50 HMM I forget the painters name but he did a couple portraits:

(Ah ha I thought so it was Gainsborough)

Pink Girl and Blue Boy

I remember they had this in a sunday week section of the Chicago Tribune a long time ago (the late 50s?) and I was fascinated by the detail and the person portrayed in Blue Boy. Who the person was and how old they were when done. I then later in life ran across the Pink Girl as also done as a compliment but that never fascinated me as much as Blue Boy. I think it was the colors and the realism. I was only 9 and little experience with art.

77 Interesting painting. The colors and textures remind me of the translucent qualities that would make Andrew Wyeth works so impressive. I wonder if Wyeth studied Whistler.

I don't know if it was deliberate, but the image in the mirror doesn't seem in concert with the rest of her face. It is sadder, possibly ill or tired. It's in contrast to the rest of her figure which is relaxed and looks comfortable.

But then some reporter pointed out that Tanden had tweeted something about Murkowski and her drug habit. So now Murkowski is "looking into" Tanden's past. Hey, when she was just insulting US, no big deal, but when she insults Lisa, now it's time to do something!

The competition for them will get fierce and actual merit might win out as the primary positive trait of those who are hired.

Because those types of jobs will be in things that are critical and need the input of a smart and rational person and much of what our work force is composed of those that are not.

Will be interesting to see whether the left's imaginary equity nonsense wins out. If so we're doomed as a technical country. We will truly be less than a 3rd world country. We will sink lower than Muslim countries medieval level.

Illegals still demand wages subject to the minimum wage. If MW is $10 they will work for $8. But if MW is $15 they will demand more as well. And with Bidens immigration plans they will all be legal soon enough and subject to $15 as well.

Any industry that uses cheap unskilled labor will automate more. And not just MW workers. Someone making $20 now will not work for $20 if the MW is $15. He will demand $25 and so on up the wage scale. Idiots like Hayes never understand the inflationary aspects of this across the board.

The McDonald's here has never opened up it's inside dining room even though they can at 75% capacity since covid closed it last April. They have three people running the place and it's drive through only. They let four people go when they closed up and have no intention of ever reopening inside dining. They are more driven by personal grudges and the universal desire of those in power not to appear ridiculous while letting the country happily rot.

Government by a debased aristocracy is one of the worst types of government in history unless the aristo faction has strong moral values and tempers its appetites for power, money, and sex. Otherwise, it results in misrule and eventually a tyrant to sweep away this class and the mess it made.

They have three people running the place and it's drive through only. They let four people go when they closed up and have no intention of ever reopening inside dining. If the $15 minimum wage is passed you can expect to see the same thing happening all over.

To be fair, who wants to go inside of a McDonalds, anyway?

204 The problem with the $15 hour minimum wage is that there are numerous problems with it. Mainly, you pour more liquid into the "wages" end of the closed system ("economy") and the level rises to the same degree in the "prices" end of the system. What's next from brain-boys like Ro Khanna - price controls? Government mandated, fixed prices? THEY think they're smart enough to do that...but they aren't. Welcome to the Black Market, where people CONTINUE to convert government benefits into salable goods that they sell without taxes at well below the "fixed" price (hey, look at that...market Capitalism!.)

281 If you go back 50 years will see that the minimum
wage wage has been around 3 to 4 gallons of gas. There have been
fluctuations of that, but if you smooth out the graphs that is the
ratio. This is not by design but because of how economics works. Raise
the MW a lot and all it does is make everything else more expensive as
well. The purchasing power of the MW will never change because govt
cannot create wealth no matter what Democrats tell you.

Posted by: Joe XiDen at February 25, 2021 10:19 AM

By that reckoning the MW is just about right where it should be at $7.25 at least here in NE Texas. Gas is $2.25 a gallon.

IMO there should not be a Federal MW, each State should set their own. No way does a small business survive in rural Kentucky paying $15 an hour.

Posted by: Mister Scott (formerly GWS) at February 25, 2021 10:23 AM (JUOKG)

282 Another yuuuge lie from the left is that $15 MW means millions no longer have to rely on food stamps. Bullshit!! The threshold for welfare qualification is a percent of median income. If the median income increase, as it Will will a doubling of the MW, then the threshold to qualify for food stamp also increases. If the threshold was $30k, then it will be $40k with the increase. Which means the same people will still get food stamps.

You might mean VALUE instead of WEALTH.

The gov't does spend a lot of time trying to create VALUE out of things or people that have little for whatever reason.

It never works because the work involved to make people accept that VALUE is more than is returned or at least doesn't live up to expectations by the bureaucrats.

Another reason bureaucrats get angry/frustrated by the citizens is they don't perform as expected or demanded by the bureaucracy.

Wilson writes from a libertarian perspective. Decent job of providing useful information without being too preachy though.

Alternatively, Fernando Aguirre has written a non fictional account of the day to day struggle to survive after Argentina went through its financial collapse in 2001. The Modern Survival Manual: Surviving an Economic Collapse.

Everybody looks like crap on Zoom and Facetime. The only ones who do not use all kinds of apparatuses and techniques , or tricks , to make them look better. Lighting is key, as is the actual physical placement of the phone or computer. If you do a search on youtube, there are lots of videos explaining how to do this. Sometimes it's as simple as putting the light behind your phone and raising your phone to an angle higher than your face.

324 304 MMT ignores one particular bit of information--expectations of individuals. If people expect the money to be worthless, they will not accept it as a medium of exchange but instead demand physical goods that can be traded or bartered. A move to other valuables such as silver and gold as a means of transaction will also occur.

So under MMT, you can issue as much monopoly money as you wish but under such conditions that have been repeatedly demonstrated historically, it will rapidly depreciate a fiat currency to zero and kills its value as a medium of exchange.

Historically, fiat currencies last about 75 years or so before spiraling into hyperinflation followed by financial collapse in that order.

Most hyperinflationary governments simply cannot raise salaries fast enough to maintain buying power and personnel costs eventually eat all the discretionary spending on other things.

386 365 Brother Tim,
Doesn't help when there are no goods to buy. Currency simply does not represent wealth but is a medium of exchange. When exchanges break down, there are no goods to be purchased at any price.

The existence of a scrip by itself does not create any goods. That can only function if the government can import such goods or cause them to be produced which is generally fails at doing so. A worthless currency makes it difficult to import goods as well. The usual means is that the regime simply takes goods that are stores of wealth and sells them abroad like the Sov. Union did with decadent art and jewelry of the monarchy.

In almost every country with hyperinflation though, governmental authority disintegrates as people will do whatever they need to do to survive. The usual result is to get a tyrant in power to enforce some kind of fairness in distribution of goods and wiping out the financier class.

408 384 Hrothgar,
Perhaps, perhaps not, regarding black markets. We are rapidly sliding from a high trust society to a low trust, not to mention most current immigrants coming here come from low trust societies.

Argentina, which is more culturally homogeneous still saw a massive increase in crimes and the most common one in black markets is simply stealing what the other has and if one is a black market supplier, you cannot really go to the police to enforce activities.

Some interesting post war reports from occupied Germany after WWII give some pretty good information on how black markets worked in that country after 1945 and until the new government was more or less organized. Germany was a high trust society at the time.

420 391, Hrothgar, the smart financiers flee the country with what they can take with them before the tyrant arrives. The dumb ones and their wealth are liquidated as enemies of the people. That is the usual result in history.

I would also not be surprised that a tyrant seizes and liquidates all of these non profit foundations including endowment funds. Henry the VIII did with with churches and monasteries.

423 In almost every country with hyperinflation though, governmental authority disintegrates as people will do whatever they need to do to survive. The usual result is to get a tyrant in power to enforce some kind of fairness in distribution of goods and wiping out the financier class.

Posted by: whig

This is where the specifics come in. Like the Soviet insiders, the USSA insiders will find goods, all imported of course. Everyone else has to make do. Often the insiders will have to make their own deals; these will be "overlooked" officially, because otherwise why be an insider? It won't be a stable arrangement, it never is, but it is the arc it will follow, because it's ALWAYS the arc it follows.

The big problem this time, of course, is that without some big, prosperous economic power willing to blindly sell to anyone, those goods will degrade and dry up much more quickly. Since this time it's the core motor seizing up with nothing to replace it, trade will collapse globally--the Chinese will note bitterly, I'm certain, how their "victory" was their downfall!--and it will truly be every nation, tribe, family, or person for themselves, for a while anyway.

425 I see it devolving into tribal groups. Not in the tribe? You don't get to trade or barter. Tribes equate to family and neighbor trust groups. Newcomers are on probation, and may well starve.

426 USAF Chief of Staff Gen. Charlie Brown says we need a low cost fighter since the JSF F-35 is so darn expensive - https://valorguardians.com/blog/?p=110831

Color me surprised. Not. The JSF started in the late 1980s as only a replacement for the Harrier. Then everyone decided to make their own silk purse out of the JSF sow's ear so now the F-35 is even less interchangeable than the various flavors of the TFX - F-111A, F-111C, F-111D, F-111E, F-111F, and the FB-111A.

427 Barter: Survival kit contents check. In them you'll find: one forty-five caliber
automatic; two boxes of ammunition; four days' concentrated emergency
rations; one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills,
pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills; one miniature
combination Russian phrase book and Bible; one hundred dollars in
rubles; one hundred dollars in gold; nine packs of chewing gum; one
issue of prophylactics; three lipsticks; three pair of nylon stockings.
Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that
stuff.

429 The federales will be the least of the problems in a
hyperinflationary era as the wages of the fed employees and their
pensions go to zero as well.
Most hyperinflationary governments simply
cannot raise salaries fast enough to maintain buying power and personnel
costs eventually eat all the discretionary spending on other things.

Good points, but in a truly global collapse, I am not sure where one could run to and feel at all safe from an all powerful rapacious government. Safe havens seem, at least to me, to be rare these days, as they require stable and bribe friendly quasi-honest government officials (that would owe a US citizen not the least bit of allegiance, thus seemingly untrustworthy)!
