New research finds caffeine consumed during pregnancy can change important brain pathways that could lead to behavioral problems later in life. Researchers in the Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) analyzed thousands of brain scans of nine and ten-year-olds, and revealed changes in the brain structure in children who were exposed to caffeine in utero. Rules? Of course there are rules! 1) No pulling the 'ettes hair. 2) No running with sharp objects. 3) Chew with your mouths closed. 4) Be nice to one another. 5) Have a great weekend! That being said, I did take up cigars, but I only smoke one a day, typically before dinner with my cocktails. I'm thinking of switching to after dinner, but I'd have to bathe before bedtime as my wife hates the smell. I also smoke outside, and currently it sort of sucks to be outside.

Good morning!
I'll be off shortly to pick up the new doggeh, a 9mo Russell Terrier, from the breeder. I still find the inability to find a small rescue dog to be annoying, but the choice of senior chihuahuas or "small" terrier mixes that look exactly like pitbulls made it impossible. Also, over the past 4 weeks I "applied" for dozens of small dogs, but was disappointed every time as they went to others...and I was redirected to pitbulls, as if I needed to prove something to the broads running the rescues. Mostly I got no notification as all, but saw the "adopted" line added to every small dog within about 24h. Posted by: CN at February 13, 2021 09:30 AM (ONvIw) 84

As for me and smoking: I grew up around my mother's Pall Malls. Turned me off to cigarettes, despite my ficiional heroes James Bond and Ellery Queen both being slaves to the weed. Sometime in '84 I got the notion to try a a pipe. I liked the scent and the mild physiological lift it gave me, and the pipes were gorgeous sculptures in wood and were fun to collect.
When the Nicotine Nazis began shutting down smoking in bars and restaurants, I gave it up. Also because it's too hot most of the year to wear a jacket in which I could carry the pipe and pouch. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at February 13, 2021 09:36 AM (lSpWa) 109

Staying so cold here in NE Texas for so long my heat pump is falling way behind. Used to be in the winter you had to crank the heat up to 74+ degrees to get the "auxiliary heat" indicator to come on. Today it came on at a 70 degree setting.
I expect by the end of next week it will be down to 64 degrees when the indicator comes on. My electric bill is gonna be sky high this month. Posted by: Mister Scott (formerly GWS) at February 13, 2021 09:37 AM (JUOKG) 113

"I get headaches if I go over 24 hours without it. An ex-girlfriend
kicked caffeine and went through the same thing-- raging headaches for about three days." Going cold turkey on a drug as powerful as caffeine is not a good idea. A better approach is to taper off. I mix caffeinated with de-caffeinated coffee when making my morning brew (Zabar's in New York sells a very nice whole bean decaffeinated coffee). By gradually increasing the ratio of decaf in my morning blend, I was able to cut back a lot, and without the pain of sudden withdrawal. A bonus is that if I really need a boost nowadays - say, if I'm tired but I have to drive a long distance - one cup of ordinary caffeinated coffee is all I need: it's like drinking rocket fuel. sunny day when the temp is 10 degrees with no humidity vs a 40 degree damp overcast day. Especially after a big snowfall. Sunny weather with a lot of snow on the ground is beautiful." I agree. Unfortunately, here in Kenosha, it's cold (single digits) and snowing, with a brisk wind and 80% humidity. That cold, damp wind cuts like a knife. If I were a skier, I'd be outside shushing around right now, since the snow is the light powder that skiers love; but I'm not, so I won't. Posted by: Nemo at February 13, 2021 10:01 AM (S6ArX) 189

You know, the crazy days make me wonder: how much of the science on quitting smoking and drinking during pregnancy was do to a desire to get people to stop having kids. Pregnancy never seemed like a picnic in the best of times from my point of view (just from observation) add in nicotine withdrawal and lack of other stress relief from drinking, and.... Well, all I am saying is manipulated science to encourage or discourage other behaviors is not so far fetched.

My SIL is fretting because her 2 children, 19 and 17, lack any motivation. The eldest doesn't want to go back to school for either an associate or bachelor's degree, is content to continue working as a sales clerk and didn't get hired by Amazon because she flunked the drug test. Both parents smoke pot routinely and don't mind if the kids do.
Gee, I wonder why the kids have a lack of ambition and motivation? Could it be that, after being the cool, hip, liberal, permissive parents-as-friends, my SIL and brother are finding it hard to act with authority? That smoking pot with and around your kids is NOT a grood idea? I bit my tongue until it bled, talking to her. So some guy in the Atlanta craigslist has a 2007 Mustang that he's put a Ford GT (their supercar) engine into. It sounds interesting and I'd love to see it at a car show, but I'm really puzzled at the swap. It's neat, and if I had $650M to play with and not worry about money I'd probably buy it just because it's probably the only instance in the world, but I don't "get" it. You're not gaining much power, and zero buildabilty, over stock or crate engines that you could drop in, there are probably very few aftermarket performance options (unlike everyday Ford engines), and you get what is more than likely a precious, delicate, temperamental engine in an otherwise common and reliable Mustang GT.
Still, though, I like that he did it. Posted by: Mr. Gray 508 at February 13, 2021 11:11 AM (XTk1T) 417

That GT engine is has cast aluminum block & heads, and weighs about 1/3 less than it's cast-iron counterpart. 550 hp, in ul-altered form, and 700hp only requires a smaller primary pulley and +2 lbs from the turbocharger. So, his '07 Mustang will have a more balanced chassis, and more power than the suspension is likely to enjoy. The current Mustang comes with an Independent Rear Suspension, which would greatly aid the handling of the car. Transplants are possible, but difficult to accomplish.
