Saturday Morning Coffee Tea Break

13021c0ffee (1).jpg

OK. I'm a guy.

***

Poor Homeless Soul in California

I talked with a homeless man this morning and asked him how he ended up this way.

He said, "Up until last week, I still had it all.

I had plenty to eat, my clothes were washed and pressed,

I had a roof over my head,

I had HDTV and Internet, and I went to the gym, the pool, and the library.

I was working on my MBA on-line.

I had no bills and no debt.

I even had full medical benefits coverage.

I felt sorry for him, so I asked, "What happened? Drugs? Alcohol? Divorce?"

Oh no, nothing like that," he said. "

"Because of Coronavirus, I was unexpectedly paroled".

***

Come for the chatter, stay for the education..........

***

Good morning Morons, Lurkers and everyone in between. Holy crap it's the last Saturday of January. Bloviate. Opine. Discuss whatevs in this open thread. Be nice to the 'ettes. Be kind to one another and for heaven's sake, no running with sharp objects.

Have a great weekend!

Another bit of good news. Her Majesty was looking to get her pension money from a previous company. They offered a lump-sum payment in 2016 and when she got the paperwork last month, it was 85% less. Numerous calls to the pension department. Nobody knew anything but nattered on about mortality tables and interest rates and how she should have contacted them when she turned 65.

We sent in all the 2016 paperwork and they called last night to say that yes, they made a mistake and the lump-sum amount was actually slightly higher than in 2016. They're sending new paperwork now.

Not that it was a huge sum of money, but still...

I think you hit on the answer in the statement. Girls will readily acknowledge other girls are pretty. Girls might even enjoy looking at other pretty girls in a completely non-sexual way because pretty things are pretty and nice to look at.

Guys don't do that to other men. Well, 99% of men don't. We can usually begin to acknowledge that another guy is handsome after we turn 29, but we still don't want to look at him for no other reason than that.

Maybe involve guns or cars or something the guys can discuss?

I vaguely recall reading about service and flatware and finding that some items are solid (maybe not 100% pure) and others are "only" silver-plate. You'd probably have to search your particular items to determine which are which, or maybe there's an easy test that you can do at home.

Wow. That is a huge chunk of missing highway! Nobody drove into it, I pray.

We have to drive with faith that the road just beyond our headlights will continue, free of wash-outs, bridge fails, and upthrusts.

Decades ago, heading to OKC on the toll road on a very hot Summer's day, we saw, in the right lane, a chunk of highway upthrust that looked particularly deadly - at least a foot raised. It wasn't upthrust in the direction where a car would launch off like a ski ramp; it was up in the way one might drive into it and rip out your undercarriage, or worse. (Don't know if I described that very well.) We were just fortunate to have been in the left lane.

Back before cell phones - no way to call it in.

To me, diced potatoes fried in a skillet, sometimes with an onion mixed in, are 'home frIes'.

And I don't know what to call those frozen things that are kinda like a tater tot, but generally shaped into a flat rectangle.

A thing that seems to be happening is turning old churches into houses or in some places-restaurants. One of the little rural churches I served was bought by the carpenter who lived next door. He was part of a storefront church in a larger town, and they made it into their new sanctuary. That made me happy-He was a very nice man and I'm glad when other Christians buy churches and use them.

Things like silver tea services, silver chafing dishes etc, many of which were wedding gifts 45 years ago are worth nothing. 345 Historically, silver has had a certain price ratio with gold. That ratio has been depressed for a couple of years, and if that ratio returns to historical norms, the price of silver would increase significantly.

Plus, these days, most silver is a 'byproduct' of copper production, and copper is depressed for a number of reasons. Silver isn't a bad asset to have some of right now.

348 One more thing about selling gold and silver. Look for a metals dealer, not someone who buys old jewelry for example. When I took stuff into this guy, he would show me the going price on the computer screen, weigh the stuff in front of me and explain if something didn't have the expected value and then write me a check on the spot.
He also would take pretty much anything metal and surprisingly things like old metal grill accessories and metal chairs are worth something besides getting paid to get rid of stuff.

In some small old towns in the South, at public buildings, you will see 2 smaller bathrooms set aside from bigger ones or 2 water fountains, one higher than the other in close proximity to each other.

In the olden days, those were the "whites only" and "coloreds only" set ups. Instead of remodeling, they were just left as is and spruced up with paint, etc. and the signs removed.

Best Christian radio station in my area. Spokane had a Moody Bible college campus in Spokane but it closed several years ago. They had an aviation program geared at missionaries. A young man from our church graduated in their last class. He's now working for New Tribes Ministries. Had two other young men from our small congregation graduate from Moody's. They are both plastering in some small town churches. Can't say enough about the work that Moody's does.

I kept reading how the Fleetwood Mac album, "Tusk" is some kind of genius masterwork. So, I've been giving it a listen, and-

yeah, I agree. It is pretty much a genius work due mostly to Lindsay Buckingham's production and guitar playing.

The funny thing is how dark the album is for a radio-friendly pop group. Some of sounds like it was recorded in a dungeon It's all about betrayal, things going wrong, anger with very little light. No wonder it failed, however-

perhaps it's got new relevance 43 years later as it sounds like the perfect soundtrack to Our New Biden Era of Unity.

Yeah, but it was easy for them, these early civil rights movement folks. They had a purpose, they were actually being oppressed, so they knew what they wanted... to no longer be oppressed!

Our modern minority protesters, they're at a substantial disadvantage, in that they can't define how they're being oppressed, they can't explain to themselves what solutions they are seeking, with any kind of coherence, and nobody who isn't them really takes them seriously. That's gotta be tough on these poor dears.

That's my theory in the interactive television shows.

First they let you decide what one of the characters in the show does, something benign. Eat a cake or eat a pie.

Then it's major, should he kiss the girl or break up?

Then it's....what should happen to this character? Live or die?

Then it's....what should happen to this Christian? Lions or chariots?

451 I vaguely recall reading about service and flatware and finding that some items are solid (maybe not 100% pure) and others are "only" silver-plate. You'd probably have to search your particular items to determine which are which, or maybe there's an easy test that you can do at home.
Posted by: Helena Handbasket at January 30, 2021 09:45 AM (TK8Ry)

Sterling is generally marked. American pieces will have the word "STERLING" and British pieces will have four hall marks. The first one will be a left facing rampant lion if it is sterling. Rampant means one paw is up, as if about to strike.

For flatware, the pieces with bulbous handles, usually knives or serving pieces, are often a light silver foil around a stainless steel core, the silver being too soft for the blade. Ignore them when counting pieces for value. Also, some stuff is weighted, like candle sticks, which need to be heavy so as not to tip over. It's made of sterling, but also has a non silver weight attached to the bottom.

Are you only talking about that particular company? Because I have a system that's probably as standard as any, and I had those same thoughts.

The thing serves those two basic purposes: alerts me when I'm there that something ain't right, and then is connected to the system. Which doesn't bother me at all. I had a couple "false alarms" early on, because I wasn't sure how sensitive it was, and the cops came a couple times, but no big deal. Now if I open the garage door without disarming... it'll scream at me if I'm not fast enough, but otherwise, it's fine.

The stuff my mom left us is solid sterling. I have the pattern and provenance, everything has hallmarks on it. She knew what she was buying. In addition to at least 24 full place settings, we have candelabras, serving pieces, bowls, game covers, and a large serving spoon that had some royals favorite race horse stamped on it. My wife defaults to stainless when we're entertaining, and it's been a burr in my saddle for years.

I'm not sure the government is really any different from anywhere else in that regard. The only added piece to the equation is the subtraction from the equation, in that govie types don't really answer to anybody else. Like customers. Or shareholders. So the elaborate system is kept in place by insanely precise policies and procedures. For the rank and file, they often don't have to think much further than making sure they use those policies and procedures to keep the bosses off their backs, and somewhere way way down in the thought process, is whatever they consider their own agenda. Which is rarely much more than getting their paycheck.
