The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Trust is a powerful thing, but once lost is difficult to regain. The problem is that for many on the normal side of the political/social bell curve, trust is reflexive, because we ascribe our own views on appropriate conduct to those on the other end of that curve. Even one of our more successful politicians, whose suggestion that we "trust, but verify" is axiomatic, trusted, didn't verify, and we got the The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, and look how well that turned out.

Parler's New Hosting Provider Bans All 'Hateful Material', Setting the Stage for Massive Censorship

"We specifically reserve the right to refuse to provide the Service to customers or End Users engaged in dissemination of material that may cause us to be subject to attacks on our network, or that while technically legal, run counter to our corporate principles," SkySilk wrote in their terms of service.
We trust and trust and trust. Or maybe we are willfully blind to the reality of our political enemies, that they are corrupt beyond measure, and will do and say anything to achieve their goals.

lucytrust.jpg

A more reasonable mantra would be, "Hope for the best but plan for the worst," because I can't seem to remember any significant political or social compromise from which we didn't get the absolute worst.

Winston Churchill was vilified for his harsh evaluations of Adolph Hitler, right up until Hitler did exactly what Churchill had long predicted. Can one argue after the fact with his estimation of Hitler?

If Hitler invaded hell I would make at least a favourable reference to the devil in the House of Commons.
That is a man who is confident that he understands his enemies.

Until we channel Sir Winston and expect the Democrats and their Brown Shirts to behave the way they always have and the way they say they will, we will continue to lose ground in the battle for America.

11 News for those who can hear their show: Walton & Johnson, my favorite conservative comedy talk show hosts (34 years now!), have started up a forum website. It's called "Walton & Johnson Uncensored": https://wjuncensored.com/

Even if you can't hear their show locally, you can go to iHeart Radio and maybe some other sources. Very funny, very pro-Trump. Have a look at the forums. I mentioned and posted a link to Ace of Spades there. You can discuss other stuff besides politics too.

25 Trust is not damaged. Trust is shattered, and the fault lines keep radiating further and further out. It is no coincidence that we now see articles about the failure of institutional trust. Increasing numbers of people are decreasingly trusting of increasing numbers of institutions.

This is bad. This is real bad. The system grinds to a halt without trust. But it will happen. Trust has been shattered because everyone in any position of authority lies all the time. To regain trust, they don't have to stop lying. The liars need to be publicly removed and then their replacements have to not lie for at least a generation. They need to be proven out time and again for a long while before trust can be restored.

That will not happen. We will just continue to arc toward a zero-trust environment, and eventually the system will collapse as a result.

Just now they sent out an e-mail stating that because of a busted water pipe, they have to shut off water to the whole community. It's just the way the water pipe system is set up that if they have to shut off the water to one unit, it affects the whole community. Useless ass hats. I'm glad they got voted off the island, they've been useless since they were hired. Their term is up March 1.

33 People are willing to trust tho they know they're at risk.

They hope that somehow the person isn't lying to them cause then they'll have to do something or what the person is promising won't happen and they want it to.

So they suspend disbelief and that's how grifters work. They make the mark convince themselves of the grifter's honesty or his promise will be made good.

It's laziness that keeps us coming back for more. Just want to face all the work necessary (and possible bloodshed) when we find our government is lying to us and doesn't intend to stop. And the people we elect to represent us soon find out who they really represent.

Look at what they did; took away committee spots and threaten to dismiss. that's what happens when you don't go along.

38 There is another trust problem: vicarious trust. We use vicarious trust a *lot.* The internet, for example (SSL certificates) are built on a formalized system of vicarious trust (I see the green lock icon, which means the site is what it says it is, and someone else - like Verisign - has confirmed that. I trust Verisign, therefore I trust the site. It's vicarious trust).

But we informally use vicarious trust all the time. "X is reliable and vouches for Y, and therefore I trust Y." But it cuts both ways. The press used to hold a position of handing out vicarious trust - the paper quoted the figure, and I trust the paper, so I trust the figure - but that has been shattered. The government is in the vicarious trust business, too, but it has been shattered.

System lying not only breaks the institutions, it breaks the vouchsafes. If you have vicarious trust in the system - and we do - then system dishonesty actually leaves with *no* trustworthy sources because they all pollute each-other.

Welcome to zero trust. It's a bitch.

That's why even a whiff of rebellion scares the heck out of them cause they know it's a delicate balance and all that has to happen is a preference cascade and a million or 2 people decide "f**k this. I'm going outlaw" and the entire edifice comes down.

Oh they'd fight it but we have the numbers.

Apart from whatever decision they made up to the point that Amazon deplatformed them, once dropped from their hosting site, they were put in a very poor negotiating position - likely accept censorship demands from the few hosts willing to work with them, or stay down until they build their own. By design. They did this to Gab, they do it to other apps: give them time to establish a business, pull the rug out unless they agree to be micromanaged by Big Tech.

They SHOULD have known this would happen and protected themselves. Think that is the point at which greed and/or arrogance destroyed them, not whatever they gave away in recent days in order to save their business.

But also, yeah, they were a greedy data farm to begin with.

81 Maybe we need to stop thinking we're battling for America.

Start thinking we're battling for our own lives. Because that's what really is at stake. But folks don't want to do that because it means a very dangerous path must be taken and so far the threat to our lives is not real.

We can see it's outlines but faintly. More now than in the past but still faint. If they can back off for a while the lines may disappear and everyone goes back to the way it was. But that will be very thin and easily broken again.

We must as individuals make the choice to live as slaves or die free. And that's a very heavy decision to make. What to do after you make that decision is next hardest.

Parler is closed. So I dont bother. And so no reason to grow their audience.

Twitters positive was that it was a breaking news source in the beginning. If you arent open, you cant spread your influence.

Or maybe we are willfully blind to the reality of our political enemies, that they are corrupt beyond measure, and will do and say anything to achieve their goals.

--------

Exactly this. Anybody who still thinks we can co-exist peacefully in a political system with these people is just delusional.

But, even many of us who do understand their corruption and criminality still drastically underestimate the lengths to which they'll go. And that's actually understandable, to me. If you're raised in an advanced Western society with minority rights, the rule of law, and a republican form of government, it seems impossible that a major party would commit mass-murder.

But they desperately want to. That desire is barely contained beneath the surface. It emerges more every day, and sooner rather than later, they'll have the means to carry it out. Anybody who thinks that mass-killing is off the table or out of the question in the coming years needs to reevaluate that idea... these people are power-mad monsters, absolutely no better or different than Stalinists and Maoists. Just operating within a system that was able to restrain their ambitions for a period of time.

100 The day Rush is gone will be a day I don't take lightly. I don't think anyone here would take it lightly. But I know there will never be another Rush. He is not going to be replaced as that will not be possible. He has been a constant even for those who don't listen regularly. I recall first hearing him at college. He was on almost every bus that used to pick us up. It was Harvey and Rush. I am sure that would be considered a hate crime now

Regret to inform you that all of them probably use electric to control their temp and electrical to ignite the flame.

I thought the same thing until I realized that the only thing that would work would be the top burners. The oven is controlled by a thermostat and piezo electric starter. The top burners can be turned on and ignited manually but not the oven.

What I've done is buy a bunch of dedicated propane tanks and a two burner stove that takes propane.

Even then there's a limit on how long that would last.

Oh and the Gas company surely uses electric to control the gas line and even emergency generators have a time limit due to lack of fuel.

As a young man I was blown away, and thought that Rush was so good. Who could ever replace him when he eventually died? I expected rush to go on for decades.

And he did. And now we are at that end. And maybe the end for many things. I am sure rush tried not to think of the disaster that is occurring. I praise him for holding off the darkness for so long.

It is ironic that the darkness comes as Rush is ready to move to the Light, returning his talent m, that like all things, was on loan from God.

God Bless Rush. I will miss you and what you have done for us.

One thing in our favor, if we have the wit to recognize and use it, is time. Even with the centuries of anti-Semitism in German history, it took Hitler years (he expressed the desire to exterminate the Jews as far back as 1920), careful, tentative steps (the T-4 program) and years of Goebbels' and Streicher's propaganda to actually get the death camps up and running.

There is a chance to stop the left, but I fear the right hasn't the stomach or, frankly, the desire. Too many on this side are like Teh Donald and still believe in the fiction of a constitutional republic.

My Texas Adventure: my entire neighborhood has had no power for over 24 hours now. At midnight it turned on for 10 minutes, then turned off again. What a tease! Thank Heaven and preparation that we can keep 4 rooms warm with nat gas burners - stove, gas logs, and 2 old style room heaters, so that lets us go on. I was washing dishes this morning the old fashioned way, by boiling water and putting it in a pan, wash by hand! I set a gallon of tea outside to freeze solid and put it back into my fridge since it's been off for a day, turning it back into an icebox. So, we survive, but it's sure annoying. Came down to a place downtown with power to get back on my email!

a dark irony is that the power shortage is in large part because Texas built so many wind powered generators over the last 10 years. When the temperature got below 10 degrees in West Texas, the generators all froze and all wind power in the state shut down; that's the source of the greatest shortage. What a great supply - it works until you absolutely, positively need it, and then it's guaranteed to shut down until you don't really need it anymore.
Brilliant plan.

There is still some electricity involved. Hot water heat requires electricity for the thermostats and possibly a pump. Forced-air still needs the fan to run or that toasty warm air in the furnace can't be distributed.

But those are things that you *can* run off a genset, unlike electric heat which is far too demanding.

I think one of the methods of fighting back is to put the spotlight on the evil. Cummo's New York nursing home thing is unfolding before us. When Californica can't keep the lights on, when Biden's "policies" tank the economy, or get us tangled up in more international "adventures," we can focus on the evil behind it, and maybe... just maybe wake up enough people to the rot on the left.

Because as much as I don't trust anybody on the right, I'm more or less resigned to the fact that we're going to be "governed" by autocrats and oligarchs. I just would prefer they be autocrats and oligarchs that don't want me dead.

This. It's not a big secret, either. You can go read the WEF's information about it. This isn't Build-a-berger or Illuminati/Knights Templar silliness. These are world leaders telling you what's going to happen. They're very open about the whole thing.

They're killing capitalism and tanking your dollar. There will be EXTREMELY rich people, and then the rest of us. There will be no middle class. All that money you saved? Those 401Ks you're worried about them "taking"? They don't have to tax or take a single thing. All they've got to do is make those dollars worthless. And they're well on their way. $2T is nothing to the feds. They'll do it every year if they want. Guess what happens to your little $400K retirement savings when they do?

Plus the pilots can be hard to get to. But you are correct you can get the pilot to light but with no power when the heater gets hot and the blower doesn't come on then it shuts down.

Better to have an emergency gennie. No THAT you can get them to run off of Nat Gas which would be best of both worlds. Expensive tho.

I'm tired of the complaining, especially from our side, about the Nazi Germany comparisons - especially with regards to Gina Carano - because she was exactly, 100% correct with what she tweeted.

That being said, I'm afraid that we'll never be able to explain this particular analogy in such a way as to not lose the underlying message within the explanation of it. Because of this, I think we should use another historical analogue which is more recent, and probably even more apt than the German one.

248 To get here has been a multi step process. One of the core, early, "successes" of the left was to differentiate right and leftwing "hate".

I believe 20 years ago most leftists would have included antifa or BLM as a "hate group"

Separating it this way then allows them to "crack down on hate" first on people that actually fit the bill like real White Supremacists then to Alex Jones types, then to everyone that isn't kneeling for them.

The way to answer is this then is to use the same tactic against leftwing groups in red states. Start arresting anyone that went to a BLM protest and charge them with insurrection. Deny government employment to anyone involved with antifa, etc.

I have solar panels across most of my south-side-facing roof, bought when both Kalifornia and the Fed offered huge cash-back and tax write-offs. For me, the return, based on electricity rates of when I got them, was about 10 years after all those discounts (which I paid for anyway through my taxes, so what the hell, right? Might as well). Otherwise it would not have made any sense. But you're right; they don't work very well in cloudy weather or the dark when you'd need the power most to keep warm, and no, batteries for it never made economical sense.

253 220 FYI, when my wife and I move, no matter where we go, a backup generator for the house will be in the budget

------------------------------------- If you are thinking about a generator -- here are some ideas. After a couple of back-to-back ice storms years ago, Mrs OCiS insisted on a generator. I bought a portable gas generator with 9000+ watts of generating power with a 30 amp feed, plus some 120v outlets. To patch it into the house, get an electrician to install a 30amp plug on the outside of your home. At the panel, put in a manual interlock switch. This prevents you from backfeeding to the utility. Now you can control 100% of your panel with what you want to run. Your morning needs may be different from afternoon, evening and night time. Yes you have to manually flip breakers but for me that is nothing because of the flexibility I have. Why a portable generator? If times get really really bad and you have to bug out, presuming you have a truck or trailer, you can take it with you.

Posted by: Our Country is Screwed at February 16, 2021 12:00 PM (N39Ws)

254 If you are unfamiliar with the lithium battery packs, you should research them. Jackery is the big name, but there are others. All the monitoring tools are built in and they are very portable. You can charge by 110, 12v, and solar. Depending upon the size, you can run a lot of appliances. I mentioned using these to run an electric blanket, but they can power LED lights and charge your electronics. I wouldn't call them cheap but they would work even for apartment dwellers.

As for wood, there are a number of companies making tent stoves. These would be great as backup heat in an RV. Might even get away with one as backup in a house. Could at least take the chill off.

There is just so much stuff out there that would be great as a backup for a power outage. It just takes some research.

261 This won't be well received, but the problem is that free speech isn't protected on the internet. And by free speech I mean the right to openly hate Jews and minorities and gays and anyone else you want to hate for reasons that are ignorant or just because you want to get a rise out of people.

This blog, for instance, removes anti-Semitic comments and overtly racist comments because, and I have the greatest of confidence in this, the COBs and the boss are great people and abhor that kind of language and thought process.

But there also is a second, ancillary reason. They also know that the blog could be deplatformed and removed from existence if it is determined by those that control tech that it is unacceptable. This is reality.

Once it has been determined that certain words are forbidden, the only question is really when they get around to your particular lexicon.

The line for free speech is drawn at one's right to hate openly, once that line has been crossed we are just negotiating the price.

292 I bought a 100KW natural gas generator a few months ago for the restaurant and our new building. It was used with 138 hours on it, that used to be the standby generator for a pump house. All in all, I've got about $3800 into it. The automatic switch gear that came with it retails for about $15,000 and the generator new is $45,000, so I think I got a pretty good deal.

too bad, I kind of liked him but that sounds like he was a legit jagoff their. And when did natural gas become the standard of legit home heating. As i recall, in the North East, they use heating oil for the real cold. Not saying everyone should switch to that, I am still waiting on the Global Warming. But I do recall they use heating oil in New England and other really cold places because, well, it works.

297 252 what lessons should [Trump] have learned?

Posted by: Quint at February 16, 2021 12:00 PM (gkHkW)

1. Many Americans are only mildly interested in politics. He did well in 2016 because he talked about jobs and the economy--things that matter to the marginally-interested--but the 2020 campaign leaned heavily on rallies to fire up the base. This was an obvious blunder.

2. The "yah fiahd" shark-tank model may work in the sleazy real estate world but it's a haven for sycophants and backstabbers who, in politics, have access to very powerful tools. Trump should have figured this out after the first few incidents, but he didn't and so his own hand-picked lackeys were one of his greatest threats throughout his term in office.

3. The pandemic and its lockdowns caused real hurt for real people, and while doing what he could to keep the economy going was the right move the constant grandstanding and rambling press events turned off many voters. His popularity was already waning in the summer, but rather than take a more conciliatory "we'll get through this together" tack he mostly ignored conditions on the ground and scheduled more rallies for his dudes.

Nope.

The line for free speech is they are allowed to say what they want, and they are allowed to control what everyone else says. That's the line.

They are the most openly hateful fucks on the planet and they give us daily proof.

i have my criticisms as well. He could have used better terms at times in his speeches. He could have been a bit more Reaganesque if you will. But he won and those that tried to play to the press lost, not once, not twice, but every time. Check out Dole, Bush Sr., McCain, and Romney.

I don't buy a lick he failed over Corona. What has been shown that he failed on the issue? They used this to finish him. If people believe in the idea of God being "on their side" in major events, that certainly does not work in politics.

Trump was in your face and never backed down. Sure he could have adjusted a few things at certain times. But could that not be said about anyone, at anytime? Trump was right the media and Deep State was against him. If anything, he played that down.

307 It isn't about Parler, though. It's about the coordinated campaign to deplatform a single site. And it f'ing worked. So now the Wokists are going against Baen Books. We need to learn how to fight this shit. Ace WILL be on the list to target at some point.

I disagree.

How can anyone with a straight face say Trump's Covid updates "were grandstanding?" He shared the stage with Birx and Fauci and that Surgeon General nonentity.
He also had scientists and business leaders up on stage sharing the spotlight, and of course Pence.
CUOMO was the grandstanding one, and the media couldn't get enough of him.

Also, whenever trump tried to sound positive, like saying "we'll get over this", the media would say he was wishing Covid away and not taking it seriously.

His handling of Covid was one of his greatest achievements --and he was NEVER going to get credit for it.

Posted by: bob at February 16, 2021 12:18 PM (TV+ih)

Shooting brownshirts may or may not become necessary, but it is absolutely necessary that non-leftists get organized and push back. If just one of our corporate frenzz got broken by a several million customer strong boycott, the others would take note and be far less keen on kowtowing to the SJWs in the future. If a get-out-the-vote campaign ousted a few terrible politicians at the local and state level, the resulting safe haven for those who want to be left along would be a powerful symbol that it's possible for people to exist outside the swampy miasma of corrupt uniparty statism.

I rage all day everyday that I'm not able to lead such a charge, but the simple truth is that engineers like me are good at speccing out the system but very bad at selling it, because our people skills resemble a honey badger on PCP.
