The Comment of The Week

269 "hard-fought" gains against the corona virus. Ha! What did these people do? They hid in their basements, while shutting down your businesses. They forbid you from practicing your religion, and threatened to arrest you if you gathered with your family. All the while, they never missed a paycheck, while having others do all their shopping and deliveries. Meanwhile, the virus does what it's going to do, irrespective of their mask and lockdown mandates.
"Hard-fought." Fuck off.

David Olive, President of Bluefield College is my newest hero. Respect the National Anthem, or there will be consequences. And by Jehovah, there was.

The players had knelt several times before games in January and February, at both home and away contests. After being warned about the practice, the players decided to stay in the locker room during the playing of the national anthem before an away game.

But before the game on February 9, the players decided to kneel for the anthem. College President David Olive told the coach, “there would be consequences for the actions of the players for violating the College policy.” Those consequences involved suspending the entire team and forfeiting a game.

In a statement, Olive said his decision to suspend the entire team was based “on my own awareness of how kneeling is perceived by some in our country, and I did not think a number of our alumni, friends, and donors of the College would view the act of kneeling during the anthem in a positive way.”

They have been warned. Will they listen? Or is there a big fucking mess waiting to happen?

Top US Nuclear Lab At Risk Of Major Wildfire, Warns Audit

An audit by the US Department of Energy, Office of Inspector General (DOE-OIG) found that the nation's top nuclear laboratory is not taking the necessary precautions to safeguard the facility from wildfires.

The audit, titled "The Department of Energy's Wildland Fire Prevention Efforts at the Los Alamos National Laboratory," raised concerns about fire management plans have not properly been followed and may pose a significant risk to the facility if a wildfire were to materialize in the area.

Entrepreneurship in the Kung Flu era.

If you see someone wearing a mask who seems particularly delighted, it might be because they paid for the pleasure of wearing a mask that smells like someone else's genitals or feet.

"Imagine browsing the aisles at a store and enjoying my scent," Cat's listing on Snifffr, the worn panty-selling site, says. "I’ll make your mask-wearing more enjoyable!"

For fetish item sellers, the pandemic is an opportunity for a new kind of item: pussy masks.

Cat, who sells panties and socks as well as masks on Snifffr, said she's been selling the masks for almost a year. "I think people like them because they’re able to enjoy a fetish outside of their home. I think it’s like a little secret only they know and it makes it risky and fun," she said. "It’s personally thrilling to me knowing that a mask I’ve had in my panties or shoes is now being worn on someone’s face and they’re enjoying it."

Once upon a time I was a smoker. Unlike vaping I never contracted chlamydia.

A woman just went viral on TikTok after describing how she got chlamydia in her lungs—not a typo—from a bad vape cartridge.

The video—which is now private, but was reported on first by BuzzFeed—shows TikTok user @germanshepardfanaccount playing the "put a finger down" game while describing her health ordeal. "So, put a finger down if in October you got super, super sick with pneumonia and you tried to tell everybody in your family that you felt like it was something more than that," she said in the viral video, per BuzzFeed. She reportedly "tried to tell the doctors and the hospitals that it was something more than that," pointing out that she had a fever for 13 days.

"Nobody believed you, they just kept testing you for COVID, testing you for antibodies, testing you for hepatitis, literally anything—everything was negative," she said. "Finally, it comes back that you have chlamydia in your lungs from vaping and smoking a bad cart." ("Cart" in case you're not familiar with vaping lingo, is "cartridge.")

The joys of social media. Seems a certain wife isn't too happy with her husband.

February 14 is usually a day to show your significant other how much you appreciate them, but TikTok user Gloria instead decided to remind her partner that she's not blind to his activity on social media.

In a video captioned 'What did you get your man for Valentine’s Day?', Gloria creates a styrofoam box and inserts wooden sticks, each bearing a photo of a different woman's picture he has liked on Instagram.

She says: "Since everyone is sharing what they got their significant other for Valentine's Day, I thought I'd share mine.

The joys of living in rural "Fly over country". Gig workers and carjackings.

A DoorDash driver named Jeffrey Fang was returning to his minivan in San Francisco after completing a delivery last week when he noticed a stranger in his car. After a struggle, he told a local news outlet, another person, an accomplice, got behind the wheel and drove away. Fang’s children, 4 and 1, were still buckled inside.

Four hours later, after a frantic search by neighbors and law enforcement, the minivan was found in another San Francisco neighborhood, with the children safe and unhurt inside.

Leave it to some Hoosier to think a RC Snow plow is cool.

If you grew up in the Midwest or any other snow-prone area, you probably remember pushing a shovel on the driveway or sidewalk. Wouldn’t it have been more fun (and less back-breaking) to have a remote-controlled snowplow? A Twitter user posted a video of an RC Unimog taking care of business quickly and efficiently, and there are likely quite a few of you who would like to have one for this weekend’s polar vortex.

While shoveling snow is a great workout, when you’re getting pummeled with the white stuff it’s a bit more strenuous than you may want on a day-to-day basis. Sure, you could pick up a robot snowplow with a boring personality for about $6,000, but apparently, companies like Hammacher Schlemmer are selling $100 RC snow plows with working lights and rubber tracks. If you want to go all the way, Germany-based ScaleArt is selling a 16-inch-long RC Unimog for about $2700. Add a plow attachment and it’s ready to go.

Not only do they taste good. They can play video games to.

Pigs can play video games, scientists have found, after putting four fun-loving swine to the test.

Four pigs - Hamlet, Omelette, Ebony and Ivory - were trained to use an arcade-style joystick to steer an on-screen cursor into walls.

Researchers said the fact that the pigs understood the connection between the stick and the game "is no small feat".

And the pigs even continued playing when the food reward dispenser broke - apparently for the social contact.

Usually, the pigs would be given a food pellet for "winning" the game level. But during testing, it broke - and they kept clearing the game levels when encouraged by some of the researchers' kind words.

"This sort of study is important because, as with any sentient beings, how we interact with pigs and what we do to them impacts and matters to them," lead author Dr Candace Croney said.

There are a number of ways to protest for civil rights. Do not attempt to do it the Genius Award Winner way.

A Florida Man arrested yesterday for indecent exposure told police that he was “protesting for civil rights by showing his penis to traffic,” according to a criminal complaint.

Cops charge that Riley James Cushman, 23, was spotted alongside a roadway in Palm Harbor, a Tampa suburb, with “his pants down to his knees holding his penis while facing traffic in a vulgar manner.”

Upon spotting a sheriff’s deputy around 3:30 PM, Cushman pulled up his pants and began walking away. When subsequently confronted by the cop, Cushman reportedly explained that he was “protesting for civil rights by showing his penis to traffic, but was now finished and wanted to go home.”

Cushman’s display resulted in his arrest for exposure of sexual organs, a misdemeanor. He was booked into the county jail, where he is being held in lieu of $150 bond. Cushman has pleaded not guilty to the indecency charge.

💝 Good Evening! 💘 Valentine's Evening! 💐

Arctic lockdown, day... I've lost track... now we're seriously snowbound, practically a whole inch of the stuff - on top of ice ice ice.

The end of the current ice age is predicted for a week from now. I don't know. I've seen that glacier moving here out of Kansas...

Milady and I are bundled up like hobos under a bridge. We're huddled together, warming our hands by the flaming pile of broken-up furniture and old Marvel comic books. Holding back the Claremont/Byrne run on X-Men... for now...

67 Excellent ONT, Mis Hum! And now, I'll veer only slightly OT, with a Front Line report from a live TV viewing, just now. TWO CONSECUTIVE ads for Flu Medicnes, just one programming segment apart. Both are warning that "Flu symptoms are similar to Covid, but not always the same.". Hawking some pricey upgrade to Theraflu, prescription only, of course.

I'm telling y'all here and now, they've thrown the switch on the "preparing the battlespace" to be winding down the Covid Panic, and they're "rediscovering" the Flu, after a 99% DECREASE in reported Flu cases all through 2020. What they're going to DO with said battlespace, remains to be seen. We have Smart Morons here that know tons more about what might "come after" the 'vid than I possibly could, and I'll beg those insights. - "vape cartridges" are not a normal vape thing. They're weed-related. They don't come from China.
- Almost all vape devices are made in China. No choice about that. When one arrives, I give it a good soak in alcohol. OK, not the electronic part, just the atomizer.

133 There's an as yet unidentified perp in Rancho Cordova ( outside Sacramento CA) who is Weinsteining in stores and then flinging his spooge at unsuspecting women.

There seems to be a racial aspect to all this.

Because it is a 'non violent' crime if he is caught a judge will just OR him. That's right no imposition of bail. And it is highly unlikely he will do prison time.

So i took pains to blame Democrats for this sad state of affairs on the local FB page. Oh boy did that stir them up because i 'politicize everything' and 'this isn't about politics'.

They ALL have mental illness.

Bet they all trace back to Bloomberg and/or Soros.

You all watch for those billboards, photograph 'em as you're able. We'll be seeing this as a huge push. No, not a mere "insistence" as to "safe storage". But, mandated, invasive Official Government Inspection and Approval of said "storage", with periodic Re-Inspection and Renewals. All with stout fees for the doing of course.

The main engines on the Space Shuttle Orbiter could do 109%. True story. There was a software upgrade that bumped it to 104% (for certain abort modes), then... 106? I think? Then finally 109% for a single-engine mode that would keep it outside of a dangerous velocity/altitude area of the envelope in case of a failure of 2 (of three) engines. Rather than rewrite all the procedures and redo all the training, and risk overlooking something and ending up with a potential conflict between two procedures, they kept the original rated thrust at 100%.

Couldn't do 110%, though. Only 109%.

159 BTW, for those who miiiiiight ever wonder, I only heat marijuana by convection vaping, not by using some nasty chemical juice. You grind your weed finely and put it in a device that blows hot air over it (usually at 340 to 375F depending on how you like it) which vaporizes the cannabinoids (at different temps) and it goes into a big balloon which you inhale. BTW, IIRC, marijuana itself begins to combust at 392F. Combusted plant material is where you get a lot of the bad stuff like benzene, but the scilentists here would know better. (Scilence!)

212 206 Ohhh there is some warming LadyL. We're still coming out of the Little Ice age IMO. The climate cultists are full of BS. And climate change? Well I like to tell people that damn right there is climate change; climate has been in flux for 4 billion years. Takes special kinds of idiots to decide that the temps in 1980 or whenever were just right, let alone think humans can keep temperatures at some ideal level by their actions.

If you need a ripe avocado for a recipe right now, you don't go to the market cause they'll be hard as a rock. You go to your local Mexican restaurant and ask them for a whole sliced one. It'll be a few bucks, but it will be perfectly ripe.

Sure. There's a lot of that. In Boston, you will find "scrod" on menus. Turns out that means "whatever unidentifiable white-fleshed fish did not sell at the docks under a known name." Doesn't mean it tastes bad, just that it's not famous. A lot of the famous stuff got fished out. Read the book called "Cod" for the most egregious example.

Then there's "Chilean Sea Bass," which is the new name for "Patagonian Tooth Fish."

If you want cheap, fresh fish, look for a large Chinese market in your area.

224 Nick Cage. Both at Braunig Lake and Calaveras Lake, (both are cooling basins for powerplants, South of San Antonio, TX.) (I don't know if either plant survived the Obummer era of closing power-plants?)..

Still, at both lakes, the Tilipia were a HUGE problem. They were brought in as they're algae eaters, and it was hoped they'd keep that warm and algae friendly water more clear of the noxious, O2 quelching scum. Well, they did, but they also multiplied so incredibly that they were outbreeding all other fish in the lake. Tilapia are "mouth breeders" where the male will swim around with the fertilized eggs in his mouth, until they hatch out and free him up to eat again. Hence, their eggs aren't subject to predation from other fish or critters. (cont..)

233 Tilipia (224 cont.) Tilipia are also not likely to be caught on hook n' line, in that they don't (or very seldom) eat much other than algae. What you do see on those lakes is a whole lot of Mexicans in boats, throwing cast nets at every shoreline and filling multiple huge ice chests with the things. No limits.

The powerplant operators needed to get every possible ton of Talapia out of the lakes, as they were literally clogging the cooling water inlets on a near-daily basis. Back then, (80s), they got little to no respect as an eating fish, because they weren't "noble" gamefish. But, good eating they were, and are.

252 Martini Farmer. Concur. Tilipia is best when breaded & fried, same as catfish. It's flesh is a bit too "soft" to hold up to seasoning and baking, as one would a flounder or halibut.

But hell yeah, Cajun Blackend Tilipia works, as does cooking it up and dicing it for fish tacos. It does respond quite well to various seasonings. Want to use it in soup? Pan sear it hot, in butter, get it fully cooked and "firm up" the flesh. THEN cut or shred it to put it into the soup. But never put raw Tilapia into the stock that you're making into soup. You'll just get Mush of Tilapia Slop.

Drink excessively.

356 The coldest I've ever been was in Ft. Greely, in February, on a roof doing an inspection. It was -45 or so, with a slight wind, raw as hell, dry as a bone. I exposed exactly no skin whatsoever, lasted about 20 minutes, took the photos and ran back inside. Even through a scarf, my nose hair froze up, my eyes ran nonstop, and I nearly choked for the dryness. It sucks it outta you, that's for certain.

Also, once in Fairbanks, it dipped just below -50 one night, I was staying in officers temp housing, and the fire alarm went off about 2 a.m. I figured it would be better to stay indoors and stay warm by the fire than go outside and freeze to death. Apparently the alarm went off whenever it got below about -50, no fire. So, the smart choice stayed warm.

So glad I can now send the younger ones up north for that kind of nasty work.

380 Cat story. The Cats New Dawn are locked into the Master Bedroom with Herself. They've got food, water, litterbox, but they're in there for their own safety. Reason being, the Porch Stray New Dawn is indoors, (on my lap) busy being Not Frozen in the wind and freezing rain.

He's got the Feline Leukemia virus, and we don't let the cats mix. Much hand washing and clothes laundry and very careful separation of foods, litterboxes and such. Anyway.. Porch Stray decides he "wants out", at the door, meow and scratch. So, I open the door a crack and..he takes enough steps for his front paws and head to be outside, stops dead in his tracks, does a 180 and is back inside. He is not a stupid cat.

Stubborn though. Took till his 4th try before he was convinced.

Did a little yard cleanup today. Raked up some palo verde straw, and put it in the wheelie bin. Those trees shed like crazy. And dug up the roots of three dead oleander bushes, and broke them down enough to go in the wheelie bin, too. Very easy digging in this soil.

I'd find another ice age a lot more convincing than us warming up by 3 degrees. The idea of us allegedly coming out of the Ice Ages circa 10,000 BC is supposedly settled science. But there seems to have been a revision, and thus perhaps there's only been a lull in the movement of polar vorticeses and the slow movement of the glacial ice.

424 will choose.. Bing says the average depth of NY Harbor in 1850 was 10 to 20 ft. deep. Nearly as shallow as Galveston Bay. (NY Harbor now averages 50 ft.) Point being, the ice that the truckers drive over on Ice Road Truckers runs about four to six ft. thick, and they'll run 100,000 lb. loads over it. I'd wager the NY Harbor Freeze of 1776 would've run about the same thickness, but in no way "froze solid". If it had, the inland flooding from the Hudson would've filled not only hundreds of miles of land, but hundreds of chapters of the history books. That river never stops flowing under the ice and out to the sea. Ever.

Coldest actual temps I've experienced, would be in the low teens, Cloudcroft NM on a ski trip. Coldest I've SUFFERED though, was 17, and was riding an '82 Gold Wing from San Antonio to Temple, TX. I was supposed to go apply sub-grade waterproofing (trowel grade) to a pre-cast utility box where the Temple VA hospital was expanding. Yeah, right. A six-ton, singular "dirt clod" (clay) had broken off of the pit-wall where they had lowered the utility box, and fallen against it. Anyone IN that side of the trench, would've been smushed like a bug. (trench shoring had not really then made it onto OSHA's radar). Job site unworkable, but at least it was only in the mid 20s when I rode home the next day, after THAWING in a couple hot tubs and long showers in the hotel, overnight. Brrr.

It's crazy. Back in Jan/Feb 2011, when I was living south of Austin, I timed it. That area spend 100 straight hours below freezing.

Now it's insane because though I live in the Panhandle and have seen single digits and below zero weather, I haven't seen it hanging around this long.

Hey, two beds can be pushed together sharing top sheet and blankets, so that still works (just a little dip in the middle).

Wife hates the fact that I can go to sleep very quickly, sometimes in less than 20 or 30 seconds. Downside is I'm a light sleeper most of the time, so she'll ask me a question after that 20-30 second period and wake me up. You'd think that after more then 20 years married, she'd know by now (then again, she might enjoy it.)

496 Governor Abbot has declared a state of emergency for the entire state of Texas. It's going to be 7 degrees in Dallas tonight, with 25 mph winds, and we're going to get between 6-8 inches of snow.

Last Thursday we received 1/10th of an inch of snow, and had a 100+ car pileup. Six were killed in that wreck. Eight lives were lost in 8 hours. This is what happens when you combine Texans and snow/ice.

I just got a text from my boss, who lives four minutes from work. ALL of us are expected to be at work tomorrow, no exceptions. If we are late, it will be okay, but no one is going to miss work.

If I total my car tomorrow, there's no way I'm going to get what it's actually worth from the insurance company. If I die trying to get there, well, it was worth it, if it meant making even one more "green energy" product to market.

These people know nothing of counter-steering, much less pumping the brakes. Some on my crew drive for more than an hour to get to work. We are going to get people KILLED.

526 IANAL, so i can't answer the questions, and i'd have to be a member of the TX bar to not be in trouble doing so. applying common sense*, i get the following:

the totaled car issue *might* be grounds, depending on TX law. argument was that you were forced by him to drive, under threat of unemployment, when you would have otherwise remained at home.

as for termination, Texas is an "at will" state, so, absent a particular codified exception, they don't need a reason to fire you. you'd have to find a local expert on employment law to get a definitive answer.

*common sense has precious little to do with law, litigation etc...

537 I was in San Antonio in the '84 snowfall, resulting in 16" of snow. "Shut Down" the city was an understatement. Shut down the entirety of Central Texas. I made the mistake of thinking my extreme cold weather gear would let me hike in to my then wife's hospital, so I could manage to get her home.

Then I learned that 16" of snow on level ground equated to 4 ft. drifts and higher when encountering uneven ground. A friend with a VERY high up 4x4 saved my ass, and hers. A close thing, but we did manage to bring home a quad stack of the finest sourdough pizzas known to man.

Pity, that pizza shop is long gone, drown in the bottles of misery and misfortune.

552 Even here, where we get serious amounts of snow, mother nature wins when the snow totals are high. And we have the equipment!

Ice storms? No messing around. Power lines and trees come down. That's pure danger. Not to mention driving on ice is pretty much impossible when the roads aren't properly prepared.

Posted by: My life is insanity at February 15, 2021 04:00 AM (sqAJS)

553 I woke up when I noticed our power had been off for an hour. 10 degrees currently, but I still have 3 rooms with nat gas burners (including one old wall furnace in a bathroom which I'm sure is very disapproved of by now) As I was turning those on, power came back on.

Lived in Texas for right at 40 years now, and this snowstorm is the coldest, heaviest, and deepest I have ever seen. And it's still falling. Looks like it's up to about 8" now.

Posted by: Tom Servo at February 15, 2021 04:00 AM (bxPTJ)

554 MLII,

No, the state of Texas does NOT have the equipment to handle this. Texas sees snow once about every five to six years.

They have what they have, and they've activated the National Guard (God help 'em), so, here we go!

Expecting power outages tonight and tomorrow. Nothing makes freezing more fun than doing it in the dark.

no, not really. At least the utility companies appear to be mobilized to fix breakdowns quickly, but it looks like most of the state is going to be shut down for the entire week. Just as this storm starts to fade, another new storm just as bad is scheduled to roll through on Wednesday.

583 Sigh. Can't sleep.

Saw some mentions of chickens, above.

Chickens are ok a-l-l the way down to -30, -40 real temp, not wind chill. Provision needs to be made for liquid water. The little dinos can be cold (down keeps 'em warm), they can be wet (and mad); they can't be cold AND wet. If they have a good roost bar so the feet are covered when they sleep, they'll be fine. Combson the cocks may suffer damage, but they do not need heat inthe coop. Heating a coop makes for more humid air. When they leave the coop - POW - frost-bitten comb and wattle.

B/c of the solar minimum, we have contingency plans for theflock if it gets below -30: They will go into the hoophouse along with a good, second shelter and lotsof straw. No needthis year, so far.

Yeah, I tried the acv for about a week; supposed to be helpful on gout too. No bueno. Gout is about too much acidity in your blood, causing urea to crystallize out (it forms needles when this happens) in your joints. Very painful, and on this topic I am a fuckin' authority.

Drink lots of fluids, take nsaids for inflammation, and the bouts usually pass within a couple of days.

That's my technique, anyways.

They took the time to sync up thousands of hours of silent 16 mm film from the spacecraft, plowed through the audio tape, the launch film, the press film, and can watch in real time with about 3 or 4 panels of video. It is amazing amount of work. So now it's possible to put context into the expressions on the CAPCOM guys, sitting at their consoles huffing on smokes and swilling coffee. Really cool.

The standard documentaries frankly aren't even close. They are a mish mash of disjointed stock footage.

Big news in Da Swamp: Ice! What the the hysterical TV weather and news people are calling a "major winter storm" is due to dump some freezing rain and drizzle on us into tomorrow. I had some errands to run this morning -- I'm off thanks to Mardi Gras, minimal as it is today -- but I've pared them down to grocery and some gasoline.

The worst should be to the north and west of the city. As long as we don't get downed power lines here, we should be fine.

I've driven in snow and a certain amount of ice when I lived in Denver, so I'm 1000% more prepared than most of the idiots around here . . . which is why I want to stay off the roads.

Stay safe. Whenever there is snow/ice in the warmer areas of the country the people here in No Ill say, "and those people don't know how to drive in it!!"
Sadly, we don't either. It's just that we have plow trucks throwing salt on the roads. If they don't get out and do their thing right away it's slip slidin' away all over the place.
The worst are the 4 wheel drive vehicles. They think that the car/truck will stop quickly on the icy roads.

637 -28 this morning. Wind chill of -42. Yippee!! Coldest day yet in this over week long cold spell. Luckily roads are clear and we don't have much snow. As long as I can drive safely I can take the cold.

Of course others point to Apollo 11, but by then it was simply a matter of time. Apollo 8 was an incredibly ballsy move by Nasa and the astronauts.

4WD or AWD just lets you get started. It doesn't allow you to stop faster.

There is absolutely no provision for dealing with ice on the roads here. Understandable, I guess, as it happens so rarely and is gone quickly when it does -- we're going to hit 63 on Wed.

Two of my favorite houses in that area were lit and decorated with the usual purple, green, and gold colors and lights. I chatted with the lady next door; she had a Buick Envision and was extremely pleased with it. "Best car I've ever had."
