Trump For Congress? Um...Cute, But Dumb.

It's an appealing idea; one that combines a thumb in the eye of the Democrat machine that is desperate to deplatform (and probably imprison) President Trump with a ready-made bully pulpit for a man who is a master at using one.

Trump for Congress, 2022

Trump for Congress 2022! Donald Trump declares his candidacy, asks voters across the country to turn out and elect him a Republican majority in the House, and launches a simultaneous campaign to become Speaker of the House once elected. Imagine, Donald Trump second in line to the Presidency and forcing President Biden-Harris-Biden to negotiate with him in order to pass legislation. The “Art of the Deal” evolves into the political “Art of War.”
Except....The position of Speaker of The House requires knowledge of the intricacies of the rules of the House, and the ability to manipulate those rules. One of President Trump's weaknesses was his inability to navigate the labyrinth of government, preferring to use his own management style that worked well for him in the past, coupled with his excellent and energizing speaking skills.

But that management style won't work in the House, because the 218+ representatives each have their own agendas and the Republican Party has been remiss for a very long time in cracking the whip and forcing a unified voice. And the bully pulpit of the speaker is an order of magnitude smaller than the president's.

All of this assumes that President Trump would be elected speaker, something that may seem a foregone conclusion, but which might not be realistic. I simply cannot imagine President Trump accepting an inferior position within the house hierarchy, so it would be "Speaker or bust!"

A more realistic position for President Trump is as the leader of the New PartyTM, whatever that may be. Could it be a reconstituted Republican Party after a violent purge of the NeverTrumpers and the "go along to get along" squishes who have done real damage to the party and to the country? Sure. Maybe. Or will it be an entirely new party, built from the ashes of the Republican party's self-immolation? That sounds even better, and I know full well that may mean a generation out of power.

Either way. President Trump belongs at the head of a movement, in full view of all of America, not buried in the Capitol trying to wend his way through the Deep State's obstacles.

27 I don't doubt that Nanzi Pelosi, and House Speakers before her, did a lot of hard work to claw to the top of that particular pig trough, but I don't for a minute think that person, whoever it is, does a lot of heavy lifting.

They have a shedload of underlings who do the grunt work.

So in that sense, Trump could do the job. He'd just need people around him to help him stay on track, and as was the case when he was in the White House, he would likely find himself surrounded by a nest of vipers, many of whom were intent on undermining him every step of the way.

89 CPAC. We've all mentioned how Trump doesn't surround himself with the best people at times and I think his relationship with Matt and Mercedes Schlapp show that. I hope this is just repaying them for their past loyalty because I have no faith in that textbook example of a beltway power couple at all. I always thought Mercedes was half of the leaks coming out of his administration.

98 McConnell only pushed through those judges because Trump kept hounding him, not out of the goodness of his heart.

Judges were picked by GOPe think tanks, and were just about the only GOPe feature of Trump's presidency. That's why McConnell liked them. Its one of the few places I happen to think the GOPe gets right, as well - they do recognize judges are incredibly important.

The problem is, these guys were all country club insiders, guys who were reliably part of the gang, so when the rubber hit the road over voter fraud they all went with the party line of "whatever it takes to get rid of the uncouth outsider"

This isn't Caddyshack where the rowdy poors win, led by a bombastic and hilarious iconoclast. Its the real world where the iconoclast is destroyed for daring to question his Betters.

131 President Trump belongs at the head of a movement, in full view of all of America, not buried in the Capitol trying to wend his way through the Deep State's obstacles.

Oh yeah. Some wag mentioned that Trump may be more powerful out of office than in, and I think that is true politically. It may even be true in foreign affairs, as his policies were never fully implemented b/c the Deep State blocked him at every turn.

Trump saved a lot of seats in Congress, and got stabbed quite a few times by ungrateful wretches. McConnell being the top of that food chain.

At 75+ million strong, we may not be able to win every election, but we can damn sure keep any 'conservative' out that Trump refuses to endorse.

132 Again, being realistic, and not just venting, my assumption is the Republican Party is looking at what worked in 2020, and what didn't... and a LOT of things worked for them.

They're going to try to replicate what did work, and that's going to include things like getting behind whoever Wyoming primaries Dizzy Liz with.

They look at the Georgia runoffs, and have to conclude one of two things: It was rigged, or a lot of their voters stayed home. Or both.

Now, there ARE rumblings that Mitch had his own cheat operation at work in Kentucky, and is only where he is because of his deals with the devil. So I guess they can try to do that... where they have the mechanisms in place to do so, but everyone knows they're in general, significantly worse at this than the Democrats are.

149 Well covered by everyone already, but no, though a good discussion to start, CBD. I have noted recently that Trump, in his scathing statement on Mitch, had something I found very disappointing.

He said he would selectively support rivals, presumably challengers to GOP incumbents.

Obviously I like this, but I find it very unlikely to move the ball effectively. This stems from my very bleak assessment of the situation, in terms of inertia. As the absurd "insurrection" and second shampeacment spectacle illustrated - as much or more than any of the jaw-dropping spectacles inflicted on the country and Trump since 2017 - the GOP is beyond fixing. The GOP, to generalize a bit, was as hostile and self-destructively rabid in their opposition to Trump and their obsession with purging him from public life in 2021, as they were in 2016.

The election certification process, at state and federal level, showed the same.

High-risk, yes; unlikely to yield instant happiness, yes; but replacing the GOP probably is the only way to make more than a marginal difference in anything, at this point.

Yeah, I don't think some folks here pay attention to that. The House elections were a disaster for Democrats. There were no gains (that I know of?) in state legislatures and governor mansions for the Democrats, and even in states like Californica, the hold they have is crumbling. 165 What happened during the Obama years where he absolutely destroyed the Democrat party down ballot, Trump has done the exact opposite. He gained seats in the house. He produced more red counties in this past election than in the previous one. He has moved minority voters out of the plantation. Instead of worrying about the Presidency, we should be using the strength of the movement to take over congress. That is the only way to get things done.

"When government fears the people, there is liberty..." etc. That is what really keeps barbwire around the capital and troops on alert. Their own sense of vulnerability and shock at how by removing Trump, they achieved little to nothing. Before Trump was a lighting rod, now...good luck stumping out the internets. 185 If a minor speed-bump to decline is your maximum goal (and it's not unreasonable, based on the fundamentals), then "changing the GOP" is the proper path. Itself a path not very likely to succeed in a timely manner, but rational.

But that's the most you would achieve.

Tom Cotton is an excellent illustration. From the RAISE Act (a proposed law incorporating most of the changes obviously needed - and supported by a large majority of Americans, when seriously surveyed), back when Trump first rode an intelligent immigration approach to the White House, to ..... today, when Cotton has paired with *Romney* to offer a ridiculous and pathetic proposal to *increase the minimum wage*, linked to the head-shaking "sweetener" of making hiring illegals quadruple super-super-seriously illegal, more illegal than it already is for many reasons.

And during the certification debacle, his excuse for rubber stamping the obviously dubious election "results": a laughable "constitutional" dodge, with a hilarious kicker. If the GOP exercised Congress' proper role in the process, WHO KNOWS WHAT THE DEMS MIGHT DO IN RETALIATION.

This - from one of the handful of decent Beltway GOP.

Not a swipe at CBD or anyone else, just an observation, but I don't think it has dawned on everyone or sunk in that the left is going to continue to secure their power by any means necessary.

2010 was the 2nd largest political earthquake in American history, in terms of partisan change in office-holders.

Changed little. The current GOP is barely an opposition, in the minority, and absolutely not the instrument of its voters or the engine of truly popular change, in the majority. "We" and "our team" reflects an unserious approach by a voter, not an interest in political matters.

you are right. We were sold a bill of goods. What worked for Reagan simply does not work today. It is a different country and we face different threats. Some of the stuff Trump said early on bothered me a bit. But he was right on almost all of it. He was right about free trade, tariffs, the media, big business, all of it. In fact, the things I most did not like at first were the things he was the most right about.

*shrug* I think for some people, its too hard to accept that we're past that point now. They have to cling to the dream. By 2022, most of the people here will be rah-rahing and talking about donations again as if the election is not a show.

Maybe they'll learn by next November.

227 There won't be a successful third party, not in the next two years, or four. This is not a parliamentary system, there is no chance to form a coalition a split will weaken the right. 241 We can't fight or Civil War our way into a better people. We aren't going to fix the culture that made this nation into what it is now with bullets. The Revolutionary War happened because the people in the USA were of a certain cultural sort who valued freedom and came here to find a new life away from the tyranny and abuse of their home countries.

We're so steeped in post modern humanism and relativism now as a people that's what we want as a culture, no matter that there are exceptions in places like this. We number in the thousands. They number in the tens of millions.

That changes one at a time in hearts and souls, not top-down by force. And it takes time.

242 Good grief, it's not about a third Party, it's about getting one Party that represents and acts on the wishes of it's voters. That's never going to be the GOP. They just had the strongest and toughest leader in a century that tried to get them to do just that and they wouldn't. They actively work against us, so quit supporting them across the board. That means no voting for the GOP period.

Posted by: lowandslow at February 21, 2021 01:25 PM (qH6FZ)

243 How did the GOP start?

Right. By destroying one of the dominant parties.

Different world now, very much ossified, institutionally and in the electorate's mindset, into a "2 party system". But it's a de facto situation, not a "system".

In any case, it's all a question of whether marginal incremental change of the GOP is a better bet than quick split and replacement of the GOP. There is zero evidence that the former approach has any chance of success (in a timely manner), and the latter of course is a leap in the dark. But it's silly to pretend that the marginal approach has high chance of success, based on recent history, so the risk is not all in the second approach.

276 Ironic that throughout history, Democrats (Robesp, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pot, etc.) have never had any trouble purging their party of recalcitrant losers but the supposed adult party (the Republicants) can't. Identify all the Republi-cans, identify all the Republi-cants, and then just literally throw the Republi-cants out of the party. It's elementary (as in elementary school level), so why complicate it? 304 Trump now becomes the political assassin. He targets elected officials that need removal in 2022 and campaigns actively against them. He runs in 2024, wins, and then calls a constitutional convention for repeal of the amendment limiting the number of terms a president can serve. At his age he can easily serve 3 more terms.

305 A key reality is control of the Senate majority, and that takes wins in two elections for a start up New Party.

To be effective in 2022, you need an alliance with those senators who are not up for election in 2022.

Yes. I have had good results in browning first and then bluing with a variety of cold blues. The plum or browning is done with the metal heated just short of boiling water and seems to provide a durable basecoat and even that accepts the weaker cold blue making it more durable that just blue. I have 5 different commercial blues that I have to try. Each alloy of steel seems to react better to one than the others so you have to experiment a bit.

So far, we've allowed ourselves to be masked-up and shut-up, allowed ourselves to keep six feet apart from one another for no scientific reason other than it sounds about right. 346 Y'know, Trump does NOT need to be an elected Member of Congress to win election from the House as their Speaker.

And he could lean heavily on a knowledgeable and experienced Parliamentarian as to the intricates of moving and/or blocking bills, motions and other tricks of the trade. Someone as sharp as Cruz (but not Cruz), right at his elbow, whenever needed. And then run rampant through the Democrat agenda, killing off every bad idea they proffer, and forcing the (R) side to push through ONLY what's good, Constitutional and RIGHT. A good run of this would see another (R) wave in the mid-terms, and tee-up 2024 to perhaps, even overcome the Margin of Dominion. How? No Federal Election Funds to any State still using the accursed machines. Spending Bills must originate in the House. This one would be a fine start.

This is why we must break the GOPe, even if this means a Dem supermajority in 2022. The best chance the country has is if we put enough 'moderate' Dems in to revive the Blue Dogs. They have the best shot to moderate the Senate, because we know the Rs can't and won't do it. Best case, Sienna and Manchin have a bloc behind them. Worst case, they put in a bunch of Doug Joneses that are out next cycle. Either way, we get The Turtle out of leadership.

358 You may not realize it, but there are plenty of Democrat voters who would vote for a new party as long as it jettisoned the Romney, McConnell, Toomey, Paul Ryan nonsense of austerity for Americans, generosity for the world. Most people do not like holier than thou hectoring, whether it is coming from crazy SJW lefties or Rick Santorum. A new party that allowed people to oppose taxpayer funding of abortions and transgender mutilation, while declaring that they do not want to increase government power enough to ban them would have a chance to attract a broad swathe of common sense people. I simply do not think a majority of citizen voters like paying for free everything for illegals who then work for substandard cash wages. I do not think many love endless foreign wars.

If we had never wasted our time voting for Republicans who promised to stand between us and total domination, I would consider your criticism to be valid. Unfortunately, we voted for Rs that promised to end O-care and did not, we voted for Rs that promised to balance our budget and did not, we voted for Rs that promised to drain the swamp and did not, etc. etc. etc. etc.

Every time election time came they said to vote for them, and they would finally fix things. First they needed a majority House, then a majority Senate, then the Presidency. We gave them all those things, culminating in Trump, and they proceeded to slow-walk and screw up and assist the other side at every opportunity. No thank you, I'm done with that. If they make the call again in 2022, and we stupidly answer it to give these people more power, they will know that they own us. They need to be afraid of us.
