LOL: Woke Super Bowl Sees Plummeting Ratings

Gee I wonder why.

The Super Bowl 2021 ratings are finally out -- and they're not great.

CBS announced on Tuesday morning that 96.4 million viewers watched the game across all their platforms, "including the CBS Television Network, CBS Sports and NFL digital properties, Buccaneers and Chiefs mobile properties, Verizon Media mobile properties and ESPN Deportes television and digital properties."

...

Concerns in the sports media industry grew when the ratings for the game were not released on Monday, which is highly unusual.

"Super Bowl numbers are still being processed and verified," Nielsen said in a statement on Monday night. "We anticipate that final viewing figures, which will include Out Of Home (OOH) viewing, will be available to the media (Tuesday)."

Not only are they now including who watched on the internet, but the ratings system was recently changed to make televised sports seem to be more well-watched. Nielsen began including estimates of how many people watch games in bars, rather than just in homes. Those are the OOH, Out of Home, figures that are now being included in the totals.

Previous years' ratings didn't include those viewers -- though they were watching in bars in previous years, too.

62 Repost - I am not going to judge people who choose to watch. Consider this, however.

The Off Button: Stop living on their terms

Lastly, and perhaps it is just a personal note, it is past time for us being to be producers of experiences and not consumers of experiences. Media requires only that you sit passively and absorb events as they happen to you. Most Americans watch people play sports, watch people go fishing, watch people race cars, watch people fix cars or build things. Few go out and do them, as evidenced by the average American watching nearly four hours of TV every day. It's an astronomical amount of time, and one the right has little use for. It supports people who hate you and allows the people you hate to influence your mood and culturally impact the very people you want to protect. Take a step back and not only get a lot of extra time on your hands, but quiet your mind a little bit. Happy and calm people are convincing and persuasive, not screaming, agitated and stressed out people.

So, by getting into the "pillow business" Hogg didn't mean actually building a ground-up business, but rather grift money from an oligarch to provide branding support to an already-extant business.

He'll fit right in with the other D.C. grifters. Watch the media hold him up as the counterpart to Lindell, who built his business up from the ground floor.

68 The comical thing about Hogg is that he doesn't seem to realize that he's actually in competition with the Chinese and Indian textile plants, who make most of the pillows sold. Lindell has been successful by making a good product and also running a clever marketing campaign targeted on a specific market segment. There's no way Hogg can duplicate that.

imo - hogg's crusade has nothing to do with pillows. He/they are not attempting to tank the pillow sales of Mike Lindell, I don't even think it's the unwavering support Lindell has shown President Trump.

I think it's because Mike Lindell is a very successful spokesman for the power of prayer, in both words and actions, his millions to Christian movies and his constant presence at country-wide prayer activities.

They bend the knee to the Government-Medical Complex and give them what *they* want, which would be a nearly-nonexistent bump, and the narrative "people stayed home, did not go out into dangerous large gatherings, or throw huge parties in their homes."

Either tons of people watched out-of-home, or people respected Fauci / Biden / Whitmer / Newsom / Cuomo's demands.

This is the continuation of a trend. In 2012, more than 111 million people watched the game in America.

In 2021? 96 million. That's a drop of almost 15% over the past 9 years. The NFL is shrinking, and it's getting so bad that the salary cap is decreasing for the first time ever (I think). Their power to influence is diminishing, and, more importantly, their ability to manipulate based on inherited success is lessening.

Posted by: Revenant at February 09, 2021 01:22 PM (9BfnT)

In a way, I'm actually impressed with the innate grifting skills that Hogg is exhibiting here. He went from not actually being at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas HS at the time of the shooting to becoming one of the faces of the victims. He then wangles his way into Hahvahd even though he didn't have the grades, and now he's grifting off Bloomberg to set up a Potemkin pillow company.

I'm afraid that this guy could actually go very, very far in this new USA we have here.

163 89 Quint, the coming death of big advertising is going to be most amusing. When no central concept of a mass consumer market exists, then the only acceptable marketing is niche marketing which big advertising sucks at. Same issue is happening in on screen entertainment and media.

The massive profits of these industries was rooted into the idea that advertising or a news/entertainment concept could be developed once and sold to many consumers.

Destroy the glue that holds civilization together, then everyone becomes more and more tribal which means mass marketing, mass media, mass politics, increasingly becomes an unmanageable mess.

The halftime show by U2 after 9/11 was pretty good. i have always thought the NFL doesn't know their audience. Sure they knew it but they hated it, they wanted the next best thing. There are so many main stream bands, country bands, etc, that would blow the roof off. But the NFL has been trying to be cutting edge for decades, even though that was not their fan base. I hope they realize soon that their base cares more about soccer, Euro Football, or whatever they are calling it these days.

346 287. Grammie that has become my philosophy as of late. I think a lot of people watched the SB because of the story behind the teams. Brady at 45 in a new team. His retired teammate coming out of retirement to join up with him. KC with a concussed QB who refuses to quit when everything is against them and usually prevailing. You can simply watch the game and turn off everything else.

At some point it's just too bloated to matter. No one knows what they do, and they don't actually do much of anything except collect a paycheck. One answer is just to not give pay raises during the coming inflation, to make it a less attractive career option. Then as the revenues decline due to debt service, start cutting by not filling vacant jobs first (hiring freezes), then start real cuts.

****

This whole thing is battlespace prep for when Trump keeps winning the election fraud cases. He's apparently won 2/3rds or so of them that have been allowed to go to court, and there are more on the way.

Make it so he can't hold office (waves hands in magical way) because Congress says so, and since Biden is already IN office, he's the only logical president. Plus the SCOTUS will never overturn it, so they'll stay out of the entire thing. Poof! Trump's a doo-doo head who said pussy and ineligible to be president.

The science is settled.

462 405 rhomboid,
Not really optimistic but simply observation of trends in history. Societies are kind of like fault lines in plate tectonics--stable except for tremors with scant movement. Then, all of a sudden, the plates rip apart. Avalanches, etc. demonstrate similar non-linear behavior once the party gets started.

Stagnant self serving bureaucracies have been around since the dawn of civilization but communication advances on the other hand has more or less greased the fault lines in society so stability is becoming more and more fleeting in a civilization and society.

Bureaucracies are downstream from society and an unstable society will end up crushing the political system and derivative bureaucracies. We are not in the Russian Revolution but more like the end of the Soviet Union.

489 Mark, this is north of Couer d'Alene but I recommend Lake Pend Oreille. I only spent a couple of hours there (the trail I wanted to hike was closed off), but it was incredibly gorgeous even on a cloudy late spring day.

I learned to water-ski on Coeur d'Alene when I was there for scout camp. Absolutely gorgeous lake. There was a big white supremacist camp just down the road from scout camp, so there was that.

491 456 Caesar, depends on covid bill, from all reports, the infighting is between the new left woke folks wanting individual payments versus the establishment dems wanting to payoff state and local govt debt. It is a sign of late crisis when essentially all future state and local finances are being tied to the national government borrowing and spending. The circuit breakers are being jerry rigged around so that the debt bomb will devastate the state and local governments too along with the feds.

Afraid I can't tell if you are being serious or kidding. In New England (at least) the FBI is notoriously corrupt. They had agents working as hit men for the Bulger gang for crying out loud. Not to mention framing innocent men for murder(cost us taxpayers $105 million to settle with the two survivors and the families of the other two) and straight shooter Robert Mueller trying to keep the men from getting parole, knowing they were innocent, when he was in Boston.

And because the NFL pissed all over their fans, they can't even make that kind of a matchup into ratings gold.

What's gonna happen when you don't have any sort of dramatic stakes?

544 JM and TJM,
The dystopia in Brazil or even 1984 demonstrate a point in time but historically bureaucracies rise and fall just like any other institution because they are downstream from society and culture. The historic vice is that true believing only lasts for a generation or so, the second generation genuflects but does its own little deviance, and the third generation runs a hollow institution run primarily for a grift. Then the whole thing collapses or is replaced and it starts all over again.

FDR did his thing by setting up new bureaucracies and assignments and made his bureaucrats compete against each other. It worked for him, if not for the country as a whole.

560 >>>Yes. Sports should be good and important and it would be very helpful if they weren't politicized.

It isn't "very helpful". It's essential to their ordered nature. Game playing in general is a simple vanity, spending billions on professional sports leagues only has some veneer of justification when they act as cultural touchpoints that cross racial/social/political lines bringing people together.

You lose that, you make professional sports into just another social/political/racist institution and the time and money you spend on playing games and watching others play games can no longer in any way be justified. Which means you should treat it like a bad habit. And try and quit if you can.

562 539, Duncananthrax,
Go old school, send faxes as most offices still have one. USPS Letters get sent to the irradiation facility and arrive weeks later.

You can also go by and speak your concerns to district offices either by phone or fax as well.

If feeling particularly vengeful, look up their last campaign treasurer, counsel, etc . and let them have an earful. Speak truth to power to their core supporters instead of the head honcho--they have less insulation.

563 Here's a tip.If you need to fly somewhere, under, say 500 mile, on a regular basis, visit your local fbo and chum up with some of the pilots. It's not fare, it's gas money.

564 I would just love to see the "real-time" ratings to see if the biden bit, the poet, and the BLM national anthem led to immediate declines.

565 NFL/NBA/MLB hate their white audiences. Or maybe its their MAGA audience. Anyway, they ain't going to change unless they are hit in the pocketbook.

566 Sports is just part of the Entertainment INDUSTRY - its about making the wealthy owners some $$$ and pushing their politics. That we get some "entertainment" out of it, is simply by chance.

567 Mark, I just remembered another place I liked in north Idaho: Harrison. Pretty views of Lake CDA and the Trail of the CDA runs through there. What stuck with me most was a historical marker for the shingle mill smokestack base. This mill burned down at least 5 times, I believe. It reminded me of the swamp castle in Monty Python & the Holy Grail, lol.

568 A family member did an internship in a Senate office, and had to handle the phones from constituents.

Simply put, there was nothing that anyone on the phone could say or do that would generate a reaction. The most you could hope for was to be calling about a discrete issue that the intern was told to take tallies on (number of calls for / against). Beyond reporting those tallies to another staff member, the constituent calls were disregarded entirely.

Its a very different situation if you go to the Senate office and can credibly say that you drive donations, or can deliver (or remove) a whole block of voters. That kind of approach has more clout. Individual calls do next to nothing.

569 Super Bowl and advertising are dead, like everything else and MFM is running the country.

570 First SB I never watched.

Watched Greenland instead. If a french-fried and crumpled planet Earth, almost totally denuded of vegetation and forcibly depopulated, is of interest, this is the movie for you.

571 The terrible number was that households watching dropped under 40% for the first time since 1990. Given the nature of the game, 110-115M viewers should have been watching.Sucks to be NFL-BLM.

I'm pretty sure SB 1 had a marching band.

573 advertisers should be suing their asses off because the value of those ads is based on the number of eyeballs that watched them...

Article last month, the one about all the companies not advertising this year? Noted that ad prices were lower this year. They knew they'd have fewer eyeballs. Be even fewer next year. NFL is in real trouble but seems to only know how to make things worse.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 09, 2021 02:14 PM (KZzsI)

If the NFL doesn't get a certain number of eyeballs it has to pay advertisers back.

Posted by: Oldcat at February 09, 2021 03:08 PM (eoQWY)

574 The only metric that really matters is how much companies are willing to pay for SB 2022 ad time.

575 Where was a bar open? If people aren't in bars, they're not watching TV in bars. And here in beutiful downtown Los Angeles County, they had just reopened outdoor dining--but said that no televisions would be allowed. So there you are having a burger and beer on some restaurant's patio--but you won't be watching the game.

And I hate to break to Nielson--but nearly all of the Super Bowl ads sucked big time--as hard as Kamala Harris. And as for the Springsteen Jeep commercial--well let's just say that anyh desire on my part to buyi a Fiat Chrysler Jeep product was gone by the time the ad was over.

I could fix the Biden infomerciall--just hit the mute button while the geezer was speaking. And I spared myself the half time show---there hasn't been a decent one for 30 years, so it was time to take the dog out to poop. That was a better show than what was on offer from the Tampa halftime.

576 Including people who didn't watch but thought about watching but did not really watch also anyone who heard about the superbowl.
