Re-Education Camp Cafe: Flashback 1983 Edition

First a news flashback, then trailers from 1983 (second one: Doctor Detroit), then TV shows that debuted in 1983, followed by three videos compiling videos that ran in 1983.

Finally, the top 30 songs of 1983.

Recap of 1983.

Did you see the Burger King commercial at 2:40?

Recognize the girl?

Recognize the boy?

I'm not sure that all the dates here are right. The boy in that commercial would be in a major movie this very year. (Hint: Private school, hot mom. More than a hint: here.)

Yet he was also shooting Burger King commercials, just months before?

The girl, meanwhile, would be in one of the biggest movies of the following year. She must have been shooting it while this ad was airing.

Movie trailers from 1983.

I forgot that 1983 was the "Battle of Bonds," with Sean Connery coming back to do a non-canon remake of Thunderball, as well as Roger Moore starring in the main Bond franchise's Octopussy. The trailer they use for Never Say Never Again must be a fan-made one, a fake trailer, because it features the James Bond Theme. This production was not allowed to use any of the material from the EON main franchise, especially the theme.

And I've really got to see Brainstorm one of these days. That's a movie I've sort of slightly wanted to see since it was out in theaters. But I never wanted quite enough to actually watch it, even when it was on HBO literally every six hours.

I just saw The Dead Zone for the first time this month. That was released in 1983 too, apparently. It was... boring. It really didn't do much besides present the bare bones of a very basic what-if-you-could-see-the-future premise.

New TV shows of 1983.

TV commercials from 1983, here,
and here,
and here.

Top 30 songs of 1983.

Depressing bonus: Compare 1983 with today.

The flu vaccine is only good for a year because a very different mutation of the flu will inflict the nation next year. By the time the flu mutation you were vaccinated against comes back around, it's been several years since your body last saw it.

I could understand it if the virus were rapidly mutating, but so far, the mutations have been really slow.

I make this same point all the time. It makes no sense to talk about "immunity" and "vaccination" in such fleeting senses. There is a reason that we have not, heretofore, "vaccinated" for common cold viruses. Because people would call bullshit at the inception. And yet, 40-60 million people, I'd estimate, are convinced that China virus is gonna kill you dead.

192 Spring 1983 was the last year we had the NHL in Denver until 1996. My sister worked for United Bank, who had a box and rinkside seats. No one went to the games, so I got to go to many for free. I also got to see the pitiable Colorado (Hockey) Rockies beat Wayne Gretzky and the Oilers. And then the season ended, they moved to Jersey where they remain.

I was a grad student at University of Chicago at the time, and they show up at a big party there - which there arent any, really and it is 55 blocks south of the bus station they are going to and the El they take and have the gang fight on is many, many blocks inland at that point. The tower they hide in is right on the lake, about where the river hits the lake. They did have to get a ride from the nice guy to get from U of C to lower Wacker where Thor had his garage, but it is almost impossible to get onto that street from the South by the lake - it follows the river across the north side of downtown and west side of downtown and is underground.

281 The vaccine isn't a vaccine.

Which is presumably why it doesn't give you much in the way of resistance.
The
bigger question though then is why? Because India already seems to have
herd immunity which means the rest of the world is about to get it
anyway.

Posted by: 18-1 at February 08, 2021 08:23 PM (qlFIA)
I'd like to know why India has herd immunity, which is either caused by cases or "vaccinations" that actually work to cause immunity. Given their population, I would expect cases would be a bloodbath, given how deadly the China virus is. Do they have some naturally occurring immunity to China virus?

370 1983- my last year as a single woman.Married Michael the next year.
Was on the road every three weeks doing PR at department stores (remember them?) for AT&T. I loved it; I got to visit other cities and stay in nice hotels. I scored three free roundtrip flights to Hawaii for two on all the miles. I grew up in a cold flat tenement on New York City's Lower East Side. When I walked into my room at the Beverly Hills Hotel and saw the TV and the phone in the marble bathroom, the first thing I did was call my parents...from the bathroom. With the TV on.

383 After 6 crummy years, my life began anew at 32 in 1983. I'd spent a year organizing a union, a year trying to negotiate a first contract, a year on strike, a year unemployed, 2 miserable years as p.r. head of a police union and a year at a bankrupt weekly newspaper ("Wait till Monday to cash Friday's paycheck") before landing my dream job at a daily. The only joy in those years came with the birth of my oldest daughter.
The new job saved our marriage, and we raised a beautiful family. We didn't really get out of the hole until 1990, but 1983 was the seminal year in my life.

A convoy of the US-led Coalition forces on Saturday entered Syria and headed to its bases in northeast of the country, a monitor revealed.

Citing its local activists, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that nearly 50 military vehicles and trucks carrying military and logistical equipment, entered Syria through the border crossing of al-Walid.

The convoy was relocated from the Kurdistan Region, SOHR noted, adding that it "headed to the bases of the International Coalition in the countryside of Hasakah."

According to the Britain-based monitoring group, "this is the ninth Coalition convoy to enter Syria since the beginning of 2021."

530 I think 2020 had the record increase in homicides in history, since detailed stats have been kept. That, or close to all-time record increase. Note that violent crime and homicides have been in a long decline up until last year.

I'm sure mass releases of dangerous criminal convicts, and wholesale mau-mauing and handcuffing of police, along with open incitement of mob violence, had nothing to do with it.

But America seems pretty good with it.

So many streakers that at certain points, the bottleneck in and out of the libraries had you standing there next to fully clothed onlooking friends and other acquaintances feeling I'm, chilly.
