This one doesn't seem to be fleeing an orca. He just seems to want to relax for a bit. Whale protects diver from shark. Naturalists study meerkats by introducing a meerkat robot with a camera in it. Then, to see how they deal with cobras, they introduce a robot cobra. BBC Earth is getting good ratings with these animatronic robot spies, I guess, because they keep on prankin' animals. They introduce a robotic wild dog to a pack of actual wild dogs. The same pack of wild dogs tries to hide the pups from a hungry lioness looking for lunch. The spy dog is present, but the lion doesn't go after it. Spy wolf pup. This Gizmo-looking camera robot gets licked by chimps. Then they send in a robotic spy-tortoise. One chimp adopts it as a pet.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)Posted by: Soothsayer's Untrue But Accurate Tales at February 18, 2021 06:59 PM (+voN6) 2

Dolphins are heroes : "Navy dolphins are trained ....to find underwater mines-often ones that are tricky to locate, half-buried, and hundreds of meters deep-so that the Navy can map their presence and avoid them in combat. Second, they learn to flag the presence of enemy swimmers...to alert the Navy rather than attack. "

Cats can see colors (somewhat muted though), have excellent hearing, much better emotional sensitivity than thought, and are natural puzzle/problem solvers. I wonder if it would be possible to use colored keys and at least teach a cat that different colors correspond to different tones such that the cat could actually play something.

Buddy Mercury's world-wide musical debut is truly a wonder to behold. His use of counterpoint combined with the classic fugue is a truly groundbreaking musical accomplishment unequaled by any of today's so-called "superstar composers." Listen and be amazed at Buddy's mercurial use of rhythm as he dances across the piano keys unencumbered by convention as we currently know it. His control of both motive and emotive urges stretches the listener's realm of the known.
To hear him is to truly explore the animal nature in all of us. Posted by: BackwardsBoy, who did not vote for this shit at February 18, 2021 07:20 PM (HaL55) 91

I and my guitar-playing friend (whom I've mentioned here before) backed up Jimmie Vaughn at a meet-and-greet at the music store where he worked back in '098. Our drummer was there too so we had the rhythm section ready for him. He walked up on stage while the store's band was outside so we followed him. They were all rock guys and prolly wouldn't know even who he was. Had a blast playing two songs with him. As we were exiting the stage, he says to a friend of ours, "Good band..." I met Wilbur Marshal in a golf shop once. We chatted a bit. Really I think it depends on what the definition of "met" means. I guess it means different things to different people. I have spoken to lots of politicos over the years and even glared at Tweety and the guy that was on stage when Howard Dean did his scream. That last guy used to live around me. I would see him around getting take out here and there, not sure if he was married but he seemed to be alone a lot.
I did have a chance to "meet" someone famous before they were famous. A family friend asked me to escort a young high school basketball star to a meet and greet/try out with a local college team. I was then supposed to take him to my house and watch movies. I had no interest in that at all because I was a recent college grad and didn't have any interest in hanging out with a high school junior I didn't know from Adam. It didn't help that I could not stand that college team. Posted by: Quint at February 18, 2021 07:31 PM (Veofh) 163

I've met a lot of famous people, many semi-famous people. I met Trump at an event in WNY in the early 90s. He's bigger in person than he looks on TV, which is already pretty big. Had the entourage, the long coat, the whole bit. Shook his hand. It was normal-sized.
In the early days of the internet, I wrote for a well-known music site that I won't name as it's still around, in one form, though a mere shadow of what it once was. I met a lot of famous people at shows and events, and more in phone interviews. Lot of cool people, some azzholes. Geoff Downes (The Buggles/Asia/Yes) once engaged in a vicious (well, one-sided on his side) e-mail flame war with me over an offhand comment I made in an otherwise glowing article. Dude came at me over basically nothing, contacted the editor of the site, tried to get me fired (did not succeed.) I still admire him as a musician. Out of all the congressmen, senators and cabinets types who boondoggled, there was one congressman from Ohio who was amazing. Came to do his own study of the Turkish/Greek Cypriot hostilities, asked me to get him some research material and translate a few pieces, but otherwise didn't want me or the embassy to go to any trouble for him. Yeah, he wasn't great. He went on a LDS mission, so that means he went to the Missionary Training Center for a few weeks. One day a week, missionaries get some free time to write letters, do laundry, play basketball, etc. At the MTC, when missionaries are playing basketball, they have a simple system to figure out who gets to play next. The first five people to sink a free-throw are on a team and they get to play the last winning team. Bradley didn't get to play much because he couldn't shoot. The whole celebrity thing is weird to me. I was a big fan of (band you've heard of). After their lead guitarist died, they disbanded and made music on their own (or sometimes together). One opened a club, and for his birthday, there was a concert and a buffet. He came in, got in line, and ate. No one hassled him, despite the room consisting entirely of big fans. That's how it should be, I think. They're just people.

186 LeftCoastDawg, no problem. Primary Arms is one of the best kept secrets regarding fast shipping and good service. I prefer them over Palmetto State Armory due to much less delay in shipping and comparable prices.
Aim Surplus has some AeroPrecision complete AR 15 lowers for four franklins with some billet receivers for a little over one franklin. Another great company with very fast shipping. Aim usually has some great prices on their house brand AR parts. DeltaTeamTactical is also pretty decent out of Utah with AR parts. famous people I met? When I waitressed in Soho I used to see Harvey Keitel all the time. He called me 'Choch." Bill Murray came in; I made a couple of jokes the first time he was there, the second time he brought a crowd and stole my material. I met Chuck Yeager and Tom Wolfe at a Theodore Roosevelt Association event. Chuck was awesome. I met PJ O'Rourke at a book signing event and got him to autograph my copy of Parliament of Whores.
I saw Derek Jeter walking down Second Avenue (when he was in his prime) and my ovaries exploded. And Otto Preminger on Madison Avenue. I followed him 'cause I wasn't sure it was him, said "Naaah" and looked in Tiffany's windows and he came up behind me. I said 'Hiya Mr. Preminger, wanna make me a star? and he said "that depends on what you want to do for it." which explains my meteoric career in showbiz. We can't do much about #3 since they fully intend to do us harm. However, we need to start putting pressure on #2 and publicly shaming them, because they're as much a problem as #3 now. Posted by: Brisco County Sr at February 18, 2021 08:14 PM (DBPIP) 366

Another good one from my music-writin' days was Christine McVie. The woman is just the epitome of cool. Been literally everywhere, knows literally everyone. Dry, British wit but she's genuinely funny and has an amazing memory - giving me details of recording sessions from the Peter Green days, when she wasn't even in the band yet but did some sessions...really amazing memory, but my lingering impression of her was: she is one cool-ass, wonderful lady.
I asked her if she was uneasy at all when another female songwriter joined the band, Stevie, and she grinned and said: "Oh, I usually write about love. That's kind of my thing. And Stevie writes all her wonderfully weird mystical shit, so there was room for both of us." Posted by: Guy Smiley at February 18, 2021 08:17 PM (Bmy3R) 376

Sven brushes with celebrity over the years. I met Jake the Snake Roberts back in 1987 at a bar in dayton. I was 15, it was pretty cool.
I met Mark Gastineau at the same bar back in 1984 it was a little dive near the Mead building. I guarded several adult performers when I did personal protection, most noteworthy was Mimi Miyagi who ran recently IIRC for governor of Nevada. I guarded Pete Rose, I was a doorman for a few bands, I had a nice exchange with Neil Armstrong once at the USAF Museum. George Bush the elder recognized me at a campaign rally in 1988. I began my political activism in a "someone shut off the irony" sense back in 1987 for Mike DeWine whom I would now walk across the street to avoid. Local power plants for every city over 50K, but economy of scale is an issue here. Posted by: NaCly Dog at February 18, 2021 08:54 PM (u82oZ) Thorium power plants. A plant supports about 20k households. Replace the core every five years or so. Local. Not dangerous like uranium based nukes. Raw fuel can be mined from nearly anywhere. TVA invented the technology, had examples running in test mode, and finally abandoned in 1973, not because the technology didn't work, but the DOD couldn't make bombs out of it. Bill Gates has actually spent some money on this, one of the very few things I will give him props about, and the Chinese Communists have been working at it now for about 10 years. But the BidenCCP government has no desire to help Americans live better, so I expect little to happen. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at February 18, 2021 09:05 PM (sy5kK) 545

You cannot mine it "nearly anywhere". Thorium minerals occur naturally in very sparse amounts in certain granitic rocks. AFAIK, the only commercial mining for thorium is in India, where millions of years of weathering and wave action have concentrated the mineral monazite in beach sands, from which it is recovered by placer mining methods. Knock down Mt. Rushmore, grind it into sand, and you might get a few tons of monazite out of it. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 18, 2021 09:16 PM (mzC78) 577

Depends on what level of service you need. Typically it's about 10 - 15K for a "normal" sized home - turn key. There's also hybrid solutions where you use a normal portable generator and a manual transfer switch to power essential circuits in your home. Half that price. Posted by: confederatefifth at February 18, 2021 09:17 PM (4Jold) 583
The major issue with a whole house nat gas generator is that you are restricted by the gas line size coming into the house and to the generator and if the whole neighborhood is drawing gas from a huge winter event and/or you are using a bunch of natgas to do the same, then the line pressures go down and something has to give.
It is not a simple add in just for the generator but is fairly complex. You can go propane but then you have the tank and the larger the generator, the faster it sucks fuel. Posted by: whig at February 18, 2021 09:18 PM (pO7gM) 584

Posted by: NaCly Dog at February 18, 2021 09:12 PM (u82oZ) yep, it's the ease of liquefaction that makes propane and butane attractive - a large amount of energy can be stored in a small tank. Propane needs pressure to be liquified at room temperature, hence the larger, heavier tanks. Methane is the most efficient burning, but you have to get to 260 degrees below zero (F) to liquify it. So, methane is only used for things that can be hooked up to a permanent pipeline. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 18, 2021 09:21 PM (bxPTJ) 595

609 I have a 300 gallon propane tank for our furnace and fireplace. It gets filled once a year. I'd spring for a propane whole house generator if I really though my portable wasn't up to the task.

Not to mention HOA approval, local ordinances, state regulations governing the tank, how far the tank is from the house and neighboring residences. In most jurisdictions, the tank has to be buried.

590 Infidel, if you have gas throughout the house, then you have a hard limit of cubic ft per hour on a certain sized service line (1/2, 3/4, and so on) based on your service line at the meter. Then you have the size of the pipe to the generator plus whether or not it is upstream or downstream from other gas sucking appliances like a furnace or a on demand whole house water heater or gas fireplaces.
If you put in a whole house generator, there are some siting issues such as distance from house for code compliance, prevailing winds, exhaust stack to keep from carbon monoxide inflow into house, the cost to run the heavy gauge power lines to the transfer switch and from there to your box, and so on. At my place in Alberta, I have a couple of Onan RV generators, but I have never run them. My go-to for power outages is a 3500 watt Coleman generator with an 8-horse Briggs and Stratton engine on it.
In the event of a power outage, I pull the main switch at the service pole so as not to backfeed the line, then set the generator on the apron outside the garage door, and fuel it up, and start it. Wrap the rope around the starter cup, and pull, old school. Once it's going, I run my cheater cord from the 240 volt outlet on the generator to the welder out just inside the garage door. Garage lights will come on, and so will the house. I'm careful to run just a few lights, my fridge, and my computer. Furnace needs only 60 watts or so for circulating pump. I got about 4 hours on a tank of gasoline. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 18, 2021 09:43 PM (mzC78) 673

A lot of cities in Texas are having water problems right now - I haven't had any water pressure for 2 days now, and Fort Worth, where Teresa is, reports over 200,000 residents with no clean water tonight.
It seems the common thread is that cities didn't anticipate that all of their pumping stations would go down when the power went down all over, and then the lines got contaminated with untreated water and its going to take days to get all these systems back up and running. Basically almost all of Texas has been completely shut down for the entire week. No power, no water, no businesses open, nothing. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 18, 2021 09:49 PM (bxPTJ) 693

I was out there with my troops and I just had the same standard issue gear they had. I didn't like it one bit less than my junior enlisted, but it was important to me to be out there with them. Why the hell we were out there to begin with I have no idea. Posted by: SFGoth at February 18, 2021 09:50 PM (KAi1n) Posted by: Lousagirl at February 18, 2021 09:51 PM (WaU8G) 699
How far down do you have to dig before things start warming up? (I don't mean Kola superdeep borehole hot (356F).)
Posted by: SFGoth at February 18, 2021 09:45 PM (KAi1n) I think about twenty feet or so deep, it's a constant 50 degrees, for much of North America. For deep mines, heat becomes a problem around 3000 feet or so. I recollect seeing temps of 80C on well logs for wells in the range of 1000 to 2000 meters. This is the knock I've always had on Ted Cruz, and those that love him. They just don't fvckin' "get it". They don't understand leadership. They don't understand why Ted is not a leader.
Posted by: Main Street at February 18, 2021 09:45 PM (OneoG) I like Cruz, but I don't have any illusions about him. He's probably the top Trial Lawyer in government in any position. But remember one of the most important requirements for being a Top Trial Lawyer is that you've got to be one of the biggest assholes you ever met. You can't fault him for being what he is. If he wasn't an asshole you never would have known his name. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 18, 2021 09:52 PM (bxPTJ) 701

It depends. If you're drilling a geothermal pipe in Yellowstone National Park, the safe answer is "not too far".
Posted by: mrp I'm thinking more along the lines of a heat cellar. We have this hot ball of molten iron at the center of the Earth and it generates heat. How far down do you have to go to get a balmy 50 degrees when it's below zero above ground? Posted by: SFGoth at February 18, 2021 09:53 PM (KAi1n) 703
Basically almost all of Texas has been completely shut down for the entire week. No power, no water, no businesses open, nothing.
--- I'm really surprised at all the problems. If I had to predict which states would have infrastructure failures, TX wouldn't even have made my list. Posted by: Meade Lux Lewis, Domestic Terrorist at February 18, 2021 09:54 PM (sWM8x) 704

Posted by: SFGoth at February 18, 2021 09:45 PM (KAi1n) The Kola borehole was in a vey cool spot, that's why they picked the location. On the gulf coast you'll be over 500 degrees by 20,000 feet down. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 18, 2021 09:55 PM (bxPTJ) 705
It seems the common thread is that cities didn't anticipate that all of
their pumping stations would go down when the power went down all over, and then the lines got contaminated with untreated water and its going to take days to get all these systems back up and running. Basically almost all of Texas has been completely shut down for the entire week. No power, no water, no businesses open, nothing. --- Tom Servo Reminds me of a couple of years ago, when the City Of Austin was subjected to abnormal rainfall and biblical floods. The city's water supply system flooded out and was out of commission for days while power and the treatment plants were cleaned and restored. There was a boiling water regime in place for awhile. I should know. I arrived at Bergstrom while that BS was happening. First stop was the men's room. When I reached for the sink's hot water, the guy next to me said "I wouldn't do that right now." They thought small, they never imagined the same problem could happen everywhere at the same time. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 18, 2021 09:57 PM (bxPTJ) 707

I remember when the Democrat mayor fled to Texas during Katrina. He caught some criticism, but the airlines didn't arrange for a lynch mob at the airport.
They didn't tell us when private citizen Kerry was flying to Paris to meet with Iranian nuke-builders. Or when the Bidens fly overseas to get their orders and paychecks. Corporate/State Incest is the very definition of Fascism. Posted by: The Gipper Lives at February 18, 2021 10:01 PM (Ndje9) Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at February 18, 2021 10:01 PM (1lKRm) 710

The both of you dream about the chance to run him out of the country, but the both of you would do nothing but whine, bitch and moan if David Dewhurst were our Senator instead, because he would have been about as worthless as Quitter Cornyn.
