AS I PASS through my incarnationsYou might remember that Bill Whittle re-worked that poem for modern ears. But I think that Kipling's version has added modern meaning just lately, particularly with the massive influence of the princes of social media. I like to keep both versions in mind. Whittle's video is below the fold. His re-write starts:

Oh, well. Might as well try to get into the spirit of things. From the Newspaper of Record -- Man asks that you respect his preferred adjectives:
"Here are the adjectives I identify with," Becker put on social media. "'Cool, witty, handsome, innovative, fun.' Please use one of these adjectives when describing me." "It distresses me when people use adjectives I don't identify as," Becker later explained. "Like 'creepy,' 'weird,' or 'off-putting.' That's basically denying my existence and trying to genocide me." Many would call that statement 'nutty,' but that is not from Becker's list of approved adjectives.I would not have remembered Bill Whittle's video if Bird Dog at Maggie's Farm had not linked a short post on Kipling's poem, The Gods of the Copybook Headings.
The "copybook headings" featured in the title refer to the short maxims once regularly copied by schoolchildren in America and Great Britain, not only for penmanship practice, but also for the wisdom they confer in short, snappy soundbites. These maxims are often considered quaint, old-fashioned, and "utterly out of touch." Kipling implies their truths are unattractive to those enamored with society's latest fads:I'm not sure I think of Kipling's poem as entirely "humorous". But the author of the post on the poem is correct about one thing: kids today do not have much opportunity to have wisdom drilled into their young minds. Not when a request to "show your work" in math is racist and Bill and Melinda Gates are backing an anti-racist math program. Got any ideas on how to help kids get around these impediments to learning wisdom? Here is Bill Whittle's version of the poem. Kipling wrote 'Recessional' on the occasion of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Although Kipling is often viewed as a flag-waver for imperialism, his views were more complex than such a view suggests, and this political poem goes against the celebratory mood of the Jubilee, reminding readers that the British Empire is trivial and transient in the face of the permanence of God:For heathen heart that puts her trust In reeking tube and iron shard, All valiant dust that builds on dust, And guarding, calls not Thee to guard, For frantic boast and foolish word-- Thy mercy on Thy People, Lord!

I'm going to be a sucker of carbonated drinks until the day I die. It just makes absolutely no sense to me why one needs them to have sugar.
I know the early diet sodas tasted like ass, but I have bought store brand sodas that are basically indistinguishable from Coke Zero or Diet Dr. Pepper. And these days it's the Soda Stream machine and Ralph's diet soda syrups. Of which there are a bazillion varieties.

Back in the day, Whittle used to drop a major essay every six or eight months & they were all outstanding. The entire blogosphere would light up with the raging fires of debate for weeks.
Now he does the videos and it's just not the same. I get it, most people would rather watch a ten minute video than read a 20,000 word essay that would take an entire weekend to digest. The videos should get wider attention than the written word.

Exercise has a whole bunch of benefits, it's crucial to health. Weight loss is not one of them, very generally speaking. Once you pencil out what kind of exercise is necessary to burn calories, it's an epiphany of sorts. A single tablespoon of peanut butter is 90 calories. I've lost 60 pounds with calorie reduction.

Aside from that, supplement with lots from history. I don't recall if I mentioned it here, but there is a PBS cartoon, Liberty's Kids, which goes from the Declaration of Independence to the Constitutional Convention. It is from PBS, but it is from 2000, era, before ultra-woke made things completely unwatchable, at least from what I have seen so far.

Yep, I drink a soda with real sweetener in it maybe once every few years or hardly ever. But there comes a time when your body starts treating the 0cal drinks like the real stuff and makes you feel like crap too. Headaches and blood pressure spikes. 29+ a fewish mumblety decades and your body starts treating anything sweet like you were freebasing corn syrup.
My body cuts me no slack and artificial sweeteners are mostly out for me. Agave nectar in small amounts is about the only sweetener I can handle now. Sweet fruit that have a lot of fiber like apples work ok too.

I recall someone mentioning that recently, so that's good. Probably need to look into Ralphs. Their website recently got revamped, so the parent company, Warren Corporation, put their stamp all over it. It looks... sinister. Reminds me of art deco/Brave New World. But the site itself, and the other stuff they sell, looks like they might be decent folk. They sell flavored pickles! Which is weird, but nobody who sells flavored pickles can be all bad, can they?

I've noticed that medical people - doctors - people who know, people who see fat fucks clinically on a daily basis year in and year out, tend towards being very thin. Exercise can help one get there, that's true. But it is caloric reduction that does most of it, that's all I'm saying.

Excellent point. China in particular, has been at this for decades, sending folks over here on neverending student permits, then work permits, then after however many years, they apply for citizenship.
I'm sure a percentage of them just assimilate, but whatever small number there are, and not just China, but Arabs and Iranians and any number of others, who come from countries that despise the U.S., they are essentially multi-generational spies.

I am going to have a shot at it today, using an electric random-orbit sander, hooked up to a vacuum cleaner. Tried the sander on Thursday, and it was very fast, but the paper in it was too aggressive, and the dust it raised was epic. I have finer paper on hand now, and will rig a vacuum to it.

We did that years ago, and just recently discovered a service called Locast that picks up local broadcast signals and then, via their app, streams them over the internet. They are a .org and ask you to pay what you think it is worth, minimum donation is $5.50 per month I think. Lots of channels showing old movies and TV shows, in addition to the regular network stuff. Currently they serve around 25 markets, but they have been adding markets lately.
