On the February 4 episode of National Public Radio’s "Fresh Air" program, Dr. Anthony Fauci, who has led the NIAID since 1984, admitted to frequenting gay bars and bath houses in the 1980s, so he could gain a better scientific understanding of how HIV and AIDS spread among the homosexual population. In the radio program, Fauci admitted that the federal government did not listen to the concerns of gay activists in the 1980s, who felt the government was not listening to their concerns about a new disease that scientists knew virtually nothing about and spread through the gay community like wildfire. In response, Fauci said he asked himself, "Let me put myself in their shoes. If I were in their position, what would I be doing?"
Fauci further said: "I went to the Castro District. I went down to Greenwich Village, and I went into bathhouses to essentially see what was going on." See, he didn't know what went on in gay bathhouses, without personally inspecting them. By the way, Fauci went on to blame the spread of AIDS on conservatives:
To gain a direct and personal understanding of the sexual habits of gay men in the 1980s, Fauci then began visiting gay bars and bath houses in a sort of undercover role. .. The revelation that gay men were visiting gay bath houses for the purpose of anonymous, often unprotected sex with other men provoked many cities and states to ban gay bath houses. Gay activists, both at the time and still today, considered this a civil rights violation. ... Fauci was famously lambasted by conservatives in April of last year, when he recommended that sports, schools, businesses, and other necessities of life immediately cease operations to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but also gave his support to individuals using hookup apps like Tinder and its LGBT-exclusive counterpart Grindr to have casual sex.
He noted that then-President Ronald Reagan and his religious right supporters made HIV and AIDS research a lot harder, but he doesn’t think Reagan personally hated gay people. "I believe, because of a large part of his constituency was that way, what he did not do is he did not use the bully pulpit of the presidency to gain support and attention to what was going on right in front of everyone’s eyes," Fauci said.Of course that's a complete lie -- but one cherished by the left. The left, and the gay left especially, insisted on propagating the lie that "AIDS infects everyone" because they didn't want any special attention paid to gays or insanely infectious practices like anonymous gay sex in bathhouses. So they subjected the entire United States to a Sexual Lockdown instead of owning up to the reality that gay men, and not straight men or women, needed to change their sexual behaviors. You had straight college kids using "dental dams" when a guy went down on a girl. Okay, that's a lie, no one in history ever used those, but it was certainly propagandized that you had to use a dental dam if you did a favor for Sweet Suzy. This also had the obvious unintended consequence of denying the truth of the only method of controlling the spread of AIDS. Hmm, demanding that everyone go into a lockdown instead of the population actually at risk going into lockdown...? Why does that sound so blasted familiar? The left doesn't want to admit that their own addiction to semi- or fully anonymous gay sex spread AIDS, so of course this "Scientist" blames it on the Politically Mandated Scapegoat. He's always been a leftwing political operator, not a scientist. Witness his glib efforts to redefine "The Science" to support whatever the Democrat Party's coalition groups want to be "The Science" at this current moment:

But I was able to effect a repair on my little three-dollar multimeter from Hazard Fraught, which broke when it fell on the tile floor. A plastic stud which accepts one of the 4 screws holding the circuit board to the case broke. A little super glue fixed that, and the instrument now works OK.

This just completely misapprehends how epidemiology works. You cannot do anything other than make hypotheses to be tested based on first-hand observations made in an uncontrolled environment. This is why doctors' observations based on their treatment of patients are mere case reports rather than the basis for epidemiological data. I spent a LOT of time in SF in the 70's and early 80's. Friends lived there or went to college there. So I got to see all of the gay renaissance of the late 70's. Seriously, the bars and restaurants were bad enough. There wasn't a single person who was confused as to what went on in the bath houses. You went there for one reason, and you'd have to try hard to not have multiple partners.
City supervisors and Feinstein fought tooth and nail to prevent this from being a "gay" thing, and also closing the bath houses. I imagined at the time there was a huge tourist industry - and in fact there was. It always boils down to money. I think that the airline behaved horrifically and the threats are inexcusable, but the optics say "tone deaf". He could have made up a reason for the family to be in DC, but Cancun vacation, looks like he didn't give a shit. Making noise in DC would have made better headlines.

Marcus T, my elderly devoutly church-going maiden aunt drove Meals on Wheels to shut-in gay men dying of AIDS for years, several days each week.
I inherited a set of graves to care for from her when she died (we do the annual trim and spruce on Memorial Day for family and friends), of young men with no one, long dead.
She brought them flowers each year, trimmed the grass and cleaned the headstones, and said a prayer.

What has happened to some degree is that we are simply having kids when we are older...sometimes that works out. In my wife and my case, it worked out once but not the second time.
My son was born with an undiagnosed chromosomal abnormality, subtle but there. He's been diagnosed with autism but that is just a catchall now for these abnormalities. You have to get a Fscher Array done and that will tell you exactly what chromosome was effected and how (crimp, missing or deletion of a gene, addition of a protein, etc.) My wife never had the heart to have it done...

That is the lame 'message' appended to the end of the Matthew Modine movie about the rise of GRID/AIDS "And The Band Played On". The movie (so far as I can tell) pretty faithfully recounts the progression of the disease and the vociferous resistance of the gay community to closing down bathhouses or other public health measures but then, at the end, makes a daft attempt to put all the blame Reagan because he didn't make a speech about it as quickly as some would like.
I've thought about that movie a bunch since the go-to "solution" to the CCP Virus became endless lockdowns. Suffice it to say that the resistance of gay bathhouse patrons to closing down their anonymous sex parlors was not characterized the way resistance to locking down the entire country has been over the last 10 months.
