In Texas weather news, Mr. TiFW's 90-year-old mother has been without electricity and water since yesterday; she lives in a very small town with nowhere to go to get warm. Her 67-year-old daughter lives with her, so she's not alone, but still we worry.
His brother's pipes burst a couple of days ago, and his other sister is without electricity since this morning. They both live in Kerrville.
Thankfully, we have not lost either electricity or water throughout this whole weather event. Then again, we are within mere blocks of 3 major hospitals and downtown, so we are "on the grid", so to speak.

All these tales of people running out of power and water nudged me into topping off the horse tank today and putting some water in the fridge just in case we lose power. Our utility is quite good. We have outages but they've always fixed them within a few hours.

But, I've got bourbon, which now. A toast to Rush's memory. GOD BLESS HIM, ALWAYS. A toast to you, Horde. I couldn't access the 'net so couldn't join, but I knew you were out here, a living thing. And a toast to Herself New Dawn. She suffered the cold bravely, but suffer she did. I'm thankful for a running furnace, at long last.

Power has been on since yesterday here in Brazoria County. No water at Schloss Hadrian because of the broken pipe in the attic. We have water from the faucet at the well head, along with a good amount of bottled water we always have on hand anyway. God only knows when someone can come out to fix the line.

He really liked the notion of it, but he also hated just how much prep it took to do a 25 minute show for TV. he was always at his best working through his stack of stuff in the far more immediate medium of radio.

the worst driving experience I ever endured was on I-40 in North Texas in 2004. Thick ice. Deep ruts in both lanes. Mostly trucks. When we got to Amarillo my nerves were clanging. I needed a drink, but we had to keep going. Fortunately west of Amarillo it got much better.
I've lived in the Rocky Mountain West most of my life. Never saw nuthin' like a Texas blue norther.

ERCOT allowed as much as 23% of Texas' electrical supply to be dependent on "wind". And the "max available KW" from wind, is in ideal conditions. When those turbine blades accumulate ice, they MUST stop turning, or they'll self-destruct from imbalance and unequal thrust from the three blades. Same way an airplane wing can't continue to generate lift when iced-up. IIRC, the Wind Binge started under Bush Jr., and picked up momentum under Perry. Abbott, though doing nothing to stop it, isn't to blame for the sad state of affairs, which greatly preceded his governance.
Under Obummer, I watched 'em dismantle three nearby mid-size power plants, all because of Evil Coal. Had those three plants remained in minimal operation, available to ramp-up "just in case", we wouldn't have had this debacle. Water systems still might've froze, but we'd have had the POWAH!

Well, all of the surrounding states were kinda using theirs this week!
We do have sanding trucks, but it really isn't cost-effective to have too many things like that around, as this extended type of weather event hasn't been seen in over 30 years in this area.

I'll deny it but that's why I'm not looking for a part time job right now in my semi retirement. I'm being paid 43k a year in unemployment. THE BIGGEST REASON Rush's TV show didn't catch on, is the various TV station and network Programming Managers would only put him on at 11 pm, 3 am, or 6:30 am (for examples) kind of time slots. They didn't deny him "airtime", but they did everything in their power to deny him an audience. To no avail, most folks VCRd the show and watched it later. But yeah, Rush was driven off the TV, a precursor to Trump being damned from every other platform out there.

Actually, you can buy small pellet mills, made in Chy-nah. You can pelletize grass clippings, too. But if you have a ready supply of wood, just get an efficient wood stove, and be happy. The pellet mill requires electricity to run, and a fair bit of it. Also time and effort on the part of the user. There are Ewetoobs of the process available.

I always saved up my scheckels and bought 2 tons in Sept., had them delivered on pallets, covered with tarps on the patio, where the bbq was in the summer. That year I did have to buy a few extra bags. I bought on a lay-a-way plan in may, had it installed in Sept. Had an elec. ignition. I got a converter I could string out the window to the Yukon if the power ever went out. Best investment I ever made.

My backyard is surrounded by a brick wall. Not a solid wall but staggered patterns of bricks with the back wall having an attached raised enclosure facing inward, 3'x3' and 2' tall which some previous home owner planted a bush. On the brick wall it's attached to there's a pipe that goes up.
I never thought much about it but someone here recently said that enclosure was for roasting oysters and if I dug out the bush I'd see a fire pit with a grate all attached to the pipe which is a chimney. He said people used to build those into their property.
Anyone ever heard of that for GA or SC coast?

to put some dates on things, Texas had several notable freezes in the 70's, culminating in a terrible shutdown in the winter of '79. Then, the winter of '83 - '84 was horribly cold, and there was an arctic blast in early '88, as I recall. Then 30 years of relatively nice weather, when the Leftists all said it was Proof of Global Warming!
While a lot of us have always said that their is a roughly 30 - 40 year sine wave function in temperatures that is rather obvious in the actual weather data, and we are right on schedule to hit a repeat of the weather from the late 40's through 80's, and this is in fact the harbinger of 30 - 40 years of colder and colder winters.

Seems that way. My one Amish neighbor owns a rather large plumbing, heating and cooling, electrical, and well business. A fleet of vans and any heavy duty construction vehicle you could imagine. They also have an adopted son and foster child so they can break the rules to meet state requirement. He just became a deacon of the Church last fall.

THE BIGGEST REASON Rush's TV show didn't catch on, is the various TV station and network Programming Managers would only put him on at 11 pm, 3 am, or 6:30 am (for examples) kind of time slots. They didn't deny him "airtime", but they did everything in their power to deny him an audience.

Yesterday I was doing some wiki searching on TX and nuke power; currently they have two sites, each with 2 reactors, providing about 11% of total baseload. But here's the thing --
They tried to add 2 more reactors to both sites, no bueno due to enormous (mostly federal) gubmint roadblocks, mounting costs, and the emphasis on wind/solar. Two other proposed sites also gave up for similar reasons.
But Abbott got a shiny award from the Wind Power Association just the other day, so TX has that going for them.

Yep - December, 1983. draw as shut down with ice, snow, and temps below freezing for over a week. Lost a lot of trees and other vegetation.
We were still in school, so we were far enough south to miss all of that.

I'm in Georgia, the Empire State of the South. There is a really good auction house near me, and I sell stuff there sometimes. You have to pay a commission, but you don't have to have a booth in a store or pay rent.
I also sell stuff on Face Book Marketplace or Craigslist.

Very much in the world with tech. They have a really amazing deli with all fresh food, the best quiche I've ever had , fresh breads and soups that are incredible. Chorizo corn chowder today. The owner of that also has the best car repair place in town. They'll work on anything and do a great job for an honest price. They do lots of construction, electric and plumbing.
Warmest people on earth. The women wear long dresses and hair covering. No jewelry. They laugh a lot, with or at me, is a toss up.
Pacifists which is okay by me. Lots of farmers, ranchers. I've never inquired about joining. I doubt I'd be good at it in any event. Too old and too bad a temper.

I'm going to make a wild ass guess. Citibank owed the money and intended to make just an interest payment but overpaid, so the overpayment was credited against the principal owed. If I make an overpayment on my home mortgage and they credit the overpayment against principal, then I can't call the mortgage company and say I want my overpayment back. I'm guessing the same thing is what happened here.

I'm not sad, as much as grateful for having been given such a great source of information and joy, for so many years. I'm glad he'll be spared what's coming, 1930s Germany-style, for people like us. And I'm not happy, either.
Nor am I angry, when I read the gleeful ghouls expressing their facsimile of joy (it is not true Joy at all) and saying things like "today, the world is a better, kinder, less hateful place".
I should be a bit of all of these things. But I'm just numb. I haven't cried once since I quit drinking over two years ago. Haven't gotten really angry, or felt real joy, either. Just more numb with each disappointment, each loss, each promise of good things to come dashed against the rocks and sunk.

That one wasn't a total crock of shit, though. There really was a problem, and around 1990 or so it became worrisome that no one seemed to be taking it seriously.
However, by around 1998 I personally had a good confidence level that it had been fixed in everything that mattered, and that any remaining problems would be on the order of "The timer on my 1982 VCR doesn't work any more" rather than "civilization collapses".

My man Taqui, we are pretty close in age and lifestyle (sort of) then. I am nearly 2 years older than you, and I too first listened to Rush back in the mid-Nineties when I was younger, and none of my friends gave a damn about politics and that kind of stuff. We were all having too good a time, and Rush to my liberal degree liberal lockstep ears sounded harsh, callous, and out of touch. Then things changed, I got an adult's perspective on the world, and Rush began to sound smarter by the day. It also helped that the Clintonistas seemed determined to prove him right. Then 9/11 happened and he was the prophetic voice of God warning us of what might happen. Trusted him always after that.

I know a couple of good churches, but you'd have to come to Ohio to attend them. Picking a good church is like picking a good grocery store. You gotta shop around, compare services, see what the crowd is like, and so forth. And if they have a good choir. But the Church is not the same as the Word. The Church has let me down before, and vice versa, but the Word endures and remains true. And I know what you mean about AOSHQ here; even when I'm just checking in, it's always been fun.

they have been around for years and years... guess they are just naow piercing the Orange Curtain. my problem with commercial bakeries is that soy may of them use soy ingredients. hell, one of the reason's i ordered a year plus supply of chorizo is that the local commercial brands now use soy four grits to expand their product. the other upside is that this brand uses pork shoulder, and not the lymph nodes, salivary glands and cheek fat that is traditional.

Having said that? Good grief, we're so different. She's extremely risk-averse, I've only grown more attracted to risk as I get older. She pinches every penny; I spend every penny. She's very into old-fashioned entertainment; I like to explore cinema. She can't handle anything adventurous to eat at all; I love spicy food and have been trying new things all my life but especially recently.

I think it was Reagan who repealed the 'Fairness Doctrine' which dictated that news needed to be impartial. This opened up the door for Rush to express his point of view without giving 'equal time' to an opposing side.

He told a lengthy story about this once. For awhile (1990) thereabouts, you'd hear different songs played for the opening theme. That's because of the dispute between EIB and The Pretenders. Eventually, though, what broke the impasse was Chrissy Hynde herself in an interview. In said interview, she said her parents loved the show and she didn't mind his use of the song. His crew got hold of it and showed that to the legal team representing The Pretenders. At which point they hammered out an agreement letting them use the song as a theme song for the show.
Note: every August 1 I wake up to it, for that is the anniversary of the Rush Limbaugh program going nationwide in 1988, and whenever I visit OH, it MUST play at least once.

At some point, the commercials became too much to listen to any radio. I liked having it on as background. But with a talk show, there is a certain ebb and flow. To get a discussion going, to have an in depth conversation, requires time. And "we'll be right back!" every five minutes (seemingly) is nuts. And the commercials are so bad.

Remember those little white rubber o-rings on a freshly shopped pinball machine? They turned black with use. My dad owned his own amusement business and his 6 kids were his staff. He'd bring in a pinball machine to be cleaned and we had to scour the thing top to bottom (after he'd removed that scary non-safety glass) sheet of glass cover.
I can remember clearly those large bowls of black rubber rings that I had to scour with brillo one by one until they were spotless, and until my fingers were raw. He was a stickler for perfection, too.
/and I won't get started about scrubbing the white walls of the tires on his business truck ....again, to perfection.
I started about 12 years old and he'd pay me $5 a week for working in the backyard shop every day after school and on weekends doing whatever he needed. I also learned how to recover pool tables and rails. It was a great childhood. Yep, old as dirt here too.

Good memory though. One thing I have noticed is that a lot of things do not get repaired/refurbished anymore- people just buy new ones. Odd thing in a society that mouths piety about 'renewable/sustainable.'
I do it too. I have a Roomba I bought about 5 years ago now. Ajax sheds an insane amount and it is kind of a necessity or else I would be vacuuming 24/7. I have noticed that the collection bin has not been filling up, but the brushes are picking up material. I am guessing it is loosing vacuum because either the rubber seals are worn out or the vacuum motor is starting to go. Went online- cannot find the rubber seals, but can by the two connected parts with the seals for about the same as the cost of a whole new vacuum. What the hell kind of sense does that make?

He's 85 and still going strong. When his brother died at 69 of a heart attack he changed his diet overnight, instantly. No more Popeyes chicken or fast food, no fried foods, no sugar, no bread. He decided he wanted to live. Now he eats primarily fruits, veggies, fish, and nuts. Nothing else. He's outlived everyone in his immediate family and is healthy as a horse.
He gets up every day, gets dressed in his dress slacks and boots, and heads to the post office to check his mail then makes the rounds of his rental properties just to make everything is ok. Sharp as a tack ...and I am so fortunate to have him as a role model.
/and he loved Rush Limbaugh too.

To me it kind of seems like a symptom of how we do not have a real fair market. Government offers subsidies for a thing. Businesses who in their best interests would not normally indulge in a risky or senseless product go ahead and go for it in order to be able to get those government subsidies (cash.) The inherent problems associated with the thing get exposed by an unnatural occurrence. People blame the 'Free' market, letting the businesses doing stupid shit off the hook.
The sad part is: this happened where this level of cold is really a freak occurrence. The insanity is them doing this in say California, where hot summers and wild fires are the NORM.

I was thinking about a proof of concept idea of trying to find some of that foam rubber single sided tape (weather stripping.) Not too thick. Install on one side or the other and that would also serve the function of bringing the parts closer together for the seal fit, especially if the locking up mechanism has gotten a bit loose.

Because all the ones here are busy rebuilding the hundreds and hundreds of damaged homes in the area. We're on the list. He figures he'll get around to us by April...maybe. But you're cold. My guess? (fly) has ALWAYS been an asshole, even before his misfortune, and if he wasn't, people would rally to his cause, and he wouldn't be in an RV on his property right now.
But, since he is an asshole, he alienates all around him, and can't begin to figure out the problem isn't life's circumstances; the problem is him.
I'm in TX, and I do not require, or even want, (fly)'s sympathy. As someone else put it, I'd be more sympathetic to him if he wasn't an asshole. (Not to mention that it IS cold here. But I got heaters and am otherwise doing fine under the circumstances.)

The dry snow is not bad. The slush, it is amazing how much and how easily those tires will spin. My left calf is the only part of me sore after chiseling the car out yesterday from working the clutch.
On the tire side, I am betting a new set of real tires would make a world of difference (seems like there is enough room where they have the pump in the trunk to fit a spare.)

I imagine that a lot of the Lefties demanding $15 have never worked a sh#tty entry level job. They went from college application-enhancing activities (sports, activism, volunteering where they weren;t near the targeted needy) in HS, then internships and more activism/volunteering that was all about "raising awarenes" to grad school to a nice office job.
They don't know what ot's like to work at McDonalds, they don;t understand that for most, this is a formative work experience that motivates one to move up, etc. They think people should live on an entry-level job's wages because they skipped that whole "entry-level" stage in their career.

What's funny in the need for many in America to worship small business (because "big" is inherently evil and "small" is inherently good) is that many MickeyDs are in fact small businesses. I've known people who are in the business and they can own 5 or so MickeyDs. Small operations, but plugged into a much larger company to be sure. So you CAN go to a MickeyDs and support a small business owner.
Anyways, even in MickeyDs that I have been to as diverse as ones in NYC, Junction, TX or Warren, OH, you can see more and more automation. The MickeyDs of the future (and more and more places) will become more automated. Another example: to pick up extra money I night stock. Hopefully it will be relegated to a minor role again soon, but anyways, the grocery store recently added two self checkout lanes where once there were none. Why is that?

Alas, people WANT those jobs to BE lost. If they didn't, the conditions would be set so that someone could be a cashier part-time and could work there picking up a little extra money they might not otherwise have.
But people demand the police give people a raise (via minimum wage laws), and demand that it be more expensive for businesses to operate via higher property taxes and so on. I've had a sinus thing, moving into my ears for the last couple days. I'm not worried about Covid simply because I can still smell and taste. The lungs have felt kinda shitty for weeks because I'm required to wear a mask too damn much.
