Does anyone doubt that he was an enthusiastic participant in the purges of the past, or that his recent reporting on Wuhan Flu ignores the reality and simply follows the conventional wisdom as handed down by Anthony Fauci, murderer of homosexuals and facilitator of the AIDS epidemic? Yeah, McNeil did some reporting on AIDS back in the day, so he should know better than most what a craven and awful man Fauci is. Hopefully his brownstone in Brooklyn is paid for, because he is going to have a tough time finding another gig that pays as well as the NYT.

Watched a First 48 with an interesting twist: They had surveillance footage of the young (black) punk, but couldn't identify him. So they called in an old school (white) beat cop who had worked the neighborhood for 20 years. He wasn't positive who it was, but within a week not only had he identified the kid, he got the kid to turn himself in and stuck by him through the process, even managing to appeal to the kid's conscience and getting him to confess. It was incredible to watch.

First "protesters" arrived in Capitol area 20 minutes before Trump's speech ended, and an hour before anyone at the rally listening to it could have arrived.

Opinions as to why vary, but I think it's because the people currently leading the charge to change honestly have NO IDEA what to do next. They know how to agitate, they know how to push, they know all these things...but they never stopped to answer to themselves let alone anyone else "what happens when we are finished with the drama portion of the program?" What are you rebelling against and how will it make things better?

They were down. 5 million fewer viewers on average than last year. And combined with the lack of Monday release of the preliminary numbers, it tells me that they were fudging numbers for 36 hours trying to come up with the best numbers they could.

We watched it when it first came out.. I think the later episodes were not as good because they killed off some of my favorite characters.....Seems to go with history pretty well

The J&J vaccine is a more traditional vaccine using that more or less prevents severe hospitalization and death in 100 percent of cases so far. It is also a one shot administration. I would wait for that one, currently waiting for FDA emergency approval.
The messenger RNA approach is new for vaccines and we simply do not know the long term effects of it in humans because it has never been used in human populations. Could be the future of safer and more effective vaccines or on the other hand could cause inflammation and immune system issues down the road with other diseases. We will see.
Me, I do not feel like it is worth being a guinea pig right now versus more established vaccine approaches.

The tribesmen were thieves, at least that was the official stories given in reports. Apparently the soldiers believed stealing from a U.S. Army column or station deserved a stiff punishment and maybe a little future deterrence. Not sure if that translated into "shooting them like rabbits" though.

The theatrical production, Les Miserables is likely one of the two or three most successful musicals of all time. I guess you could throw in The Phantom of the Opera and even Cats, though Cats does not deserve it imo. Either way, any real fan of Les Miserables would never accept the actors not having a British accent and often a Cockney accent. Sure it was set in France and about French people, but it is what it is. I think even Americans who play those roles try to UK it up a bit when possible.

Right, which means that if you're going to make a movie about the French or Russians or Germans or Italians but film it in English with American/British actors it makes more sense to have them speak in their native accents than attempt a foreign one. Perhaps you could try to group different English accents to match different regions of the setting (like Southerners for Provence and New Yorkers for Paris).

i need to rewatch that film. Obviously the point was about how twisted their society was. No one loved the tyrant, they feared him and nothing more. They feared everyone else around them. So for that reason, it was a great film that let people get an insight into history.
I have studied a lot of Russian history. More than the average bloke I would surmise. From many semesters of study, I came up with one description of Russian history. Just like Mr. T. predicted, "pain".

Never saw that one. Sounds like the accents were the point of the comedy. I really suspect the same thing is being done in 'The Death of Stalin'. I mean, Jeffery Tambor is playing a Russian but making zero attempts to act or sound Russian. Could be a bit.

It's mentioned in the sources a few times, Anna. As the American armies converged on Tunisia, leaving supply depots and supply columns behind them. There were some incidents of alleged thieves being shot when discovered, but it wasn't common enough for a comparison to rabbit hunting to be valid except maybe by a New York reporter. The Brits had their own similar incidents, but those were swept under the rug instead.

It's worth re-watching. It mingles horror of the NKVD state with comedy and it kinda works. Russian history seems to be a mix of horror, tragedy and occasional glory.

It depends on what they were going for. It's not like the actors aren't acting, they are emoting and being in character but at the same time they're all doing their own native tongue. Seeing a lower class Brit accent come out of a guy made up to look like Stalin might be the joke.

As the series producers discussed, each nationality--English, French, Italian, and German had its own trope of pronunciation and tone. The French were sibilant and emotional, the Italians sing song and emotional, the Germans were guttural and shouting, and the English as clueless twits. Characters had their own catchphrases repeated over and over again and occasionally turned by others to good effect.
The series is comic, the underlying reality of life in an occupied country not so much.

English with American/British actors it makes more sense to have them
speak in their native accents than attempt a foreign one. Perhaps you
could try to group different English accents to match different regions
of the setting (like Southerners for Provence and New Yorkers for
Paris).

i like it when an American actor can do an accent well. I thought Dicaprio was great in Bood Diamond. He sounded legit to me but honestly, how the hell do I know. I did like the movie though.
as I recall, Harrison Ford was pilloried for K19 The Widowmaker. I believe he tried a Russian accent and failed spectacularly. The movie had no impact on me so I can't really say. But Connery sure as heck didn't try a legit Russian accent in his sub movie. He was gruff, but I don't think that equals Russian.

They didn't use WWI tanks, they were best modern tanks that the Army had at the time. They were just totally inadequate to use against the best German tanks at the time.

I would imagine that the decision for no accents was for comedy, as you surmise. I don't have a definite answer for my own question, I just wonder if it might have been funnier to hear the actors make awful attempts at accents, kind of like Harrison Ford in K-19, which became a certain source of unintended comedy in a more serious Russian-based movie.

there was a show in the 80s by HBO called "The History of White People in America" It was done by Martin Mull. They went on and on about mayonnaise. I didn't know that was a thing and still wonder about it. I do recall the show sucking, so there is that.

Is nothing believable anymore, even stupid TV ratings? It turns out, no. Neilson delayed the release because they adjusted the numbers to include (for the first time ever) "out of home viewing". So, bars and restaurant viewers in Florida (and other red states where bars and restaurants are legal), and streaming. Except the CBS stream cratered several times and people supposedly gave up in frustration.
These numbers are massaged, in the extreme. They include a whole new category of viewer (meaning apples and oranges comp to begin with) and then they include estimated viewing for a streaming service that didn;t work reliably.

It only took about two months for the U.S. forces to go from Kasserine Pass to the shrinking perimeter around Tunis and Sfax, in terrain that was like upland New Mexico.

Yeah most of the big sports last year got Nielsen to start including that. The problem is it is at best a WAG and as a result the ratings are nearly worthless now. How many watched in a bar? literally nobody knows and even if they did know how many were there when the TV was on, nobody knows how many were actually paying attention to the game.
So figure the number is a few million lower, probably 15 million down from last year, minimum.

Not as resigned myself that nothing is happening.
AZ is still inching forward with Maricopa County audit, Kemp and SOS are now facing recall petitions and plenty of voting bills introduced to outlaw what they approved in GA.
Massive election issues are the thing that they cannot hide and has caused massive instability in other countries over time. It is corrosive acid that means that if repeated in future elections may result in a break altogether. With the Dem margin narrowing--House Rep. count, is 212 with a GOP held seat in TX vacant due to yesterday's death, it is not impossible that Congress actually changes hands like in the 1930's before the election through the normal deaths and resignations that occur. Same as in Senate.
