Republican expert on elections that suggested he, too, is troubled by my lack of belief. Then came two other data points, which I noticed only after the first draft this essay had been completed. Ramesh Ponnuru snarked (snark seems to be the go-to, indeed the only, device his in literary quiver) that one of the anomalies I cited in my most recent article in the Claremont Review of Books had been "debunked" by the partisan left-wing FactCheck.org. While I appreciate the insight into the sources from which National Review editors get their "facts" these days, the quote provided admits that the statistic I cited is, well, accurate. Ponurru naturally ignores all of the other points raised in my earlier article.

Jonathan Chait wrote yet another (his 12th?) article denouncing me, for this same sin of disbelief. Why did he bother? Is there even a remote chance that a single one of his New York magazine readers either read my article or encountered its argument? Or is he worried that the "narrative" of the election is so fragile that it needs to be shored up?

I wanted to move on, I really did. But when Left (Chait), center (Sullivan), faux-right anti-conservative ankle-biter (Ponnuru), and genuine, if establishment, Right (my correspondent) all agree that my lack of belief is a problem, I wondered why this should be so, and the following observations came to mind.

This gets at it:

Or is he worried that the "narrative" of the election is so fragile that it needs to be shored up?

A correspondent who listened to the Andrew Sullivan podcast tells me that Sullivan is so frothingly committed to his fantasies that he sounds legitimately mentally ill.

Andrew Sullivan Freakout Advisory level: Elevated

Remember, this is the same guy that claimed that Sarah Palin was wearing a fake pregnancy suit to cover up the real pregnancy in the family.

But now he's very, very worried about Conspiracy Theories taking root!

9 They need people to believe that the election was on the level so that they can push the narrative that Trump was somehow so awful that he drove away critical voting blocs. The GOPe wants to get rid of populism and Trumpism and go back to the good old days of pre-2016, and the left wants to keep the state level GOP from getting any funny ideas about cracking down on mail-in voting or other tricks used by the left.

29 " They need people to believe that the election was on the level so that they can push the narrative that Trump was somehow so awful that he drove away critical voting blocs. "

That, and they--like the Soviet Union did--need you to say out loud it was legit, even when you know it wasn't, to make you complicit. There's that great Theodore Dalrymple quote that's relevant: "I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control."

30 Also, the modern political class is largely a cargo cult who only know how to game the system to get their jobs, either political hires or elected, but not how to deal with new or unique problems. For the left every ME dust up can only be solved by a two-state solution, and every economic problem requires raising the minimum wage. For the right every foreign policy is based around free trade with dictatorships and continual US deployments to keep the current status quo from collapsing.

49 What makes me most sick is all Republicans like McConnell had to do was give a little lip service to fraud they've been talking about since Tammany Hall, but that's how much they hated Trump to where they now pretend it's like a Roswell theory or something. Like it has no place to even discuss and it has never been a concern of theirs.

At least Dems went along with Russia to help Hillary save face, and that really was batshit crazy. Voter fraud is a proven fact.

If the evidence was such BS they should welcome it so they can disprove it as lies, but when they do thier best to hide that information, that's all the proof that's needed to sow that it's correct.

We see that shut finally happening with HCQ now, they banned the information because the evidence proved it was very good at helping Covid patients, but they banned any mention of it so that they can inflate the body count, now suddenly it's been flipped and proven to work more effectively than anything else, so that they can claim Biden cured the world.

70 All the lying wears people down. I KNOW the election was stolen... I've read the articles and looked at the statistics and read the Texas lawsuit. So I'm aware of a lot of the facts; but I KNOW because my gut tells me. And it tells me so because of how the so-called "winners" have been acting. Where, for example, are all the usual post-election analyses of voting demographics and patterns?? It's not there... no one wants to analyze the data because it flies in the face of their "perfect election" gaslighting. If they true and fairly won, they would delight in rubbing the proof in our face. Instead: Just push the narrative and insist you believe. It's like a religion...

117 I think Anton hits part of it - but not all of it. Yes - he's right - for some, this outrage is a tactical move, designed to end the discussion and move on, because they see no advantage from any honest examination of just how shady the 2020 Election counts went down.
For others, I think it's more complicated. The shrillness of their reactions contain quite a bit of desperation. It's the same kind of response that some put off here whenever secession is discussed - and I think the two groups share something in common. A true, gut wrenching fear of the unknown. Both cohorts desire to maintain the status quo - no matter how illegitimate it's proven to be - rather than risk the resulting outcome being worse.
Said simpler - as long as there's still some items on the store shelves that they can trade currency for - neither group wants to hear any talk about stolen elections or dissolving governments. They just want to trade their cash for bread. And they'd really prefer it if we kept any comments about the Weimar Republic, Banana Republics, or failing Republics to ourselves.

Biden was not lawfully elected and was installed only as a result of fraud.

Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Logan Tiberius Edwards (2012-2021)

Milky Loads Andy is correct in asserting that the election was "lawful," but that is a far cry from legitimate or honest.

The ballots for Biden surreptitiously received and counted in the dark were real, official, and legitimate ballots when they were mailed out. The processes used to accept the ballots did not include signature verification, and those envelopes were destroyed, making any checking impossible. This was also "lawful" under the system in place.

Anton is correct in viewing the inauguration as legal and properly conducted according to the system in place, while at the same time being wholly founded on a fraud, but a legal, verified and proper type of fraud.

These are really two people talking past one another.

161 The other thing that's infuriating about the GOPe Ostrich in the sand stance on election fraud, is that DeSantis*, Scott and Kemp had to beat back efforts to steal their elections.

Also the Donks "vote harvested" every GOP rep in Orange County out of their seats.

Bottom line, the GOP is an illegitimate political party, they don't even care about maintaining power in even a relative manner.

* Not saying Kemp is GOPe just that they tried to steal his election.

For the left every ME dust up can only be solved by a two-state solution, and every economic problem requires raising the minimum wage. For the right every foreign policy is based around free trade with dictatorships and continual US deployments to keep the current status quo from collapsing.

------

My read?

For the Left, every policy is a reflection of their reflexive hatred of this country, and no matter what, they pick whatever will cause the most misery for us.

For the Fake Right (actually center-left), every policy is a reflection of their reflexive greed, and no matter what, the pick whatever will most benefit the donors who keep them shitting in high cotton.

YMMV.

The only real debate among anyone with a light on upstairs, though unspoken, is whether the rigging of the election was a good thing.

And if you believe the rigging of the election was a good thing, you must vehemently argue against it for two reasons: 1) to show you are one of the "good guys" and part of the educated technocracy, and 2) to avoid letting the mask slip in front of the dummies/non-technocrats.

Anyone who truly believes in their heart that this was a well-executed election that Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Minnesota managed fairly and legally is an imbecile. But it is hard to tell that camp apart from the in-their-own-mind-well-intentioned liars.

I'll make a prediction. The dems will win more seats in the senate and will expand their majority in the house. This plan has already been set into motion.

Since the GOP is perfectly happy as a minority party - and their top priority is still to purge any Trumpians from their ranks - I really don't see what would stop the DNC from doing so.

intensely, so I have never sought out the answer from them or the

Not only, that, from what I understand, his numbers were down (as expected) across most of the board. So, not only did those few counties exceed expectations, they did so in such a way that the otherwise low overall numbers still managed to exceeded historical numbers. Everyone was super enthused to vote for Biden! So enthused, in fact, that they apparently all decided to carpool together.

256 It is a very fragile narrative they peddle. That is indeed why they need to badger people into making false assertions. The election was rigged, fraught with fraud and unconstitutional meddling. There is more than enough factual materiality to back up those claims. They just don't want to hear it because they're planning on using it again, in future elections. In addition, Democrats and their defenders keep repeating they have some kind of mandate for the disaster they're undertaking on our country. Nothing could be further from the truth. That's before we get to their January 6th Fiction, which they want to use as an additional device to complete their despotic march against any opposition.

Keep in mind almost none of the fraud or unconstitutional meddling claims have been heard by impartial judges on substance. They've been dismissed on procedural points. That doesn't sound like a secure, tried, reasoned review. It sounds like a parade of political buffoons who are insecure in the fact that once people hear the truth they'll be marched off into exile.

But .... in Dane and Milwaukee and other other county, exceeded her numbers by utterly implausible %s, double digit. Something that doesn't happen in elections, and has never been seen.

Like you and other former near-lifetime Beltway veterans I know, I have further tightened my fake news blackout, so maybe I missed it - but has anyone, anywhere, addressed the bizarre and historically unique thing about 5 key states (and only those) stopping their vote count processes? Ali Alexander did that after the election, specifically when a woman on twitter (Lauren a.k.a."SomebitchIknow") shared that someone had voted on behalf of her mom (since her mom had moved to anaother state and gotten married). Her mom was tipped off by one of the new Zuck-funded orgs texting her on election day asking if she had voted in her old state yet. Ali and Lauren asked people to check old voter registrations if they had moved or recently changed names (married/divorced) and uncovered a lot.

So, there's a will and at least one (likely many) already in place.

Like you and other former near-lifetime Beltway veterans I know, I have further tightened my fake news blackout, so maybe I missed it - but has anyone, anywhere, addressed the bizarre and historically unique thing about 5 key states (and only those) stopping their vote count processes?

-------

That's the thing. There's a shit-ton of evidence of fraud. But I didn't need that. On election night, when the news jerks all announced gleefully that swing states where Trump was ahread had suddenly stopped counting, I knew the fix was in. I just laughed to Lady YD, and shut off the TV.

She's not even political at all, and she just said "Oh, screw this. I'm never voting again, if this is how it's going to be."

Any idiot could see what was happening, and anyone who says they couldn't is a liar, just pulling for their team.

345 Lizzy, Matt Braynard, I think his name is - Voter Integrity Project - quickly assembled a small team and, using only publicly available info (registrations, vote results, change-of-address database - which I think was created precisely for this purpose), examined the ballots in several key states.

He said he's doing a more in-depth version of this right now.

As I recall he found far more illegal votes counted in GA (out of state, dead, and my favorite - under-age!) than the official "margin" between the candidates.

And this was a very quick look. NV, the sleeper here in the sense that the Clark County abuses were truly Zimbabwe-like (switching off signature matching process, kicking out GOP observers), and there as I recall Matt quickly found huge numbers of illegal votes counted.

376 It's the same shit they've been doing for years, for example with Obama's birth certificate, and climate change. There's something really really REALLY fishy about the circumstances of Obama's location of birth. Maybe he is, as his supporters insist, a natural-born U.S. citizen. But I don't remember a presidential candidate in all of American history having such a hard time producing, instantly, an absolutely bulletproof birth certificate. Yet liberals demand that you affirm the legitimacy of Obama's certificate, or else you're branded a "birther." Same with global warming or climate change or whatever bullshit term they're using now: The evidence for AGW is, at best, shaky. Yet if you don't confirm the liberal narrative, you're a "denier." It's just their way of, to use their language, "otherizing" you. If they could, they'd force you to wear a colored arm band. But they can't, so a rhetorical simulacrum will have to do.

379 IIRC, Sullivan was pinched for possession of marijuana while hanging out in Provincetown. While that in itself is no big deal, if you're a green card alien waiting for citizenship, any brush with the law could jeopardize that process. All of those fawning Atlantic articles that he wrote during the Obama years gave him some pull with the immigration authorities, and he got his citizenship.

Andrew Sullivan owes his US citizenship to Obama (and, by extension, Biden). Because of this, he has chosen his side, and no evidence that might shatter that illusion can be countenanced by him.

I'd ditch hypocrisy. Kinda the jaywalking of moral offenses. Something that everyone is so guilty of that it loses any bite. And so in the eye of the beholder that it seems to only be a failing in one's opponents.

I'd replace it with either:

a. Communism. As Paul reputedly said in his lost epistle to the Laodiceans, "Kill a commie for Christ."

b. Failing to return shopping carts to the cart bin. We can't have civilization if you are just going to leave these lying around the parking lot.

So, ya gotta get on down the road to the next thing. The old ways are no longer operative, and it's time to consider the alternatives instead of dwelling in the past.

I disagree. We have two choices. We either accept that the election is over (legit or not) or we don't. "Don't" doesn't mean bitching about it on the internet or in interviews. It means something far, far more serious and far more significant to one's life, fortune and sacred honor.

I have personally decided that it is not yet time to "not accept" this temporary travesty, and your mileage may vary. But "not moving on" entails far more than vain and empty verbal posturing. I do not believe, strategically or otherwise, that we are in a general position to "not accept" the results of what happened in November. Again, YMMV

425 In 2020 the dems, deep state, media, and big tech pulled out all of the stops to make sure Trump was not re-elected. Massive mail-in ballot dispersals hav long been a goal of democrats, and Covid provided the excuse to push it through. Why would they push so hard for laws reducing verification of mail-in ballots except to make cheating easier?

Sequestering of Biden and all negatives stories about Hunter were essential so people would not see how demented and corrupt was their candidate. Yet, still, they needed the chicanery of five corrupt democrat cities to pull off the win.

Any neutral observer would have tons of questions about this election including, wow, we've never had so many mail-in ballots; how did that go? Why were so many Republican poll watchers kicked out of voting centers? What explains the pause in 5 cities, followed by massive spikes in votes for Biden? Instead, the media every talking head rushed to state unequivocally that everything was kosher. Back to observation one: they pulled out all stops because the left, and all who profit off of China, were threatened by Trump. They are adamant because they or their bosses are being paid to be so.

438 YD, different point, really.

Anton is bringing up the fact that these dimwit authoritarians like Sullivan are obsessed with getting their Vyshinskiy confessions about the election's integrity. He himself recognizes the many many anomalies, which is merely a careful way to point to the many gross irregularities of process that cannot be denied.

But he's "moving on" with respect to the most basic function of a representative republic? If a presidential election can be stolen - and crudely, in plain sight, and involving a complete detonation of the constitution WRT process (thanks, SCOTUS!!! for essentially endorsing this de facto revision of the constitution) - then what's the stuff he's going to "move on" *to*?

Obviously there's no republic and no political process at all if elections are rigged. Whatever things he thinks about any other topics are moot and quaint, if there is no actual representative government.

I'll amend my snark. Lazy, shallow, styling and social positioning.

I agree YD. We have to step away from our hopelessly corrupt federal govt. And yet remain steadfast, remembering the promise of our Founding, and try to make a difference locally.

The US Federal Government WILL collapse. It is possible - a slim hope - that it can do so without destroying the country. The way forward to is to work OUTSIDE of the diseased part, isolate it as much as possible. It's thrashing around right now, basically death throes. Just stay out of range and hang on tight.

the reason this is "global" is because the massive generation called baby boomers was a global postwar phenomenon (except in Eastern Europe, which is NOT in the same mess as the West, interestingly).

We are going through utterly inevitable upheaval as the Earth reclaims a generation who honestly did "create reality" ...via sheer numbers.

There's a big difference between accepting the current state of affairs and being content with it. Are the defenders inside a besieged castle "content" with it? No, and they will act when they can. But sallying forth to get mown down by the enemy is not a tactically sound course of action. I do believe most people are in the "besieged" mindset.

Let's look at gays. It started with tolerance. Ok, not a problem. But then you have to not only tolerate it, but espouse it. Embrace it. And if you don't, well, they have the courts make you do so. Gay marriage will be the law of the land per judges who are not elected. Because, if it were up to the states, gay marriage would never have happened.

This has been happening for at least 3 decades. So, it should not be surprising that they insist that we bend and embrace an election that was CLEARLY stolen. Not enough to tolerate it. You will be made to embrace and espouse it.

I'm not sure there were safeguards so much as we thought there was. Even so, IMO the safeguards, such that they were obviously had been established to be weak links and easily worked around by some pretty obvious fraud.

It's really hard to objectively look at the election data and NOT come to the conclusion it was rigged.

493 Governor Andrew Cuomo has created a culture within his administration where sexual harassment and bullying is so pervasive that it is not only condoned but expected. His inappropriate behavior toward women was an affirmation that he liked you, that you must be doing something right. He used intimidation to silence his critics. And if you dared to speak up, you would face consequences.

That's why I panicked on the morning of December 13.

While enjoying a weekend with my husband and six-year-old daughter, I spontaneously decided to share a small part of the truth I had hidden for so long in shame and never planned to disclose. 510 There is no excuse for SCOTUS not doing its job. Its actual, legitimate job (which is about 1/10 of what it does). They either apply and defend the constitution and the law, or (as in this case) they actively abet their complete destruction (no hyperbole).

If you accept the cowardice, or stupidity, of a court or justice who is afraid of ruling on clear facts and the constitution, on the central process of our system, then you're not serious about any of it.

The tiny, tiny, invisibly small character of most in the Beltway and in the political class cannot be excused. Their proper action wouldn't in itself "overturn the election", but they should be prepared to overturn elections 8 times a day if warranted - if they aren't, they have no business being on any court or in any serious job.
