First-World Problems...Part 2C (Base 15)

2nd base.jpg

Baseball is unique among professional sports in its obsession with statistics. Of course all of them compile an insane amount of trivia, but baseball's love of the numbers links it to its history, and the never-ending debates of who is best,

But along with MLB's suicidal embracing of BLM and the other SJW causes they are meddling with the rules of the game, and that is simply a bridge too far. Tweaking the strike zone is fine; revamping the rules for plays at the plate is...okay...but changing the essence of the game by placing a man on second at the start of extra innings allows runs to score in spite of excellent play on the part of the defense, and that is simply silly and disrespectful of the traditions of the game.

And I haven't even mentioned seven-inning doubleheader games!

But I will give MLB credit, they have succeeded in driving away legions of dedicated fans who would normally be excited beyond all reason for the season to begin. Will I still watch baseball? Sure. As much? Absolutely not. And as for going to see a game? No thanks. I won't spend money on a sport that has no respect for me, its own game, and the country that made its success possible.

20 Baseball lends itself uniquely to keeping elaborate statistics because, in essence, it consists of a whole series of individual one-on-one matches on which statistics can be kept.

Contrast, e.g., football. As soon as the ball is snapped 11 one-on-one matches take place. How could you possibly keep stats on, e.g., how many blocks each interior lineman missed?

32 It was the rule changes mostly that soured me on baseball. As a kid it was the one sport where I did fairly well (except at the plate - was never a good hitter). I mostly played first base, or right field.

I used to love watching games, particularly in the playoffs. But it just doesn't work for me now. Last WS I watched was the Cubs when they won. That was cool to see.

39 I like 7 inning doubleheaders. They should also institute a mercy rule. 7 run lead after 7, game's over. Also, a batter who strikes out should forfeit his next at bat. The pace (too slow) and style (boring 3 true outcomes) of play...not SJW messaging, which compared to other major American entertainment entities is marginal in baseball...are hurting pro baseball.

45 Catchers can't block the plate, no more takeout slides at second, no more chin music. It's a reflection of the Pussification of America.

I have to respectfully disagree. People can get seriously injured by those plays. Note that baseball cleats, unlike football cleats, stick in the ground; if someone takes you out, and you don't get your feet up in the air, you will break your leg, pretty much guaranteed, because your foot will not move. At. All.

Catchers could NEVER legally block the plate without the ball, any more than any other position player could. (Otherwise a first baseman could just move five feet up the line and clothes line a runner before he got to first base, then receive the ball and tag the runner out.) Contra the explicit rules, it was just an accepted practice.

The problem is that all too often the ball and the runner get there at the same time. Was the catcher blocking the plate without the ball? Hard to say. In any case, the runner has no idea if the ball will be there before or not.

So eliminating blocking the plate, and freight-training the catcher, is a good thing.

Buster Posey. The change was long overdue.

It's very much like pass interference in football. You can't tackle the receiver before he gets the ball. Fair enough. Same thing with the crackback block. It's a cheap shot, and all too easy to really injure somebody.

In baseball, runners can run over fielders making a play, fielders cannot block the bases, and catchers cannot block the plate.

76 Sports used to be based on tradition. Was the old guy better than the new guy? Can this decades old record be broken? My grandfather watched this team play as a kid, and now I am. The modern "elites" have a worldview that tells them they are the smartest people that have ever lived. People before then were basically cavemen, because they didn't know how to operate computer programs. So they hate traditions of any kind and think only they know what to do and want to change everything mostly just to change it. They also revere PR and image, so they view sports not as an independent thing that should stand apart from politics but as an unused platform to bend people with. Not understanding at all why people watch sports, they have destroyed everything that made people watch it, and all their interest is dissipating at a time where sports as mostly a stay home escape should make sports bigger than ever.

No, no. What interior lineman missed the most blocks last season? No idea, right? It's easy to find out who had the most sacks, but who missed the block that allowed the sack? Who knows? And of course, a factor in sacks is good coverage by the defensive secondary.

86 I spent my childhood at the local AA baseball field. Neat grandstand...a WPA project. We were poor, so Dad would smuggle in a big bag of peanuts but he'd spring for soft drinks and a beer for himself. We sat in the bleachers, of course. (I knew we weren't poor any more the day Dad walked up to the window and ordered box seats.)

I quit caring about baseball the day they instituted the designated hitter rule. That told me something, too...that baseball was no longer about the game. It's only about the money.

87 I'm still pissed over the strike in 1994. The Expos were the only sports team I truly cared for and they were going all the way. We had the Lynx, their Triple A farm team and it was awesome.

Then I had a 12 pack for the Ottawa Senators. After the second strike, I said that's it I'm out.

Went to my first ever Jays game two summers ago, just to see Galarraga Junior play. Funny how many people were wearing Expos gear up and down Blue Jay Way. I could say I saw both father and son play, man his dad could throw from right field. Remember when Pedro Martinez was this squirt that the Dodgers dumped? Felipe Alou was one of the best managers, of all time.

93 MLB just eliminated the names of all the minor legaues. International League, Pacific Coast League, Eastern League, Teaxs League...all gone. Some of these leagues have been around for 100 years, different permutations, but the names stuck and kept up their lineage. Replaced with AAA East, AAA West, AA Northeast, AA Midwest, etc. Soulless corportate technocracy, justified by "efficiency", I guess. I'm not sure the men who run baseball understand why a lot of Americans like baseball.

Posted by: dartist at February 14, 2021 02:28 PM (+ya+t)

It is, but then there's the reasonableness factor. I played first base man and boy for decades, and only got spiked once. The rule changes are designed to eliminate situations in which injuries are not only possible, but very likely.

It's exactly the same reason that roughing the passer or the kicker is forbidden in football, along with hitting someone who is out of bounds, or hitting in head to head. The chance of someone getting really hurt are high.

102 I played baseball and softball for 20 years and the one thing that I really appreciated about baseball was that, if you didn't know what the rule was for a situation, it invariable was what is most fair.

Also I like that the rules grew organically, The rules were codified as they came up. For instance, there didn't used to be a rule that says that the batter has to advance to first base when the ball is hit fairly, but then the situation came up where, to avoid a double play, the batter just stayed in the box until he was tagged out, not forcing the baserunners to move. The MLB rules had to be changed to where it is assumed the batter will advance and force the other runners whether any moves or not.

103 2013 F150 radio.

I assume you already pulled the neg battery cable and let the truck sit for 10-15 min.

Chances are you need a new one, or replacement.

That's the bad news, but the good news is they made a million of them so boneyards will be stocked. Other end of that is this is a common problem and you risk having the same problem with the replacement.
Also looks like you might need to have the dealership flash the replacement radio.

Posted by: Inogame at February 14, 2021 02:34 PM (+2xjH)

104 There's an objective reason for rules intended to reduce injuries: certain players bring in the fans.

Remember at one time football teams used to try to injure star QBs by freight-training after they'd thrown the ball. The league stopped that crap because 1) it was a cheap shot, and 2) losing star QBs for the season kicked attendance in the balls.

They are under no obligation to make sure the outcome of a game is fairly decided any more than a Movie Director is obligated to provide historical facts or a 'fair' outcome. Yep. One of the things I dislike about football is the excessive specialization of the players. ("He's the third and long yardage guy.") For my money, I think they should only be allowed to change players at times out, or injuries, in which case the guy is out of the rest of the game.

The DH was a move toward such excessive specialization, along with the dick LaRussa and his pitch count, the middle reliever, and the closer crap. When I played competitively, you continued pitching as long as you were effective. I once threw an 11 inning game in HS, where 7 inning games (for time reasons) were the norm.

171 The DH was a move toward such excessive specialization, along with the dick LaRussa and his pitch count, the middle reliever, and the closer crap. When I played competitively, you continued pitching as long as you were effective. I once threw an 11 inning game in HS, where 7 inning games (for time reasons) were the norm.
Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at February 14, 2021 02:43 PM (YqDXo)

One of the interesting things about the change in the game is pitcher velocity. People think pitchers throw harder these days. They don't. The phony speed guns they use now are for show more than anything else, but there is a significant change in how pitchers pitch, which creates part of the illusion.

If everyone from the starter to the four or five other guys they routinely bring into a normal game, throw as hard as they can with 60-90% of their pitches, then yeah, it looks like they're throwing harder. Back in the era of the pitcher, those guys threw JUST as hard as anyone today, but I'm guessing the ratio of pitches thrown at maximum velocity was somewhere around 25%. Or less.

The documentary, Fastball, talks about this, and I believe, if I remember correctly, they determined the fastest pitch ever recorded, was from Bob Feller. I believe it was clocked at 98 at the time, but with some rather complicated analysis, they figured out by modern standards it would be somewhere closer to 108... or something like that.

191 One of the pernicious effects of the DH is that pitchers don't bother batting at all.

We have a number of minor league pitchers who come to our practice field in the off season. I've invited them to take BP with us, but they're not interested. "We're pitchers," they reply. I pointed out that the ability to handle the bat - bunting, if not hitting - could improve their W-L record, and let them stay in the game instead of being lifted for a pinch hitter. No interest. (Dumb asses.)

This is why even in the NL most pitchers cannot bunt to save their lives, much less hit at all.

Another pet peeve: coaches/managers sending in signs for pitches. I would never have accepted that.

I'll throw what I think I should throw, OK? Who gets charged with the hits and runs, after all? For the same reason, I viewed the catcher's signs as suggestions, and nothing more, and would happily shake off the catcher if I disagreed.

And it's why there is more headhunting and beanball nonsense going on these days. Pitchers don't have to worry about standing in the box themselves.

People think there were more beanballs in the past, because of the reputations of guys like Gibson and Drysdale, but that's more bullshit that can be clearly refuted by data, if anyone is willing to look. Which most sportswriters and broadcasters won't. They just spout nonsense all day long, and people take it for truth.

Yup. I'd like to ask Biden and Beto why states with no license required to carry handguns aren't totally depopulated because of the continual mass gun battles in restaurants, stores, parks, and everywhere else.

If the gun control nuts get their way near-term on "assault weapons," "high-cap" magazines, and needing a license to buy more than 25 rounds of ammo a year, in 20 years, shotguns, machetes and knives off all kinds, and baseball bats and crowbars will be illegal. Hell, 2x4's will be banned.

You have to remember, the DH is used at every collegiate level, and at every minor league level. A pitcher coming out of HS will never touch a bat (other than a fungo) again until they make the Majors, and even then, only if they are in the NL. Also, unlikely that the NL pitcher will swing a bat unless they are a starter, as the relievers will be victims of the double switch. The exception for the reliever would be if the game is no longer in doubt.

270 MLB's current commish is consumed with bringing corporate efficiency to baseball. He absolutely cannot stand the pace of play. He is repelled by the history of the game, except when identity politics is needed for demographic marketing purposes.

CEO Rob's latest innovation is to "reform" the minor leagues, cutting the unruly large number of teams, and thereby abandoning the spiritual home of baseball. Towns are losing teams, and the leagues are renamed. The "International League" and the "Pacific Coast League" are now AAA East and West.

As a baseball fan I'm shocked MLB is so suicidal, but these are the times in which we live.

45 years aqo I read a sci-fi short story that had computerized/CGI sports leagues causing the demise of all live pro sports. The story was about the day of the last live-player Super Bowl, that no one attended or watched because the CGI League Super Bowl was on TV at the same time. The CGI League in the story consisted of teams from the past, voted on each year by fans. In a given season you could have a Super Bowl with 1965 Green Bay Packers against the 1972 Dolphins, for example. It was a short story so did not go into details of what years' rules were used and how player abilities were determined.

I think we are headed towards the situation in that story. Why pay real players if you can have teams of all-stars, selected by fan votes. Or simply made-up athletes?

I really like the way the KC Royals of a few years ago played. One time they were down by a couple runs in the late innings, had runners on second and third, and their big bopper of the time, Kendrys Morales, came up and was quickly down to his last strike.

What did he do? Did he swing for the fences again? No. He shortened up, and punched the next pitch for a line drive single to CF, driving in two runs. Good baseball.

Meanwhile, the Padres of that time would have a .200 hitter come out of his shoes, strike out, and return to the dugout. Stupid baseball.

Russian and European leagues are reducing the size of their rinks. And for what it's worth the top Russian league is lower scoring than the NHL. With the wider ice surfaces they focus on defense.

Games can be found, on Youtube and elsewhere. Problem is, everyone seems to have all the same games, so there are great gaps in what film still remains of World Series, some of them even into the 70s don't have whole games for many. And the ones that do exist, are often recorded off television broadcasts, so the quality stinks.

The whole '65 World Series is available, for example, but other than single games here and there, I don't believe other than '69 that any complete Series is available.

A lot of truth to this. They have to get those 3 minutes (at a minimum) of tv ads in between each half inning. Seventeen half innings per nine inning game ads a minimum of 35 minutes to the game. Add in pitching substitutions throughout the game and you're looking at full hour thrown on top of an already 2 1/2 hour game.

And FWIW, I'd rather watch a pitcher's duel than a slugfest game any day. Most boring MLB game I've ever been to was a twins game that the twinks won 8-4, and their were 5 dingers in the game.

365 What really bugged me was batters stepping out of the box after every pitch and readjusting their entire wardrobe. Total waste of time.

That used to annoy the hell out of me when I was pitching. Some guys would go through elaborate rituals, readjusting their wardrobes, their nuts, stretching their necks six times, etc., and for bonus points holding a hand up to the umpire while doing all this.

I'd stand patiently on the rubber until they finished their ritual, got in the box, and looked out at me expectantly.

At which point, I would take off my glove, turn toward CF, and slowly and elaborately rub up the baseball.

"See, I can make you wait, too."

366 I loathe the DH. In baseball, everybody has a defensive and an offensive position, and one of the beauties of the game is a player must master a number of different skills to succeed at the game. The DH is the first step along the road to platooning, which (IMHO) wrecked football.

As for statistics, yes, baseball is loaded with them. In a sense, though, statistics have diminished the game. For me, baserunning and defense were always the most enjoyable parts of the game, with a suicide squeeze bunt being the most exciting play I can think of. (Think of that marvelous photo of Jackie Robinson stealing home on Yogi Berra.) But the number-crunchers have reduced the game to home runs and strikeouts: boooorrrrring!

Which is another great reason to eliminate the DH. How many fewer hitters would Nolan Ryan hit if he knew he had to go up to bat the following inning? Okay, that's a poor example because there is probably no deterrent that would have kept him from plunking a batter. But you get my point.

The MLB Commissioner could shorten games a lot by prohibiting batters from wearing gloves. What was good enough for Mickey Mantle should be good enough for a .225 hitter in 2021.

376 I feel the same way. I'll watch a few games but I won't go to games or spend money on it. I just don't care that much.

Baseball has been dying a slow death before this BLM and SJW crap because their fans base was much older. The thing is, a good portion of those folks are conservative. They lost them and it isn't like young SJW are baseball fans. It will be a niche sport much sooner, like cornhole.

383 I loathe the DH. In baseball, everybody has a defensive and an offensive position, and one of the beauties of the game is a player must master a number of different skills to succeed at the game. The DH is the first step along the road to platooning, which (IMHO) wrecked football.

Posted by: Nemo at February 14, 2021 03:59 PM (S6ArX)

Exactly. The thing I like about baseball is that, generally speaking, it selects for normal-sized guys. A football or basketball team walking through a hotel lobby attracts attention. A baseball team does not. The average MLB (I figured this out once) is about 6'1" or 6'2" and weighs about 195-205 (IIRC). So, a good-sized boy, but not a freak.

390 Okay. I find the theory of poker interesting.

It is. Most commentary ruins it - because they imply certainty that most of the players simply do not have. Believe me, it's somewhat random - although, over time, the better players get the best of it. Long story short - and Mike Sexton really gets on my nerves with this - they'll call "bad" or "good" plays where the only way they could is by seeing those hole cards.

398 I find it interesting. But I'm only on the verge of playing with apps.
My suggestion would be Sklansky - On Poker.

WSOP is a social game. Even if you could see all the cards - and knew you were a four to one favorite going all in - the odds say you're gone in four hands. Maybe three. A guy like Ted Forester is a ring game man. If you're a four to one favorite - you go all in every time, and trust your bank roll to carry you through the bad runs.

FWIW - I expect to win four small bets an hour every time I sit down at a pro table, and I expect to stop in four hours. At a house game ? I expect to win it all. And that's why I can't play pro. I can't play long enough, and I can't win enough quick enough. The real deal guys can play eight to twelve hours, and they expect to win at least six small bets every hour.

399 What sounded the death knell for sports was TV. Before all the stupid rules, before all the SJW crap, before NFL couldn't tell what a catch or touchdown was, games were running 45 or so minutes longer than a few decades ago. All to cram in a few more commercials every chance they could. NFL team scores, 6 commercials, come back and kickoff already in air, downed in end zone, 4 more commercials, come back and ball is already snapped. How can you compare any player now with somebody that played 50 years ago when the current guy is getting an extra 1/2hr to 1 hour of rest during the game for TV time outs? Pro sports were complicit in allowing TV to stomp all over their junk with golf spikes in order to please corporate sponsors.
Go outside, enjoy your weekends with family, nature, shooting, home improvement, anything else. You'll be a happier person. (Oh, and you won't look nearly as silly as you do with some other man's name emblazoned across your back!)

403 I've been a Giants fan since I was born. My parents had Giants season tickets, which I inherited. Also had 49'er tix which have gone unused since that Day of Infamy with Kaepernick and the 1st kneeling. Done. I freaking hated not watching, esp. baseball. But.. and this is what's going to kill the sports, is I'm in that zone where as much as it killed me to stand on principle - it's become easier and easier every season as they continue throwing gas on the woke-dumster fire that is NFL & MLB now. Marketing and advertisers know this phenomena well - forced alienation from a product one used to like becomes one's new normal over time. Impact can be generational or even permanent.

Well it worked for me. Rusty had a lot of complicated care over the last few years, and it made the choice to keep him very easy, conflict free. With a 90% reimbursement rate, I didn't hesitate to plunk down the money for cardiology care. I didn't extend his life by painful days, but by several lovely years during which he was active and comfortable Kid 2 had dog insurance, and had positive experiences too.

406 MLB killed all the lowest level leagues- some had teams that were over 100 years old. Only a few years after demanding the towns upgrade stadiums- $10-15 million dollar "upgrades".

407 Not that this matters this late in the thread, but I was watching my alma mater's girls Basketball game. They were on the road, playing St. Mary's. The St. Mary's girls did not put their hands over their heart for the anthem (at least they didn't kneel!) but it was pretty nice watching my squad show respect.

1) pretty sad when a team showing respect to the National Anthem is noteworthy;
2) At least it's my team doing the right thing;
3) Not all sports teams are ruined.... yet.

Oh yes, we stomped the St. Mary's girls too.

Posted by: Vance at February 14, 2021 05:16 PM (DN0pc)

408 Been a Cleveland Indians fan until last year when they decided to go full on SJW and change the team name. The real damage is to the generational aspect of the sport. Fathers are no longer taking families or kids to the ball park and they are not watching the game together on television. Nobody is growing up today as a fan the way kids did a generation ago. Within 10 to 20 years they will have nothing left of a fan base and will hopefully implode. Serves them right.

409 I wld guess the MLB is doing that to shorten extra inning games cause the Nets were complaining about the length and canceling other shows. (I don't know if that happens I don't follow any of that.

So far in this century and most of the last the majority of our problems are derived from corporations interference.

They never should've been ruled a 'person' and they should not be able to fund representatives. Billionaires is bad enough there's only so many of those but corporations are like cockroaches and just as unpleasant when they crawl out of the woodwork.
