The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

So, Disney gave Gina Carano the heave-ho for a mean tweet. Or, whatever they call posts to Instagram.

Ace covered this yesterday, but in case you haven't seen it, here is a screenshot of the instagram post that got Ms. Carano the left foot of fellowship from Disney. If you want to avoid clicking on the Twitter link, this is what it says:

Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors...even by children.

"Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?"

Notice how she didn't mention any political parties or ideologies, and it's pretty much a generic anti-hate warning message? Bedcause all she's saying is that people shouldn't hate each other because of their political views.

And these words are so dangerous that Disney basically unpersoned her?

Of course, it didn't really start here. There is a bit of context I haven't mentioned yet. Ms. Carano has been in the crosshairs of the woke mob for a long time.

A while back, some trans activist crybullies started harassing her for not posting her preferred pronouns in her Twitter bio. She refused to do so and the harassment continued. Finally she got fed up with their sh1t and changed her bio to this:

carano boop bop beep 01.jpg

In other words, she didn't apologize or otherwise back down, and went a step further and more or less thumbed her nose at the howling mob. Well, you know the rule about that, right?

“The devil...the prowde spirite...cannot endure to be mocked.”

― Thomas Moore

About the same time, she also posted, without comment, a larger version of this historic photo taken at a Nazi rally:

carano one lone man 01.jpg

...which made them even more angry. I can just see them jumping up and down with their faces all red and jets of steam coming out their ears. If you look through her timeline, though, there are number of these "one person against the mob" memes she has posted, without any accompanying text. However, she did post a quote from Thomas Sowell last week, so I'm sure that one was factored into Disney's decision. As did her complete absence of any genuflections to the 'woke' DIE (diversity, inclusivity, equity) pieties.

I'm guessing this quote from Braveheart Ms. Carano put up at the end of January probably did, too: "You think the people of this country exist to provide you with position. I think your position exists to provide those people with freedom." That's a not very 'woke' view of how a government should properly function.

So this is the context of her getting booted from Disney. That, and, as I mentioned, not backing down and not apologizing. I like this woman. She fights.

This is a pretty good tribute by The Critical Drinker, The Girl Who Wouldn't Back Down:

And one more thing: I'd be willing to bet that before all of this started, Gina Carano was not self-consciously, ideologically conservative (like, say, Rush Limbaugh, or, Ted Cruz or, I'd assume, most of us). But she might be now. The woke mob must want more conservatives. Because what they did to Gina Carano is how you get more conservatives.

Wednesday Who Dis: The lovely Karen Steele died too young, at age 57, another victim of cancer. Involved in charitable causes, in early 1970, she went on a handshake tour of service hospitals in the South Pacific, rather than accept a series that would have paid her $78,000. As a result, she lost her agent. How can anyone not admire her for that? She starred along with with Ray Danton in the movie he is probably most remembered for, The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond, about a vicious prohibition gangster. He died early, too, of kidney failure at age 60.

Too much of economic theory rests on labor theory of production and leave out the interplay between that theory and entrepreneurial activities. Economists by and large have simply assumed that demand will create supply including entrepreneurs.

The introduction of a transgender into an environment sort of causes people to take sides, because others then vocally affirm. Silence is considered not affirming; there seems to be no option of 'whatever, you do you without my involvement.'

i was surprised to hear Ingram earlier this week, and Styne last night bring it up.

now on ingram's show, the gop guy she asked point blank about why there's been no report released hem'd and haw'd and answered a completely different question and never circled back...

as for styne, he was asking in a monologue, so no answer was coming, he was only pointing it out.

so now i'm trying to figure out WHY it's suddenly allowed to be asked...

Got a love it - a lady points out a fact: that the Nazi regime used a propaganda drumbeat to cause the social death of the Jews as a prelude to the primary deportation and killing operations. That their social death was a necessary prerequisite for those operations to succeed.

So the people at whom she was directing that statement respond by saying "It is absolutely unacceptable to compare us to the Nazis. Destroy this person. Run her out of her career and silence her. She does not belong in public life in any capacity. She is an unperson."

89 Too much of economic theory rests on labor theory of production and leave out the interplay between that theory and entrepreneurial activities. Economists by and large have simply assumed that demand will create supply including entrepreneurs.

Well, it's hard to have demand when there is no supply. But, of course, I'm sure that's all hand-waved away, through claiming, "obviously, the demand isn't there, because the supply wasn't created."

90 For the most part, sci-fi died as a field when the Millenials began to write for it and overall book reading in culture tanked. So, in the absence of a large general audience for the books, Sci-Fi became other genres expressed as sci fi. Fantasy is one which is mainly recycling story lines from our ancestors and the better authors of the first wave of fantasy that cribbed the best stuff first. Another is the romance disguised as sci fi, and a smaller genre is either fantasy or sci fi detective stories. A few still try the grandiose Tolkien imitations but even injecting sex and gore plus historical fiction (cough George Martin) is not enough to sustain prolonged interest anymore.

For the most part, I find better reading material from 1960's backwards than from the 1970's forward.

There's a great takedown of it in the book Not Since Carrie: 40 Years of Broadway Musical Flops. It was supposed to be based completely on the movie, but went through so many rewrites that it only had the most tenuous connection to it.

Also, Allen was never as big a star as a show like that demanded, and his songs were cliche-ridden and fairly tuneless. I will admit to having a soft spot for it, though.

I am so very tired of people intentionally conflating taking your business elsewhere/boycotting with "cancel culture."

Cancel culture is banishing a person -- separating them from all connections to a community, including their job, their industry, their bank, their social media, their friends and even family. They literally want to cancel the target's existence.

That is wholly different from cancelling a streaming service, FFS.

To put it in their term: It is the difference between 'speaking truth to power' [in this case, Disney] vs. using every institutional power to destroy an individual's life.

Up until I canceled my Twatter account, I followed Carano. As others have posted, I'm surprised @jack didn't throw her out sooner. Is Pascal tweeting support for her or is he just staring right past her, pretending she doesn't exist?

He doesn't have to be reliant on the GOP, though. Take the AG, for example. Trump made a shitty pick - Sessions, and then backed it up with a shittier pick - Barr. I'd argue that Trump would have been better off with no AG at all. And that doesn't take the cooperation of the GOP. He would not, IMO, have as much an issue getting people to work for him without having them planning from day one how to stab him in the back.

Ditto, but I don't lament it as much as some. In 2012, we had nothing like the volume of data and information, nor the shocking number of examples of insider duplicity that we do now. In retrospect, it is obvious. At the time, it wasn't (for me, anyway). Romney just looked like a slick insider with some good talk and a few red flags (Romneycare, his business-crushing LBO/PE business) that I held my nose and voted through anyway. I didn't know that he was an utter shitweasel just like the rest of the insiders.

283 Mando is the rightful owner of the Darksaber, offered to give it to Bo-Katan who refused it? But who earlier accepted it when it was given to her before, but can't take it again this time?

Oh, and Boba Fett taking over Jabba's crime syndicate - that's supposed to be compelling? The guy was a bounty hunter, not a criminal mastermind. And what, Ahsoka is going after some dude from a sub-standard Clone Wars cartoon spinoff?

Hard pass on the MCU 2.0 that Disney is trying to pull off here. Buh Bye.

that was my biggest issue, Bo-Katan accepted the saber from Sabine, but all the clans agreed to it, so maybe that's the difference. but there's a pretty funny meme floating around about the mandalorian saying he's not the mandalor and the Mando's getting excited. kind of a life of brian feel to it.

I've got no clue about Boba, but you're right, him taking over Jabba's empire feels ALL wrong. just not seeing it.

During the off-the-record call, Ducklo made derogatory and misogynistic comments, accusing Palmeri of only reporting on his relationship—which, due to the ethics questions that factor into the relationship between a journalist and White House official, falls under the purview of her reporting beat—because she was “jealous” that an unidentified man in the past had “wanted to fuck” McCammond “and not you.” Ducklo also accused Palmeri of being “jealous” of his relationship with McCammond. (Palmeri had no prior relationship or communication with McCammond before calling her to report on the Playbook item, which was a story that she was assigned and had not independently pursued.)

319 And speaking of prayer (because I like to speak of it. -although I haven't been praying for Nikki Haley-here are some comments by R.A. Torrey who was a pastor and preacher and teacher and died in the 1920's but this comments are still valid: Here are some things he thinks Christians should pray for if they want to be successful in the Christian life:

1. Wisdom-"If any of you lack wisdom [ and we all do ]
let them ask God (James 1:5).

2. Strength- "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength (Isaiah 40:31)

3. The Holy Spirit-"your heavenly Father [shall] give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him" (Luke 11:13)

Rev. Torrey felt that if you were given the Holy Spirit in baptism or confirmation it didn't mean that it was to be a on or two time thing, but that it was like a fountain and that you could draw on it again again

This is from a book called "Your new life in God" which was a guideline for new Christians, although I think his advice can be for any Christian.

It was about placement of the Confederate flag on the Statehouse grounds.

Imma say this as I grew up in SC. The Confederate flag (yeah I know Battle Flag or whatever I know you know what I mean) is a Democrat emblem. It was in 1865, it was in 1965 when Democrat Fritz Hollings put it on the Statehouse dome. The first Republican governor of SC since Reconstruction pulled it off the dome and put it on the grounds, and Haley took it off the grounds and put it in the State Museum.

Haley is not covering herself with glory now, but no one should be going to bat for that Democrat symbol.

Fight me.

335 266 Main Street give it a rest. That is a tired trope.

The truth is that McConnell refused and with the entire GOP caucus backing him to let Trump have any nominee that was not Senate approved material. The Senate GOP majority was fully capable of going into recess to avoid having to vote on a controversial nominee that Trump favored. They did not.

The importance of Senate confirmations is that a lot of the administrative machinery behind rulemaking etc. is controlled by these positions and McConnell and co made Trump appoint former Bushies and favored GOPe legislative aides that would be trusted to backstab him. Trump's biggest issue was that he thought generals would be loyal and follow orders. Instead, his generals such as Kelly, McMasters, and Mattis were some of the most repellent.

The truth is that most of the ruling class including GOPe officeholders hates commoners of the US and either desire global governance or a global empire depending on their patrons. The pool of genuine American First is very shallow among our ruling class.

358 334 Imma say this as I grew up in SC.

Fight me.

363 And what darkly amuses me, but also makes me sad, about these great Christian saints (as in followers of Jesus, not canonized saints) is that whether they died in 1907 or the 1920's they talk about the "degenerate age" Dr. Henry Foster mentions it and he died in 1907. R.A. Torrey mentions it and he lived in the flapper age. The degeneracy of the 2020's would make their heads spin so fast now their heads would probably fly off their shoulders.

Much of the $15 wage is tied to labor's desire for contract raises based on minimum wages as a base plus x amount. The downside is that even some Dem senators recognize that a doubling of the wage in a recession just might turn it into a depression with unpredictable effects on their continued existence.

Almost all casual dining restaurants and a lot of bars would go out of business or have to adopt self serve if required to pay $15 per hour to waitstaff. The current bill does not exempt these establishments.

375 365 Main Street,
Do you actually know anything about succession in office when a position is vacant. It goes to the next in line, and if that is vacant to the permanent bureaucracy SES. All of them are Dems or GOPe. So McConnell had Trump over a barrel, either pick from the neuter list or risk having even more damage done to your administration by letting your enemies run the administrative departments.

So Trump could fire people all he wanted but was not permitted to put his people into place. If all the appointees were fired, then senior permanent SES would run the department to his detriment.

I suggest watching Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister if you want to know how bureaucracies and appointments work.

379 "Bring it on."! It's what I've said before. Let the Democrats have their way. Seems that no one else is really stopping them then when things get the way we know they will: terrible bad and maybe bloody, then maybe folks will realize what they are and put an end to them.

But too many said that would be harmful and I could understand the argument so I went a voted hoping above hope that we could strike twice and maybe fix things. But, no. People accepted the lies of the media and blamed Trump for everything and that he was mean and demented. And now look whats coming dopes.

Now we'll do it my way. No votes for GOP. No matter if they're nice guys the good has to get blamed along with the bad so as to get rid of all the bad. Once the party collapses and the Democrats find themselves at the end of their rope (heh heh) then maybe we can elect some good guys who mean what they say and say what they mean and let's stop corporate entities from giving anyone any money.

380 Do you actually know anything about succession in office when a position
is vacant.

Trump could have fired a different director every day - and multiple directors if he wished. The only check on that power would have been impeachment. And if he didn't have thirty four senators in his pocket on day one - he either played the game wrong or was destined to failure anyway.

But that's the difference between you and I. I look at how different choices might have produced alternate outcomes. You have a pre-disposition toward inaction. That is your default position on most topics. You are not alone in that regard.

Posted by: Main Street at February 12, 2021 12:30 PM (GJnhB)

381 You know, I could've foreseen this back when I was a junior in HS. I helped teach a elementary class the NEW MATH.

I knew then that they were complicating math more and not really teaching a simple and convenient way of mathematics and If I'd had experience I would've seen where it would lead and why they were doing it.

All these 'NEW' methods of teaching have one goal really. Too ruin young minds and make them susceptible to unreason and to also frustrate the students so they give up trying to learn and this is what we wind up with; ignorant and people who can't reason, can't think and have no thoughts of their own. They rely on others for everything and obey those folks without question.
