Saturday Morning Coffee Break

Of course I was exposed to nicotine and caffeine.

New research finds caffeine consumed during pregnancy can change important brain pathways that could lead to behavioral problems later in life. Researchers in the Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) analyzed thousands of brain scans of nine and ten-year-olds, and revealed changes in the brain structure in children who were exposed to caffeine in utero.

The Saturday Morning Joke

Bob lived in California and was a lifelong environmentalist and was defeated in the House of Representatives election. He was sick of the world; of Covid-19, Brexit, Russian belligerence, global warming, racial tensions, and the rest of the disturbing stories that occupy media headlines.

Bob drove his car into his garage and then sealed every doorway and window as best he could. He got back into his car and wound down all the windows, selected his favorite radio station, started the car and revved it to a slow idle. Four days later, a worried neighbor peered through his garage window and saw him in the car. She notified the emergency services and they broke in, pulling Bob from the car.

A little sip of water and, surprisingly, he was in perfect condition, but his Tesla had a dead battery.

This is to be expected from a California Democrat.

Rules? Of course there are rules!
1) No pulling the 'ettes hair.
2) No running with sharp objects.
3) Chew with your mouths closed.
4) Be nice to one another.
5) Have a great weekend!

I quit in my early 20s. But sometimes, I get a whiff of second-hand smoke and it is so pleasant--scent memories. Fresh smoke on a cold day takes me back to certain days and friends in high school. I just enjoy it and move on.

I'm fortunate that I don't have strong addictions to things (well, except potato chips, but that's another matter). It wasn't hard for me to quit.

I'll be off shortly to pick up the new doggeh, a 9mo Russell Terrier, from the breeder.

I still find the inability to find a small rescue dog to be annoying, but the choice of senior chihuahuas or "small" terrier mixes that look exactly like pitbulls made it impossible. Also, over the past 4 weeks I "applied" for dozens of small dogs, but was disappointed every time as they went to others...and I was redirected to pitbulls, as if I needed to prove something to the broads running the rescues. Mostly I got no notification as all, but saw the "adopted" line added to every small dog within about 24h.

Antifreeze... we've got cats and unless what I've got or can get is nontoxic I'll have to go with something else. Teflon has been suggested as being very good for this purpose.

I'm south of Louisville, not far from Fort Knox. We just went through a moderate ice storm. I have about a quarter to half inch of ice on every surface that's not covered. That accumulation is over a few days and not all at once.

108 As for me and smoking: I grew up around my mother's Pall Malls. Turned me off to cigarettes, despite my ficiional heroes James Bond and Ellery Queen both being slaves to the weed. Sometime in '84 I got the notion to try a a pipe. I liked the scent and the mild physiological lift it gave me, and the pipes were gorgeous sculptures in wood and were fun to collect.

When the Nicotine Nazis began shutting down smoking in bars and restaurants, I gave it up. Also because it's too hot most of the year to wear a jacket in which I could carry the pipe and pouch.

166 "I get headaches if I go over 24 hours without it. An ex-girlfriend

Going cold turkey on a drug as powerful as caffeine is not a good idea. A better approach is to taper off. I mix caffeinated with de-caffeinated coffee when making my morning brew (Zabar's in New York sells a very nice whole bean decaffeinated coffee). By gradually increasing the ratio of decaf in my morning blend, I was able to cut back a lot, and without the pain of sudden withdrawal.

A bonus is that if I really need a boost nowadays - say, if I'm tired but I have to drive a long distance - one cup of ordinary caffeinated coffee is all I need: it's like drinking rocket fuel.

I agree. Unfortunately, here in Kenosha, it's cold (single digits) and snowing, with a brisk wind and 80% humidity. That cold, damp wind cuts like a knife. If I were a skier, I'd be outside shushing around right now, since the snow is the light powder that skiers love; but I'm not, so I won't.

Both parents smoke pot routinely and don't mind if the kids do.

Gee, I wonder why the kids have a lack of ambition and motivation? Could it be that, after being the cool, hip, liberal, permissive parents-as-friends, my SIL and brother are finding it hard to act with authority? That smoking pot with and around your kids is NOT a grood idea?

It sounds interesting and I'd love to see it at a car show, but I'm really puzzled at the swap. It's neat, and if I had $650M to play with and not worry about money I'd probably buy it just because it's probably the only instance in the world, but I don't "get" it. You're not gaining much power, and zero buildabilty, over stock or crate engines that you could drop in, there are probably very few aftermarket performance options (unlike everyday Ford engines), and you get what is more than likely a precious, delicate, temperamental engine in an otherwise common and reliable Mustang GT.

Still, though, I like that he did it.

According to the ad an owner of the GT had an option to purchase a spare engine for two years (IIRC), and that's what was put in the Mustang.

It's a rare bird, but it seems like a pointlessly complex and delicate rare bird when you can probably spend $10K and get 1000hp out of a three valve dinosaur that you get out of a wrecked 2006 Mustang GT for $400 at the junkyard.

Haha, got you beat there. We used to drive down the interstate at 70 miles an hour in an old 1950s pickup truck, (this was the 70s) and my brothers and I would be standing up in the back, looking up over the cab. It was fun as hell then. Now, I shudder to think what would have happened if my dad had an accident.

But it was fun as hell.

434 89 If you further break that down into age 0-14 and age 15-17 almost all
of the gun deaths are in the 15-17 group, and a if I recall correctly
substantially more than half of those are gang-related homicides as
opposed to suicides or accidents. They love to lump in the newborns and
infants so they can say "Guns are killing babies!!"

436 Been to those three, and also Tahachipi and Tonapah. Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made, and I've driven the back roads so I wouldn't get weighed. Most of that statement is true.

That GT engine is has cast aluminum block & heads, and weighs about 1/3 less than it's cast-iron counterpart. 550 hp, in ul-altered form, and 700hp only requires a smaller primary pulley and +2 lbs from the turbocharger. So, his '07 Mustang will have a more balanced chassis, and more power than the suspension is likely to enjoy. The current Mustang comes with an Independent Rear Suspension, which would greatly aid the handling of the car. Transplants are possible, but difficult to accomplish.

442 "We used to have Monkey Ball fights"

Roman candle wars. Lucky we had goid reflexes.

But we caught a field on fire and I tore my hands and arms up climbing through barb wire to put it out.

Which was even stupider. I stripped my shirt off to lash at now circling brush fire, like I had seen in the movies. Which necessitated ANOTHER climb back through barb wire and safety. Luckily the parents were out of town, so my best friend helped me treat my wounds with Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol.

I think I settled my debr for that particular stupidity

443 A friend of mine had his shirt catch fire during a Roman candle fight. I don't know what the hell he was wearing, but he ended up having to get skin grafts to repair the damage.

======================
Hold my beer: A friend of mine had a pack (12) bottle rockets in his front pocket and was walking around, firing them out of his hand. The whole pack went off, and he almost burned off his wanker. The scar on the inside of his leg was pretty gross.
