The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

Here is what I think is the dumbest of the dumb takes on Limbaugh's passing:

rant 20210221 01.jpg

First, a bit of context here: In addition to being an absolute dumbsh1t, Joe Lockhart is a stooge. He was a stooge for Bill Clinton back in the day, and now he's a stooge for CNN. Same thing really, there's just a differnet person signing his paychecks.

But for sheer, concentrated, weapons-grade dumbness, this tweet is hard to beat. Lockhart is giving Sally Kohn a run for her money.

So let's take it a little bit at a time:

"The thing about Rush Limbaugh is he wasn't the zealot that he came across as."

In other words, Rush wasn't the bitter, angry, unhinged lunatic that Lockhart thinks all conservatives must be like. Therefore, he wasn't a conservative. That's Joe's argument. He probably met Limbaugh at some time, or, more likely, he knew people who had, and it turns out that Rush is actually a nice guy. None of his previous (4? 5? I've lost count) wives will say a bad word about him, despite the efforts to get them to. But rather than admit that the image of conservatives he holds in his mind is wrong and will need to be revised, he would much rather believe that Rush simply isn't one. But, if he isn't one, then what is the explanation for his career? There can be only one answer:

"Rush did it for the money. Lots of it."

Yes, that's right. Rush is cynically manipulating the flyover rubes for a big paycheck. I've actually heard this before. Behind this view is the assumption that no thinking person, no rational person can possibly believe any of the conservative ideas Rush talks about on his show. It's just not possible. So there has got to be another reason for it.

"Just like Hannity and company, his background wasn't in politics or a political movement. It was making money."

The absolute dumbness of this statement is breathtaking. Rush's background was "making money"? Really? Does he know *anything* about Rush's earlier life at all? Rush started out completely unacquainted with what Joe Lockhart would think of as "money." His first "real" job was a low-level sales job with the Kansas City Royals. That wasn't a high pay position. And then his first talk show was in Sacramento, California, which is not a big radio market. Nobody gets rich being on the radio in Sacramento. Rush wasn't raking in the bucks. "Rush's background was making money" should be revised to "Rush's background was trying to earn a living as best as he could" for accuracy.

And Rush's national radio career wasn't a sure thing. I remember one time Rush related the story of meeting with his investors who were going to help him set up what would become the EIB network and they asked him how much money he had in the bank. It was some pitifully small amount, but they told Rush they wanted it all. That is, they wanted him to have an actual stake in his new talk show as an incentive to work hard and not screw around. If he goofed off, he wouldn't be goofing off with someone else's money, because if he did, he'd be goofing off with his own as well.

In other words, they wanted him to work the high wire without a net. And he did.

And I hope all you morons caught the stench of Lockhart's "how dare he?" elitism in his complaint about Rush not having the proper "background in politics" or "a political movement" (meaning, liberal political movement) in order to be a political commentator. No, Rush did not have the proper background. Rush didn't go to the proper schools. Rush didn't hang out with the proper people. Rush didn't make the proper connections. Rush doesn't have the right opinions.

And what's so valuable about being in politics? Sniffy Joe and Bernie the commie have never been outside of politics their entire adult lives, and they haven't done diddly squat.

But it's true, Rush wasn't part of any political movement. He pretty much created his own political movement. It consists of ordinary, working Americans who are tired of being looked down upon, sneered at, marginalized, and lied to by people like Joe Lockhart, all the while telling us that we're the problem. What Rush did was create a vast army of deplorables and taught them how to raise their middle fingers to the Joe Lockharts of this world. That the only thing they deserve is to get laughed at and made fun of, and not take them seriously.

And his continuously derisive laughter and ridicule aimed at these self-styled elites is why they hate Rush so much.

But the actress, whose other passion was flying (she was a licensd pilot) did a number of movies, including the 1964 Hank Williams biopic Your Cheatin' Heart with George Hamilton, the original Orange Man. There was a reason why all but one the pics of him I used were B&W photos. The color of his skin looks like something that is not found in nature.

18 Carroll Baker was what some have called the "thinking man's Marilyn Monroe." (Well, maybe it's just me.) She was in How the West Wan Won and other things, but she was most famous for her "racy" movies like Baby Doll in the late '50s and early '60s. She played Jean Harlow in a biopic about '65 , the same year or almost that Carol Lynley did in another movie about JH.

41 Lawyers know "the process is punishment."

Cy Vance being given carte blanche to look for evidence of possible, any "crime" in a billion-dollar, international company is the most cynical abuse of prosecutorial power imaginable, and clearly violates the spirit of the Constitutional prohibition of Bills of Attainder: a "special" law or legal process designed for one person being the antithesis of rule of law.

The ABA has long been corrupted, and I note that "legal ethics" for prosecutors emphasized their essentially unlimited "discretion" to initiate an investigation, and specifically that "no predicate" or "particularized suspicion" should be be required to open an investigation. WTF? This shit has to be changed by statute or there is no law.

86 Rush was an entertainer. He was also a political junkie. He served a unique blend of those things to an audience that was unserved/underserved. Therefore, he was able to create a market for something that had a huge demand but little/no supply. That ultimately became his "obscene profit center".

He did that without going through the "proper" channels - and without espouses the "proper" messages. That's one thing that so many of the elites despise about him. Even more - they despised him because he gained a legion of followers who were so glad to finally have someone who was saying the things they were saying/thinking. He shined light onto the infections of the left and the elites of the left AND right. They hated HIM because of his appeal to US.

Who else did "they" hate because of his appeal to US???

134 20 "Rush did it for the money. Lots of it."

Most people, especially reporters, didn't understand Rush's business. They thought he worked for the company that syndicated his show and they vastly underestimated how much he made each year.

The outline was relatively easy. Out of each hour of the radio program, there were 20 minutes of commercials. Premier Radio Networks made a contract with Rush to distribute his show to 670+ stations across the country in exchange for 10 minutes per hour in advertising time. They sold national advertising and pocketed the difference between what they took in and the $50 million per year they paid Rush.

Each local station got 5 minutes per hour to sell for whatever they could in their markets in exchange for carrying the program.

However, the biggest money came from the 5 minutes each hour Rush kept for himself. The advertisers in this slot paid a massive premium so that Rush would speak personally about their product. Customers were lined up to pay because Rush's audience has a lot of money and always responded well to whatever he was selling.

229 As a practical matter, SCOTUS' refusal to hear the election cases will make it very difficult to stop the "sue and settle" tactics whereby a compromised SOS gets sued by Democrat fixers (such as Marc Elias) and enters into a consent decree that gives away the store to the Democrats, despite being contrary to state law.

Candidates (or maybe even the State Legislature itself) would need to sue immediately on the grounds that the consent decree is unconstitutional -- and then litigate the standing issue all the way up.

Oh the incestuous Prog-rock tree!

235 Squire's album Fish out of Water is a real classic. Love that album. Bruford being all over it certainly helps.

For sheer awesome power, only Wetton at his King Crimson height could top Squire. On KC's live album The Nightwatch, the version of "The Talking Drum/Larks' Tongues in Aspic Pt. II" is the loudest, gnarliest, scariest, most blow the roof off bass playing these ears have ever heard. That bass pillages, man.

The best part of that dumb take on Limbaugh is that it's the actual reverse of true. I mean, sure, Rush did it for the money, the same as everyone else does things for money.

But in his case, he actually believed in things aside from getting rich... unlike virtually every other person in the Conservative Media Ecosystem™. Rush Limbaugh and a tiny handful of other people actually weren't disingenuous lefties posing as right-wingers for a paycheck.

Which is why, of course, he made an order of magnitude more money than the madding crowd of Bowery dosshouse slatterns who made up the bulk of our fake-o political movement. Because he wasn't fronting, and people knew it.

Yes, that's what could happen. The challenger would have to argue that the harm was the consent decree itself (which has already happened), because such a decree, contrary to state law, is unconstitutional.

The problem there is that it would require the federal courts to limit their own power -- something that they are loathe to ever do.

307 Also listened to John Rich tell his story about Rush from Rich's days competing on Celebrity Apprentice. The goal of the competition was to come up with some way to promote and sell some kind of soda pop. In return for winning the CA, the winner would have $250,000 donated by the show in his/her name to St.Jude's Children's hospital. Rich wanted to up the donation to $1,000,000 so he reached out to different groups and celebrities he knew. One was Rush. Rush told him he would donate, but only if Rich agreed to not tell anyone it was Rush donating. Not Trump, or the show's producers, or other contestants or St. Jude. Rich said when the donation check arrived , it was for $100,000 and Rich was floored. He ended up winning Celebrity Apprentice, the amount donated was well over a million, and he never told anyone who the anonymous donor was until the day of Rush's death.

I wonder how much Lockhart has donated to children or medical research.

328 One of the keys to understanding modern Leftism, is they are running on the vapors or legacy of a time long ago when true liberals were genuinely educated, and very often highly educated in the true sense of the word. You could certainly argue against their policy prescriptions, and disagree with some of their premises, but they were not stupid.

Modern leftists are a sordid collection of quack hacks, and pseudo-intellectuals.

The mere fact that Republican Inc., surrenders to them, is prima facie evidence they are complicit. Rush Limbaugh wasn't breaking any new ground. I'm not trying to criticize him, or what he managed to do.

But it isn't as if he was short of material to talk about, so to speak. Anybody could do that. The truth is, Leftists are preternaturally disposed to never allowing any other viewpoint to be heard. That's how secure they are in their beliefs.

"Do what we say, or we'll kill you" is ever and always the end result.

334 Contrary to the proposal from the Morning Report - we are not Irish Democracy-ing our way out of this by annoying the state. The army of true believers they've assembled from their vast array of grievance plantations isn't going to evaporate, nor will they - as post 2016 showed us - behave themselves after an orderly transition of power.

The coming mess was probably inevitable, given the amount of effort the progs put into courting and weaponizing various groups of weirdos. It's not like objecting wouldn't have simply driven more weirdos over to them.. the time to fight this was a generation or two ago. The lesson here is that you cannot allow groups to use the machinery of the republic to blatantly scheme to eliminate the rights and protections guaranteed by the republic. Whether you fight that with statutes against conspiracy to destroy rights or with more off the books means is the question.

Sort of related and on topic... progs are hanging "RIP Rush" signs and US flags over pedestrian overpasses while filming traffic below, then running plates of people who thumbs-up them looking for people vulnerable to doxing. This is how unhinged they are and where we are in 2021.

Because no one uses turn signals in single-lane roundabouts (which are common where I am). If you're in the roundabout and it's a close call as to whether I can enter and hit speed before you get you to me, I'm not entering unless your blinker tells me you're taking my exit (getting off as I get on). Almost no one signals, which leads to confusion and makes a defensive approach reasonable.

It's unfair to subtract a man's success from who he is and why women are attracted to him. Just as much as it's wrong to subtract from women their grace and beauty. It shouldn't be 100% wealth or physical attraction, no.

But it's a part of who we are and it's ok for men and women to work hard to better that part in order to attract another human being in this often cold shithole world. A mutually satisfying, enduring, loving relationship can be and often is the result.

Jon is a space hippy who wrote crazy lyrics and danced around the stage a lot. Geddy is an incredible musician - who has no qualms listing Chris Squire as an influence. But, as far as vocalists, I'll give the nod to Jon.

Geddy is probably the main reason I just never fell for Rush, in spite of owning a bunch of albums and seeing them twice during their peak. His voice improved from Permanent Waves on IMO, but still, an acquired taste I never got. I suppose the same goes for Jon.

I was front row at a JA show 6 years ago - sat next to his wife actually (or my ex did). His voice was as good as ever at least then.

377 I know of two roundabouts in my area. One is elevated above the intersection, and dates to the '50s. Since it is set like a compass, it's easy for me to use -- but I'm the only local here who understands compass directions. Others, though, drive through it without trouble. I'm surprised, as most Gnaw-luns drivers got their licenses from a Cracker Jack box.

Back when radio was anything goes, Stern made zillions with his "say anything for a laugh" schtick, no matter how racist or sexist ( and I laughed too) and it was all good.
Now he continues to make zillions acting like he never said or did anything wrong.

I don't respect him either. He's a hypocrite and a scumbag and a weirdo pervert. Perfect voice of the Left. My point is that he's not just selling a pack of lies to the rubes in the service of a Uniparty scam. Because that's virtually all of our media, Left and Right alike. Just a con-job.

461 Most of Yes lyrics are not about a song and more about words that sound interesting together, like Jon Anderson was using his voice as an instrument. Many of them don't make a lick of sense but are pleasing to listen to. They have a sort of theme, but they aren't intelligible sentences.

464 I got the impression that Rush talked about politics because it was too important to ignore. He would have been as happy or happier talking about sports or music or technology. Also he was upset that leftist politics intruded on all that stuff and he needed to push back.

465 Sort of related and on topic... progs are hanging "RIP Rush" signs and US flags over pedestrian overpasses while filming traffic below, then running plates of people who thumbs-up them looking for people vulnerable to doxing. This is how unhinged they are and where we are in 2021.

473 Lockhart's tweet is asinine, of course. But there's only so much stupidity, so much condescension that will fit into 270 characters (or whatever their limit is these days). For true, weapons-grade, curled-upper-lip, extended-pinkie-on-the-wine-glass elitism, see Peggy Noonan's column in last Saturday's Wall Street Journal. Her take is that this whole freedom-of-speech thing is overrated, because it let Rush Limbaugh happen. Speech should be reserved for people who use it properly - people like herself.

480 I think the presumption that conservatives don't really mean it and are just doing it for the bucks comes from Morton Downey Jr. I think in a lot of leftists' minds, Rush is just a continuation of Morton Downey Jr., or maybe they're even the same person.

Also there were points in both Howard Stern's and Don Imus' careers where they were considered right wing because of the shocking things they said, and they both turned out to be pretty left wing, so critics assume that is the case for everyone

482 Rush did indeed do it for the money, as he openly said many, many times on the show (remember "obscene profit" time outs?).

He also said the purpose of the show was entertainment, not rabble-rousing.

RIP Rush. It'll be hard getting on without my daily dose of entertainment.

Posted by: 370H55V at February 22, 2021 01:23 PM (WusEB)

483 Well, Limbaugh was not a zealot, but he was a true conservative and he was conservatism's most eloquent spokesman.

He always told us that he was an entertainer, but he also told us that he was completely serious about his political beliefs. Being good at making money did not make him insincere in his beliefs.

Posted by: Ralph the Gladiator at February 22, 2021 01:48 PM (5FiEy)

484 One of the things I remember about Rush is that sometime in the early '90's a guy called in and it came up that he had lost his job and was struggling. Rush suggested they do something about this and announced a "bake sale" to help the guy (who, as I recall, lived in Idaho). The bake sale went on and Rush showed up to work at it. I don't recall any details but I was always impressed that he would do something like this. No doubt there were PR reasons but that he flew up to take part was kind of cool. I've never run across another who did anything like this (but I don't get out a lot).

I preferred that. Most bands only get into trouble when they try and be too meaningful or on point.

A more recent group that did that are the Cocteau Twins, but they made up words as well.
