Whale protects diver from shark.

Naturalists study meerkats by introducing a meerkat robot with a camera in it. Then, to see how they deal with cobras, they introduce a robot cobra.

BBC Earth is getting good ratings with these animatronic robot spies, I guess, because they keep on prankin' animals.

They introduce a robotic wild dog to a pack of actual wild dogs.

The same pack of wild dogs tries to hide the pups from a hungry lioness looking for lunch. The spy dog is present, but the lion doesn't go after it.

Spy wolf pup.

This Gizmo-looking camera robot gets licked by chimps. Then they send in a robotic spy-tortoise. One chimp adopts it as a pet.

And once, in the late 1980's, a friend and I were driving down Benson Blvd (Anchorage folks know this place) and saw the two dudes from America walking on the bike path, and offered them a ride. Saw them the night before at the Fly By Night Club.

Not truly famous, but if your name is Dewey Bunnell....well, that's as close as you get to stardom.

I and my guitar-playing friend (whom I've mentioned here before) backed up Jimmie Vaughn at a meet-and-greet at the music store where he worked back in '098. Our drummer was there too so we had the rhythm section ready for him. He walked up on stage while the store's band was outside so we followed him. They were all rock guys and prolly wouldn't know even who he was. Had a blast playing two songs with him. As we were exiting the stage, he says to a friend of ours, "Good band..."

Once they got off the first tee, they all pulled out bottles of hooch and started drinking. By the 4th hole they were all singing bawdy tunes and having a blast.

This surprises me. I've seen him in two different airports. Each time with his security and one guy was carrying a handful of pictures. He stopped at every little kid who said hi or came up to him. Very nice of him.

I have spoken to lots of politicos over the years and even glared at Tweety and the guy that was on stage when Howard Dean did his scream. That last guy used to live around me. I would see him around getting take out here and there, not sure if he was married but he seemed to be alone a lot.

I did have a chance to "meet" someone famous before they were famous. A family friend asked me to escort a young high school basketball star to a meet and greet/try out with a local college team. I was then supposed to take him to my house and watch movies. I had no interest in that at all because I was a recent college grad and didn't have any interest in hanging out with a high school junior I didn't know from Adam. It didn't help that I could not stand that college team.

In the early days of the internet, I wrote for a well-known music site that I won't name as it's still around, in one form, though a mere shadow of what it once was. I met a lot of famous people at shows and events, and more in phone interviews.

Lot of cool people, some azzholes. Geoff Downes (The Buggles/Asia/Yes) once engaged in a vicious (well, one-sided on his side) e-mail flame war with me over an offhand comment I made in an otherwise glowing article. Dude came at me over basically nothing, contacted the editor of the site, tried to get me fired (did not succeed.) I still admire him as a musician.

I hear you. I was always assigned to the CODELs that came through whatever embassy I was at. Out of all the congressmen, senators and cabinets types who boondoggled, there was one congressman from Ohio who was amazing. Came to do his own study of the Turkish/Greek Cypriot hostilities, asked me to get him some research material and translate a few pieces, but otherwise didn't want me or the embassy to go to any trouble for him. Sadly I do not remember his name, but I remember how he behaved, and I was impressed. His constituents were lucky because he was diligent.

The first five people to sink a free-throw are on a team and they get to play the last winning team. Bradley didn't get to play much because he couldn't shoot.

One opened a club, and for his birthday, there was a concert and a buffet. He came in, got in line, and ate. No one hassled him, despite the room consisting entirely of big fans. Aim Surplus has some AeroPrecision complete AR 15 lowers for four franklins with some billet receivers for a little over one franklin. Another great company with very fast shipping. Aim usually has some great prices on their house brand AR parts. DeltaTeamTactical is also pretty decent out of Utah with AR parts.

257 AOP not sure what your doing wrong, pole sander should work fine.
Sanding grit 100 for rough, 120 for finish and worn a bit is better.
I light sand or take a blade and scrap high spots after first coat to cut down piling it on.

There's a way cool Rockpile documentary, free on the youtoobs. You get to see Edmunds and Lowe and the guys working in the studio, how it's all put together. A young and unknown Huey Lewis drops by to blow some harp, Phil Lynott's in it. Great video. Not to compare my meager recording career to greats like them, but I spent enough long hours in the studio to know that it's the most realistic portrayal of the making of an album I've seen.

The miniseries based on the first 2 books of the trilogy was great and had one helluva star-studded cast, including Patrick Swayze, Kirstie Allie, Charles Emerson Winchester III (whoever the actor was), Will Frakes (Riker) and Genie Francis (Laura) who met on the set IIRC, Wayne Newton, and Robert Caradine among others.

Dry, British wit but she's genuinely funny and has an amazing memory - giving me details of recording sessions from the Peter Green days, when she wasn't even in the band yet but did some sessions...really amazing memory, but my lingering impression of her was: she is one cool-ass, wonderful lady.

A plant supports about 20k households. Replace the core every five years or so. Local. Not dangerous like uranium based nukes. Raw fuel can be mined from nearly anywhere.
TVA invented the technology, had examples running in test mode, and finally abandoned in 1973, not because the technology didn't work, but the DOD couldn't make bombs out of it.
Bill Gates has actually spent some money on this, one of the very few things I will give him props about, and the Chinese Communists have been working at it now for about 10 years.
But the BidenCCP government has no desire to help Americans live better, so I expect little to happen.

the so-called "well head issue" is misinformation, being put out by ERCOT to cover their failures. A couple cities like Grand Prairie had some low pressure because of too many industrial plants on a small feed trying to rely on it because of no electricity, but my Nat Gas line saved me (i have burners in my house I used to keep warm even with no electricity.) Never a blip of low pressure on the home lines.

Meh. Thorium is a Red herring. You cannot mine it "nearly anywhere". Thorium minerals occur naturally in very sparse amounts in certain granitic rocks. AFAIK, the only commercial mining for thorium is in India, where millions of years of weathering and wave action have concentrated the mineral monazite in beach sands, from which it is recovered by placer mining methods.

Knock down Mt. Rushmore, grind it into sand, and you might get a few tons of monazite out of it.

Depends on what level of service you need. Typically it's about 10 - 15K for a "normal" sized home - turn key.

There's also hybrid solutions where you use a normal portable generator and a manual transfer switch to power essential circuits in your home. Half that price.

583 The major issue with a whole house nat gas generator is that you are restricted by the gas line size coming into the house and to the generator and if the whole neighborhood is drawing gas from a huge winter event and/or you are using a bunch of natgas to do the same, then the line pressures go down and something has to give.

It is not a simple add in just for the generator but is fairly complex. You can go propane but then you have the tank and the larger the generator, the faster it sucks fuel.

BTW, former FIL had a big propane tank for his really big house in central WI. Damn tank was huge, like a big one at a fueling station. It sat on a big concrete pad, and a big truck would come in, drop the new full one, pick up the old on onto the truck, and then move the full one into place and hook it up. It was quite the operation.
Delivery person knew exactly what to do.

yep, it's the ease of liquefaction that makes propane and butane attractive - a large amount of energy can be stored in a small tank. Propane needs pressure to be liquified at room temperature, hence the larger, heavier tanks. Methane is the most efficient burning, but you have to get to 260 degrees below zero (F) to liquify it. So, methane is only used for things that can be hooked up to a permanent pipeline.

Someone in Alabama, I think it was a TVA plant got up and running. It was an old plant that had been shut down prior to start up. The two sets of Westinghouse AP1000's (Georgia and South Carolina) are supposed to be the wave of the future, but if they don't get up and running no one will risk building anymore. I'm debating going to DFW tomorrow (i need to) but I might put it off til Saturday - I'm in Tyler, still 3 to 4 inches of packed snow and ice on most of the road surfaces. I've been able to drive around some, but I feel like I'm going way too fast if I get up to 20 mph.

JB Weld is amazing stuff. Had an airbed coffee roaster, 240v, 60a, operated at 550F normally. The electronics screwed up and it went to over 700F and shut down. Cracked a cast iron fitting. Called the mfgr, was told "those don't crack, no we don't sell replacements, and you can buy a used one and scavenge the part if you want to."
Uh, no thanks, I don't want to drop 5k. Was whining, a car repair guy a few doors down listened to my whining as he stopped by to get his coffee and said, "try JB Weld, that stuff works on everything."
Sure enough, he repaired the part in less than 15 minutes, let it cure, and the machine still runs to this day, over a decade later, for it's new owner.

672 At my place in Alberta, I have a couple of Onan RV generators, but I have never run them. My go-to for power outages is a 3500 watt Coleman generator with an 8-horse Briggs and Stratton engine on it.

In the event of a power outage, I pull the main switch at the service pole so as not to backfeed the line, then set the generator on the apron outside the garage door, and fuel it up, and start it. Wrap the rope around the starter cup, and pull, old school. Once it's going, I run my cheater cord from the 240 volt outlet on the generator to the welder out just inside the garage door. Garage lights will come on, and so will the house. I'm careful to run just a few lights, my fridge, and my computer. Furnace needs only 60 watts or so for circulating pump. I got about 4 hours on a tank of gasoline.

Winter of my last year in law school, still a butter bar in the MANG, we were setting up signal rigs on some small island in Mass Bay. It was sleeting hard and as the platoon leader, I had a warm vehicle i could "chill" in but I didn't (except to do some paperwork that was otherwise impossible). I was out there with my troops and I just had the same standard issue gear they had. I didn't like it one bit less than my junior enlisted, but it was important to me to be out there with them. Why the hell we were out there to begin with I have no idea.

I think about twenty feet or so deep, it's a constant 50 degrees, for much of North America. For deep mines, heat becomes a problem around 3000 feet or so. I recollect seeing temps of 80C on well logs for wells in the range of 1000 to 2000 meters.

The Kola borehole was in a vey cool spot, that's why they picked the location. On the gulf coast you'll be over 500 degrees by 20,000 feet down.

Reminds me of a couple of years ago, when the City Of Austin was subjected to abnormal rainfall and biblical floods. The city's water supply system flooded out and was out of commission for days while power and the treatment plants were cleaned and restored. There was a boiling water regime in place for awhile. I should know. I arrived at Bergstrom while that BS was happening. First stop was the men's room. When I reached for the sink's hot water, the guy next to me said "I wouldn't do that right now."
