Gun Thread: Happy Valentine's Day Edition! [Weasel]

valentine ammo scaled.jpg

Well Howdy and Happy Valentine's Day, y'all! It's both Sunday, and Valentine's Day, and we all know what that means! Happy Valentine's Day Edition Gun Thread! I bought WeaselWoman some candy, which I promptly opened and ate most of, and also got the doggos and kitty some treats which I did not open and eat, in a rare display of personal restraint. It's a rainy, icy weekend here in the Mid-Atlantic, so no farm this weekend. I haven't been down there in weeks, mostly owing to my work schedule, but that has calmed down and I really need to check on things and to do some shooting. I have been wanting to do a .22 rifle video for a while, so that's next on the list.

So what, you may ask, does a Valentine's Day Gun Thread entail? Great question! We haven't had one before, according to the Gun Thread Archives, so I really have no idea.

Let's find out together down below, shall we?

We've been talking lately about bringing old and neglected guns back from the dead, and our pal DB Cooper starts things off with a teriffic rescue story.

A friend of mine brought me this 1911 with the story that he found it in the sleeper of a burned-out Peterbuilt when he was 6 years old. It was his toy gangster gun throughout his childhood. It had one round in the mag and had cooked off and buldged the frame. I threw it in a bucket of Kroil for about 2 weeks and beat the snot out of it with a mallet till things started moving. After I got it dissassembled I re-set the frame rail dimensions in a vise and jig. Worked all the crud off the rails by cycling it with valve grinding compound. I installed new parts and springs I had in stock and a set of Esmerelda Cocobolo grips I had. For the first test fire, I put on a heavy glove and aimed it around the corner of my heavy steel dump truck bed while I looked the other way. Success!

Had to do some polishing on the feed ramp and a trigger job and functioned perfect. I was somewhat concerned with loss of heat treat so I put 200 rounds thru it and re-measured everything. It was in-spec and no visible issues. It's pretty accurate too. I gave it back to my friend who was totally surprised. He didn't know I was working on it. It's kind of a funky back from the dead Rat-Rod gun.

Very nicely done, DB Cooper!! Thank you for sending this in!

I'm not a hunter and never have been, but I don't have anything against those who do hunt, it's just not my thing. I know it's something that countless gun owners do enjoy, and in some cases rely on to at least help put food on the table, so as long as it's done responsibly, hunters and hunting are A-OK with Weasel. I mention this because I recently received an email from our pal and delightful 'ette Sharon (One of the Quiet Ones) who while mostly a lurker on the Gun Thread, brings up a good point on the use of lead bullets or shot while hunting, and the effect it has on the food chain.

I received an email update today on one of the youngsters from the Decorah Eagle nest. I've been an avid watcher of their eagle nest cam for years and follow the growth of the babes from hostaing to fledging. This update discusses the death of one of the transmitter-monitored young eagles, found dead of lead poisoning. It's quite an interesting read; most importantly it stresses the need for hunters to move to non-lead ammo.

"How did lead shot kill D35? Scavenging animals consume lead when they eat animal carcasses or gut piles that contain lead shot or lead shrapnel. This is completely preventable! Many hunters make a conscious decision to hunt ethically and change hunting traditions in their families for the better, which includes moving to non-lead options. We can and should buy non-toxic/unleaded ammo for all game hunting. It protects everyone who eats the game we put on our tables and prevents the lead-related death of non-target species, like bald eagles, that eat carcasses and gut piles."

Here is a link to the Raptor Resource Article quoted above, and a link to their eagle cams.

What are the alternatives to, as apparently was the culprit in this case, lead shot? Stainless steel? Copper? Manganese? Space-Age Polymers? Although I have heard it is an issue, I really do not have any idea what the options are and if they are better or worse than the plain lead that has been used pretty much forever. What do you all think? What are the arguments for and against using alternatives?

Next up, our pal Vartarg shares his story as a Benchrest competitor and shows us his very nice rifle setup! Benchrest competition is a lot like F-Class, except the Benchrest guys have the sense to get up off the ground and fire from a bench, hence the name. Here is a link to the International Benchrest Shooters website.

I received my first gun, a Remington bolt action .22 when I was ten, and my first shotgun, a Winchester Model 12, when I was twelve...both gifts from my parents. So I've been around guns for a long time. I'm now 81 years old.

Along with a great deal of handgun training and shootings, over time I became an NRA firearms instructor as well as an NRA Law Enforcement instructor for handguns and shotguns. I've been a legal concealed carrier since LA first past our CCW law in the mid-nineties and even taught the required course for two years in Houma LA.

Currently my attention, and my money, are focused on long range rifle competition known as Benchrest. Our local club holds matches for both 300 and 600 yards every month.

Vartarg 1 021421 scaled.jpg

Here is a photo of the rifle I'm currently shooting with, a Savage 110 Elite in 6 Creedmoor. Although it's most often used with a bipod and rear bag in a "tactical" format, mine is set up as a benchrest gun with a mechanical front rest and rear bag suitable for allowing the gun to slide rearward during recoil. The aspect of this which I enjoy almost as much as the shooting is the hand loading process of loading my own rounds to suit my particular gun. I've hand loaded many calibers for many different guns over the years but now limit my self to the 6 Creedmoor and 9mm pistol ammo.

The range, btw, is the Prince Memorial gun range near Pioneer Louisiana....we also have PRS matches. We have shooters from several areas, from Arkansas, Mississippi as well as Louisiana. Male and female, old and young.

Very nice report Vartarg! And that's a very nice looking rifle, too. Thanks for sending this for us all to appreciate. I'm sure we'd all like to live vicariously through your match reports!

Next up, our pal GWB is looking out for those who are looking for ammunition.

I had a thought about procuring ammo. What if suppliers set up a subscription system? You would pay more, but you could, say, subscribe for 200 rounds of 9mm a month and 100 of 5.56, to be shipped on the 10th of each month. Then, when ammo came in to the supplier they would set aside your 300 rounds and ship it out when the 10th rolled around.

Well, here's something that appears to be akin to what I was suggesting "Introducing Ammo Prime membership subscription program at Target Sports USA

It's $95 for a year, and you get...

  • PRIME Discount on ALL ammo every time you shop for a whole calendar year

  • FREE Shipping on every order with no minimum order amount & no promo code required

  • Priority Inventory Alerts - Prime Members are notified prior to all other customers when new inventory is added to the site

  • Expedited order processing on all orders

  • Member Exclusive manufacturer deals & access to Prime Exclusive Products

  • VIP Phone Support - You will have your own direct line to a Prime customer support rep to help with anything you need.

  • Free Mystery Box - Prime members will receive their Mystery Box in the 4th quarter of their membership term

Those inventory alerts sound almost like a subscription for ammo. And I bet "expedited order processing" means you get your ammo before El Shmucko, who ordered the same ammo you did within 30 seconds of you.

I've been scouring those links you put in each Sunday's thread, and there is just *nothing* available except in lucky finds at $1.50 a round for a box of 50, or $1.49 a round for 1,000. Also, that gunbot link? every single one of their links is to something out of stock. Several of the websites they link to won't even take you directly to the ammo and dump you on the home page, I'm sure primarily because that ammo is actually sold out. But gunbot keeps listing all of this $0.33/rd .357mag (and .38sp, 9mm, .223) that just isn't there.

Thanks GWB! If you subscribe to the premium service, I'm sure we'd all be interested in how it turns out.

Good progress.

12 So I got a 308... or 2

Happy Valentine's Day gub threaders! Some years ago I gifted (our language is despoiled) sra blaster with a Keltec PF9 for Valentine's Day. Because I am romantic like that. She has since been upgraded on a birthday to a Sig P365 so the PF9 was re-gifted to my sister in law. (But I am NOT romantic like that!!!!) Before of course my SIL had her terrible canoe accident.

Anyway, last week I told the story of my happy little ammo accident that ended up with me in possession of 400 rds of 7.62x51 that I, ahem, did not actually need. Because I have nothing that shoots in .308.

Posted by: blaster at February 14, 2021 07:03 PM (ZfRYq)

13 SIGA3O2 2/x

Recos were of course that I should acquire something that shoots in .308 rather than sell the ammo. Running this by sra blaster got the response "well now is the time to do it" which is about as good a green light as you can get. Discussion here leaned toward AR10 and building them and perhaps even building from an 80% lower. My gunsmithing skills are slightly better than take one complete upper and slide the forward hinge pin and rear locking pin into one complete lower. So I did research and found that it is possible to assemble an AR10 that way for ~$800 all in. You just have to wait weeks for the assemblies.

Hey bro - got your email!

Posted by: Weasel at February 14, 2021 07:04 PM (MVjcR)

15 SIGA3O2 3/x

For those keen on that path:

Complete lower receiver $225 - Tennessee Arms Co -https://tinyurl.com/y7ofj96m
(mil spec but it is polymer reinforced with brass)

Complete upper receiver ~$500ish depending on options - thunderguns - https://tinyurl.com/1w095ckv Range from 16-20 inch barrels and various materials for the barrel and BCG and costs will vary. Also note in the drop-down on options they have assembled and non-assembled which adds $30-40 to the listed price so keep that in mind on your pricing calculator.

Mags/ optics/ iron sights/ slings not included.

Posted by: blaster at February 14, 2021 07:04 PM (ZfRYq)

16 SIGA3O2 4/x

I did not end up going this way. Some time ago the Mossberg MVP Patrol caught my eye. It is a carbine length (16.5 in bbl) bolt-action with polymer stock and a rail. Available in 5.56 and 7.62, and they take mags for the AR15 and AR10/M14 respectively. I was interested in the 5.56 rifle because it shared ammo and mags with stuff already in the locker. Bolt actions seem like they are less likely to be gone after by the gun grabbers because hunting. And not semi-auto. A bit of a hedge against the time when they come for the ARs. So when searching for .308s that was on my list. They are...hard to find. Zero or one or two on GB at any given time.

Posted by: blaster at February 14, 2021 07:04 PM (ZfRYq)

17 SIGA3O2 5/x

Researching the Patrol, though, I came across the Mossberg MVP Scout. Which is almost the exact same rifle as the Patrol. It differs in that it has a longer rail that allows forward mounting of a long eye relief scope and the rear iron sight is a ghost ring mounted on that rail vice a dovetail affixed to the barrel forward of the shorter rail. And some little baby rails on the forearm. Not that big a difference but for whatever reason it strikes me as more like what I want. I do not worship at the temple of Col. Jeff Cooper but the scout rifle seems like a very plausible argument. These, however, appear to be made of pure unobtainium. You just cannot find them. And they are never on GB. Well, almost never....

Posted by: blaster at February 14, 2021 07:04 PM (ZfRYq)

18 SIGA3O2 6/x

Couldn't find a Scout and its comparison others were pricier to significantly pricier (Savage 110 Scout, Ruger Gunsite Scout, Steyr Jeff Cooper Scout). But, there were a couple of Patrols up on GB, and I bid on a used one. And won! NIB the Patrol is going for over the MSRP of $681. I paid less than that at about what used ones are going for. It is going to be shipped to my FFL and hey I got a 308!

I was looking to see if it is possible to convert the Patrol to a Scout, or at least Scout-like. It LOOKS like the longer rail could be mounted on the top of the Patrol by removing the rear sight (which is forward of the rail) and screwing the front of the rail in there. And then getting the rail mounted ghost ring. But I cannot get confirmation that it is possible, nor does the longer rail appear to be available from Mossberg or any third party. And not having the baby side rails is okay. But if I can't, well, the Patrol is the package that I initially liked so that's fine.

Posted by: blaster at February 14, 2021 07:05 PM (ZfRYq)

19 Some self defense ammo beginning to appear in the usual popular calibers and I notice quite a few firearms now popping up probably because people cannot get ammo.

Posted by: whig at February 14, 2021 07:05 PM (pO7gM)

20 SIGA3O2 7/x

But trying to find the longer rails I was searching on GB and it came up. A NIB Scout. Not at auction, but buy it now. At its MSRP which is lower than the Patrol for whatever reason.

This was a sign! I wasn't looking for it, and it came up. So, umm, I bought it, too.

This, however, is an actual problem. Because I got approval from the boss to buy one. Not two. Of course, it is Valentine's Day....

Posted by: blaster at February 14, 2021 07:05 PM (ZfRYq)

21 Top ##!

Posted by: GWB at February 14, 2021 07:05 PM (lclUd)

22 SIGA3O2 8/x

So, yeah, now I have an extra gun (for those that do not understand the words in that order, it means you actually have more guns than you meant to have) and have to explain to sra blaster how it is THAT happened, and then try to resolve it. There is the Valentine option, but she never really expressed a desire for a tactical style bolt gun in .308. (I love her anyway). So that's kinda negative points: honey, here is the gun I bought because I couldn't find the one I REALLY wanted so I am giving it to you.

I am pretty sure I can sell it for what I paid for it but like many of you I have never actually sold a gun. This is just not done. Decisions, decisions. Thoughts?

In the mean time I hand tightened those screws and put the scope in the rings and I am in the process off getting the eye relief just right before torquing everything down.

46 So the AP today finally leaked out Biden's anti-gun planned legislation.
No standard magazines, ban any Scary Black Semi-Auto Rifle, all kinds of registration (so the guns are easy to find for their CCP masters) and other draconian stuff.
Essentially, the Beto plan.

I'm not going to say how pissed or disgusted I am, because I do still believe the Constitution should be followed instead of ignored when it doesn't suit your views.
Biden does not believe this. He is wrong.
Anything past this statement will certainly draw the CCP-licking flies that look for stuff like this, and then try to make an example of it to the Masses.
Forget it. Go find some other target to crush, Leftists.

47 32 Navy brat,
Fire damaged firearms are generally a no=no for restoration, the higher the cartridge pressure, the more that it is dangerous.

Each one has to be taken on a case by case basis and there are some that can never be restored to firing condition as a result. Some can but best left to people that know something of metallurgy and have the tools--e.g. gunsmiths. In a lot of cases, it costs more than the firearm was worth.

52 Now, range report: Yesterday was IDPA and, as usual, I traded time for shot placement. Though, on one stage, my time wasn't that bad.

However, one stage of note: 3 sets of three silhouettes at 7, 14 and 21 yards. Limited round count, 6 rounds per set of three, 2 per target. Magazines were to be loaded to a maximum of 6 rounds per and placed on the barrel in front of the set of targets one was engaging. So, at the first barrel, draw, shoot 6, move to the next barrel, drop the magazine, reload, shoot six more, then, over to the last barrel.

One of the guys I shoot with, knowing that I like to practice head shots, offered me $100 if I took all head shots. Knowing he was good for it, I decided, why not? So, first set of targets, managed to double tap the heads on all the silhouettes. I heard this, "You're making me nervous" in the background, but, not to worry, as I fell apart on the 14 and 21 yard targets, I'd nail the first shot, but, drop the second. Yeah, time definitely wasn't good, but, hey, who wants to turn down a chance at a hundred bucks?

56 The major issue with some foreign ammunition is that it is steel cored--that can be easily banned as having no sporting application. Gets more complicated on traditional lead cored fmj and whether target shooting is a sport. Then there are foreign manufacturers from US allies to be considered that would find the issue unfriendly.

61 From bottom of CBD's food thread. My dentist called me at work today and told me to meet him at his office and he'd replace the crown I lost yesterday. I go straight from work (slowly because icy roads plus idiots). When I get stretched out on the chair he asks 'That gun have a safety?' and I say 'Sure. Why?' He says 'Heard about a guy had his gun slip out of the holster and go off.' I told him 'Triple retention holster. Best money can buy.' I was in and out of there in 35 minutes. He told me not to eat for a hour. Funny he didn't say anything about drinking. By the way my dentist is a gun guy of the highest caliber.

Temps here have dropped seven degrees in an hour. Snow is falling like it means to stay around.
I have a discontinued S&W in .45 and magazines have been impossible to find. One of my nephews pointed me to Triple K Manufacturing of San Diego, CA.
They had them, or maybe made them. Fit perfectly.
I have long felt that four magazines loaded are better than two.
Prompt delivery via fed ex and a pretty fair price.

I've seen that one and the restoration of the Vasa, a skandi ship of war that sunk on it's maiden voyage due to having either too many guns or not enough ballast.
Both were pulled up from the deep.

89 Made a nice score this morning at a small local swap meet. Pachmayr grips tp fit my buddy's Model 10 S&W .38 special revolver, to replace warped wooden ones. Fit perfectly, cost five bucks.

And I have been tinkering on the old H&R .32 hammerless top-break revolver. It was missing the cylinder stop spring. I basically whittled one out of hunk of hacksaw blade, and made it fit. Cylinder now locks up with the trigger released, but it has developed a new (?) problem. Trigger will not lift the internal hammer unless the trigger has been allowed to snap forward forcefully.

And I got two 20-round boxes of .303 British ammo for 20 dollars a box.

106 IIRC, lead shot has been banned from waterfowl areas for well over a generation now. I can remember switching to the first steel shot maybe 40 years ago.
Lead goes the farthest, which it is why hunters like it. But it does make sense to ban it in wetland areas, because ducks and geese eat the bottom stuff from lakes. They actually eat gravel to digest their food.
Steel rusts quickly in water and goes away, eventually.
Lead never rusts, and is there forever.
Now, upland birds don't face the same issue with lead as waterfowl, so hunting pheasant or quail in the woods with lead shot isn't a problem.

135 Got to practice last Tuesday at Boyerts (Katy, TX).

I did quite a few of the new "Mozambique" drill (i.e. 2 x center mass, 1 x head shot) mentioned last week, from various ranges, both with pistol (<10 yards) and rifle (5-25 yards). Very interesting drill and I will continue practicing it going forward.
Right now, I'm looking for a little glowbull warmening because we're freezing our chalupas down here and it ain't gonna get warmer till...Friday maybe?

139 OK, range report:
The last two sundays have been mid-teens. Just shot control rounds and comparison test load, so 10-12 rounds, then go home and warm up various digits. Honest, Ladyl.
Today was 28, no wind, so back into accuracy mode, wanting to check out last week's bore cleaning. First fouling round was way off, then things tightened up. But nothing touching. Damn. Hits on steel at 300, though.
So, played with new spotting scope. Saw a splatter target at 300. After I figured that cold thick air was dropping me a half MOA, made a bunch of shots, better grouping than 100 yds. Funny sport.

147 OrangeEnt, the reason to start with long rifles in 22 LR is virtually no recoil and muzzle blast. Plus something like a single shot cricket type is easier to teach gun safety with. They are also easier to become accurate with for beginners.

Some schools also have shooting teams that use airguns that will also teach marksmanship but a lot of that is Senior High. Some scouting units also do it but generally a bit older than 9.

Not _free_, but cheaper: start with a pellet rifle. You can put a trap up and shoot, no recoil so working on technique, etc. I would start with a single-shot break action. And they're great for varmints if the need arises (yes, even the 2-legged variety).

Posted by: Weasel at February 14, 2021 07:55 PM (MVjcR)

178 I highly recommend, especially to beginners, the value of dry firing. It's easy, it costs nothing, and you can do it any time you have some down time, like watching tv.

One of the biggest issues with beginners is they can be intimidated by their firearm. It is a learned response that can be undone with safe handling and repetition.
Just drop the magazine to insure it is empty, check the gun to see it is empty, pop the magazine back in, check again to see it is empty one more time for good practice, and then point at a corner of the room, a door handle, or that little figurine on the counter.
Do it again and again. Practice dropping the magazine, checking the gun to see it is empty, and reloading the empty mag back. You will get comfortable holding your gun in no time. And the fear you (irrationally) had will be a thing of the past, replaced by a healthy respect for a firearm, similar to the respect you have for an automobile.

189 173 GWB has a good point but use the skirted lead rather than bbs. The cheap airgun traps will often fling bbs back at you, the lead skirted pellets less likely to do so.

If you go to the more expensive airguns, the break barrels can be unpleasant to fire and hard to load for kids. The ones using CO2 cartridges are better in that regard. The PCP types are very nice but start at three bills and higher plus you need a source for highly compressed air (either a pump or scuba shop friend).

I rate it a double plus good. Lots of gun history, gun info and enough stuff to confirm my bias against certain .gov agencies whose initials start with ATF and FBI, especially having lived through that part of history in the 80s, 90's.
I took about three months off of the blog after the election. After reading this, I may need to take more time off.

202 Cont. The whole story just seemed off. We are not really on the way for anybody's commute and he didn't say "I live on xxxx" Oil company was working just a couple hundred yards down the road. Obviously populated, lights and noise there, why come to someones dark house? Dude didn't force his way in and make me shoot him and I called the sheriffs dept in case he really did need a warm ride somewhere. Whole thing made me realize I probably want to carry routinely.

205 This was triggered by someone ringing my doorbell at
5:40 a couple weeks ago and trying to talk his way inside 'to warm up.'
It had been cold overnight, was about 15F right then and he looked to
be only in jeans and a hooded sweatshirt. I grabbed the Ruger before I
answered the door. Did NOT let him in.

Something similar happened to me when I lived in Kentucky. Some guy came up in my garage when I was working on my truck and asked to use my house phone. He was dressed in pajamas and was not wearing shoes. I told him to leave and he came at me.

I got up and whacked him a couple of times with a wrench and pushed him away. He ran off and I went in the house and called the Cops. They got him about 15 minutes later.

He does not know how close he came to being shot and killed.

209 I don't know how widespread the hobby is but fishing with magnets is a thing. All those lost items from canoes may be vulnerable.

It was a practice one but it did cause some excitement.

210 194 No offense to Weasel but benchresters are a weird crew and do stuff that normal folks don't. To wring out every bit of accuracy for long range, they often do stuff that simply does not matter or could be considered actually dangerous for other uses of a firearm like hunting.

However, testing loads for accuracy using a ladder target, is made easier by reloading at the range with powder, a powder measure, hand die press, an arbor press, or a lee loader, and a variety of bullets.

The bench rest dudes know their chamber, their brass, primer and powder lots, and bullets intimately at the top of the game.

Hornady Outfitter ammo is loaded with their GMax copper bullet. It's accurate in my .308 and most importantly in a hunting round it hits, expands, and penetrates like their Interlock bullet.

Regardless, I'll be on the hunt for about five hundred rounds of .45 ACP, preferably in the 185gr. fmj or 200gr. loadings. Little known fact, JMB designed the gun and the cartridge around the 200 gr. variant, but the Army wanted the 230 to more closely match it's previous .45 Colt revolver load. If it helps, I've got a like quantity of 115 gr. brass cased Blzr 9mm to trade. Pity, shipping is such a pain, or we could all do a lot more Moron Exchange 'round here.

225 DB, some brands of remanufactured are better than others. Black Hills for example has remanufactured ammo that is top notch, GA Arms has been fine for the pistol ammo I got from them. Unimax used to be ok but dirty.

New mystery company starting up or someone's mystery reloads, no thanks.

Even a close relative's free reloaded ammo might result in a trip to the gunsmith (no powder charge, stuck wadcutter in the bore's throat tying up the cylinder). That would have been less pleasant in a long rifle as you could very well shoot another round.

I didn't brandish the Ruger, I don't know if he saw it or was not inclined to force his way in cuz he saw Toby who was not barking. 243 215 OrangeEnt, a lot of times, not a guarantee, Appleseed instructors or fellow shooters will 'loan' a rifle for the duration of the meet to someone like your daughter who is deserving. A lever action in .22 LR will work but firing prone can be an issue there.

Instructors often bring extra rifles because people have issues with theirs. Call and tell the organizers what the situation is regarding job and tight finances. A lot of them will works something out. The Appleseed folks also include a large dollop of American patriotic history and why the 2A exists.

FWIW, I would not start her with a .410 as the recoil on a lot of old shotties of that type can be unpleasant along with a bigger kaboom etc. A lot of old stocks too were not designed for youths or to reduce recoil. Use that as something to work up to and make sure that the stock fits her before firing. You should also test fire it yourself first if it has not been fired in years and requires fitting a new firing pin which can be tricky.

The three gunners or action pistol shooters are more concerned with volume target than tiny holes. 264 For those contemplating a Jr. Appleseed course, I highly recommend the Ruger 10/22, and go the extra mile and equip it with the Tech Sights adjustable peep system for said rifle.

https://tinyurl.com/nxin8pwg

No gunsmithing required. It offers a longer sight radius, and you'll then be set up to follow the same instructor's direction as given to those shooting a Garand or M1-A. That's really of value in an Appleseed course.

265 Whitworth didn't just make rifles. Also artillery. The Confederates had two 12# Whitworth breech loading artillery pieces that they would roll down the beach at Fort Fisher to protect blockade runners trying to run New Inlet (Cape Fear River) to Wilmington. Range was around six miles so the union blockade ships could only pursue so far before falling under the range of the Whitworths. There is one on display at the Petersburg National Battlefield.

Don't worry about the person, if they are there outside wanting to come in, offer to call the cops for them to assist bu they are not to come into the house. One thing that helps prevent a bum rush is a full view security glass door or a metal framed wrought iron type. Makes it almost impossible to kick a door in in one go if your rough frame and door frame is mounted properly. The external security doors mean that the whole frame has to be kicked out and security doors open outwards. This is compared with a single entry door opening inwards--those are easier to force in.

My buddy might have been right - the states that legalized pot can now use that against you. You ever buy pot at one of these dispensaries? Well, you're obviously unstable, so we need to take your guns away just to be safe. Doesn't matter if it was 4 years ago or last week.

I did take CZ's purchase of Colt as a positive, since one of the rumors floating around is a ban on imported weapons. That's a nice work around for one of the best manufacturers around, at least in terms of product breadth. Dan Wesson was a pretty niche market. I'd love to see something like a CZ Shadow designed and built by Colt.

283 264 Jim gives good advice.
The fallback and a bit cheaper is the Marlin 795 (offshoot of the Marlin Model 60) using detachable mags. A Savage 64 will do in a pinch as well. Detachable mags are better suited for what Appleseed teaches and easier to do courses of fire for Appleseed but they don't turn people away if you want to plink away with a tube fed or bolt action .22 LR either. Some appleseed events will not allow centerfire depending on the range and backstop.

Techsights are about the best among peep sights for a lot of semi auto rifles. Have them on my SKS.

Well, that's partly why I suggested a pellet rifle. You can (maybe) shoot in a postage stamp. (Check your local ordnances, etc.) It's often legal to shoot an air rifle within city limits, where it's seldom legal with one that goes bang. And a good wood fence will provide an adequate backstop.

If you want to just practice good weapon safety and some technique, then go another step down with a quality airsoft gun (air, but with plastic BBs).

Yeah, the family house up in the hills required idiots to drive over half a mile up a narrow little driveway, and then another 200 yards down a narrow dirt road. And those that do have mental or medical issues will know that the last thing they want to do, if they want to retain their Constitutional rights, is to seek medical help.
Think for a second how utterly stupid that is for every one on any side of the discussion. Armed? Do you have mental issues? Stay away from medical help or the FedGov will seek you out and take you down! This is your FedGov, CCP New and Improved!

308 whig.. thanks. Most fun I had shooting a full Appleseed course, was with a bone-stock M-96 Swedish Mauser. 6.5x55, of course. With stripper clips, I had no problem keeping up with the any of the semi-auto shooters. And with that 29" barrel and "open", but very fine sights, I had a VERY unfair inherent accuracy advantage.

Was a 1905 model, and I shot that course in 2005. Hundred year old rifle, still shot MOA with open sights. That's one I regret having let slip away. I've got it's near twin in a 1911 year, but it's not the accuracy gem the '05 was.

Don't discount the old .mil-surps, and buy LOTS Of stripper clips and learn well how to use 'em. You'll surprise 'em even if you're bereft of 30 rd. Standard Capacity mags.

328 Raptors getting sick from eating lead shot or bullets has to be one of those mostly imaginary First World Problems. Lead shot is already banned from waterfowl environments, and in upland hunting it's brought home with the dead bird. A rifle bullet is usually going to pass through the animal, in which case there's no problem, or else lodge in muscle, hide or bone and be brought home with the field-dressed carcass.. Only rarely would it stop in the viscera and be left with the offal in the woods.

Savage 64's are also a very accurate .22 LR for the money. MCarbo kit for them too.

Looking back, I'm certain not a one of them found it's way into any dayroom or patient's reading stack.

I think one consideration is that with shot some of it misses the target, so it ends up in the environment.

One other item (not directed at Bill's comment), though, on why lead is used is because it reshapes when it hits. If you make a bullet that will just punch a hole clean through, you're not as likely to kill your game. It mushrooming and such is how it transfers the energy to the target. Not sure how good those qualities are in other materials.

359 If Biden* gets his way, there will be a lot of vets in for a shock when their NICS for a gun purchase is denied. The VA put in a presumptive clause on PTSD claims. For example, if you have a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, anything with a Combat V, etc. PTSD is, more or less, a given, with the degree of disability to be determined. Service officers, DAV, Legion, VFW will often use this on a claim to boost it. Say a Vet is at 90%, a 10% boost for PTSD raises it to 100%, a substantial increase in compensation.

366 343 LeftCoastDawg,
Marlin used microgroove barrels more or less from the 50's on in rimfire and that is part of the secret plus the Model 60 is a damn fine .22 design. Most of the parts are interchangeable between Model 60 and 795 with the caveat of Model 60's being produced so long that there is an old model where the parts were altered back in the 80's that do not jive with later Model 60's or 795s.

373 362 In addition to being the greatest gun designer, John Browning was the worlds greatest judge of patent attorneys. He and FN would patent something as mundane as position of grip screws. When you see some early 20th century pistols, like a Savage, Remington , or the horrid S&W model 35, a lot of the design and resulting complexity is to circumvent Browning patents.

396 383, sorry, we cross posted but given the age, I would replace the firing pin spring too if you can find one. A problem with using nails is the quality of steel that China makes them of today, shaping them so you dont pierce a primer, and length so you do not fire the shotgun accidentally. Can also be a problem if the firing pin hole was widened to fit a homemade pin so a replacement leaves space for the primer to tie up the shotgun.

Have to tig weld that and it is tricky biz.

428 OrangeEnt, That one is easy to diagnose at home, take the new firing pin and compare with the existing broken one.

You can also insert the new pin into the firing pin hole. Snug is ok and the fp can be dressed a bit using a hillbilly lathe (electric drill chuck spinning the firing pin with emery cloth to remove a spot of material evenly), a big area around pin not so much.

Now go to go as wife awaits.

Now, well, they are out constantly also. I get alerts but you have seconds to get it. Not that I'm in a huge need right now. I think my membership comes up for renewal this summer. I'll probably not renew while all this crap is going on. No real point to it if they don't have anything to sell.

504 Bit of a followup on the H&R hammerless .32 I was reporting on earlier this evening. Took my home-made cylinder stop spring out of it, and it was clearly bent from the shape it had when I put it in, which probably means I made it wrong. Put the gun back together with that piece left out (as it was acquired) and the DA trigger now works fine, although the trigger pull is pretty fierce, might be twenty pounds. But it works every time.

Thinking I may be able to make a better copy of the cylinder stop spring by forming a dummy out of easily-worked material like copper or sheet aluminum, making it fit the fram slot perfectly, and then using that as a pattern to make one from spring steel.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 14, 2021 11:22 PM (mzC78)

505 The lead poisoning raptor issue has some credibility issues. It's likely as fabricated as the whole Silent Spring push against DDT.

There isn't lead left in carcasses laying around for the raptors to consume. The Hunters are taking the game from the field. The supposed path into the food chain isn't there. If there are any legitimately poisoned, then it has to be a more deliberate source unrelated to ammunition and hunting.

I've seen more eagles, bald eagles, around Nebraska in the past several yearas than I can remember and lead is legal for upland birds like pheasants. It's only restricted from water fowl or certain areas.

Late to the party, I realize, but...

I'd suspect they will ONLY restrict those veterans who were honorably, less then honorably, or dishonorably discharged from owning a gun. Just them.

Yup, Kerrville is a half hour drive away. Great little town, beautiful drive.

That's what I've heard. Sounds like a great area.

Just the drive on I-10 through that area is worth it, to say nothing of side roads. The TX Hill Country is awesome.

512 No real point to it if they don't have anything to sell.

Very true. Welcome to the Gun Thread!

513 No range time this week, BUT in an unfortunate acknowledgement that one of my hobbies featured on this thread continue to exist in the crosshairs of politicians and others, I joined the TSRA.

http://www.tsra.com

Again, unfortunate (really!) but if we band together - perhaps I am naive - we can hit back and convince people, politely but firmly, that so long as marksmanship is pursued in a perfectly responsible way (as we discuss here on the thread) that we should be left alone to pursue our hobbies.

514 Bought a .44 mag Rossi lever-action rifle recently. Then said, "Hey, now I need ammo for when the gun eventually shows up!". So, 15 or so online ammo dealers later, I found SG Ammo, which was listed on the gun thread all along. Got the ammo in less than a week. Good place. Also, when I bought the gun, the shop was PACKED. Shooters, buyers, concealed-carry-permit class people, it was great. Even one car in the lot with an EU license plate (I think D = Deutschland). Wilkommen, Kamerad!
