The hijacking on the 401 retirement funds will be when govt borrowing collapses as an emergency measure.
Right now, the regime is planning on exploding govt spending via borrowing which entails less problems politically. Essentially, via borrowing, the government is basically monetizing the debt and turning into a rentier state. Historically, the major control of the people versus kings, presidents, etc. has been the power of the purse which means consent of the governed necessary for tax increases. A rentier state uses outside resources to finance government and as a result is not democratic in practice. Posted by: whig at February 02, 2021 03:12 PM (pO7gM) 91

I agree, and your number sounds about right. The difference between this time and the 70's is that politically, it would look bad to raise interest rates. So they'll stay at near zero in spite of inflation, which should guarantee a rate of 100% inflation the next year. Once a system hits that mark, it quickly becomes 100% per quarter, then 100% per week. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 02, 2021 03:25 PM (trdmm) Yeah, they can't touch inflation rates with zero interest for so long, and a huge rising debt unheard of, even in WWII. What happens next? Hard to say.
On one hand you could look at this leviathan regime lashing out with brute force in every direction--clumsily rigging the election at the eleventh hour, openly manipulating the stock market, using its media mouthpieces to denounce its designated enemies of the state with hysterical, militaristic language, persecuting and prosecuting anyone and everyone, barricading themselves inside the imperial capitol behind razor wire and a division of troops--and interpret it as weakness, a clear sign that for all its power the regime understands it longer has any real authority. On the other hand, you could interpret it as a sign that they're now so powerful that they don't even have to care about pretenses anymore. They can just openly crush and humiliate whomever they choose and there's nothing to be done about it. These are the people who killed Epstein and called it suicide, and everyone in America knew it was bullshit and it didn't matter. They tell the most transparent, outrageous lies in the media and simply silence or ban anyone who calls them out on it. So who knows. Posted by: BunnyFooFoo at February 02, 2021 03:37 PM (0Uf+z) 240

Tom Servo,
Given the level of government debt, the Fed literally CANNOT raise interest rates as it would either provoke immediate massive cutting of federal spending and thus a depression or tax increases to the level that the government will collapse anyway. Thus, we borrow and borrow until we cannot anymore. In essence, debts that cannot be repaid, will not be repaid. The choice is depreciate the currency to worthlessness through monetizing the debt or default immediately. Ultimately, a historically an outright default is more shortlived in effects along with a general debt jubilee than depreciating the currency. I know all this Wall Street bashing is fun, but they didn't change the rules, the kids just didn't understand the rules they agreed to. They all signed margin agreements that they didn't understand and now they're trying to make a market event into a political one.
Fair enough. But the SEC's charter is for orderly markets and they restrict trading by limiting margin during periods of high volatility. It doesn't matter to them that the 'little guy' WANTED the volatility. IT's what they always do, no matter who starts it. The most dangerous thing in the markets is people with high leverage who don't understand the risks they're taking. Wall Street Bets has that written all over it. But they think it's political because they think everything is political. It isn't. 239 It is more likely the former than the latter. The Dems launched a coup successfully via the election steal. But, they lack the real power to consolidate their winnings but their teammates on team GOPe are trying their best to shore up the Dems there.
In a geographically dispersed population of Reds and Blues, it would be very nasty for either side to slip into a hot Civil War so the attempt is a psyop to persuade people that resistance is useless. It is working for some folks because what they have been taught is Germany in the 30's or perhaps the Russian Revolution. A few know of the French Revolution. In Germany, the elimination of the Communists more or less had majority support of the population although they disagreed on means. That is not true here. Both the Russian and French revolutions meant wholesale liquidation of the ruling elites by violence or exile. That is not present here. This is top down repression more like the Chinese response to Tienanmen Square or your average military coup complete with the military imagery and the frantic buying off of key groups in the institutions needed to control the population. So I am watching one of my favorite shows on Youtube, Rick Beato's examination of music and culture. He's a musician and producer, who was a unversity professor of music theory and he is fascinating to watch. I highly recommend.
But he brought up something about what killed music by 2000. In 1983, 90% of American media (print, radio, TV, music etc) was owned by 50 companies. By 2011, that same percentage was owned by... 6. What happened? Bill Clinton signed the Telecommunications Act of 1996 which allowed big companies like GE, Disney, Viacom etc to gobble up smaller ones. GOPe cheered this: big business!!! But it also meant that viewpoints became shrunk, compacted, and more easily manipulated. Getting 50 small businesses to go along with woke crap is hard. Getting 6 to... much easier. Industrial scale is just more efficient in every way. It's sad, but true. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia My experience was, farmers who spent the winter rebuilding equipment did fine. Those who bought new gear every couple years or so (on credit) were always behind the eight ball. As to economies of scale, once your farm is big enough for industrial levels of equipment, the playing field is pretty level. The largest investor in hedge funds are pensions. They all benefit from their existence.
I know you are the same people who sent me death threats in 2009 when I was managing money at a large fund. It didn't matter to you that I had nothing to do with mortgages, never got a penny in 'bailout' money, and never even lost money for our investors. I'm a part of a machine that you can't see the value in, so you want it destroyed. you don't understand what you're destroying, but you want it destroyed anyway. I knew that's what I was in for commenting here, but I did it anyway so I have no one to blame but myself. But I'll tell you something. Something none of you will believe, but at least I've said it. Most of the people in the hedge fund industry are more honorable, decent, and honest than the people I meet in the street. They have to be because success in the industry requires it. You treat hedge funds like they're a single homogenous group because it serves your political purposes. Does that sound like anyone else we know? You call that 'shilling' because you think I'm making a political point. I'm not. I'm just telling you how it is. Posted by: Tom From WashSquare at February 02, 2021 03:58 PM (s0h8C) 342

308 When are they going to push for cashless?
Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at February 02, 2021 03:44 PM (dNzKv) That's the nuclear option as far as currency goes. The ultimate trump card for the U.S. is to declare all currency worthless (using counterfeiting as an excuse) and that all money is going to be replaced with either new bills or electronic money. All you have to do to redeem your cash is to come in and explain how you have so much of it. Just produce your tax records and other documents showing it's legal. I went through this in Korea while serving in the Army and the "script" we used for cash was declared worthless at midnight one day. Koreans were not allowed to have script and some killed themselves as a result. The whole civilian world has their assets in U.S. cash. If we make the switch, the planet collapses. LASue, back in the day, I used to survey those folks as a temp job for the USDA.
Most farms are corporations as a way to protect assets from lawsuits, help on taxes, and protect the personal assets of a farmer from bankruptcy. Land ownership is generally separate from a lot of row crop operations and some cattle farming operations as well. Dairy and hog operators typically own their facilities and chicken facilities involve land owners contracting to a vertically integrated firm like Tysons. As a result, a lot of farmers farm large acreages but own little of the land (same as a lot of shop owners do not own their shop locations). I knew of families that farmed over 10000 acres as a small subchapter S corporation but owned less than 100 acres of that amount. The ones that typically owned their own land and operated it as mom and pop operations were produce farmers, dairy farmers, and hog farmers. The poultry farmers (broilers) were all tied up in contracts that basically resembled share cropping to be frank. The cattle ranchers were in between. The true behemoths in the industry are the suppliers and processors--ConAgra, Monsanto, ADM, Tysons, Cargill, etc. Posted by: whig at February 02, 2021 03:59 PM (pO7gM) 345

Posted by: Some rat in the swamp at February 02, 2021 03:57 PM (r1z5A) There is a concept called minimum efficient scale, above which increasing scale of anything just adds managers and coordination problems without increasing productivity. I assume the MES for a farm is dictated by crop, location, local costs, taxes, etc., so it can't be a one-size-fits-all. Posted by: whig at February 02, 2021 03:59 PM (pO7gM) Yes. The way to think of it is that you're just providing a little bit of land and a little bit of labor to the chicken company, and they pay you a little bit of money. It can't be a livelihood. You have to have some other job, whether farm work (could be on your own crops) or a job in town. My grandmother had 30,000 chickens, which was a decent supplement to Social Security and manageable for her. Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at February 02, 2021 04:05 PM (BMmaB) 354

341, Tom from Wash Square,
Project much. Where did I call for death threats? Making pointless threats is stupid. It is curious that you raise the pension argument--it is because pension funds are eminently griftable, especially like CalPers that they desperately need above market returns in order to maintain their ponzi scheme. But, you cannot stop the signal nor can you make the claims that people in hedge funds are honorable, etc. There are no facts in evidence that this is true. Essentially they have captured the regulators, they have bribed our politicians, and they have ravaged and destroyed companies and employment. Thus privatizing gains while placing the costs on everyone not a part of the hedge fund. If no economy existed such as N. Korea, no hedge fund would exist because literally there is no surplus to grift. In a place like Venezuela, it would have no hedge fund as such because the grifters run the joint without a middle man. Basically, everything done by a hedge fund can be done via other vehicles that allow popular participation--so why hedge funds? Posted by: whig at February 02, 2021 04:07 PM (pO7gM) 361
