This could hang in any nursery or family room to bring a gentle smile whenever someone looks at it.

104 For some reason I'm always taken aback a little when I see a situation depicted from the past that points out how much in common we have with our ancestors.

Who of those who have children or tended to them not had an amusing interlude where the child wants to do to the adult what the adult does to or for the child and the adults mostly go along with it.

There are other general situations such as pet ownership in the past. This can be seen in art work and photography. The older the better as the number of years you would expect that things would be somehow different. Yet they are not. Did Cave Men do the same thing? Did Egyptian slaves building the pyramids go home to their hovel and pet the cat and play with the dog and indulge their children?

Probably.

I found out years ago that in some states it is against the law to sell and possess dental adhesives. Ain't that something?

Dentists also managed to escape being part of Medicare (except for children) as a result we have seniors who can get a heart transplant but can't get a set of dentures or a tooth removed. (disregarding the socialist aspects of medicare. I'm pointing out how Dentists have managed to keep from having to work for less compensation than other Doctors and I wonder how they managed it and also that that avoidance can be seen as detrimental to the elderly.

I wouldn't call the first two seasons of Twin Peaks, that aired on ABC, great overall. There's some great stuff there, but it's very much of its time in ways that have made sure it didn't age that well.

The rest is more Lynch movie than Frost/Lynch TV show, and your enjoyment will depend on your opinion of Lynch's movies like Eraserhead and Blue Velvet.

Rock haulers and big SUV's are the worst on the road.

I had to pick up a friend down in Huntsville, TX one year. It's normally about a 3 hour drive from here. There was an ice storm overnight, so the roads were terrible. I was in a 5.0 Mustang, 5-speed. On I45 heading south, I just got in the right lane and did between 30 and 40 most of the way. Took me 8 hours to get down there, but I made it. All the idiots in their SUV's would go blowing by me at 60. I'd see them in the ditch 3 or 4 miles down the road. Occasionally, I'd yank the e-brake and do a 360, straighten up and continue on my way, laughing.

This is utterly counter to my experience. In my case, it was 2WD 6-cylinder with the towing package (very low gearing). That truck had been crashed by every driver in my family, including me. All but one incident happened in the snow, and none of us were unfamiliar with snowy conditions. That thing was squirrely on dry pavement, and snow was its kryptonite.

Driving back to CO through Kansas, there was a rainstorm unlike anything I have ever experienced before. About as much visibility as in a whiteout. When I woke up the next morning, the billboards were sticking up out of the water and I drove through similar conditions - albeit during daylight - for another 75 miles or so. Yes, absolutely. When I lived in Atlanta I would try to call in sick the first day of ice/snow. What would invaribly happen is people would drive 10-15 mph every were then come to a stop 5 feet from the intersection. So you dealt with too slow traffic and people sliding through intersections. acceleration/forces/time.

240 I drove delivery trucks of all sizes to grocery stores to deliver products in high demand during coming ice and snow events and usually ended up driving in the event to pay for schooling and money.

It can be done even without the studded tires required in northern areas or chains/whatnot. The major issue on ice is that you have to maintain incredible alertness while proceeding at very tedious speeds using physics as your friend. You use your accelerator as the brake and avoid using your brakes as much as possible. Another trick is to put your left knee hard against the door so as to feel road vibrations from the car frame. You can feel something and often react faster than seeing it.

You have to allow as much space as possible in front on you and basically never quite stop. This is especially critical on hills, proceed slowly up the hill but never stop. On downhill runs, lowest gear possible and plenty of room with absolutely no acceleration.

Ice, snow, sleet, old snow with ice, etc. are each unique in what you can and have to do driving but sheer glazed ice is probably the worst.

Posted by: whig at February 11, 2021 10:33 AM (pO7gM)

241 Once the temperature goes below 15, salt does not work to melt ice. Have to use calcium chloride or magnesium chloride. Both of those are in much shorter supply, with less applicators.

Likely shock. I once had an Elk-Town Car interaction at 50 MPH after leaving my parents' hous. Animal went up the hood, hit the windshield, pivoted down the driver's sent, sent the sideview mirror through my window (covering me with glass) and then hit the road.

I pulled off, got out, checked for damage to me (none), canceled my appointment and drove back to their house. My mom said, "why did you come back? Did you forget something?" I relied, very calmly, "No. I hit an elk and I am pretty sure I totaled my car. It's in your driveway. What do you have to drink in this house?"

She said I looked like a ghost. I felt calm and collected and I did get home, but I was *not* in a good way.

As a native of WNY, I can wholeheartedly endorse this as the number one key, right there.

And when you do brake, you "stab" the brake. Stabbing doesn't have to mean you stab them hard. A series of short, light ones usually does the trick. You don't want to come to a full stop umless you absolutely have to, and when you do, you want to already be barely moving.

unique in what you can and have to do driving but sheer glazed ice is

I hit the George Washington Bridge early one morning driving an 18 wheeler down to Philly from CT.

The water main running across the bridge had frozen and burst. The bridge was mostly a solid sheet of ice. When I saw the ice I let go of the steering wheel and just sat back for the ride. Made it to the Jersey side and started to breath again. They closed the bridge about 10 minutes later.

258 And when you do brake, you "stab" the brake. Stabbing doesn't have to mean you stab them hard. A series of short, light ones usually does the trick. You don't want to come to a full stop umless you absolutely have to, and when you do, you want to already be barely moving.

259 Morning all. Late start. Worst driving was winter '83/84. Left Dallas to go back to Galveston. Houston south to Galveston was a foot of snow/slush. They had been threatening to close the Causeway from the mainland onto the island since I'd passed thru Huntsville. A Holiday Inn at Mile Marker 16 was my point of no return. I was going to have to stop and get a room if they had shut it down. Just as I got to the exit, they came over the radio and said it was open. I slid onto the island with little time to spare. They closed it an hour later.

My third year of driving in Kansas, going to college as a freshman I took an off ramp from the highway too fast, barreled down off the ramp and jumped back on the northbound side of the highway facing south. I saw a group of semis coming at me through the snow.

I hit the gas hard out of instinct and my car slid sideways two inches. I regained my nerves and slowly accelerated back of the road down into a shallow snow filled ditch before the trucks which hadn't slowed got to me. I sat there for 30 minutes, an hour, I don't know, just gripping the wheel and looking forward. Then dug my self out and got back on the road. Never had a problem after that.

Posted by: banana Dream at February 11, 2021 10:41 AM (XRRK9)

263 Worst was driving through Omaha the morning after a nasty blizzard that left an inch of ice on the highways. At one point I was stopped, watching a truck ahead of me try to pull back onto the highway only to start spinning on the ice, when I looked in my rearview mirror and saw a semitruck jackknifing behind me. That will pucker you up real quick.

Diversity, above all else, is a ploy for creating delay after delay because a group has to waste time making sure everyone is on board and their unique points of view have been heard. It empowers the obfuscators and self-important. It indulges the vain.

Unless you have rules in place for closing out discussion and reaching a decision, every special snowflake with their own agenda will bog the group down in minutiae for minutes or hours at a time.

I tend to use the brakes seldom on ice because I drove delivery trucks; so gearing, jake brakes, extreme excessive spacing in front, etc. did a better job than the brakes on delivery trucks.

Kept the same approach driving cars simply because I go with what I know.

My greatest fear was other drivers and once where the snow was so heavy, it was approaching the clearance under the vehicle depth.

Yeah, those soft grippy compounds get shredded by hot pavement, though - as you mentioned. And the best time to buy snow tires is in June. If your local tire shop has leftover inventory of decent tires, they are usually willing to discount them to get them out of their store. You have to ask (they rarely offer that), but I did this for my last two sets and saved several hundred dollars each time by negotiating off-season and paying cash.

309 I remember reading in Car and Driver (maybe R&T) a decade or more ago about how for the vast majority of people simply standing on the brakes is the most effective strategy in everyday driving every time, and that something like 5% or so of the population shortened their stopping distances by using their own braking strategies and physical efforts.

The really neat part was that drivers get freaked out by the ABS and let off the brakes, lengthening stopping times or promoting crashes.

The other neat one was people standing on the brakes after they've left the road and ABS failing to work because it requires lock-up, and since the car was sliding across gravel or grass it never worked. THAT is when you use your best-knowledge strategies.

315 Nobody has touched upon the biggest issue with driving in winter storm conditions. It's not traction, it's visibility, both seeing and being seen. Many of the scary events involving loss of traction are brought on by not seeing an obstacle until one is so close than one cannot stop in time with the traction available.

Get a good set of bright foglights, and aim them low, and to the right, so you can see the fogline or the shoulder of the road in whiteout conditions. And if conditions become bad enough that you need to use the fog lights, turn off the damned headlights (but leave the park/tail lamps on!). Then you eyes will not be so dazzled by backscatter from the headlights bouncing off a million swirling snowflakes.

And don't use the foglights when it's clear. You create a pool of bright light near you car, but your pupils will close up, and you cannot see beyond that pool.

318 I-84, going home from Hood River to Vancouver at 7 at night. Just past the last Hood River exit, the road was closed due to a semi jackknifed. Spent an hour and a half on the highway for it to be cleared. I was driving an old cop car with studded tires. Mostly snow and not too bad on the roads until I got close to Troutdale, then it was all ice. Went off the road backwards, hit some snow and stopped. Got back on the road and this time, I bounced off the median. Managed to keep going. Thought I'd pull off at Troutdale. There was a semi blocking the exit so I tried to go around to get back on the freeway. I was going through town, trying to get up a hill. Everyone, including me, just slid back down. I finally found another way around, got back on the freeway and made it home. Took five hours for an hour and a half trip.

329 312, Once you divorce the nation's ruling class from the citizenry, the rest follows naturally.

The powers that be will do whatever is in their interest as a class and make up the rationalizations for why it is best for everyone.

That is why the citizenry generally respond with giving one person a really big stick to whack on their ruling class oppressors. Heck Aristotle, Machiavelli, John Adams, or any other serious student of history saw this played out time and time again. Corrupt ruling classes either are replaced by foreign invaders or gotten rid of internally by a popular champion. Like Smith's article of the 30 tyrants, oligarchies are unstable and do not last long.

The other neat one was people standing on the brakes after they've left the road and ABS failing to work because it requires lock-up, and since the car was sliding across gravel or grass it never worked. THAT is when you use your best-knowledge strategies.

You don't need to communicate through this shitty morse code you've thought up you idiot, your constant red brake lights would of been sufficient and necessary communication. People don't tap their brakes because of you. The message isn't for you. It's for the idiot texting their buds about their brilliant idea to use Gorilla Glue as hair gel.

The flashing lights help to get the attention of distracted drivers, and ultimately helps keep their engine out of your back seat.

While drive down a residential road I lost control and did two 360s. I came out of it driving in the original direction. My date yelled at me for showing off and scaring her but at school the next day she bragged about my driving.

I never told a soul that it was pure luck when did not slam into the parked cars on the street.

I have no real problem with it, and honestly appreciate people trying to put in the effort since 85% of drivers have no business being on the road but hey, they paid their $50 license fee after they proved they could parallel park that one time.

I think people use this for the same reason they put on their hazards (a lot of hazard lights in the US are just brake lights flashing), which is to wake drivers up from their hypnosis as soon as possible. Even moreso now that people are watching youtube or reading Facebook while they're driving.

Also, don't be afraid to take the ditch to avoid a collision with another vehicle. Ditching a car, even if it causes a rollover, usually means a non-injury accident. There are no guarantees if you hit another vehicle. Driving on oilfield roads in the winter, the unwritten rule, was that small vehicles were to take the ditch if meeting a big rig coming the other way. And the big rig driver was honor-bound to to stop, and pull you out of the ditch afterwards. Then both go on their way, unscathed.
