Map out the "victory tree" for White. It's rather complicated, but no branch should be longer than 3 moves.

(No, I don't intend to show fashion pics of Ms. Harris every week. Or any week. But I had to put up this newspaper article to show you the stark difference between how the two different WH administrations are being covered. However, the Post is usually a bit more conservative than the other NY newspapers, so I must say I'm a bit disappointed that it's the first one out of the gate to publish a suck-up fashion piece.)

Problem Solutions

Beginner Problem - Black To Play

20210206 - Problem 1.jpg
k6r/2Q5/8/7b/8/6Pq/4PP2/1R4K1 b - - 0 1

Pretty straightforward. All of Black's moves are forced.

1...Qh1+
2.Kxh1 Bf3+
3.Kg1 Rh1#

Intermediate Problem - White To Play

20210206 - Problem 2.jpg
2kr1b1r/pppn3p/6pP/3p1nP1/8/8/P1RNpP1B/1R4K1 w - - 0 1

Pretty much a straight line. The trick is seeing the rook sac on move 5.

1.Rxc7+ Kb8
2.Rbxb7+ Ka8
3.Rxa7+ Kb8
4.Rcb7+ Kc8
5.Rb8+ Nxb8
6.Rc7#

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20210206 - Problem 3.jpg
8/2P1P2N/3n2p1/6Bk/6p1/3P4/8/7K w - - 0 1

1. c8=Q Nf7

This is one of about 4 possible Black responses. Probably the most "intuitive" one is to take the new queen:

1...Nxc8 but then an underpromotion seals the deal: 2. e8=N g3 (or any N move) 3. Nef6#

or if 1...g3 then 2.Qh3#

1...Ne4 2.dxe4 g3 3.Qh3#)

1...Nf5 2.Qxf5 gxf5 (2...g3 3.Qh3#) 3.e8=Q#

2.Qc1 g3 (2...Nxg5 3.Qxg5#)
3.Nf6# 1-0

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

56 European rugby started today. I got the streaming package.

Plucky Scotland beat England at Twickenham for the first time in 38 years, 11-6. (They tied two years ago 38-3. Not as close as the score, as the Scots kicked the snot out of the Pommie Whites.

France is in top form and should win it all. Beat Italy 50-10 in Rome.

Ireland v Wales at Cardiff tomorrow. This has become one of the best rivalries in rugby. I was at the old stadium once upon a time. Nothing like hearing 80,000 Welsh sing their national anthem.

Melania paid tribute Tuesday to Karl Lagerfeld, the man behind the venerable Chanel label, posting on social media two photos of herself wearing his designs. "Today the world lost a creative genius," she wrote. "We will miss you Karl! #RIPKarlLagerfeld."

Trump also shared a signed sketch made by Lagerfeld of one of the ensembles, the white suit she wore for a high-profile 2017 White House visit - marking her first official appearance as first lady - by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife, Sara Netanyahu. The drawing featured his handwritten notes about the garment's features, including a "soft peplum" and a "pencil skirt" tailored to a "knee length."

In my HS days the girls had to wear skirts (and we boys had to wear khakis or dress pants and collared shirts). Then one January came a real cold snap, cold for here, and the girls complained about the temps. (Remember, they mostly walked to school or waited for the bus in the cold.) The School Board dithered about allowing it, and by the time they said okay, the cold weather was over.

One time, Frank Sinatra came by my place, and sat in this chair. I say, "Frank, you hang out with Ali. Just between me and you, how old is Ali?" Know what Frank told me? He said "Hey, Ali is a hundred thirty-seven years old." A hundred and thirty-seven years old!
