The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"It’s certainly on-brand for criminal-coddling Democrats, but the rest of America will find it disturbing that a murderous gang member is holding a prominent position with the DCCC." NY State GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy

*

Quote II

“Let me say that again: 60% of our emissions that need to be reduced come from you, the person on your street, the senior on fixed-income. Right now, there is no bad guy left, at least in Massachusetts, to point the finger at and turn the screws on and now break their will, so they stop emitting. That’s you. We have to break your will.” David Ismay, Massachusetts, undersecretary for climate change

*

Quote III

I hope you have all mastered the official Socialist jargon which our masters, as they call themselves, wish us to learn. You must not use the word “poor”; they are described as the “lower income group.” When it comes to a question of freezing a workman’s wages the Chancellor of the Exchequer speaks of “arresting increases in personal income.” The idea is that formerly income taxpayers used to be the well-to-do, and that therefore it will be popular and safe to hit at them. Sir Stafford Cripps does not like to mention the word “wages,” but that is what he means. There is a lovely one about houses and homes. They are in future to be called “accommodation units.” I don’t know how we are to sing our old song “Home Sweet Home.” “Accommodation Unit, Sweet Accommodation Unit, there’s no place like our Accommodation Unit.” I hope to live to see the British democracy spit all this rubbish from their lips. W. S. Churchill, 1950, 8 February, Cardiff
(H/T Isophorone Blog)

Quote IV

I mean, I’m sorry. I’m really — I’m honestly not trying to evade your question, but I’m not really sure of all the details of that, and I think if I make a statement, it probably could either be incorrect or taken out of context. So, I prefer not to comment on that.” Dr. Anthony Fauci

*

Quote V

“I absolutely believe in the marrow of my bones that he will be our nominee in 2024. He will come back to us. We will have a sweeping victory in 2022. And he’ll lead us in 2024.” Steve Bannon

*

Quote VI

Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack, and if Republican Senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again. He will never do what needs to be done, or what is right for our Country. President Donald J. Trump

Man Phones Police to Confess to Fake Murder in Hopes of Having Road Cleared of Snow

After having the road to his home blocked by heavy snowfalls, a Ukrainian man decided to call police and confess to a fictitious murder, in hopes that they would clear the road in order to reach him.

According to police sources, on Saturday, February 13 an unnamed man from the village of Grybova Rudnya, in Ukraine’s Chernihiv region, phoned the national emergency number and confessed to a gruesome murder. He said that he and his stepfather had gotten into an argument, and he had ended up stabbing the elderly man repeatedly in the chest with a knife. The victim had collapsed, and was not breathing. The self-confessed attacker added that he was willing to turn himself in, if police could reach his home.

Will this Electric Vehicle take off?
Just ask Mr. Nancy Pelosi and all of the insider traders of the swamp.

TheThe Chevy Bolt is undergoing a growth spurt. General Motors unveiled two new versions of the Bolt on Sunday: an updated Bolt EV hostaback with longer range and new high-tech features, and the brand new Bolt EUV — essentially a compact SUV — with more legroom room and less range than the Bolt EV.

Due out this summer, the refreshed Bolt EV will sell for $31,995 — or about $5,000 less than the current model year Bolt EV. The Bolt EUV (which stands for “electric utility vehicle” will also be less expensive, costing $33,995. A limited-edition “Launch” version, with unique wheels, special badging, and an illuminated charge port, will be available for $43,495. The Bolt EV and EUV were expected to go into production at the end of 2020 but were delayed until this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Yes, yes. The news since November 3rd has been depressing. Here's an early Feel Good Story of The Day.

At least 30 Taliban militants have died in Afghanistan after they blew themselves up during a bomb-making class.

The Khaama Press News Agency said the fighters died when Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) they were learning to construct exploded inside a mosque, quoting a release from the Afghan Army's 209th Shaheen Corps.

The blast happened on Saturday morning at a mosque in the village of Qultaq in the Dowlatabad district of Balkh province.

The fighters included six foreign nationals.

We covered this "Genius Award Winner" last week in The Quotes of The Day. Woman who sprayed hair with Gorilla Glue debuts new look after surgery

Tessica Brown tangled herself into a sticky situation after styling her hair with Gorilla Glue

The right haircut can change your life.

Tessica Brown’s tresses are finally free, after previously styling her hair with Gorilla Glue and tangling herself into a sticky situation when the product wouldn’t budge. The Louisiana woman went viral on social media for documenting her struggles to remove it, but only found relief following a successful procedure with a plastic surgeon in Los Angeles.

Now Brown — probably feeling brand-new — has debuted a sleek new look to start fresh. On Sunday, the 40-year-old visited a local barbershop in her home state for a trim and style, TMZ reports. The makeover at Below Zero in Violet was said to be free of charge, as the professionals empathized with her now-viral plight

I still don't know how you spray that product in your hair.

FISKING THE WAPO EDITOR WHO IS SAD HE DOESN’T GET TO ACT LIKE THE MAFIA ANYMORE

Sorry. My title is misleading. The mafia has more honor and dignity than the American news media.

Darn it. I have a book deadline. I should be working on that instead. Only Mike sent me this article last night telling me that it was so goofy I’d have to fisk it. And damn it, he was right. This is one of the most pretentious articles I’ve ever read. I’m actually in awe of what a piece of shit this guy is. As usual the original is in italics and my response is in bold.

Washington Post public editor: the powerful have realized they don’t need the Post

Correction. Nobody needs the Post.

By Hamilton Nolan

OCTOBER 20, 2020

I’m actually bummed I missed this back in October, but at the time I was too busy writing about things like Crackhead McStripperbang (aka Hunter Biden) being a complete piece of shit taking massive bribes from Communist China, because illustrious news publications like the Washington Post weren’t covering that story for baffling and inexplicable reasons.

The following falls into the category of The ONT Is Always Looking Out For You. TM What is a nap for $500 Mis. Hum!

Working from home? If so, you’d be forgiven for suffering the occasional productivity slump. While remote working comes with many benefits, from flexibility to improved work-life balance, being in your home environment can be distracting and uninspiring.

If you can relate to this, it’s time for you to harness your lunch hour. Many skip their lunch break to counteract any time lost to lapses in motivation, but by doing this, your productivity is likely to suffer more later in the day. Here are a few things you can do at lunchtime to leave you feeling recharged.

This sounds delicious. I would give it a try. Hint, hint Fabulous Mrs. Mis. Hum Washington Pie, actually a cake, but what the hell.

IN 1895, WASHINGTON PIE WAS such a popular recipe that it was also a metaphor. Leading up to Independence Day festivities in Grand Rapids, Michigan, an article in The Michigan Tradesman used the dessert to explain a way to keep the town’s raucous paraders in line, suggesting that they make, “a sort of Washington Pie with that part of the procession—a layer, say, of traveling men and then a filling of Salvation Army jam, and so on, with the brass band by way of frosting.”

Washington Pie (Pie Crust Version)
For the crust:
4 prepared pie crusts (You’ll need this much dough to fully line a standard loaf pan.)

For the filling:
½ 8-inch layer cake, cut into cubes
¼ cup raisins
¼ cup chopped walnuts or pecans
3 eggs
2 cups milk
Zest of one orange
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground ginger
¼ cup sugar

1. Preheat the oven to 375° F. Line a standard 8 ½-inch by 4 ½-inch loaf pan with pie crust and chill in the refrigerator while you prepare the filling.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cake cubes, raisins, and chopped nuts.

3. In a smaller bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, orange zest, cinnamon, ginger, and sugar. Pour over the cake cube mixture and soak for 10 minutes.

4. Fill the pie crust with the soaked cake cubes and remaining custard, then top with an additional layer of pie crust and crimp the edges. Make four to six diagonal slashes in the top crust.

5. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the filling is set but still has a bit of a wobble. Cool in the loaf pan, then turn out and cut into slices.

Milton Friedman said it was because all the men were off at war, and the English / Dutch women that lived here were worried about not only their men, but about the scary Irish and Italians who like to drink, and decided that they should just make booze illegal. Then the men came home and said "nah."

The years and math don't exactly add up, as far as I am concerned, but it makes for a fun narrative.

Yes. This is true. The problem is - for everyone - that they're shutting down every reliable source of energy as fast as they can. We are going to have rolling brown-outs and black-outs. They can't control who those hit. This has been going on for years. It's just now getting ready to hit.

Maybe they'll control who can get gas. Because gas is king when we're all running generators.

The government hadn't yet turned into an income racket, so they didn't have the same incentives we do now. But you'll recognize the logic here....
Bad things happen when some people drink. We can't just make the people who abuse alcohol stop so...we'll make everyone stop. Just like that! And then no one will drink again.

Cigarettes would have been banned under the same logic...but now there is too much money at stake.

Some young guy was stuck against the curb on ice around the corner from me today, he was spinning his tires so loudly I just had to go out and look. His theory for driving on ice was that if he just pushed the gas harder, it would work.

his girlfriend in the car had trusted him to know how to drive and not be an idiot. Someone else finally walked over to him and showed him what to do.

I got out and drove around a bit today. I don't drive on snow and ice very often, but I know how to do it when I have to. about 2 inches of hard packed snow and ice still on every road surface here.

2. Got stuck in the drive w/ the crap the snow plow tossed up because just as I was pulling out a car went by and had to stop, so got stuck and missed the Dr appt. Spent a long time shoveling to get out. Went to get more salt to add to the weight in the back of the Mustang.

3. Dealt w/ BS on my car accident paperwork and IMRF disability.
4. Checking our acct and we're over $2800 withdrawn. The bank just double billed our payment to Discover. Now have to call the bank tomorrow. Before I have to drive to Rockford w/ a probably chance of snow for another Dr appt.

My life sucks, can you top this?

312 Steve Bannon makes a good point about not starting a third party and why. It wastes billions, splits the vote against the Democrats and lets them win.
But his solution is actually quite simple. MAGA supporters need to become Precinct Captain members. IIRC, something like 200,000 R spots were not even filled in 2020. These are the people who make the decisions for the party at the local level. The Country clubbers and RINOs win be default.
Find MAGA people to fill those spots, and Trump absolutely controls the Repub party, and the cocksuckers like Mitch, Snow Blower, and Mittens get their country club and Chamber of Commerce support knocked out from under them.
MAGA people have to be willing to put in the time.
At Warroom, there is a video with a checklist how to do it.

Anyone here ever have *raisins* in their chicken pot pie?! It sounds to me like an even greater culinary sin than carrots in chili.

378 Walking into the grocery store one day, my 5-year-old (at the time) was slightly autistic and didn't quite know how to talk to people. A lady was giving out samples of some kind of snack food. Not knowing that he should just take it and move along, he took one and stood there eating it in silence. Ate it, still didn't know to move along, she gave him another, and he repeated the sequence.

His legislation, voting record, and committee actions are just a tad more important than what he says in interviews, would you not agree? A lot of republicans build a brand of tough talk and no action (eg Graham, election year McCain, "Cocaine" Mitch).

Plus seem to recall he's made more than a couple boneheaded statements already. That doesn't bode at that well, imo.

Lost power 2x in the last 10 years due to nearby tornados, and while the summer nights weren't pleasant I've done without AC before and it is survivable. Only lost water when a nearby water main broke (which has also happened a few times, as well as a number of times further on the road signaling that may be an issue the city might want to look at).

Too much to hope it'll have any impact on the country - far, far too dumbed down, and dumber every year (another high school class graduates, after marinating in crap for years). Even Trump was unwilling to confront the idiocy the way it needs to be done, directly and on the substance - we left the Paris Accord because it was a "bad deal" - not because it was an absurdity entirely based on a very dubious hypothesis that lacks support in real science or the geologic record.

Posted by: Quint at February 16, 2021 10:21 PM (gkHkW)

Um, you clearly don't live in TX. Yeah, Houston has no zoning. But believe me, all the other major cities do. And in Austin, the city government will slow-walk permits if you aren't doing things their way.
It's not really a miracle as to why the state is still red. It's always been a 5% margin Republican state and the north and west keep it that way for the most part. One thing that has TX Dems terrified are the inroads made by Mr. Trump into the RGV. If that becomes red, that's even more of a counterbalance to the cities.

The Washington State Department of Commerce (WADOC) hand-selected non-profits to aid in COVID-19 relief through federal funding, selecting only those with radical political agendas. Washington State's Equity Relief Fund awarded nearly $12 million to 358 non-profits statewide.
In a news release, the WADOC stated they teamed up with Philanthropy Northwest to provide $11.85 million in grants from the Washington Equity Relief Fund for Nonprofits. The organizations they selected are all led by Black Indigenous People of Color and only serve BIPOC communities.
"It is imperative that we step up to support these trusted and much-needed organizations operated by and serving BIPOC communities. It is equally important that these communities lead the decision-making on how to prioritize these funds," said Commerce Director Lisa Brown.
Nearly 1,000 non-profits applied for grants and the relief fund only awarded 358 non-profits, leaving 642 organizations without aid.
No white-led non-profit organizations were selected to receive federal funds through the Washington Equity Relief Fund.

Horrible, corny cheese-filled script. Terrible acting. Sound of weapons was completely off. Hostage situations that resolved in impossible ways. Protagonists moving at half speed during emergencies.

One of the worst movies I've seen in years.

435 Well, I got a good slice of mudding and taping the ceiling in my front room today. I made simple tools that permit both chores to be done from floor level, without me climbing up a ladder. For taping, I welded a barrel-shaped caster wheel, off an old bed frame, to a piece of pipe. I wrapped a little masking tape, sticky side out, around the shank of the tool near the head, to hold the drywall tape (the adhesive-coated fiber tape) on the wheel until the rolling is begun. Since it's a little hard to start the tape exactly parallel to the joint, I found applying the tape in two-foot increments was optimum. Once rolled out, that stuff sticks fine, too.

For mudding, I just fastened a plastic Bondo spreader to a length of 1X2. Not ideal, but no ladder!

the blackouts to try and conserve energy as much of the nation is

446 435 Well, I got a good slice of mudding and taping the ceiling in my front room today.

483 Oh... did rainmandodo mention Enron? No mention of arch-Dem as advisor? Hmm, curious omission. And then:

the Clinton administration did far more for Enron in exchange for the money. For example, Enron got government loans and guarantees for the Dabhol Power plant in India to the tune of six hundred million dollars from the U.S. Export-Import Bank and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation. And the Clinton administration threatened to cut off foreign aid to Mozambique if it didn’t sign a pipeline deal with Enron.

While the Democrats have been eager to investigate Enron, there has been no interest on their part to hear from former Clinton Treasury secretary, Robert Rubin. Rubin has been the Chairman of Citigroup since 1999. Citigroup is a major creditor of Enron, with loans outstanding of an estimated billion dollars. Evidence was revealed in recent hearings that senior officers at Citigroup, according to the New York Times, “misrepresented the full nature of a transaction with Enron…so that the energy company could ignore accounting requirements and hide its true financial condition…”

520 Market-Ticker says some of the NG problems down there in Texas are because - natural gas is a "just in time" inventory product. Whether a peak load generating plant, or a GM assembly plant, or whatever.

NG is pumped through pipelines. Ordinarily this is done by natural gas powered pumps. They scavenge a bit of NG from the pipeline. So long as there is natural gas in the pipeline, it can be pumped.

This wasn't "green" enough. Somebody decided to switch to electrically powered natural gas pipeline pumps.

No electricity, no worky.

I've no idea how accurate his assessment is on this, but it would explain some of the "equipment failure" they talk about. They have a lot of plates to keep in the air at once, without reserve capacity, without redundancy and resiliency it becomes a cascading series of failures.

And a whole shitload of really pissed off Texans and Oklahomans.

541 I'd think car batteries of the correct group size and CCA would be getting tight in supply down there in Texas about now too. Just a guess. A good cold snap will expose a weak battery PDQ.

547 No, they won't "get it", because they are immune to facts, logic, and reason.

Watch for them to blame fossil fuels. The "aging" fossil fuel grid system, I expect.

They shut down a bunch of coal fired plants. No new nuke plants in over 40 years.

"Renewables" are expensive. To keep the cost of electricity down to less than torches and pitchforks mob level, they cut everything else to the bone. No margin for error, no redundancies or adequate backup.

Natural gas gets delivered fine in Saskatoon, Minot, Billings, etc. Gets cold there too. So what happened with that?

555 It's amazing how we only later discover how everything was dismantled when we weren't paying attention.

It looks like electrically operated natural gas pipeline pumps are a "thing", even nationally. Historically, they used natural gas fired pumps.

559 Here's a twat from an idiot aka Exhibit A, weapons grade industrial stupid, making the point mentioned earlier.

"Wow ... its like we need a different energy source back up system. I wish we could harness the energy of the sun. Wouldnt that be amazing! Oooo wait... thats right Trump killed solar and green energy options."

It was the "solar and green energy options" that are the proximate cause of this. They removed reliable and cost effective energy solutions because they work. As Tom Sowell pointed out, liberals always want to replace what works with what sounds good.

Good intentions are the only thing that matters. Millions freezing in the dark, well, that's not my problem. Then they point fingers at somebody else. And based on a faulty premise. Coal is good stuff. America has 500 years worth in the ground. We're sort of like the Saudi Arabia of coal. Domestic energy. Inexpensive. Reliable. Good paying jobs, good CAREERS. And keeps it in house.

Meh, - destroying infrastructure with national security implications. it's a living. Pays the bills.

Sure smells like it, don't it?

They haven't been shy about vocalizing their hatreds, and in recent years have ramped up their public pronouncements considerably. They've basically criminalized about 70% of the population. You are a terrorist, and the full weight of every agency will be brought to bear on you. The "news" media demands it daily, if you've a mind to watch, though I recommend you don't. Cold and rainy down here by NASA. Water is very low pressure. Supposed to be another cold snap tomorrow but no more ice. Right across county Galveston cty about 70% of customers have no power.

629 No loss of Elec here but we are on the grid that feed NASA. We have lost water as Pasadena (our water source) cannot keep water tower filled do to electric down time.

The downtown areas are doing fine, have been lit up like Christmas and Mardi Gras as a friendly "Fuck You" to the dark surrounding neighborhoods.

I like the excuses of the "leadership": We have hospitals, CoViD patients, critical government functions and "warming centers" that are critical to keep running.

So basically, their downtown hospitals, unlike all other hospitals, don't have backup generators, and their homeless are guaranteed heat, electricity and water at the expense of the taxpayers shivering in the dark.

And, of course, the gratuitous "CoViD" reference to add a special sacred element to the whole thing. Because there is no CoViD anywhere else but in the well deserving Central Business District.

630 The entire thing. Now, we DO know that in all likelihood the initial blast was survived because the last transmission a second or two later was "Uh-oh". But beyond that? An explosion, then followed by coming down from that height, and being that high up? Forgive me, but I find that extremely difficult to believe. Nearly impossible, in fact.
Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at February 17, 2021 03:00 AM (49Dnm)

not necessarily. The two he named were found with their helmets on, indicating they not only survived the blast but also activated their pressure suits, allowing them to survive the decompression. I had some time ago that there was a transcript put together, but it was deemed "not in the public interest" or something so it wasn't released to the public for 20 years or something.

Remember, Chuck Yeager survived a free fall from 100,000 feet. Happier ending, of course.

635 Green energy may be unreliable but at least it's expensive.

It's a good thing we have all this excess capacity for our soon to be mandatory electric cars.

Also, thank goodness California has shown us the amazing efficiency of government infrastructure projects with it's wildly successful high speed rail project.

637 1. Texas has seen a growth of 20,000 megawatts of wind and solar over the same period to 34,000 megawatts of installed capacity (they rarely perform anywhere close to capacity).
2. Wind and solar are heavily subsidized (Taxes, cheap bonds, etc) at about a 50% difference from thermal based plants.
3. Wind and solar a free to use the grid without having to provide any reliability. They are the baby daddy that likes to fuck but never has child support.

641 A short, simple explanation as to why Texas went in for wind power: First, let's just point out that there was never any need for it, it was a Corporate Fashion Accessory.

then, factor in that Texas has a lot of competing energy companies, and that the Feds offered very lucrative subsidies to anyone who would build wind power, without any regard as to its viability. (It was Holy, so could not be questioned) Lots of empty land in West Texas where no one would complain about uglifying the landscape with these behemoths. It made all the dems extremely happy, and if made all the GOP-e grifters even more happy, since they had a hand in the permitting payoffs, the construction payoffs, the subsidy payoffs. When the public asked "why, though?" they would show all the great Supply numbers and give a speech about Energy Diversity and if you weren't impressed by that, or tried to question it, then you were some kind of troglodyte.

It was guaranteed to make a fortune for everyone! And suddenly, this week, their Titanic hit an iceberg blown down from the north.
