Free Speech For Me But Not For Thee: The Mantra Of The Left

Free speech is, along with a few other apparently antiquated ideas like the inalienable right to self defense, property rights, and equality under the law is under attack by the (illegitimate) Biden administration.

The idea that words are illegal is firmly rooted in monarchist and totalitarian visions of governance, and it sure does look like we just got both of those.

Free Ricky Vaughn

Biden’s Department of Justice is now prosecuting formerly prolific, online personality, Ricky Vaughn (A.K.A. Douglass Mackey) for illegal memes. This is a hammer blow to the First Amendment and a blatantly political prosecution.
A younger and more naive version of your writer would have assumed that The Supreme Court would gleefully smack this obscenity, but as the article points out, our current political divide includes wildly different opinions of what what constitutes free speech, and based on recent indications of the court's cowardice, one should not be hopeful.

The restrictions on speech in a free society should be carefully constructed to be limited in scope, and difficult to use. But over the last two or three generations, the thoroughly co-opted American Academia has produced an ocean of ignoramuses who simply do not know the history of speech and how dangerous speech restrictions have been during much of human history. So mean speech and nasty speech and disturbing speech has become indistinguishable from speech that should be controlled. In fact, an important and controlling precedent, Brandenburg v. Ohio held that speech must be allowed "except where such advocacy is directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action." Even in the labyrinthine and opaque minds of the justices of the Supreme Court, it should be abundantly clear that suggesting to a bunch of dimwits that they should vote by text does not rise to anywhere near that definition. And the use of an anti-KKK statute is even more offensive!

But as has been pointed out so many times in the recent past, their violence is speech, and our speech is violence. What is so troubling is that significant restrictions on speech will often lead to violence, because without the natural right of political expression, what is left?

45 A willowed comment (#569) I want to respond to.

The left has cornered the market on words. They own most all of the means of production and transportation of words. They can now snap words into and out of existence at will. "Intellectuals" of the right are always battling last century's foes. Breitbart was the first and greatest at trying to pull us into the present.
Posted by: banana Dream

Right sentiment but what it's missing is that "the Right" is simply mentally incapable of understanding "the Left" when it comes to communication and transmission of information/thoughts/concepts by the use of oral and written language. "The Right" (I use these terms monolithically for a purpose) has no awareness, let along understanding, of semiotics and things like that. "The Right" just thinks "The Left" is stupid. Yet who is in ascendance?

Posted by: SFGoth at January 31, 2021 12:17 PM (KAi1n)

46 By the way this isn't going to end.

The left believes they can usher in utopia. And if it doesn't happen its because someone doing wrong things. And once they stop everyone from doing wrong things and utopia still doesn't come well...it must be because of wrong thought.

And the only way to deal with wrong thought is to get rid of the wrong thinkers.

An AoS poster who is on the Philly police force, said that 100 of his fellow police are under investigation because they attended the Trump rally.

Apparently the right to peaceably assemble and walk down the highway - enshrined in a court decision allowing Martin Luther King and his followers to walk down a public highway - is now something that puts even the police under suspicion.

I don't know how we got here, but the fan is approaching the shit at warp speed.

The masses on the left ARE stupid, or at best, massively deceived. They swallow most of the obvious agitprop, and just want the best deal on their new phone or best streaming services. --- ..
The Smart "leftists" are the Bill Ayers types, but up the chain from that are the shadow men that manipulate us all, get the bailouts for billionaires, bribe/threaten/kill those in their way. These are the smart (evil) guys ... they are not really "leftist ideologues", imo. Not at the very top. --- ..

I think it's worth pointing out, these are NOT the actions of a people who see themselves as winning. One of their greatest fears is that they can't shut everything down, and it's unrealistic to believe they can.

It doesn't mean they won't try, and that things won't keep getting uglier while they do, but ultimately their efforts are futile. What comes next though, I can't predict.

102 Ha, ha. I'm watching a documentary discussing something from the fifties and they're showing a piece of paper in a typewriter that an actor has just been typing. While the font sorta looks like a serifed typewriter font, it's clearly a computer font as there's kerning clearly evident between all of the characters and the characters themselves aren't monospaced. What? The actor couldn't master typing the two sentences partially visible on the screen even though he'd been banging away at the keys ten seconds earlier?? Either that or it's one of those TX TANG typewriters that produces the same results as a $40,000 era-correct typesetting machine.

But I'm a White Male, so legally discriminating against me, by giving everyone else an advantage, was supported by the Supreme Court.

170 156 "jury nullification: don't care the crime, not guilty.

deadlocked jury: can't agree on guilt"

So instead of saying 'Don't care about the crime", just say can't agree on guilt.

Same outcome.
Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at January 31, 2021 12:46 PM (S7VTO)

i should clarify that jury nullification is seen as when their IS evidence of a crime but the juror says not guilty. typically the deadlocked jury is that they cannot agree on the evidence or testimony. One says no, one says we can't get to the legal conclusion.
i say this as having served as a jury foreman on a felony case.

I've been thinking they are in Blitzkrieg stage ... in the sense of now actually having the White House and Congress. But they stole it and don't have We the People. In my sense, they now maybe have their Battle of the Bulge? In a sense, they broke through and stole the election. Now they are moving all their resources to make sure they are not cut off ... so they shut down all evidence they stole the election, that they ran a coup ... such talk means ? prison, or at least a month in the box. -- ..
Hard to make a pure analogy, because they have infiltrated our culture for decades, and control BigTech and BigBank and the bureaucracies ... the last battle line is taking our Liberty, while claiming they are returning to "normal". This is their final assault on liberty ... have they overreached? (hence my "Bulge" analogy) ... maybe not, they seem to own the courts as well, only hot war remains ... barring some other resistance emerging.

By creating a 401K system, that pretty much forced everyone's retirements into the Stock Market, it has created an artificial floor for the market.

After all, the market is based on how much money is being invested in X amount of stock.

Now its also true that with zero interest loans from the Fed Available, there is a lot of 'loose' money out there, being used to play the market. Problem is those are the gamblers, they are not long term investments.

Its that money that creates the volatility.

If anything, it should be shouted from the rooftops that the main Boss Battle is not going to happen in the halls of Congress. They're not even going to happen in the press rooms, or the ivy covered walls of academia.

No, the main boss battle will be with the oligarchs. The money men, the funders of all. Can we get to them without battling the lesser bosses? Maybe not, but regaining elective offices is not going to accomplish much of anything.

Unless the company goes bankrupt, it all depends on WHEN you bought the stock (yeah, I did take a bath when United Airlines went bankrupt, I'd bought a bunch after 9/11 figuring it had enough assets to cover debts and liabilities, but the Court just F'd the stockholders).

I've got stocks from 1983, that I bought for less than 1/10 of their 'supposed' value today.

So Long Term? As long as the company is stable, its not much of a gamble IMO... SHORT Term? or new Technology? Huge gamble.

Not having had any experience being a juror, I wasn't sure what their point was.

The case was an individual being tried for the second time for resisting arrest. I didn't think that we had enough evidence to prove he was resisting. I voted not guilty. Fortunately for me there was another juror who happened to agree with me, but all the others wanted the guy to be convicted. They wanted blood.

Since the jury was hung with the two of us saying not guilty, the guy was released but could potentially be tried a third time. I found out afterwards, (asking the judge), that the penalty would have been 30 days in jail if the guy had been convicted.

Resisting arrest is such a bullshit charge, 90% of the time. It's usually a tacked on thing, for whatever else the cops wanted to throw at him.

If the guy flinches when they go to put the cuffs on him, that's "resisting arrest." And if the guy happens to fall while he's being manhandled, and steps on the cop's toe or bumps into his arm, that's "assault on a cop."

Now I know there are violent altercations between cops and perps, and if you want to throw the book at the guy, fine, but if ALL you're walking into court with is a resisting citation? It's bullshit.

I was liberal until I figured out economics, but I'm still very much of a you-leave-me-alone-and-i'll-leave-you-alone mindset (so long as leaving you alone doesn't end up redounding to my detriment). Not defending the Wall Street even a little bit here. There is no doubt the place has lots of sharks that are out just to take other people's money. 248 @199 So Long Term? As long as the company is stable, its not much of a gamble IMO... SHORT Term? or new Technology? Huge gamble.

----------------

The problem basically boils down to "until they're suddenly not stable". For quite a while, GameStop was stable. But the market that company exists in is changing, and GameStop missed its chance to keep up. I know people who used to think that GM was stable. And arguably, for quite a while it was. But then 2008 happened.

If you can find a company to invest in that's going to hold its value over the length of its life, then that's a great thing. You'll make a decent amount of money over the long-term. But quite a few companies become less good as the decades roll on.

Having said that, your basic point is still sound. The market shouldn't be viewed as a way to get rich quick.

The speech you are commanded never to utter, and when you get to choose to continue living muzzled,or to die speaking freely...silence is gold plated tungsten. The paper profits are illusory ... that "money" goes to money heaven, when stocks drop 20%. BUT The Plan (not the "Trust the Plan", plan) is to inflate away the debt, and the stock/bond game is part of that, a big part. -- ..
The fed reserve is already buying (with QE "money") bad corporate debt, and will probably buy stocks directly if need be. They can't let stocks fall, can't let interest rates rise (very much, if at all, rate hikes are being talked up though). ________________

That's because they're defining unequal results as "racism."

It's "racist" for there to be more enlisted blacks than whites, and more white officers than blacks.

Ability has nothing to do with it. You see, the only reason a white can ever possibly out-perform a black in government or the military or business is obviously because of raaaaaaacism. But in sports where blacks dominate whites, of course it's all about superior ability.

A few decades back there was a fire district where most of the firefighters were white, and black applicants kept failing the firefighter test. So the blacks sued, and the district dumbed down the test, but blacks still had a low pass rate, so eventually they just got rid of the test altogether. Why should a firefighter need to understand how fire spreads, or what causes ignition, or what chemical combinations are flammable. Knowledge be raaaaaacist!

I've got something similar (due to my employer offering to match contributions), though not to the degree that you do. And I suspect that you're much closer to retirement than I am. However, based on my understanding of the system, a market crash will only hurt you for a short period of time. The contents of your retirement account will be released to you over a protracted period of time. So if the market crashed, you would have a lean year or two (which would not be pleasant by any means). But as the market recovers from its hypothetical crash, the value of your account will recover as well, and start paying you more money in its regular disbursements.

I believe Philip Morris/Altria was number one by a good margin. Some of the others were Coke, AtT, Heinz, and the like. Sure things change and some companies blow it.

But let's be honest here, the chance Coke ever goes broke is nil. I have never given stock advice here and this thread is by far as far as I have gone. I sure as hell am not advising buying Coke either. But it is an example of a company that will find a way to adapt one way or the other. They are not going to go bust imo.
Altria is a fave just for studying fundamentals and how markets and dividends work. The irony is the stock was the top performer for many, many decades BECAUSE people thought it was at risk of going bust. There is a lot more to that story and if people want to research it, the info is out there.

Right now, I would pull all my money out of stocks and put it into cash (a Money Market Account).
I did this at the end of 2020 with my 401K. The broader stock market is going to take retreat this Spring and go back 15-25%. It will look like a "crash", but a lot of stocks are over-valued now. Tesla, for instance, is value at 1750:1 for price to earnings ratio. Is that for real? That's nuts. And of course, that is an extreme example.
When the retreat is over, is a good time to put your money back in.

Posted by: Bozo Conservative....Outlaw in America at January 31, 2021 01:47 PM (tjZg/)

310 there will be no crash, for the same reason that the hedge funds aren't really going to lose much in the Gamestop fiasco. If the Market shows a serious threat of dropping, the Fed will write a $2 Trillion check to the Treasury and the Admin. will buy whatever it takes to keep prices up - even if that means they need another $2 Trillion after the first is used up.

what, are gonna try to tell me there are laws and norms that might keep them from doing this? More likely, if you dare to criticize it the DOJ's new Hate Speech Crime Unit will put you on top of their list.

The "estimated" capitalization of the stock "markets" is something like 86 Trillion dollars. I don't think the imbeciles in the Biden Junta can fix that big a problem if the market crashes. Their panicky moves surrounding the Gamestop imbroglio show just how dumb they really are. Just let it fail, don't prop up these losers in this game.
Too Big to Fail is a bad way to think about these things; that was the big mistake in the 2008 Tarp fund fiasco. Sometimes bad operations HAVE to fail.

I don't want to be on the list of the first people to be rounded up. The left ain't f'ing around with us and not enough of us on the "right" are rallying together to do anything about it, which at this point is probably ok because we are too late to do anything.

Struggled with that being a cowardly act, but I dont think it was. I'm not taking a back handed swipe at us saying this, but again, we we haven't done anything I response to the left, even in a peaceful way and it's probably too late at this point anyways.

332 Actually quickly read the Sundance piece and most of what he says is fairly obviously true, which is not a criticism.

There is an all-encompassing surreal character to the response to Trump's election by the Beltway, from 2016 til today. The rot in the institutions didn't of course start there, but its depth and severity were revealed. From leaked presidential phone calls with heads of state (WTF??? itself a scandal unlike anything in modern times) - which was THE FIRST WEEK of his administration - to of course the whole absurd "RUSSIA!" nonsense, which includes Mueller, everything was like bad fiction about the Beltway.

Biden's installation is the crowning surreal event.

334 That's basically why mutual funds exist. They do tend to have minimum initial purchase entry barriers. But they allow you to let someone else - who is supposedly being paid to watch the companies that the fund owns shares in - handle that problem for you.

The problem, of course, is the minimum initial purchase and annual fees, which means that you need to have a chunk of money set aside before you start investing in them.
Posted by: junior at January 31, 2021 01:28 PM (PTw5h)

There's another, more pernicious problem: you're joined at the hip with ding-a-lings who will sell their holdings when the mutual fund drops, unwittingly adopting the "buy high, sell low" strategy, and exacerbating any market swings.

Of course, that works the other way, too, in that they will drive the mutual fund up when it is going up. In short, they introduce a hefty element of irrationality to the festivities.

In principle, one could wait out bouts of irrationality, but the problem is when one is forced to sell for other reasons, e.g., to raise cash, or is required to sell by the required minimum distribution. Then being joined at the hip with ding-a-lings is painful.

That's right, becaue nobody really knows what the P/E is for Tesla. The published number is something like 139.37 (12 month trailing average), but Tesla lost money all through 2020, so what were their actual earnings? No one really knows; there are people that hype Tesla stock, but the P/E ratio has to be ....huge. The bottom line is that Tesla is vastly over-valued in the Stock Market, compared to other automotive stocks. And so are other companies, which means that the Stock Market is due for a very large correction.
